THE
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
President Jeff Geralds and his
family, Kerra, Skylar and Josh
a huge success.
Well all I can say is wow! What a great conference and show the NAA put on in
Louisville Kentucky. Nothing but great response and conversation was heard throughout the association. I was proud of Kentucky heritage like horse racing with Church
Hill Downs being a great atmosphere to be the welcome center for auctioneers across
the world. I mean the food was great and those crab cakes, I think I ate 37of them…
don’t tell anybody. If you missed the conference and show I’m Sorry because it was
A big huge thank you to the executive director Kim Bouchey. She has gone above and beyond to see people and
making things go smooth this year for the association and me of course. I would also like to thank the remaining
office and directors and members for their work and dedication at the NAA conference and show. Welcome back
to Hayden Johnson and thank you to him and his wife for watching over our KAA booth while we were working
the IAC event. Amazing things happen when we all come together as a team. I hope this summer has been
busy for you like it has for me. Looks like auctions are going to be king of sales again for world market place.
In closing I am proud of this country and state we live in along with the association and the values it stands for,
I ask that if any members have a concern or need to ask a question feel free to contact me or the executive
director or directors to keep the association strong. God bless and sell’em high!
May peace and God’s blessing be with you.
Jeff Geralds

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — In February and March of 1836,
a legendary battle between the Republic of Mexico and rebel
Texan forces took place at the Alamo mission in San Antonio,
which was then called San Antonio de Béxar.
Texans were fighting for independence from Mexico, which was ruled by the
increasingly dictatorial Mexican President Santa Anna, who had abolished
the Constitution of 1824 and proclaimed a new constitution that increased
the power of the presidency and reduced the power of provincial governments.
The Texans lost the Battle of the Alamo in which 200-260 or so rebels
held the fort for 13 days against approximately 2,000 to 2,200 Mexican soldiers. The courage of conviction shown by the freedom fighters, most of
whom died during the predawn assault by Santa Anna’s troops on March 6,
and the deaths of such legendary martyrs as James Bowie, David Crockett
and William Barrett Travis, have elevated the battle and the Alamo itself
to iconic status the world over.
In addition to providing sheer inspiration (“Remember the Alamo!”),
the 13-day holdout, which was a key turning point of the Texas
Revolution, halted the progress of the Mexican forces and gave
General Sam Houston a chance to gather supplies and troops for
his victory at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21. Today, the
Alamo, which was originally named Mission San Antonio de
Valero, is the most visited tourist site in
Texas – attracting more than 2.5 million visitors per year.
One of the more famously frequent visitors is Phil Collins,
who was a drummer and
singer in the storied English
rock band Genesis, which he
joined in 1970 and left in
1996. Collins has also carved
out a successful career as a
UE

solo artist.
Y
Collins is considered an
EEKL
unlikely rock star because of his H E
everyman looks, bald pate, and
humble disposition.
When the eccentric Peter Gabriel left
Genesis in 1975 and after an extensive
search by the band for an outside replacement, Collins became the lead singer,

water is there for drinking or washing up. My hot water
heater means I don’t take cold showers. I can go to the
beach on vacation to rest from my work schedule. I can
spoil my grandchildren with extravagant gifts. Do I have
everything I want? No, but the one thing I do want money
can’t buy and only The Father can make it happen. I am
guilty of taking for granted what I do have and focusing
on what I don’t have. I want to have gratitude in my heart
for the wonderful things I have been given and stop worrying about when the Lord is going to deliver the promised
Victory for the thing I don’t have. I don’t know how to do
that except to try to do what that old hymn says: “Count
your many blessings, name them one by one. Count your
many blessings, see what God has done”. I am ashamed
that I have not counted these blessings every day. One of
the blessings I am most grateful for is my relationship with
the Kentucky Auctioneers Association. You are a blessing
to me and to many others. Thank you for being who and
what you are. Just in case this article makes you stop,
remember and be thankful for your blessings then it has
accomplished its purpose.

KAA Legislative Agent
It is 90 degees today but last week it got down into the
50’s at night. Weird, weird, weird. The world news is horrific. Malaysia Flight 17 was shot down last week. Today
the FAA has forbidden our national airline carriers from
flying into Ben Gurion (Tel Aviv’s airport) for the next 24
hours because a missile landed 1 mile from the airport.
The bodies from the Malaysia flight are just now being
returned to another part of the Ukraine. Their belongings
have been rifled and who knows what else has been done.
The civilized behavior that we take for granted such as
respect for the dead doesn’t seem to concern the individuals who are fighting in the Ukraine. I don’t know these
people and all the issues that surround the fighting but
the world is getting smaller, more dangerous and pretty
darn scary. Of course sitting here in my what seems to
be “safe office”, it is easy for me to be sympathetic one
minute and totally obviously the next. I am spoiled beyond
belief. I never have to worry about where my next meal
is coming from or where I am going to sleep at night. My
air conditioning keeps me comfortable. My closets are
full of clothes. When I turn on the water faucet, clean

THE NATIONAL AUCTIONEERS ASSOCIATION
Thanks to the Kentucky Auctioneers Association
To the members of the Kentucky Auctioneers Association:
I want to give a special shout out to Jeff Gerald and Kim Bouchay – it seemed
everytime I turned around, they were doing something! You both rock!
Last January you invited me to attend your
annual meeting so we could prepare for the
International Auctioneers Conference and
Show in Louisville in July. After that trip,
I knew that NAA members were going to
be in for a treat. You were so hospitable
to me that I feel in love with Kentucky and
the members who attended your meeting.
All in all, you were a fantastic partner for us and I just want you to know
on behalf of the NAA Board of Directors how much we all appreciate the
members of the Kentucky Auctioneers Association. Thank you, thank you,
thank you! People will be talking about Louisville for years to come!
Fast forward to Louisville in July….you wowed us with your hospitality! The
greeting we all received at Church Hill Downs set the tone for the entire
week’s activities. But you didn’t stop there. Your booth was outstanding
– people had so much fun talking about places to go, things to do in your
great state! You were friendly and informative.
And you didn’t stop there! Your work with the Fun Auction, IJAC and IAC
was outstanding. We had your help as ringmen and runners and never
had a hole to fill.
Looking forward to seeing all of you next year in North Dallas (Addison),
Texas! And in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need
anything – [email protected]
Thank you again!

And you didn’t stop there! The luncheon you helped co-host for the NAA
Auxiliary was one of the best I have seen in my six plus years at NAA.
HALL OF FAME
The KAA Hall of Fame was established to recognize Members who serve and promote the KAA. The selection committee will give
primary consideration to KAA members who have served as officers and/or directors, served on committees, those who regularly
attend meeting and the annual KAA Convention, and participate in the organization. Nominations of dues paying members who
have not met these guidelines, regardless of their contribution to the auction profession elsewhere, will not be considered.
However, other forms of recognition may be available, such as the Lifetime Achievement Award. Any questions should be
directed to Randy Moore or Jim Kannady Coordinators.
HALL OF FAME NOMINATIONS
The form to submit a nomination for selection to the Hall of Fame is available on the KAA website
http://kentuckyauctioneers.org or you may contact the KAA office and one will be mailed to you.
Nominations may be submitted at any time and will be retained for consideration at any time. the future.

KAA MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT
Dwight Butler
Dwight has had his Principle Auctioneers License since 1987 and is a proud graduate from the
Mason City College of Auctioneering. Dwight is the owner of Butler Auctioneers and sells real
estate, machinery, guns, antiques, vehicles and other personal property. We are fortunate enough
to have Dwight Butler as a State Legislator. Dwight is also a Realtor with Semonin Realtors in
Elizabethtown. When he was young his father would take him to the local livestock auctions. He
was going to the Garfield Livestock Auction Barn before he started going to school. It amazed
him to see how the auctioneer could communicate with the crowd and hold their attention. It was
something he wanted to do one day and now he has completed that dream. After being encouraged by Danny Ford to join the KAA Dwight now sees the benefits of belonging to a professional
association whose members want to help each other succeed. He has also seen the benefits
that come from the presence of the KAA in Frankford during the legislative session. Dwight’s
hobbies include reading biographies and looking for bargains. Favorite College team is the
Kentucky Wildcats but he says he also enjoys watching UofL.
Paul Malone
Paul is a principle auctioneer coming up on his 24th anniversary of his licensing. He is a full time
Auctioneer and owns Malone Realty and Auction Co., Inc. Paul’s specialty is Real Estate, Farm
Machinery, Timber and personal property. In Paul’s spare time he chooses to raise beef cattle.
Having a natural talent to bid call his parents encouraged him to pursue the Real Estate & Auction
Business. Paul has been a member of the KAA for 10 years and served on the board of directors
for nearly half of that time. Paul feels the contacts of fellow auctioneers from our state and other
states as well as the educational benefits are a few of the reasons he remains a member. When
not working his hobbies include horseback riding, riding four wheelers, fishing, wood working
and building. There should never be any doubt as to who his favorite College Team is…if he were
to be cut he would bleed blue, Kentucky Wildcats through and through.
Ritchie McGinnis
Ritchie is from Harrodsburg, KY and has been a Principle Auctioneer since 1983, owner of RM
McGinnis, LLC Real Estate & Auction Professionals. Working mainly with Real Estate, Antiques,
personal property and farm machinery it keeps him busy. Ritchie started out as a bid spotter,
clerk and cashier so the idea of becoming an Auctioneer to enhance his real estate business
came to life. For the past 25 years Ritchie has been an active member of the KAA, the ability to
network with other auctioneers, seek advice, learn from other professionals, and the educational
opportunities are the greatest benefits of being a member. Ritchie feels comfortable in being
able to call any auctioneer he knows through the KAA for advice and assistance and they have
never let him down. In his spare time he enjoys fishing and playing golf and absolutely rooting
to the Kentucky Wildcats.

NEWS FROM THE KENTUCKY BOARD OF AUCTIONEERS
By Kennith Hill, KBA Director
Well, it is already past the middle of July, the thoughts of Spring have long
since faded, and the recent cool snap reminded us that the earth continues
to turn, whether we are ready for it, or not.
It has been a busy year at the Board Office as we continue to serve the
Licensees and Consumers across the Commonwealth, while constantly
searching for ways to improve our performance. June, our renewal month,
was about as busy and hectic as one could imagine. This was only our second year of online renewals, and as with any new process, there were many
telephone calls and questions. Each morning, as we opened the doors to
the office, our goal was to help everyone get through the renewal period
as easily as possible. We put extra effort into saving our Licensee’s hardearned money by holding incomplete, or incorrect renewal applications, and
making sure the affected Licensees had every opportunity to correct any
shortcomings before additional fees were incurred. We entered the Month
of June with 2202 Licensees, but unfortunately we started July with only
2028 Licensees. This represents almost a 10% drop in Member-Licensees;
a trend, which we hope to reverse in the future.
We are still getting calls from Licensees, who renewed through the online
system, and are waiting to receive a new license. We remind everyone, who
took advantage of the convenient online renewal system, to complete the final step, and print their own license and pocket card. The system will remain
open until December 31, 2014, and Licensees, who previously renewed online, can return to the online portal on our website http;//www.auctioneers.
ky.gov, and login without additional fees. Once the login is complete, most
Licensees will find they are directed straight to the “download license” page.
Once the license is downloaded Licensees can print a 2015 license, and/or
save the license file to any digital device. Many Licensees are storing the
license on a “smartphone”, so it can be displayed as a digital license copy.
KRS Chapter 330 still requires that Licensees carry the traditional pocket
card, but changes are being considered that would allow this type of license
display. As we become more, and more dependent on handheld devices, it
makes sense that this would be permitted.
On July 07, 2014, new Administrative Fees for Applications and Services
went into effect, as our requested changes to 201 KAR 3:090 became effective. License applications, license renewals, examinations, and late fees all
increased by $25.00. We appreciate the support we received from the Kentucky Auctioneer’s Association in making these needed increases a reality.
When I appeared before the Legislative Committee the usual questions from
Legislators were greatly reduced when members of the panel were handed
the letter of support from KAA Directors. No one ever wants to increase fees,
and this decision was not taken lightly by the Kentucky Board of Auctioneers.
It was only after careful deliberation, and complete agreement that the funds
were necessary to keep pace with rising costs, and falling membership, that
the decision was made. Although the bulk of the increased fees will not be
realized until the next renewal period, these additional funds will allow us
to continue serving both Licensees and Consumers with the high level of
professionalism that everyone has come to expect.
I would like to offer a special “Thank You” to the many KAA members, who
through their supportive calls, letters, emails, and encouraging conversations, have made my short tenure as Executive Director a rewarding experience. As always, our doors, and telephone lines are open, and our email
addresses are logged on. We welcome your questions, comments, and suggestions. Have a great late-summer!
