US schools tie up with UC’s SPED program
The
University
of the Cordilleras this
school year, formed a
linkage with two school
districts in the United
States to assist Special
Education instruction
in the Philippines.
UC President Edil
berto de Jesus and Dr.
Douglas Householder,
director of the Integ
rated
Instructional
Services of the Ala
mogordo Public School
in New Mexico agreed
to formalize a linkage
that “will share aca
demic resources, facili
ties, and faculty mem
bers” to strengthen the
curriculum and up
grade the standards of
the Special Education
program of UC. As a
consequence of the tieup, US expertise and
experience shall be ap
plied to the UC SPED
modules in curriculum
development, teaching
strategies and class
room management.
The tie up was the
result of the visit of Dr.
Householder to UC in
June 2008. On June
24 and 25, Dr. House
holder and a team
from several US school
districts conducted a
seminar-workshop on
“Trends and Standards
in Teaching Special
Education” at the Uni
versity of the Cordille
ras. The team includes
Ms. Geraldine Peten,
principal of the Piñon
Unified School District
of Arizona, Ms. Lisa
Owsley, Vice President
of Integrated Instruc
tional Services INC. of
New Mexico, and Mr.
Jian Liu, consultant,
Educational and Pro
fessional
Resources
INC. based in Ohio.
More than a hun
dred special education
teachers from various
public and private
schools in the coun
try, including graduate
students enrolled in
the UC Master of Arts
program in SPED, at
tended the seminar.
Dr. Cleofas Ba
saen said, “The qual
ity upgrade of Special
Education coming at
this time, is quite for
tuitous,
considering
SPED has become the
subject of increasing
focus of Philippine ed
