September 11, 2016 WHAT`S IN YOUR HEART?
September 11, 2016
Twenty-Fourth Sunday
in Ordinary Time
1883-2016
A Prayer of Hope
Jesus, thank You for
desiring to dwell in me.
Thank You for having
made me to receive You,
to bear Your life into a
world that needs You
desperately. I wonder how
it could possibly be that
I am meant to bear that
kind of hope within me.
But You assure me that
all You need is my
simple yes and You will do
the rest. Amen.

WHAT’S IN YOUR HEART?
"Who brought you out of the land of Egypt?” The reading from the Book of Exodus uses
this phrase three times, and each differently. First God reminds Moses he is the leader of the
people, and it’s his job to tell them about God’s wrath. Then God tells Moses what to say,
reminding the Israelites of what the God they are betraying did for them. Finally Moses
turns these words on God: “Don’t forget that you who saved them made a promise, and that
means you have an obligation not to destroy those to whom you made that promise.”
This story reminds us that it can be easy to let someone else do the dirty work, to shift
blame, to hold others to standards you yourself are not maintaining. It’s also easy to forget
promises, especially when you’re angry.

FROM THE PASTOR
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
My Dear Brothers and Sisters
.
in Jesus,
.
.
.
.
Today marks the 15th Anniversary
.
of the four coordinated terrorist
.
.
attacks by the Islamic terrorist
.
.
group al-Qaeda against our country
.
.
on the morning of September 11,
.
.
2001. The attacks killed 2,996 people and injured over 6,000 oth.
ers and caused at least $10 billion in property and infrastructure
.
damage and $3 trillion in total costs. It was a day that all of us wish ..
.
had never happened.
.
.
.
I was just getting ready to cross the parking lot at Saint Aloysius to
.
.
offer a funeral mass in the church, when I received a call from a
.
.
friend urging me to hurry up and turn on the TV for a plane had
.
crashed into the one of the World Trade Center Towers. And so be- .
.
gan possibly the most horrific tragedy visited upon our country. All .
of us were changed. Our way of life was never to be quite the same. ..
.
.
As I reflect on the aftermath, I remember that one of the transform- .
.
ing experiences of those sad days was that everyone really had to
.
.
ask themselves what was important in life. Certainly the normal
.
.
things that we get so excited by were all cast aside by the magni.
tude of what had happened. The preciousness and also the precari- .
ous and vulnerable nature of the fundamental gift of life burned its ..
.
way into the depth of our souls.
.
.
.
Years later, the 9/11 Memorial opened in lower Manhattan and I
.
.
didn’t get there right away. I don’t know why. Strangely enough I
.
.
had been scheduled to visit the site with a group from Donovan
.
.
Catholic…it was the day after my brother, John died. I went any.
way. I saw where Eileen Fagan’s sister Patricia’s name was in.
scribed and said a prayer. Then, inside the museum, I was overcome ..
.
(and I wasn’t alone) by the immensity of it all – the people, the
.
.
building, the scale of everything… and a deep, deep sense of loss.
.
.
.
A lesson learned from the whole experience was the realization
.
that, although it is a constant struggle, we ought not to cling to too ..
much. In a moment, everything in our lives can be thrown up in
.
the air and without a clear sense of what can truly survive. The way ..
forward can be almost impossible. Yet, with God’s grace, we were ..
.
able to experience the height of human sacrifice and the ability of
.
.
our brothers and sisters to manifest heroic love. Today, as we re.
member, let us pray for God’s grace and for an ever-increasing
.
.
capacity to love one another as Christ has loved us.

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION AVAILABLE: Saint Joseph’s is now offering
Spiritual Direction on a limited basis. In Spiritual Direction, the trained Director helps directees to become more aware of God in their own life experiences. The director focuses on God’s presence in each one’s life, prayer and communication. Spiritual Direction sessions are not geared to problem solving or
counseling, rather, the goal of Spiritual Direction is to gain a deeper relationship with our Lord Jesus. Sessions are conducted one-on-one and are completely confidential. Again, it is not therapy.

ST. JOSEPH’S
PAGINA OCHO
MENSAJE DEL PARROCO
Estimados Hermanos y
Hermanas en Jesús,
Hoy marca el 15 aniversario
del ataque terrorista contra
los Estados Unidos la
mañana del 11 de
septiembre, 2001 por el
estado Islámico el grupo alQaeda. En el cual murieron
2,996 personas y más de
6000 resultaron heridos. Hubo daños de $10 billones en propiedades e
infraestructura y $3 trillones fue el costo total. Fue un día que deseamos
que no hubiera ocurrido. Así comenzó la tragedia más terrible infligida
a nuestro país.
preocupábamos no tenía sentido.
