FOREWORD
The
Central
Environmental
Authority
been
the
key
organization
for the protection and
improvement of the
environment in Sri Lanka has launched several programmes to enhance
public awareness on environmental issues.
In collaboration with NGOs in Sri Lanka, UN and other
donor agencies dealing with the environment, CEA has initiated
environmental awareness and education programmes aiming at the
general public. It has recognized the importance of educating the
general public on matters relating to environmental degradation,
protection and conservation.
An information source to help identify the environ
mentalists who are experts in various aspects of environment was a
long felt need. The Directory of Environmental Expertise in Sri
Lanka would satisfy
this requirement to some extent.
The present directory is an improvement of the previous
edition (1991) as it has a wider coverage of personnel and has more
comprehensive information. We hope that this directory would
benefit
the
information
users
both
at
the
national
and
international levels in identifying the Sri Lankan environmental
experts who are having relevant expertise.
The
Directory of Environmental Expertise in Sri Lanka
would help establish linkage between foreign and local experts for
exchanging their views and experiences.

Information System Project of the CEA which provided financial
assistance for this Directory. I convey my appreciation to
Mrs. W.G.S. Wimalasena, Senior Librarian and her staff for their
efforts in bringing out this publication.

INTRODUCTION
The Directory of Environmental Expertise in Sri Lanka is
compiled using the information received from the environmental
experts who responded to the advertisement published in newspapers.
The following
environmentalists;
criteria
was
adopted
for
identifying
the
-
Educational qualifications (those having a reasonable
knowledge and experience on an environmental subjects)
-
Persons holding key positions in environmental
organizations
-
Consultants/research workers of environmental projects
-
Authors of publications related to environmental matters
A computerized database was developed to store information on
the environmental experts. The directory contains some data
selected from the database. The database with detail information is
available at the CEA library for consultation.
Entries in the Directory have been arranged alphabetically by
the name of the environmental expert. A name index and a subject
index are provided. CEA intends updating the directory at regular
intervals. We welcome suggestions for the improvement of the
directory.
