P
rofessional soccer team New
York Cosmos hosted its most
recent “Back to School” children’s
soccer clinic this past Mon., Sept.
8th in East Harlem’s Thomas
Jefferson Park.
The citywide clinics were offered free to
players between the ages of six and fourteen,
and were led by professional coaches from the
Cosmos Training and Development program
together with team players, including Steven
Díaz and Dane Murphy.
“The Cosmos are committed to grassroots
soccer in New York,” said Cosmos Chief
Operating Officer Erik Stover in a statement.
“Providing local kids with the
opportunity to learn from our
coaches and players is just one
of the many ways in which we
can continue to give back to the
community.”
Among
the
non-players
in attendance on Monday were
Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer
and Assemblymember Robert J. Rodríguez,
who noted the high levels of enthusiasm.
“It’s a pleasure to have the New York
Cosmos offering free clinics to the youth in
our community,” he remarked. “Soccer is the
sport that is growing the most, and we have a
large Mexican community. Seeing our young
people participate has been really fantastic.”
For the team, the clinics have also
represented a comeback of sorts, particularly
with local fans.

Based on Long Island, the Cosmos
began to play in 1971, spending fourteen
seasons in the North American Soccer League
(NASL), the professional men’s soccer
league. The Cosmos won five Soccer Bowl
trophies and has brought some of the biggest
names in the sport to the United States, such
the legendary Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, and
Giorgio Chinaglia.
“We were one of the most famous teams
in the world, especially in the 70’s and 80’s,”
explained Jeff Kasakyan, the Cosmos’ Media
Director.
But it had been nearly 30 years since the
Cosmos last played in a professional league.
In 1985, the club was forced to shut down due
to financial hardship. It wasn’t until last year
that the franchise went back to business.
And they did it in style.
In 2013, the Cosmos won NASL’s fall
season championship – the sixth NASL title
in the club’s history.
“The fact that the Cosmos are here today is
a big deal,” said Borough President Brewer.

CUNY in the Heights
kicks off fall enrollment

T
he red carpet was out.
The bright crimson path, complete
with gold posts, was rolled out on Broadway
on separate occasions this past week – and
all were welcome to take a step forward.
CUNY in the Heights (CITH) kicked
off its newest enrollment season with two
Open Houses. An outpost of CUNY’s
Hostos Community College, CITH offers
residents of all ages career, academic and
recreational enrichment opportunities.
“CUNY in the Heights offers noncredited, personal enrichment courses,”
explained Seny Taveras, CITH’s
Executive Director. “We have college
[programs] for kids and after-school
programs to prepare them for the exams and
help them with homework.”
The CITH campus and its programs for
adults were specifically developed to provide
continuing education and career enhancement
programs, to aid local residents secure and
maintain viable employment in what is an
undeniably competitive job market.
“Students come to the school because they
want to find a job,” said Taveras. “We want to

be a part of that.”
“There is a huge need for knowledge,”
she added. “[Students] come here and take
certification courses. From here, they go into
two-year programs, and then to four-year
programs, and that is the goal. Ultimately, you
can’t succeed without education.”
Courses offered include computer training
certificate programs, such as Photoshop,
web development coding, animation and
video production. There are professional
certificate and license courses for such
careers as personal trainer, teacher assistant,
and security guard. Healthcare courses are
abundant, including classes for those wishing
to become electrocardiography technicians,
dental assistants and dialysis technicians.
Other popular offerings are English as a
Second Language (ESL), computer training,
and graphic design courses.
Mikala Sakai, CITH’s Director of
Programs, said the team is primarily focused
on ensuring that students are prepared to join
and stay in the workforce. She said the most
popular programs are those in the medical
field. Some offer externships, which increase
student’s first-hand familiarity with their
chosen field and networking opportunities.
“Hopefully, we can get students jobs,” she
said.
Carolina Demetria attended the first
Open House on Wed., Sept. 10th. Currently
employed as a waitress, she was seeking
information on the clinical medical assistant
course.
“I like working with people,” she said.

G
eneral George Washington’s
army was in full retreat when
something made them turn around
and fight.
“The Battle of Harlem Heights was a
turning point in the Revolutionary War,” said
Danielle Hodes, Education Director at the
Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum.
The museum will commemorate the battle
this year with a major family-oriented event
on Sept. 20th.
“It was the first major victory in the war,
and it was the first time that the Continental
soldiers were able to push back the British,”
she said.
By mid-September of 1776, soldiers in
the Continental Army were sick, hungry and
deserting. They’d slept outside for weeks,
mostly without a change of clothes. Many
hadn’t been paid in months.
Washington wrote John Hancock for
supplies. The soldiers desperately needed
more rations, tents, blankets and kettles. They
were about to leave the city, moving the sick
out first, along with whatever ammunition
they had.
On Friday, Sept. 13th, most of the army had
marched from Lower Manhattan to Harlem
Heights, on route to upstate New York. At the
same time, five British warships slowly sailed
up the East River. The British planned to invade Sunday. If
they’d waited slightly longer, they could have
taken New York City without a battle. The Brits came ashore at Kips Bay and

fired away at a small outpost of soldiers for
an hour. Washington was four miles north.
Hearing the battle, he raced downtown on his
horse, only to see his terrified men panic and
retreat. On the 16th, Washington was occupying
the home of Loyalists who’d fled the city. He
learned the British were advancing north. A
scouting party of about 100 men encountered
a pocket of British soldiers. The Continental
Army troops fought hard, but they were soon
outnumbered.
As they fled, the Brits sounded their bugles
with an infuriating call.
It was a foxhunt call, signaling that the fox
was in retreat with hounds on its tail. “The British army might have looked on
this as more sport than war,” explained Hodes.
Washington, a Virginia planter and
foxhunter, fully understood the disrespect as
intended and ordered a counterattack.
Nearly 1,800 men fought about 5,000
British troops in a buckwheat field where
Columbia University now stands. The battle
lasted for hours, and slowly the red coats lost
ground and ultimately fled. “It was kind of a morale victory, too,”
said Hodes. “At this point, they hadn’t really
been successful and the whole army hadn’t
coalesced as one Continental Army.”
Washington’s headquarters, overflowing
with his staff and officers, is now the MorrisJumel Mansion. Along with Washington,
approximately 50 people slept there during
wartime, filling the hallways, basement and
attic. The rest of the soldiers camped outside
on the surrounding countryside. The home belonged to Mary Philipse
Morris and her husband Roger, who fought
alongside Washington in the French and
Indian War. After the Morris family fled, two
of their slaves stayed behind. One of them,
Martha, cooked for Washington. “We know she was paid for her work,”
Hodes said. Washington, who traveled with a full set
of china during wartime, ate better than most
of his men. Regular soldiers had ration packs
with dried meat, salt and rice. “Originally they were also given whiskey,”
said Hodes. “Later it was replaced with
coffee.”
The Mansion’s Battle of Harlem Heights
event is free with museum admission and
explores how soldiers spent time during
war. The Sept. 20th event has a variety of
family activities.

A step up

Art installation unveiled
on 187th Street stairs

connecting Fort Washington
Avenue and Overlook Terrance,
are part of a new art installation
presented by the Department of
Transportation (DOT).
The DOT’s Urban Arts Project, which
also sponsored the pod sculpture currently
displayed in Inwood, has chosen the iconic
uptown step-street for its latest temporary
display.
A painted design, intended to honor the
area’s Revolutionary War heritage, has
been added to the stairs by artist Steed
Taylor, who has said “roads are the skin of
a community.”
The design is a tribute to the soldiers who
died while defending the Fort Washington
area during the American Revolution.
A DOT spokesperson said the project was
completed on Sun., Sept. 14th after a few
days of work.
The artwork will remain on the steps for a
period of one year. Taylor, whose work has been shown
throughout the New York area, is known for
his “road tattoo” art on public streets.
Described by the artist as “commemorative,
site-specific,
community-based
public
artworks,” the road tattoos represent Taylor’s
vision of repurposing common public spaces
for art and memorials.
In 2012, the DOT also sponsored one
of Taylor’s road tattoo installations on the
Naples Street steps in the Kingsbridge
section of the Bronx.

Columbia Celebrates
Hispanic Heritage Month
Manuel Ramos Otero is one of the most important Hispanic
Caribbean writers of the late-20th century and Puerto Rico’s
first major openly gay writer. Deeply innovative in both themes
and form, Ramos Otero’s work spans a wide range of genres,
including the essay, novel, short story, and poetry. Through
his publishing and organizing efforts, Ramos Otero also made
important contributions to building New York’s Latino literary
community. He died in 1990 of AIDS-related complications at
the age of 42.

North Cove Community Cleanup The Manhattan Wetlands and Wildlife
Association will host a community clean
up on Sat., Sept., 27th at the North Cove,

Magic in the making
C
assandra Ruiz never imagined
she’d marry a magician.
Or that she would be wed in a palace. But that was before.
Ruiz and Ben Nemser met at a party in
2009. They were the same age and had friends
in common. He invited the 23-year-old singer
and actress to see him perform a few days
later, on Valentine’s Day.
It was an enchanting evening that lasted a
long time. As they got to know each other, it
was obvious how much they complemented
each other. Ruiz learned magic. Nemser expanded his
act to include different types of entertainment.
They teamed up and have since performed
together.
In one performance, one of them is tied
up, Houdini-style, inside a box, while the
other locks it down. Then they magically,
instantaneously, trade places. In another instance, Nemser borrows a $20
bill from an audience member and rips it to
shreds. Then it mysteriously reappears, intact,
inside a banana.
There are other notable moments.
Ruiz sings while making objects float in
mid-air. She is also known to open a fan and
then conjure up snow on-stage – all while her
dress turns into a long evening gown.

Now, after five years, they’re getting
married. The Washington Heights couple
looked everywhere for a venue. They found it
right in their back yard, at the United Palace
Theater, at 175th Street and Broadway.
The young magicians have a deep resonance
with the old vaudeville house.
It will be perfect backdrop for their Oct.

assandra Ruiz nunca imaginó que se
casaría con un mago.
Ni que se casaría en un palacio.
Pero eso fue antes.
Ruiz y Ben Nemser se reunieron en un parque
en 2009. Eran de la misma edad y tenían amigos
en común. Él invitó a la cantante y actriz de 23
años de edad a verlo actuar unos días después,
el día de San Valentín.
Fue una velada encantadora que duró mucho

Ruiz aprendió magia. Nemser amplió su acto

En otro caso, Nemser pide prestado a un
miembro de la audiencia un billete de $20
dólares y lo rompe en pedazos. Entonces

interior de un plátano.
Hay otros momentos notables.
Ruiz canta mientras hace flotar objetos en
el aire. Ella es también conocida por abrir un
ventilador y luego evocar nieve en el escenario.

Film Come to Life. The ceremony might be
traditional, but the entertainment is as unique
and lavish as the gilded 1930’s movie house. Cigarette girls will hand out custom decks
of cards as favors. Just after cocktail hour,
The Modern Gypsies will perform an aerial
act on stage. Nearly everyone involved in the
wedding event is a friend.
“We have a lot of creative friends –
magicians, circus performers, musicians,”
Nemser said. “Working in entertainment,
there’s just a community of people. When
one of their own is throwing a party, everyone
kind of chips in.”
In the Jewish faith, there’s an old tradition
that the bride and groom are the king and
queen on their wedding day and their friends
entertain them. The couple didn’t know this
until they described their wedding to their
rabbi. “The friends will come up and juggle for
you,” Nemser explained. “We kind of took
that to the whole next level.”
The groom began his magical studies at
age eight. His brother had a magic kit and
played with it for 15 minutes before giving it
up. Nemser studied one trick, mastered it, and
kept going. By 11, he was going to magicians’
conventions and magic camps. He interned
for Steve Cohen, who has mystified audiences
at the Waldorf Astoria for a decade and half. Now, Nemser is a regular at Monday Night
Magic in Greenwich Village and makes his
living at legerdemain, or sleight of hand,
performing at parties and venues around the
city. Sometimes audience members sit back with
their arms folded over in front, as if to say,
“Okay, amaze me. I dare you.” Some even tell

short film that takes the classic Romeo
and Juliet tale and gives it a little
Uptown swag with a little Dominican/
Haitian historical baggage thrown in
for good measure. The folks behind the
project created a really cool Indiegogo
campaign, with a bunch of awesome
perks, to help make the movie a reality.

The People’s Theatre Project
(PTP) kicks off their latest season with
Eddie’s Perejil, a searing solo performance
from Edward Paulino about the brutal
1937 Haitian massacre on Saturday,
September 20th at 7:30 at the Alianza
Cultural Center (530 West 166th
Street). Expect a night of art, activism,
theater, culture and community. The
PTP never disappoints. After the show

exhibit from the Haitian-Dominican border by

Serendipity and sweet cream
A
ll winter long Wilhelmina
Grant has been cooking up
new work in her studio.
Her latest show, “From Kitchen to Curb,”
opened at the Home Sweet Harlem Bistro on
Amsterdam Avenue and 135th Street this past
Sat., Sept. 6th.
The show is a departure from her usual
work, which surprised even the Harlem-based
artist.
Grant is known for mixed media
assemblages with themes of health, antiviolence and urban issues. A two-time
survivor of breast cancer, she is the founder of
Survivors Inspiring Sisters Through Art and
Advocacy, or SISTAAH, Inc. Many of the 25 pieces on display were
created during big snowstorms. When other
people didn’t come through and backed out of
obligations because of the weather, she spent
more time in her studio.
“I felt very isolated,” she said. “One
particular weekend, a lot of that angst and
disappointment and isolation went into seven
new pieces.”
One of her pieces, originally called Pulling
the Weight, epitomizes those feelings. Later,
Grant changed the name to Holding it Down. The collage’s main element is an object
she found in the street several years ago that
resembles vertebrae. “I think it is a
tie-down that fell off a truck,” she
said. “It just worked its way into my
art now.”
“The whole premise behind that is
how women are the backbone of the
house, the backbone of society,” she
said.
Her favorite found objects are
things that fall off of cars and trucks
and get smashed and reshaped. She
found an oil pan in the street and
when she picked it up and turned it
around, it resembled a profile. She
paired it with steel wool for hair,
a hot comb and added objects that
look like eyes.
The resulting work, Hot Comb
in the Kitchen, actually resembled
a friend and neighbor who recently
passed away. “That particular
neighbor gave me the hot comb,”
she said.
Grant’s work habits make for
serendipitous art. “I’m a flinger,”
she said. “When I’m in my studio
and I’m looking for something, I

Heights, Inwood and Hamilton
Heights.
The Upper Manhattan Open House Expo,
to be held on Sun., September 21st, will give
potential buyers and renters the chance to
tour exclusive co-op, condo, townhouse and
rental listings and learn about Northern
Manhattan from experienced uptown
real estate brokers.
Apartment hunters are focusing
their attention uptown because the area
provides more affordable options for
living in Manhattan, explained Dee Rieber,
Co-Chair of REBNY’s Upper Manhattan

fashionistas flocked to the
Fourth Annual Uptown Fashion
Week, held this past Sept. 9-12 at
the United Palace.
The event exhibited 14 designers for
what organizers dubbed “an alternative high
fashion destination for emerging, established,
and celebrity fashion designers” with the
purpose of building a “fashion bridge from
downtown to uptown.”
“I think that New York Fashion Week
is such an exciting week and has such an
economic impact,” said Albania Rosario,
Founder and CEO of Uptown Fashion Week.

dward Paulino always loved
visiting the Dominican
Republic.
Growing up the 80’s, his Lower East Side
life included the projects and a sprawling
crack epidemic. It was a sharp contrast with
a land that was always bright and sunny. He’d
spend time outside, working on his family’s
farm and riding horses. Though he was American, his cibaeño
accent gave him social capital. He got all
of the jokes and the double entendres. He
thought he was an insider. But all of that changed in an instant.
“It was like a punch in the gut,” he said in
recollection of his view of his family’s native
land shifted.
Eddie’s Perejil, kicks off the sixth season
of the People’s Theatre Project on Sept. 20
at the Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center.
The 20-minute, one-man play is a departure
for the ambitious Washington Heights theater
group.
The autobiographical play recounts how
Paulino first found out about the 1937
Parsley Massacre ordered by President Rafael
Leónidas Trujillo Molina. It is estimated that
anywhere from 2,000 to 30,000 people were
killed with machetes and bayonets.
Paulino teaches global history and the
history of genocide at John Jay College.
The play is an emotional journey about
coming to terms with the country he loves.
“Eddie created this play as a way to heal
and move forward,” said Mino Lora, cofounder of the People’s Theatre Project. Project Perejil
“I felt compelled to express myself,”
explains writer Edward Paulino.

The play is also part of a larger event that
includes a photo exhibit by Tony Savino,
and a conversation with Paulino, Claudia
De La Cruz of Da Urban Butterflies and
Angela Fernández of the Northern Manhattan
Coalition for Immigrant Rights. The event is
produced in part by novelists Junot Díaz and
Julia Álvarez.
“I’m not a playwright or an actor,” Paulino
said. “But I needed an outlet. I felt compelled
to express myself in this way.”
The play takes its name from the method
Dominican soldiers used to distinguish
Haitians from Dominicans. People were
asked to pronounce perejil, or the Spanish
word for parsley. The two groups say it differently.
Dominicans tend to trill their r’s.
But anyone responding in the broader,
flatter Haitian accent was killed. “It’s important to remember that many
Dominicans were killed, too,” he said.
Paulino first found out about the Haitian
massacre when he was 20, doing research for
his thesis. Sifting through a box of documents
at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde
Park, New York, he came across a diplomatic
communiqué from the U.S. ambassador to the
Dominican Republic, R. Henry Norweb, to
President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The words “systematic campaign of
extermination” jumped out at him. Since then,
he’s spent nearly two and a half decades of his
academic career researching genocide and the
Haitian Massacre in particular. His book on
the subject is due out in 2015.
“We’ll never know why he ordered the
massacre,” Paulino said. It’s often claimed
Trujillo wanted to “lighten” the country by
eliminating darker-skinned Haitians who
surreptitiously crossed the border into the
Dominican Republic. But power and control were also important
to a despotic ruler obsessed with details, dress
uniforms and who demanded that nearly
every structure in his country be named after
him or a family member.
“Part of it was that he was trying to regulate
the region of the country that was historically
difficult to govern,” Paulino said. The porous
border was a weak spot where insurgents
could attack the government and easily
escape.
“It was another way to project power in the
region where the state had been historically
weak,” he said. Paulino, with Julia Álvarez and other
activists, is also the co-founder Border of

"Nunca sabremos por qué ordenó la masacre",
dijo Paulino. A menudo se afirma que Trujillo
quería "aclarar" al país eliminando a los haitianos
de piel más oscura, quienes cruzaron la frontera
subrepticiamente hacia la República Dominicana.

hambre.
Ese es el mensaje de los dueños del nuevo
Pizza Studio, el primero en la costa oriental de la
franquicia nacional de pizza.
Su primera sucursal fue abierta en el 2013
en California, donde ahora hay 14 locales.
La franquicia también tiene restaurantes en
Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Minnesota y Utah, y es
considerada uno de los conceptos de comida al
detal de mayor crecimiento en el país.
Pizza Studio abrió sus puertas en el 444 Este
Fordham Road en el Bronx a finales del verano.
Pero tenga cuidado – esto no es el lugar
habitual de una pedazo por un dólar.
En su lugar, el espacioso restaurante pretende
ser un auténtico lugar para visitar. La decoración
es moderna sin pretensiones, y la atmósfera es
cálida y acogedora. Los clientes son recibidos
con una gran pared en la que se puede leer citas
inscritas de figuras como desde Albert Einstein
hasta Henry David Thoreau.
Y justo cuando su propio genio comienza
a emerger, es presentado con la oportunidad
de colocar su innovadora creatividad en plena
exhibición.
En Pizza Studio, los clientes tienen la
oportunidad de crear su propia “obra maestra” de 11
pulgadas, seleccionan la masa, la salsa, el queso y
hasta los topes. “Lo que es especial es que usted
construye su pizza desde el principio hasta el final”,
dijo el Gerente General Charles Ellis.
El primer paso es seleccionar la masa. Hay
cinco opciones: tradicional, integral y semilla
de lino, romero, ‘firecracker’ y sin gluten. Las
selecciones del queso y la salsa son cuatro cada
uno. Escoja desde un recién queso mozzarella
rallado, queso parmesano, feta y queso
de cabra, y escoja salsas de pesto
de albahaca, aceite de oliva extra
virgen, tomate y barbacoa.

“Servimos todos los

Ten por seguro, si se gastan tus jugos creativos,
puedes contar con una clase de menú lleno
con “Originales de Artistas Hambrientos”. Una
rápida mirada, y puedes decidir entre selecciones
tradicionales tales como margarita, pepperoni, pollo
y vegetales. Hay agua embotellada, teces y bebidas
gaseosas, también galletas recién horneadas.
Studio también hace honor a su nombre
involucrando a clientes y artistas. Cada restaurante
ofrece una pared donde se exhiben trabajos de
artistas locales.
Los empleados de Studio ofrecen sugestiones
que ayudan a navegar el extenso menú.
Una vez su pizza está servida, le dan servilletas
y vienen para ver si todo esta bien.
“Deseamos saber tu nombre”, explicó
Ellis.
Y tu pizza.

Each youth participant received a Cosmos

Cosmos’ final four home matches of the
NASL fall season next year.
Close friends Malia, Nyla, and Chloe, all
eleven, have been playing since they were six
years old at the Manhattan Soccer Club. Each
had a different take on why she appreciated
playing.
“I like soccer because it’s a team sport,”
said Nyla.
“I like the strategy, the plays that you can
make,” added Chloe.
Malia said it was the challenge that she
enjoyed. “It’s fun, and hard at the same time.”

resident graduated high school in 2013 and

CITH program because it was accessible and
affordable.
“I want to go to the point,” he said.
There are also courses for children.
“We have academic and enrichment
programs,” said CITH Program Coordinator
Elizabeth Areche. “Academic programs
[offer] the extra push in school for the exams;
it’s mostly for improving writing and math
skills. The enrichment programs are piano,
karate, ballet, guitar and yoga.”
Classes are kept small in size, with a
maximum of fifteen students, so as to
guarantee personalized instruction.
CITH also attracts those who hold
bachelors and masters degrees and are seeking
a different direction or want to acquire new
skills.
Anely Bolques has a college degree in
Business Administration, but is mulling a
change.
“I want to become a nurse,” explained
Bolques. “I figure the certified nursing
assistant class will help me see if I actually
like it, before I actually commit to going to
nursing school.”
CITH also offers some lottery-based
programs free of cost.
“We offer free health care training
programs, CNA, Health Information
Technology. Students have to be 18 years
or older, and they have to have a source of
income,” said Tanya Thomas, Outreach
Specialist for Allied Health Career Pipeline
Program at Hostos Community College. “We
also offer career services, case management
and job placement.”

Among them was Jeannette Matos from
the Northern Manhattan Improvement
Corporation (NMIC), a non-profit organization
that provides legal and immigration services.
“I screen for eligibility for SNAP
(Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program),”
said NMIC coordinator Matos.
Her colleague Edwin Rosado stood nearby.
“I do recruitment for some of our young
adult program,” he explained. “We help get
[residents] back into education to join the
work force.”

Little League Volunteers Needed
The Police Officer Michael J. Buczek Little League is looking for
community residents willing to help out with its 27th season next spring.
Founded in 1988, the league has played all its games on its field at the
northern end of Highbridge Park. The program has since served thousands
of local youngsters between 5-12 years old.
Thirty-five of the Little Leaguers have grown up to become NYPD
officers, and two of them are professional ballplayers in the minor leagues
working their way up to the majors.
The 24 teams need managers, coaches and support staff.

Ruiz is relatively new to the art of
prestidigitation. The two collaborate by
imaging an effect they want to create and
figure out how to do it. People who’ve studied
magic a long time tend to think differently,
Nemser said.
“They might know a few different ways to
make things float and just work with that.”
Ruiz wanted to be performer at young age,
and studied theater and choral singing. Magic
gives her the opportunity to showcase her
talent and maintain creative control over her
work.
She comes from a large Columbian and

La expo Upper Manhattan Open House, que
se celebrará el domingo 21 de septiembre,

uptown community, which has such a big
market for fashion. I felt there was a need.”
The event’s inclusive themes were
evidenced in the diversity glimpsed behind
the curtain – and on the runway.
One local designer, Eduardo Rosario of
Washington Heights, for example, exhibited
his collection “City Chic”. On hand too were
designers from Puerto Rico, Colombia, and
Bolivia, and former Miss Universe Stefanía
Fernández of Venezuela showcased her
designs.
Organizers also ensured that plus-size
models were well-represented on the runway.
“Fashion should be accessible for
everybody, no matter what size they are,” said
Rosario. “I don’t want to limit it.”
Judging by the attendance and interest,
she believes Uptown Fashion Week will only
continue to grow.
“I think people are taking this in in a
very positive way,” she said. The founder is
committed to building on the event’s success.
“I don’t want this show to become an
alternative; I want it to be the destination for
Fashion Week.”
