Joby Fields, 71, departed this life on Thursday, March 24, at home and
in the company of those who loved him. Born on April 3, 1944, at McCarr,
KY, he was the son of the late Okey and Ethel Duty Fields. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carlos Fields and Eugene Fields.
Joby was a man of steadfast faith in the Lord Jesus. He and his beloved
wife, Kay, sowed generously and cheerfully into the Kingdom of God at
every opportunity. Many local churches, schools, and charities (and families in need) over the years were recipients of their benevolence. The late
Rev. R.A. West was his close friend and pastor of many years. When Kay
felt the leading to build and pastor the church, Soul's Harvest, in Belfry,
KY, Joby was at her side and was her greatest encourager. Even when his health took a severe
curve and began to decline, he never lost his pleasant, peaceful composure. Their faith brought
them closer together and closer to God as they maintained an unwavering, righteously-stubborn
confession of healing and wholeness. This family's commitment to one another, and Joby's
commitment to them, has been a love story and such a light in troubled times.
Joby's children and grandchildren were his delight, and all it took to see him erupt into a
smile was to mention any of their names in conversation. He made it his life's work to provide
for his family and also to protect them; working many long hours to ensure they had everything
they needed and much of what they wanted-like a good father does-and yet always made time
for them. He made sure his mother was well cared-for of all the days of her life. His children
were raised in a Christian home, and he led their household by example. He had a wonderful
way of being firm but full of love; and the testament to his devotion to Kay and to them is the
fact that all of his children grew up to value marriage and have their own strong, inseparable
families. High school sweethearts, Kay and Joby's marriage was blessed with 49 years of mutual love, respect and devotion.
Joby was a veteran of the US Army. He was also a huge college sports fan; one of his sayings was, "It doesn't get any better than UK basketball and WVU football." He caught a game as
often as his schedule would allow, for as long as his health made travel possible. Joby had a
warm personality and a wonderfully-dry sense of humor; he enjoyed good, clean fun and even
an occasional harmless prank. He loved animals and was very compassionate to both pets and
strays. He was also attentive to the elderly and the needy, making sure seniors had house coal,
turkeys at Thanksgiving, and fruit baskets at various times of the year. When he operated coal
mines, he always kept an eye out for the people in the immediate vicinity of the mines. Much of
what he did for other people was done anonymously, and he never called attention to acts of
kindness he showed others.
Joby is most remembered for his humble demeanor and his compassion. He found great satisfaction and joy in helping many people have a place to work. His several coal-related compa47
R. E. Rogers Funeral Home
Belfry, Kentucky
nies-which ranged from actual contract coal mines to trucking, security, office, and custodial
workers for other coal facilities--helped hundreds of people between the 1980's and mid 2000's
to provide for their families. He was not only a businessman, but he was their friend; he was regarded fondly in both union and non-union circles as the man whose name, Joby, was so appropriate--for indeed he had the patience and temperament of Job. He exhausted every effort to
find ways to help others, and was one of the most approachable employers in all of Southern
West Virginia/Eastern Kentucky. He was proud of his coal mining heritage, he believed in the
coal industry, and was quick to say that mining was "in his blood."
Joby leaves a multi-faceted legacy centered around his love of God, family, and country; and
he leaves a huge pair of shoes that not many people could ever fill in as short a time as he did.
He will be so greatly missed by people of every walk of life, by everyone who ever got to know
him; and none will feel his absence as greatly as the family who waits to meet him again in
Heaven.
In addition to his unwavering, devoted wife, soul-mate and life partner Kay, remaining behind to cherish his memory are his beloved children: son, Joey (Stacy) Fields of Varney, WV;
daughters Kim (Chris) Epling of Ashland, KY; Angie (Derek) Rash of Belfry, KY; Melissa
(Brad) Webb of Wilmington, NC; as well as 14 treasured grandchildren; siblings. Maudine
Chafin and Harlos "Doodle" Fields of Red Jacket, WV, and Okey Fields, Jr., of Indiana.
A celebration of a life well-lived will be held Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 1:00 PM at the
Fundamental Christian Church at Varney. Pastors Gary Toler and Jason West will be officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday evening. The family will gather at 5:00 PM
and will welcome guests from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Joby will be laid to rest at Mountain View
Memory Gardens at Huddy, KY, with Son-in-Laws, Dr. Christopher Epling, Derek Rash, Brad
Webb and Grandsons, Joey Fields, Dalton Fields, Dagen Rash and Nephew, Jason Bryant serving as pallbearers.

Gary York Hackney was born September 12, 1949 in Williamson, WV to
Tennis and Virginia Hackney. He was one of nine children; James, Chester,
Raymond, Sunday Faye, Larry, Loretta, Janet and Randall.
Gary grew up on Octavia Hollow and graduated from Belfry High
School in 1967. He went on to receive a Bachelors Degree in psychology
from St. Martin's College in Washington State in 1974. While in Washington, he worked for a logging company in Aberdan, and made many lifelong
friends.
He eventually moved home to Kentucky and worked as a heavy equipment operator for several companies before becoming disabled.
Gary was married nearly 25 years to the love of his life, Melissa. Together they enjoyed
many moments of love and laughter, and he loved her very much- "I guess" : )
He was blessed with four children, Gary Jr., Christopher, Leigha and Carissa. They were
lucky to have been raised by such a great man. He instilled in them values and morals that they
will carry on to their children. He was always quick to offer them a helping hand, while encouraging their independence. "Remember, don't spend it, put it in the bank. Gotta save for a rainy
day."
He was a proud papaw to Lexie, CJ, Kenna, Ty and Jaxson. He enjoyed watching them play
sports, took them on outings and especially loved to fill them full of sugar and send them home.
He was notorious for dropping by for a five-minute visit and making sure they ate a bag of
powdered sugar donuts while he was there.
Speaking of drop offs, Gary loved to share the wealth with those he loved. He was a gardener and would often leave his "pickins" on doorsteps of neighbors, family and friends to enjoy. If
you missed out on the fresh produce, I'm sure he has blessed you with a case of vitamin water or
M&M's from Christian Appalachian Project. This gave him a reason to show up unannounced,
you see, Gary was a talker and he loved to visit and fellowship. He was a wise man and offered
advice, prayers, and guidance to anyone in need.
On a pretty spring day, he could be found on the front porch, riding his ATV or fishing with
one (or all) of his grandkids. He never wondered too far from the phone, in case somebody
"called about that car." He was first in line to pick up a trade-n-sell and always has a stack on
his "place" at the dining room table.
When summer rolled around all the boys had to be ready to put up his pool, so he would
have a good excuse for grandkids, cookouts and fried tomatoes. He spent most summers traveling. He was lucky enough to visit many places in the country. His last trip was to Florida, with
his family in tow, all 13 of them, four a four day Disney and beach excursion.
Fall brought hunting, which meant lots of early mornings with his sons and grandchildren
and hopefully leading to a bag of deer jerky. He loved trick or treat, at least the treat part. He
was infamous for his hockey mask and reveled in scaring the dickens out of anyone that was

unsuspecting, but this was a year round quality. You may get a birthday gift with nothing but an
IOU on a piece of paper, or a can of Luck's pinto beans, wrapped up for Christmas.
He did love Christmas, he loved the giving, fellowship and he loved Christ. His unwavering
faith in God has been his lifeblood since April 1, 1984. He was ordained a minister on June 14,
1997, and his mission was to spread the word of God. He proudly served as the assistant pastor
at Leckieville Freewill Baptist Church. He was a devoted servant. He would positively want to
leave his family and friends with a passage of comfort from the word, Psalms 18:2. " The Lord
is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge; my shield
and the horn or my salvation, my stronghold"
Gary passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, laughter and family on May 22, 2016 at
the Pikeville Medical Center. He is now rejoicing in his heavenly home.
He was preceded in death by his Mother, Virginia York Hackney; Father, Tennis Hackney;
brothers, Raymond Hackney, Chester Hackney and sister, Sunday Faye Hackney. His memory
will live on through his wife, Melissa Mihlbauer Hackney of the home; sons, Gary (Leslie)
Hackney Jr. of Burnwell, KY and Christopher (Jessica) Hackney of Williamson, WV; daughters, Leigha (Aaron) Gillespie of Lexington, KY and Carissa (Charlie) Dotson of Lake, WV;
grandchildren, Alexandra Hackney, Christopher Hackney Jr., Kenna Hackney, Caleb Ty Hackney and Jaxson Gillespie; siblings, James (Ann) Hackney, Larry (Becky) Hackney, Janet (Johnny-Deceased) Clevenger, Loretta (Mark) Jude, Randall (Jackie) Hackney and a host of family
and friends.

Marguerite Runyon Pope, 80, of Salem SC passed away on Friday June 3rd, 2016. Known as Marge, she was born August 26,
1935 to the late Flossie Day Runyon and James Merwyn Runyon in
South Williamson, KY. Her family roots in eastern KY went back
to the late 1700's. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, William Pierre Pope and her four children, William Peter Pope ( Linda),
Elizabeth Lynn Cowell (Matt), James Merwyn Pope (Betsy) of Roswell, GA and Victoria Lee Humphrey (Buddy) and eight grandchildren. In addition, Marge is survived by her sister, Eleanor "Eli"
Blackwell.
Marge attended the University of Kentucky where she met her future husband Bill at a ping
pong tournament. Married to an Army ROTC Captain and civil engineer for Conrail, Marguerite was uprooted from her native South Williamson home and then endured many moves.
When Bill was promoted to Track Supervisor, he took the family to Williamsport, PA, in 1968,
but when he was transferred, yet again, to Buffalo, NY, in 1969, Marge resisted and decided
Williamsport was the place to plant family roots on behalf of her children. The family stayed
until 1982.
Marguerite was known as a staunch democrat of the LBJ era, and she participated in the
League of Women's voter's organization and Newcomer's programs. Marguerite also branched
out into acting as a member of the Player's club that put on "Inherit the Wind" and "Guys and
Dolls" in South Williamsport. Before arriving in Williamsport she was "Penny Clean" for Penn
Central railroad, where she led a public campaign to inspect commuter cars for cleanliness. She
was a substitute teacher at St. Joe's Catholic School in Williamsport and attained her teaching
degree from Lycoming College. She joined Divine Providence as an intake counselor to their
psychiatric unit. After 3 of her 4 children graduated from Williamsport Area High School, she
moved to Mechanicsburg with her husband and youngest child. Bill's work then took Marguerite to Langhorne, PA, until his eventual retirement in 1996. In Langhorne, Marguerite worked
with incarcerated youths from the Philadelphia area who had committed violent crimes. She always had a desire to make the lives of others better, especially the young.
Marge had many passions, she owned and trained several dogs including a Wire Hair and
Kerry Blue Terriers, she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, researching and documenting family lineage, keeping up with friends and family, tutoring as a
volunteer, playing Bridge, completing Crossword Puzzles, watching birds (and squirrels) on her
bird feeder, reading and watching world events as reported on cable news ... and story-telling
about her father and her formative years in the mountains of Kentucky. Her love of family and
history instilled a great sense of loyalty in her family.

Most of all, Marge was a stalwart Kentucky Wildcat fan who loved to show her colors! Her
enthusiasm for listening to Cawood Ledford calling Kentucky basketball games on WHAS radio led to a night time drive to a Williamsport mountain-top in a snow storm to get better radio
reception. By sharing these special passions, Marge instilled a life-long, heart-felt loyalty to
Pike County, Kentucky, the state, in general, and basketball, in particular.
Bill and Marge retired close to their children of Atlanta, GA by moving to Salem, SC. in 1996
and have lived there for the last 20 years.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 11th at 1 PM in the R. E. Rogers Funeral Home
