CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
Welcome to our second Milford Tennis and Squash Club Magazine. The Club
has had another very successful year, with membership held at around 620.
The magazine gives details of all the different activities at the Club, with contact
details if further information is required on any specific activity. With the interior
of the Club completed so successfully, in the last year we have concentrated
on improving the grounds with the extended Club patio, new patio furniture and
new pathway to Courts 4 to 7 making a huge difference to the appearance of
the Club. A lovely new patio area was also built next to the coaching court, so
that parents can watch their children in comfort. The area behind the Club was
cleared, paved and the concrete shed modified to make a shop/store room for
our Coach. We also installed acoustic panels on the Foster Taylor room ceiling
which was much appreciated by the bridge and mah-jong players.
As the Club has been here since 1927, it is surprising that lots of people in
Milford don’t know we exist. Another step was taken to overcome this when,
for the first time in the history of the Club, we took part in the Milford Carnival.
Despite the appalling weather it was a great success. We didn’t win a prize,
but a picture of the float and a mention appeared in the local paper. We plan to
participate again this year and hope for better weather.
Having finally received planning permission for lighting on tennis courts 4 and 7,
the most exciting project in the coming year will be the installation of the lighting
on those courts, the work being carried out at the same time as the re-carpeting
of the 2 courts, in September 2013.
Court 7 is the junior coaching court and the new lighting will significantly extend
the time available for coaching the juniors. We have over 100 junior members
who, of course, represent the future of our Club. We have extensive mini and
junior coaching programmes and many activities including regular junior/senior
tournaments where juniors have a chance to play with adults in a fun competition.
If you are new to Milford, or haven’t seen the Club, why not have a look at our
lovely facilities in Lucerne Road and have a chat with some members, always
the best ambassadors for a thriving Club like ours.
As always, my thanks go to the members of the Club who have produced this
magazine, and to the Club’s Committee members who give so generously of
their time and talents to make the Club such a success. I would also like to
thank the sponsors and advertisers whose funding has helped to make the
magazine possible.

HISTORY OF MILFORD TENNIS
The Milford Country Club was formed in 1927 and became a member of the
L.T.A. in 1935, purchasing the freehold of its 1.8 acre site in Lucerne road in
1945. Although tennis has always been the major sporting activity at the club, in
the early years croquet and hockey were also played. In 1936 the first squash
court was built on the site and in 1950 the Squash Club, previously a separate
club, merged with the Country Club. The club originally had three grass courts
and four hard courts and, during these early years, the members largely played
social tennis with a limited number of matches being arranged with other local
clubs. More recently, bridge, mah-jong and table tennis have also become
important activities enjoyed by club members.
In the late 1990’s, the Club changed its focus to include competitive tennis,
thus providing opportunities for members of all abilities to participate in internal
tournaments as well as in matches with neighbouring clubs. In 2001 the Club
changed its name to the Milford Tennis and Squash Club and subsequently
obtained the services of a full time professional coach. All the courts have been
resurfaced in recent years and the Club now possesses seven high quality
artificial grass courts which are much admired by visiting players. Floodlights
were installed on three of the courts in 2005 and two further courts will be flood
lit later in 2013.
In 2007/8, the Club carried out major improvements to the Clubhouse which
included providing new changing rooms, toilets and kitchen facilities as well
as refurbishing the whole of the premises. The full cost of this was £140,000,
all of which was met from Club funds. Unfortunately, on Boxing Day 2009, a
devastating fire destroyed approximately 50% of the Club premises sparing
only the new kitchen and squash courts. In a little over a year, the Clubhouse
was totally rebuilt using the money from the insurance claim, with an additional
£29,000 from Club funds being used to improve and upgrade the facilities. The
new Clubhouse was formally opened in February 2010 by Mark Cox, the former
Davis Cup tennis player, and today the Club is fortunate to have a large function
room, and lounge bar capable of hosting events for up to 60 people.

AND SQUASH CLUB
The management of the club is in the hands of the Executive Committee, which
consists of a President, Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and representatives
of each of the Club’s main sections. The Club is run entirely on a voluntary basis
and depends on the participation of a large number of the over 600 members.
Social events are organized throughout the year and both internal and open
tennis tournaments held regularly.
Milford has always been a popular venue for junior tennis players and has,
since 1938 hosted one of Hampshire’s largest Junior Tennis Tournaments, a
fact of which it is very proud. We are looking forward to our 75th Diamond
Anniversary tournament this year.
SQUASH & RACKETBALL
The Club has two recently refurbished,
heated, sprung floor, squash courts
with viewing balcony and adjoining
changing rooms. Squash members
have full use of all clubhouse facilities
and join in all Club events.
Two teams compete in winter and
summer Dorset Squash Leagues and
internal leagues and ladder ensure
that there is plenty of competitive
Squash available. Recently Racketball
has been introduced and is now so
popular that a separate internal league
has been formed.
In past years Squash members
have visited other Clubs, including
the Channel Islands to play friendly
fixtures and have then hosted
return matches.
The Club’s regular programme is:
Mondays Mixed Club Night
Tuesdays and Thursdays Team matches from 6pm - 9pm
7.30pm Onwards
All other times are available for members to book
Contact John Satchwell on 01425 628410
TABLE TENNIS
Our Table Tennis players meet
in the Clubroom at 7.00 pm on
Thursday evenings throughout the
year. Membership numbers have
been small but are now increasing.
Standards have improved over the
past couple of years to give some
very competitive games. Two tables
are available and the evening usually
finishes at 10.00 pm with a drink at
the bar. A few more players would be
welcome of all standards and abilities.
At present there are no junior players
but if any are interested, they would be
welcome to join in between 7 pm and
8 pm. If numbers can be increased it is
hoped to organise some coaching and
friendly matches.

BRIDGE
Rubber Bridge is popular and played at the Club throughout the year. The Bridge
players meet in our comfortable function room three times a week. Tuesdays
2 pm to 5 pm – Cut in. Wednesdays 10 am to noon – Beginners. Help is given
on an individual basis at no extra cost making it a unique opportunity to learn
to play this enjoyable and social game. Thursdays 2 pm to 5 pm – Partnership
bridge for the more expert player. Refreshments are available throughout all
sessions. Each year a Bridge lunch is held, see the Club calendar.

MAH-JONG
The number of Mah-jong players has increased rapidly in the last few years. For
those who have not played this Chinese puzzle game, it is a game of luck and
chance and lots of fun. You do not need any knowledge to play and it is easy
to learn and enjoy. The Mah-jong players meet on Monday afternoons at 1.45
pm and tea is taken in mid afternoon. In June 2012 a Mah-jong marathon fun
day was organised to raise funds for the Club and will hopefully be repeated in
2013. Also Spring and Autumn lunches take place to which all Club members
are invited. New members are always welcome.

LUCERNE ARTS
Our Artists group have been meeting every Tuesday evening from 7.00pm for
many years. In 2012 we went on a trip to Alexander Creswell’s Studio at Watts
Gallery, where he is the resident artist situated in Compton near Guildford. He
spent some time with us explaining how he manages to do large painting and
his methods painting interiors of Windsor Castle. Our trip for 2013 is going to
be to the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy. This is to be accompanied
with a meal in London before returning home. The group displays it’s pictures
in the Clubhouse.

SOCIAL
The Club organises social events for members throughout the year. Recent
events have included BBQ’s, a ‘Murder Mystery ‘ dinner with professional actors,
organised walks in the New Forest, a New Year’s Eve party and a Valentine’s
Dinner with a live quartet and a disco. For Red Nose Day, a Zumba session was
arranged on the Friday evening and a Quiz Night on Saturday evening, raising
over £400 for the charity. During the summer, Wednesday night suppers are
very popular, the meals being prepared by members. Details of coming events
are displayed on the Notice Board in the bar. Helpers and volunteers are always
needed, particularly during our Junior and Vets LTA Tournaments.

LTA JUNIOR OPEN TOURNAMENT
“The Club’s first Open Tennis Tournament was held for three days from 27th August 1929 and
resulted in a profit of £14. It continued annually soon incorporating juniors. In 1935 the Lawn
Tennis Association wrote to the Club saying the tournament had not received their sanction. The
matter was settled amicably since when it has continued annually in August, interrupted only by the
Second World War, and in 2013 we will be holding our 75th Junior Open.
Spectators are welcome, the standard will be high and Club members will be providing coffee, tea,

ADULT TENNIS
Whatever your standard of tennis
there is a suitable opportunity to play
here at the Milford Tennis and Squash
Club. The Club has over 400 tennis
playing adults. There is a “Rusty
Racquets” group that play between
12-2pm on Saturdays for those
returning to tennis or who have
just started. General club sessions
for all players are held on Wednesday,
Thursday and Saturday afternoons,
starting at 2pm. If you feel peckish
after playing on Wednesdays, we
hold Club suppers throughout the
summer. A Ladies morning is held
from 9.30am on Tuesdays and
a Men’s evening starts at 6pm
Monday evenings. Balls are provided.
The Club has 16 teams of which compete in the highest divisions in the Dorset
and Hampshire tennis leagues (lta.tournamentsoftware.com/sport/events) and
in addition we have a number of friendly matches with local clubs throughout
the year.
Still can’t get enough tennis? Then consider entering some, or all, of the 4
American Tournaments we hold throughout the year or the 4 Junior/Senior
Tournaments. The Club Championships begin in July and we also run 6 mixed
singles leagues in winter and summer. At any other time you can play in your
chosen group - singles or doubles - and relax in the new lounge or verandah
areas with a cup of coffee or glass of wine afterwards. If you want to hone your
skills then book a session with one of our coaching team.
There is something for every adult tennis player at Milford - including two LTA
Open Tournaments each year. New prospective members are welcome to come
and join in a club session to get a taste for the club.
If you wish to have any more information about our tennis activities then one of
the members of our Tennis Sub Committee will be glad to help.

MINI & JUNIOR TENNIS
Minis
There is a Mini Coaching Programme
for ages 4 – 10years accommodating
members and non members. In addition
there are a number of tournaments
including
regular
Junior/Senior
Tournaments, a Mini’s Open Series,
Junior Closed Tournament, Singles
leagues, as well as the LTA Junior Open
Tournament. Apart from the standard
coaching sessions, Russell, our Head
Coach and his coaching team run
holiday academies as well as individual
coaching sessions. The top juniors
attend our RMAcademy training weekly
to help further develop their tennis skills
with match play. Juniors & Minis have
priority on court 7 at all times unless it is
being used for coaching.
Juniors
Welcome to the Juniors! Our Junior
members are from 10 to 16 years of
age. Once past 16 all juniors proceed
into the adult programme. The Junior
section is vital to the future of the club
and at Milford we try to encourage
as many children as possible to play
tennis. They train either in Junior
coaching sessions and or the in
the RMAcademy session. They
can compete in our junior/senior
tournaments, singles leagues and LTA
open tournament.

Fitness
To get your best results on the court, it is best to train with court specific exercises
separate from your on court physical, technical, tactical, and mental work.
This can be as easy as split training where you will do intervals of running,
jogging and walking. For speed, skipping and shuttling in between court lines
are best. For strength it is best to use your own body weight ( trx training ) for
resistance so as not to bulk: for example press-ups, pull-ups, squat or lunges..
Tennis is an explosive game so plyometric training will help to develop speed
and power on the court. Try exercises such as squat jumps, bunny hops,
bounding, side throws and press ups. It is important to do all the above whilst
keeping your body under control in order to develop good core strength and
balance.
You should aim to do strength and endurance training during autumn and
winter months and speed and explosive exercises in spring and summer when
you have more matches.
Hint: If you feel anxious before match, try breathing slowly and deeply.
If you feel lethargic skip on the spot to raise heart rate.
Nutrition
To be able to get the best out of matches and training, your off court work is
very important. The vital times to eat are (1) at breakfast, since this is when
you will burn most calories, and will lose muscle if not refuelled, (2) at least an
hour before a match and (3) within an hour after a match..
Before a match or training, carbohydrates (pasta, rice, potato, cereal, beans,
bananas) are best to give you energy and improve your endurance. After a
match or training, it is important to include enough protein in the diet in order
for your muscles recover, beans, eggs, meat (poultry, beef, pork, etc.) fish,
cheese, milk, yogurt.
Don’t forget to drink plenty of water the day before training or a match. On the
day and during a match, constantly sip water and the next day continue to
rehydrate as your body is still recovering.
Have food and drink in your bag on court just in case.
