Dear Readers,
So much to do, so little time! The fanatical frenzy of the upcoming holidays looms
before us, mocking us with holiday music and displays put up all too early in the malls
and shops. To add insult to injury, we aren't even officially out of Hurricane Season yet.
With that being said, it is still my favorite time of the year!
Every year since moving to South Florida, I look forward to that first evening somewhere
around Halloween when the first hint of Autumn rolls in from the north; the breeze kicks up, the
humidity drops, the temperature dips below 75 degrees, and you feel like the air is reaching
down to a place in your lungs that air never reached before! From what I recall, it is akin to
what northerners feel at the first hint of Spring…relief within reach. The great outdoors gradually
becomes a lot more user-friendly to us and we begin to look for things to do outside again;
concerts, shows, fairs, festivals, sports, activities and events of all kind bombard our area and
we head out to them in a mass exodus from our stale, air-conditioned homes!
It is during this time that the Sports & Activities Directory peaks in value to our readers. We jam
pack the Events Section with family friendly events to attend and provide detailed information on
how to get involved in the countless sports and activities in your home town. We have something
in our directory that will appeal to every age and interest. Registration and/or instruction to a new
sport, afterschool program or Winter Camp is a GREAT holiday gift, too! 'Tis the season for
professional sports, theater performances and music concerts. How about tickets
to a Dolphins or Panthers game, a concert or Broadway
Musical? Get inspired as you read through this issue and
think “Out of the Box” and into Box Seats, a Batter's Box, a
Tee Box or Penalty Box.
Enjoy this time of the year, even the holiday frenzy,
and remember to get outside and breathe deeply the first

Life Stadium. 9:00am - 3:00pm Daily. Boys and Girls, ages 5-12, may
participate in an interactive, week long flag football experience featuring
appearances by current and former Miami Dolphins players and coaches.
The camp focuses on football training, teamwork, physical fitness, positive
choices, and the importance of education while instilling the skills to
succeed both on and off the field.

THE 2011 THANKSGIVING HARVEST DRIVE IS IN
ACTION: The Harvest Drive is a yearlong project that
culminates in an event that takes place at several public schools
every Thanksgiving. Fundraising efforts and collections are
under way now. Students form over 80 public and private
schools, churches and temples are holding drives and will supply
the Harvest Drive with the non-perishable food that will be
distributed to families. Community businesses, corporations,
Parent-Teacher Associations, volunteer organizations, and
individual donors have generously sponsored the Harvest Drive
by providing money to purchase all perishable foods. High
School clubs collect large quantities of food obtained at
neighborhood grocery stores during Harvest Drive throughout
the county. All organizers of the Harvest Drive are volunteer
“Worker Bees” and 100% of all donations are given to the
recipient families. Harvest Drive is a 501(c)3.
Preparation for the actual distribution day takes place at each
host school. This is an effort that entails the participation and
coordination of many students, school personnel and other
community volunteers. All items collected for distribution are
dropped off at the respective sites. Volunteers sort, inventory
and label all donations. The non-perishable food items are
packed in no less that ten overflowing grocery bags per family.
Families are refereed by different social service agencies, as
well as by the Broward County school social workers, based
on their financial need. These families receive a week's
worth of groceries, a full Thanksgiving dinner with all the
trimmings, and are able to shop in the Harvest Drive's
makeshift store for toys, clothing, baby items, and other
household items that have been donated.
The Harvest Drive has been going on for the past eighteen years
and has expanded to include all of Broward County as we have
distribution sites in the north, south, and central parts of the county.
This year will be our biggest drive to date. We have the goal
of providing food to support over 1,500 families with
Thanksgiving dinner plus a week's worth of groceries. To help
meet the needs of those who depend on the food drive, we seek
the support of businesses, corporations, and community members
to assist us in continuing our mission and achieving our goal.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE 2011 NEED LIST: Nonperishable items needed (Average for a family of 5): 4 bottles
juice, 10 cans vegetables, 6 cans sweet potatoes, 4 cans/jars gravy,
4 cans cranberries, 6 cans fruit, 6 cans soup, 2 boxes pancake
mix, 1 bottle syrup, 3 boxes cereal/oatmeal, 4 lbs. pasta/rice, 3
jars spaghetti sauce, 4 boxes cookies, 2 jars peanut butter, 2 jars
jelly, 4 boxes stuffing, 2 packages napkins, 2 rolls aluminum
foil, 2 bottles shampoo, 2 dish soap, 1 large laundry detergent,
3 cans tuna or meat, 1 large toothpaste, 2 bars soap.
Perishable Items needed (Average for a family of 5): 2 turkeys
(10-12 lbs.), 2 dozen xl eggs, 2 pies, _ gallon OJ concentrate, 1
lb. margarine/butter, 2 Parmalat Milk, 2 loaves bread, 2 packages
rolls, 5 lb. bag of apples/oranges, 1 package american cheese, 1
bag potatoes, 3 healthy snacks.
OTHER NEEDS: Drive trucks to pick up collected food all
over Broward County on specified days. Organize food drives at
their place of business, gym, salon, or any other populated place.
Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different
distribution sites. Solicit monetary or in-kind donations such as
new clothing, new toys, new shoes, and new books, diapers and
other baby items. Help with printing of materials. Help with
promotion, advertising, and community exposure of the event.

lexa Ramer of Weston was only 14 years old when her
mother, Stacey Ramer, was diagnosed with cancer in the summer
of 2009. After helping her mother survive four rounds of
chemotherapy and several surgeries, she wanted to reach out to
other women who were suffering. “I am grateful that my mother
could afford the treatments and other things necessary to help
her get well,” said Alexa. “It breaks my heart that there are
other women who cannot.” In April 2011, Alexa joined forces
with her friend Freddi Newman, whose mother Carolyn is also
a survivor. Together they started the Junior Pink Angels, which
offers young people the opportunity to enhance the lives of
others and provides women living with breast cancer financial
support to lead a healthy life regardless of their ability to pay.
The Junior Pink Angels (for kids) is a sub-committee of the
Pink Angels (for adults), which works in collaboration with
Breast Services at the Memorial Cancer Institute. While
medicine helps in the fight against cancer, one of the hardest
parts of treatment and recovery for patients can be the effects
on appearance and self-esteem. The staff at Memorial works
closely with patients to promote wellness and help them restore
their dignity by providing tips on scalp care after hair loss, beauty
and skin care tools and techniques, camouflage makeup,
nutrition information and much more. Women are treated
equally, regardless of their ability to pay, allowing them one less
burden as they heal. The Pink Angels helps provide financial
support for some of these women, as well as education and
awareness on the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle, from
diagnosis to recovery. “Memorial helped me feel whole again,”
said Stacey Ramer. “They took such great care of me.”
The Junior Pink Angels is for kids, ages 8 to 18. More than
50 people attended the first Junior Pink Angels meeting which
was held at a Weston home. Most of the members have mothers,
aunts, grandmothers or friends who have been touched by the
disease, while others are just looking for a way to give back.
The organization offers them a way to establish camaraderie as
they raise money for the Memorial Foundation and reach out to
others. At the executive level, members can get involved in
five committees including membership, religious, sponsorship,
school and social media. The Junior Pink Angels are also hoping
to start clubs at middle and high schools throughout Broward
County. Alexa launched the first club at Cypress Bay High
School and many others are in the planning stages. Students
can earn service hours for their participation.
Carolyn Newman of Plantation serves on the executive
committee of the Pink Angels and is thrilled that her daughter
is one of the founders of the junior organization. After Carolyn
was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in May 2006, she had
a radical bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction,
chemotherapy and radiation. “Breast cancer is a sisterhood club
that you never want to join, but once you are in the club you are
glad to be a member,” said Carolyn. “Surviving made me feel
like a warrior. It was a reawakening and offered me a chance to
do better, to give back, and to pay it forward to help other women.
Freddi took good care of me when I was going through
chemotherapy. I am so proud of her efforts to help other women.”

he aquatics program at the Sheinberg Family YMCA of
Weston continues to grow, as members recognize the many benefits
of training and exercising in the water. Swimming is one of the
best exercises for the heart and lungs. It can also help lessen
joint stiffness and increase stamina. The YMCA offers water polo
and swim teams, as well as a variety of swim and fitness classes for
ages 6 months to adult.
The YMCA's water polo team competes locally in various games
and tournaments in one of the fastest growing sports in South Florida.
Water polo combines elements of all-star wrestling, championship
basketball and world-class swimming - all in six feet of water. It is a
fast-paced, physical game that requires skill, speed, strength, and
endurance. Coaches Andrew and David Muller, father and son, are
both seasoned professionals. Andrew represented his native country
on the Hungarian National Team for water polo and David played
on his water polo team in college. The team is open to anyone ages
10 and older, as long as they know how to swim. The coaches work
with the players to teach them the mechanics of the game and help
them develop the necessary skills to master the sport.
The YMCA's swim teams offer members another way to compete
in the pool. Swimming is more of an individual sport than water
polo and does not involve any contact. Members can join competitive
programs that range from ages 6 to adult. “There is a tremendous
amount of camaraderie on the teams,” said Scott Hendry, Senior
Aquatic Director. “Kids from beginner to advanced cheer for one
another and have a lot of fun together.”
Kids in the swim program work with head coach John Spire,
former Division 1 collegiate swimmer. The YMCA offers a variety
of teams, depending on the swimmer's age, level and goals. The
can start with the Pre-bronze team (ages 6 to 14), which introduces
kids to swimming and conditioning and helps them gain confidence
as they learn basic training skills. They can work their way up to
the Senior team (ages 12 and up), which is for kids who are highly
committed to competitive training and interested in achieving
Junior Olympic and Sectional times. Ultimately, they can join the
National team (ages 15 and up), for kids who are committed to
swimming on national and international levels.
The YMCA also offers a variety of non-competitive swim
programs. The Porpoise club, for ages 10 and up, is for members and
non-members who want to become proficient swimmers, but do not
want to compete. They learn stroke development, water polo,
synchronized swimming, CPR and First Aid certifications and more.
The YMCA also offers group and individual lessons where kids can
learn water safety, swimming skills and drowning prevention.
Children can enroll in programs as young as 6 months old. “We offer
a multitude of programs so we can teach as many kids as possible to
swim so they will be safe in and around the water,” said Hendry.
There are also teams and classes for adults. The Masters Swim
team provides adults with a way to enhance their health, fitness
levels and overall well-being. Many use the team as way to practice
for the swimming portion of triathlons. The adults work with Head
Coach Beverly Clarke, who has completed over 300 triathlons.
There are also a variety of water fitness classes.

Kids Enjoy Camp Sagemont
During Holiday Breaks

amp Sagemont continues the fun of summer camp throughout the year by
hosting Holiday Break Camps. The programming is similar to summer camp but the
sessions are held during Winter Break, Spring Break and selected Teacher Work
Days. Camp Sagemont is special because it is a neighborhood camp with many of
the amenities of a much larger program.
During the holiday sessions, campers enjoy a wide variety of activities and day
trips. Trips can include bowling, a day at the movies, Butterfly World, Flamingo
Gardens and Monkey Joe's. Camp Sagemont is known for its themed days that
create a party atmosphere with bounce houses, sno-cones, face painting and special
events. Holiday camp is for children from three years old through 5th grade. Many
camp days include swimming in the beautiful pool located on the Sagemont Lower
School Campus in Town Center. The Swim Academy is housed on site and supervises
swim activities. Camp Sagemont has its own dedicated buses and bus drivers. The
buses are air-conditioned and are equipped with seat belts. One price includes all

ince 1996, the Weston Warriors Youth Football League
has been offering its participants more than just the
opportunity to play competitive football and cheer. The kids
learn important life lessons about what it takes to be successful
both on and off the field. It is run by a group of volunteers
who are so committed to the organization that many even stay
on after their kids have left the program.
The Weston Warriors has seven age/weight divisions for
football and seven for cheerleading. On the football side alone,
there are 250 players and 40 coaches who compete against teams
from 12 other cities in the American Youth Football League.
The Warriors begin practicing in May in shorts and t-shirts.
After a month off in June, the players wear full gear as they
prepare for the first game in mid-August. They work closely
with trainers who develop individualized weight, nutrition and
agility programs to strengthen each player's weaknesses.
The team's home field is at Tequesta Trace Park and volunteers
work hard to make home games special for the players. Saturday
games begin with the Peewees, the youngest division, and
continue throughout the day by age group until the Unlimited
division plays. It is a wholesome, family atmosphere, with
parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and friends cheering for
the teams. When a team member makes a good play, his name
and number is announced over the loud speaker. There are
volunteers cooking and selling food at the concession stand,
team moms make sure things are running smoothly and team
dads keeping the players hydrated.
The Weston Warriors' efforts have been paying off. The
120's have won the Super Bowl for the past two years and
were National Champions last year. Many of the Weston
Warriors have played for high school, college and professional
football teams after leaving the program. The team has been
a feeder program for St. Thomas Aquinas High School, which
has one of the best high school football programs in the country.
Many of St. Thomas' former Warriors are currently playing for
colleges and universities, including Miami Hurricane's Brandon
Liner, Iowa Hawkeyes' Jake Rudock and Harvard Crimson's
Reynaldo Kirton.
Troy Millican, vice president and head coach of the 100 pound
team, has been involved in the program for 14 years, four of
them without kids of his own a team. His son Cole, now 20,
started as a Warrior when he was six-years-old. Cole played
football and lacrosse for St. Thomas and now plays lacrosse for
Stony Brook University. Canyon, 10, is currently in the program.
Millican is quick to tell the players that NFL stands for “not for
long,” which is why the team emphasizes education and family
before football. “The Warriors is about more than just football,”
said Millican. “We teach the kids skills that will help them
throughout their lives. It is not 'pay to play' league, so the kids
have to work hard to earn a spot on the team, and they do.”
Qunicy Faison, treasurer and head coach of the Peewees, was a
football player and wrestler at Bucknell University and wants kids
in his community to be able to experience the thrill of playing
sports. He coached for two years before his son Jordan, 7, was old
enough to join the program last year as a Pee Wee. His other son
Dylan, 4, is on the field every day. Next year, he will play on the
Developmental team, a new program which gives young first-time
players exposure to the game. “We teach all of the kids the
importance of working hard to reach both their personal and team
goals,” said Faison. He is hoping to bring more Weston kids back
into the program. “We have so many great athletes in Weston
who are choosing to play for other teams when they have a great
program in their own hometown,” said Faison.

hen Joshua Grossman's friends started planning for their Bar
Mitzvahs, a Jewish coming of age ritual, he began thinking about his own.
He knew that he wanted something non-traditional and very spiritual. His
family was planning a summer trip to Africa, so he decided to research
synagogues to see if it was possible to have it there. Once he discovered the
Abayudaya, he was ready to begin studying for his Bar Mitzvah.
The Abayudaya or "people of Judah" is a small community of Ugandan
Jews who live in the hills outside Mbale. They started practicing Judaism in
1919, but had to stop in 1971 when Idi Amin Dada banned Jewish practice,
forcing many to convert to other religions. After the fall of Amin in 1979,
Rabbi Gershom Sizomu gathered what was left of the Abayudaya community
and began to begin rebuild. Today, they are a growing community of over
1,000 Jews living among their 10,000 Christian and Muslim neighbors in
scattered villages in the hills of Eastern Uganda. “I found it amazing that
they were able to hold onto their faith, even when it was outlawed,” said
Joshua. Vivian and Glenn Grossman contacted Rabbi Sizomu and set a date.
The Grossman's had an opportunity to get to know the Rabbi before
they left for Africa. Two months before Joshua's Bar Mitzvah, the Rabbi
visited South Florida for a week to fundraise and increase awareness of
the Abayudaya. The Grossman's invited him to stay at their Weston
home. “From the moment we met each other it was like we were old
friends,” said Vivian. “Josh spent time with the Rabbi and got very
excited for his Bar Mitzvah.”
They left for Africa in mid-June for a four-week journey filled with unique
experiences they will never forget. Glenn climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and ran
in the Kilimanjaro Marathon. The family went on safari, encountered baboons
at their doorstep, witnessed the beauty of the Indian Ocean, saw goats and
chickens wandering in the streets, and met people from all over the world.
They visited places where running water and power are luxuries and
unemployment is as high as eighty percent. “We saw so many incredible
things, but it was the people that impressed me most,” said Vivian. “They
have so little and are so happy. We have so much and so few are happy.
Maybe we have it all wrong.”
When the Grossman's arrived in Mbale, they invited the entire village
for lunch to help them celebrate. The day before the Bar Mitzvah, Vivian
visited the market to shop for enough food to feed the 400 Jewish, Muslim
and Christian guests planning to attend from neighboring villages. She
purchased two large sacks of rice and then joined a group of 20 people who
spent six hours sorting through it to remove the stones to make it suitable
for cooking. Two goats and several chickens were slaughtered for the meal.
The day of Joshua's Bar Miztvah arrived on July 7. Rabbi Sizomu
performed the service and Joshua read from the Torah. The Grossmans
gave speeches, which were translated into the native language so
everyone could understand. The children in the village wrote notes for
him, gave him candy and sang songs. After the service, the tents and
chairs were removed and the celebration began. The DJ arrived with his
laptop and speakers, and the guests ate and danced for hours. “It was
so spiritual and moving,” said Joshua. “I could not have picked a better
place to have my Bar Mitzvah.”
For Joshua's mitzvah project, or “good deed”, he decided to help the
Tobin Health Center in Mbale. The 4,000-square-foot facility serves anyone

obert Mackey graduated from the University of Florida in 1977 with a
Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. Prior to opening Mackey Sports
Enterprises, he was an athletic director in two other Florida cities. In 2001,
Robert Mackey returned to Pembroke Pines with a vision after a three year
hiatus in Hawaii. His goal was to create a sports program to improve the
quality of life for individuals and combat the epidemic of obesity. After eight
years of having a joint contract with CB Smith Park, he was awarded the
privatization of the tennis facility and Mackey Sports Enterprises was born.
Mackey's vision was becoming a reality as his opportunity to provide training
in various sports was coming closer. His background involves a lifetime devotion
to an array of sports. For every participant at CB Smith Park, he insists on the
completion of three goals: Fitness, Social Experience, and Improvement in the
sport of choice. His goals are necessary due to the lack of physical education
classes offered in local schools, and his program is designed to fill that void. He
sees that children in this generation are becoming more sedentary. What used
to be going outdoors and being active has become sitting at home for hours
playing video games. "Nothing makes me happier than seeing the results that
the program can provide. Watching people enter the facility, participating in
their activities and walking out with the euphoria you get after a great workout
is something I see on a daily basis," said Robert Mackey. In the beginning,
Mackey Sports Enterprises was only offering tennis. Since then, soccer,
basketball, and volleyball have been added to the program. This year softball
and football will make their debuts. The tennis program features high level
training with two academies: the Adams Academy and Kozlov Academy. Stefan
Kozlov is one of the highest prospects in the international tennis scene.
Mackey Sports offers Basketball, Tennis or Soccer programs which are
designed to raise the participant's level of ability and fitness to allow them to
participate in local leagues at a comfortable level. All ages and all levels are
welcome. They also offer Winter, Summer & Spring Break Camps along with a

ooth whitening or bleaching is a very common
procedure in dentistry to lighten teeth that have
darken over time. As a person ages teeth become
stained by foods, liquids, medication, tobacco and
the aging process. Professional tooth bleaching can
help to make teeth look brighter and white again.
There are two main professional methods to make
teeth look lighter: at-home whitening gel or in-office
light power whitening. At home whitening involves
the construction of custom made plastic trays that fit
your mouth. Whitening gel is applied to these trays
and placed in the mouth for a period of two hours
every day for two to three weeks. In-office whitening
involves placing a protective barrier over the soft
tissue, placing the gel over the teeth and applying a
light to activate the gel for one hour.
The American Dental Association recommends to
have a dental check up before undergoing this
procedure. Whitening is not recommended if teeth
have decay or periodontal disease. Teeth that have
tetracycline stain will respond slowly to the
procedure and may require multi month
treatments. Also, whitening treatment will not work
on fillings or crowns.
The effects of whitening can last from several
months to several years, but may vary depending
on the lifestyle of the patient. Factors that decrease
whitening include smoking and the ingestion of dark
colored liquids like coffee, tea, and red wine.

Reshaping Work?
I
n the early days of contact lenses, doctors noticed that their patients
wearing hard contact lenses would report seeing better at a distance after
removing the lenses than they did before they had put them in. Doctors also
noticed that the prescription of some patients in these hard lenses was changing
slower than people in glasses. They had discovered the reason for this was that
the lenses that had these effects fit flatter on the curvature of the eye than a
regular contact lens, creating a gentle “pushing” effect which temporarily reduced
the amount of nearsightedness for the wearers.
Doctors went on prescribing these “flatter” lenses for many years until a
company produced a special design and healthier contact lens material for
approval by the FDA. The FDA approved Orthok in 2002 for patients of all ages.
The procedure involves the patient putting an Orthok lens in their eye before
bed. When the eyes are closed they don't feel the lenses, and upon awakening
when they remove the lens they see perfectly clear all day until bedtime, when
they need to re-insert the lens.

n 1996, The Sagemont School in Weston opened serving
23 preschool through 5th grade students. When the building
was not ready on time, classes were held in meeting rooms at
the Bonaventure Hotel, currently known as The Hyatt. The
students studied there for two months until they were able to
officially move into the building. Flash forward to 2011. Now,
the school has 800 students on two beautiful campuses and is a
well-established college preparatory school.
Richard and Renee Goldman, their son Brent, and a group of
investors founded the Sagemont School. Their goal was to create
a quality private school in Weston. “When we opened in 1996,
there were only 3 public schools and they were all overcrowded,
says Dr. Brent Goldman, President, The Sagemont School.
“Weston seemed like a growing, family community so we thought
it might be an ideal place for a private school. We wanted to
provide parents with a choice.”
The Lower School campus was designed for children in PK5. Soon there was a demand for a middle and high school. In
2000, Sagemont opened its Upper School campus just five miles
away from the elementary school. The Goldman's vision has
not changed since they first opened their doors. The goal was to
create a college prep school with a focus on strong academics,
extra curricular activities and community service. Sagemont
graduates have gone on to attend such prestigious colleges such
as Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, New York University,
Cornell, Georgetown and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
The Lower School campus, located near Weston Town Center,
still serves students in Preschool to fifth grade. The school
challenges its students with a rigorous curriculum and offers many
extracurricular activities including band, chorus, sports, drama,
National Elementary Honor Society, Junior Achievement,
Odyssey of the Mind, and much more. In addition, the students
participate in a wide variety of community service activities.
The Upper School campus, located on Glades Circle, is a
beautiful 2-story building with an NBA style gymnasium.
Sagemont has created relationships with different Weston facilities
to enhance its golf, track and field, swimming and soccer programs.
The school offers more than 19 varsity, junior varsity and middle
school sports teams as well as an intramural sports program.
Not only has Sagemont made a name for itself academically,
the Lions have been very successful in sports and the arts, as
well. This past year, the Lions won two state championships.
The boy's basketball team and boy's tennis team took home the
class 2A trophy. The Lady Lions basketball team, made up of
mostly freshman, also made it to the State championship.
The high school thespian team was invited to present its
production of Dracula at the 2011 Florida State Thespian Festival.
They earned many Superior ratings and Christopher Merlino was
awarded one of ten thespian scholarships presented at the festival.
The drama department won five Cappies awards, including Best
Lead Actor to Dean Malahias and Best Play for Dracula.
Both campuses utilize technology to enhance the educational
experience. Dr. Goldman states, “Our philosophy has always
been to integrate technology into the curriculum in meaningful
ways. We want to make sure our infrastructure can meet the
needs of the different technologies.” Lower School students are
enjoying the use of Mimio boards for interactive learning, as
well as a mobile laptop laboratory. The new fifth grade laptop
program ensures that the students are prepared for the transition
to middle and high school.
Once the students are at the Upper School, they become part
of a wireless laptop community so that they will be prepared for
the real world. Aerospace engineer, Santiago Lattanzio was a
Sagemont graduate in 2007. He says, “The Sagemont School
brings two very important aspects of today's world into the
classroom: knowledge and technology. I was always intrigued
by how every student was encouraged to bring a laptop to school,
and how most of the assignments and class materials were often
reviewed and studied via computer. This integration of
technology and studying not only prepared me for what might
come, but it spiked my interest in technology.”
Although Sagemont has only been around for 15 years,
it has clearly established itself as a top college prep school
in south Florida.

magine Charter School at Weston is the only charter school located in Weston.
The school educates more than 900 students in grades Pre-K through fifth grade,
and has just completed its tenth successful year, maintaining its “A” rating since
inception. The school not only educates those students who reside in Weston, but
many of the students travel from Sunrise, Davie, Plantation, Tamarac, and even as
far north as Coral Springs.
Being a charter school, and a “school of choice”, Imagine at Weston prides
itself on its strong academic focus, preparing students to become lifelong learners.
In addition, the school has a very strong Character Education program that is infused
throughout all parts of the curriculum. The school is also well-known for its biliterate program, where students are immersed in both English and Spanish. This
program is available in all grades and at the end of this school year, our fifth grade
students will move on to middle school having the ability to read, write and speak
both English and Spanish fluently.
As with all of the schools in Broward County, as well as the state of Florida,
Imagine at Weston has had to make significant changes due to budget cuts. However,
we continue to have specials for our students such as media, art and music, and the
school provides many afterschool enrichments to enhance our students in areas
above and beyond the curriculum.

Creating Traditions

hen this time of year comes
around most people find themselves
crazy busy with the hustle and bustle
of the season. It starts near Halloween
with the rush to find costumes and
decorations. It continues with the
change over to a harvest look, then the
Hanukkah and Christmas decorations and all the planning that goes into family meals,
get togethers and travel, holiday parties and entertaining and the rush to find the
perfect gifts. After the baking, cooking, decorating, set up and clean up and the race
through the malls I often stop and wonder…“wait, was this supposed to be fun?”
The holidays can end up being a stressful time for parents. Aside from all the
family commitments there are lots of demands that come with being a parent.
Costumes, school shows, items needing to be sent in for class and being in and out of
stores in the quest to find the right gifts can be overwhelming. All this stress can wear
on us which often translates into stress passed on to our children. In a time that
should be joyous, tempers are flaring, patience is short and arguments are more
frequent. Our children, unfortunately, are the ones who bear the brunt of our overload.
How can we make the holidays more about what they're supposed to be
about? The best way to answer this question is to stop the craziness before it even
gets started. Before getting caught “in the hoopla” of the holidays take a minute
to step back and reflect on why the holidays are important to you and what you
want your children to take from them.
Last year I got caught in the holiday hoopla and had to refocus. The moment
came when I caught myself yelling at everyone in the family for not helping to hang
the Hanukkah decorations. At the time the kids were interested in hanging about 2
things when they lost interest. There I stood, angry because I'd raced to spend
money on all sorts of new, fun decorations and no one seemed interested in what I
had planned. My “step back moment” came on the first night of Hanukkah when
my son asked why I hadn't gotten out the menorah he made when he was 2.
At that moment I realized in trying to “create a holiday moment” that it had
already been created… a tradition. The years before that, my focus had been on
taking out items the kids had made in years past and putting them out around the
house to decorate. I hadn't realized that this had become their “tradition” and what
had become important to them.
I decided to ask them what they liked most about the holiday. Aside from the gifts of
course, they said when their cousins come over and they played their game of football
outside. The football game happened every year and became more involved and developed
each year as they went from age 2 to age 12. No planning I did went into that or created
that. They said the night of Thanksgiving when we went for dessert at midnight when the
Sawgrass mall opened. They didn't remember what I bought that night but they
remembered sitting in the café with me laughing and having dessert. No planning went
into that either, it had been a spur of the moment decision to go. Without even trying,
these had become the traditions. These were the moments they held and would cherish.
As the holiday season approaches, stop and take a moment to think about your
traditions, then let it go and let your children help to create them.

Leap Frog - Teach your child early technology skills with Leap Frog's variety
of educational, handheld gaming systems for kids. The Leapster Explorer has
more than 40 games and activities that cover subjects from world geography to
science to everyday math to reading fluency. The Leapster2 teaches letters,
numbers, memory skills and more.
Mastermind - Mastermind is a two-person game between a code-maker
and a code-breaker. In 10 moves or fewer, the code-breaker must crack his or
her opponent's code. Mastermind has long been known as an excellent game for
fostering strategy and problem-solving skills.
4-Way Countdown - This game is a fun way for up to four players to
practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills with dice. Cadaco,

game for up-and-coming and experienced spellers alike.
Another great way to find educational games for your child: ask his or her teacher.
Teachers may subscribe to educational publications that regularly review learning games,
or they may even use games in their classroom that support their instruction. If you have
a specific learning goal in mind, your child's teacher may be an excellent source of ideas.

WESTERN HIGH SCHOOL
ALWAYS REMEMBERS, NEVER FORGETS
S
Ince September 12, 2001, the engineering class at Western High School
began working on a monument to remember the terrorist attack and the victims
of 9/11. It took many months and a lot of hard work, but what stands now on
the campus of Western High School serves to “always remember” those lost and
“never forget” what happened on American soil.
The monument that the engineering class designed and constructed consists of
two cement towers symbolic of the World Trade Center towers, surrounded by a
pentagonal cement wall remembering the attack on the pentagon, a flag pole in the
center of the monument of which the base holds an engraving of the state of
Pennsylvania where the third attack culminated in a plane crash. The flag itself was
once flown over enemy soil and was sent back to Western High by a Western High
School graduate who currently serves in the United States military. The fill on the
ground is broken stones resembling the mounds of rubble that remained after the
towers collapsed at ground zero. At night, the monuments are lit by spotlights and
shine high into the sky. It is truly one of a kind.

Each year on the school day closest to September 11th, Western High
School assembles outside at the monument, along with firefighters from
many different cities, police and local elected officials to honor the memory
of those fallen in the terrorist attacks. This year is the 10th anniversary
of 9/11 and Western High School was honored to have two retired New
York City Firefighters who worked the aftermath of the attacks, speak to
the crowd. In addition, a flag folding ceremony was conducted, as it is
every year at this tribute, that is then sent to a specific firehouse in New
York City with a plaque to let them know Western High School has not
forgotten their brothers that were lost. This year, the flag was sent to the
New York Fire Department Headquarters.

September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will
remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the

you're in luck. There are many educational
games that teach children valuable skills,
challenge them to think and problem-solve,
and fuel their curiosity. For parents seeking
educational games that reinforce concepts taught
at school, promote other important abilities and
are a lot of fun for children, here are a few suggestions:
Apples to Apples Junior - The junior version of Apples to Apples teaches
players to choose the best noun card in their hand of cards to accompany the
judge's "green apple card," which has a one-word characteristic (such as "smelly").
Players must then convince the judge that their chosen word is the best match.
This silly game expands children's vocabulary and comparative skills and also
encourages creativity and teaches young learners the art of persuasion.
Master the Grade - Kaplan Toys, a longtime manufacturer of educational toys and
products for children, has Master the Grade game series for kindergarten through fifth
grade. The games were designed by teachers to reinforce classroom curricula in math,
science, language arts and social studies, and also cover art, music and classic literature.
Connect Four - This fast-paced, classic game is played similar to tic-tac-toe but in a four-in-a-row format - and is great for strengthening children's abstract
visual skills and teaching them to think critically and think ahead.
10 Days in the USA - This game has players plan a 10-day itinerary across
the United States that adheres to a set of "movement rules." It is an excellent

Although lacrosse has been popular in New England for decades, most Broward

County public high schools have been more focused on varsity sports like football,
basketball and baseball. Many are expecting that to change this year, after a new
ruling added lacrosse to the list of varsity sports. Lacrosse players at Cypress Bay
High School and Western High School have already started conditioning and getting
in shape for team tryouts in January.
For the past few years, many private schools in Broward County have been
playing lacrosse in accordance with the Florida High School Athletic Association
(FHSAA). In the public schools, however, it has been offered as a “pay to play” club
sport, not under state guidelines. Seven Broward County public schools (Cypress
Bay, Western, Cooper City, Douglas, South Plantation, Taravella and West Broward)
have had club teams.
In the spring, everything changed when FHSAA Executive Director Roger
Dearing sent a letter to all FSHAA member schools which stated, “We have become
aware that a number of member schools are sponsoring teams, in this case lacrosse,
and labeling it as a 'club team', which makes the school non-compliant with the
FHSAA policies. Schools may only sponsor a club team in sports that are NOT
recognized or sanctioned by the FHSAA. Lacrosse is a recognized sport in our
Association, and therefore must be conducted in accordance with all of the
Association's Bylaws, Policies and Administrative Procedures.” This left the Broward
County School District with two options: offer lacrosse as a varsity sport or not at
all. Parents, players and coaches made phone calls, wrote letters and attended
meetings to show their support for the sport.
A committee of high school principals and athletic directors met to develop a
recommended course of action. “In these dire economic times, the school system
does not have the money to support lacrosse,” said Damian Huttenhoff, Director of
Athletics and Student Activities for Broward County Schools. “The public made it
clear that they would help fund the sport through booster clubs.” In June, the
Broward County School Board announced that lacrosse would be considered a varsity
sport and treated like golf and volleyball. Schools would have the option of offering
the sport based on student interest, but would have to fund the sport through their
existing athletic budget and from lacrosse booster clubs. In addition, to ensure
gender equity, schools would be required to offer a girls' team if they offered a
boys' team.
Club players in Broward County will have to adapt to a new set of rules. Private
and public schools may have to play each other if they are in the same district.
Players may have an opportunity to play home games on their school fields and
might have access to bus transportation for away games. Public schools are also
more likely to attract strong lacrosse players who may have previously opted to
attend private schools for their varsity teams.
Cypress Bay has had strong lacrosse teams in the past and will continue to offer
the sport. The boys' team won the District Championship in 2009/10, but lost in the
first round of District playoffs last year. Although the school lost three senior All
District players this year, as well as its starting goalie, it may have four returning All
District players - Nick Ardion, David Eisler, Tyler Mutschler and Daniel Orlan. The
Cypress Bay girls' team has played in the district championships four years in a row.
Last year, the team finally earned the title of District Champions, after defeating
Western. It finished 28th out of 121 club teams in the state of Florida. The girls'
team could be even stronger this year if all seven starters return, including All
District players Liz Myers, Christina O'Neil, Sam Railey and Olivia Smith.
Western will also continue to offer lacrosse. Last year, the boys' lacrosse team
finished 6-7-1. The team made it to Districts, but lost to Cooper City High School.
Four of its players made All District, including Tyler Carmona, Sebastian Perez, Logan
Jankowski and Nick Foster. The team only lost three seniors and many of its core
players are expected to play again this year. They are determined to win the
championship. The school's girls' team won the District Championship in 2009/10,
but lost to Cypress last year. Four girls made the All District team, including Samantha
Ramos, Nicole Ramos, Nina Dimarzio and Jenna Tolzmann. Samantha Ramos was
also named the Best Goalie in South Florida and selected to be on the South Florida
National Team for the second year in a row.
