Retirement Fund. This collection is a primary source of funding
to care for the retired priests of the Diocese. As they have given
their lives in service to our Lord and His Church, your
contribution says “THANK YOU” for their ministry and helps
them to live with dignity in their final years. Please give

Next weekend, we will have our regular second collection for
Outreach.
Our Outreach collection benefits many families in our community, as well as our St. Martha’s Pantry. Your

What’s Inside the Church? The Tabernacle
The most important things in a Catholic church are the altar and the
tabernacle. The tabernacle is where the Eucharist is kept. Jesus is
truly present in the consecrated hosts. The word tabernacle means
“tent.” CCC 1379 says that the tabernacle “should be in an especially
worthy place in the church.” Usually, the tabernacle is located
directly behind or near the altar. Some churches have a designated
chapel reserved for the tabernacle. A tabernacle must be made of
non-transparent material, be immovable, and be kept locked so that
the Blessed Sacrament cannot be stolen or desecrated.

WITNESS TO FREEDOM : Little Sisters of the Poor
When a blind, paralyzed, elderly widow needed a place to live, Jeanne Jugan gave up her own
bed so that the woman could have a comfortable place to sleep during her last years on earth.
What began as a small community of a few single women taking in poor strangers in rural
France in the early 1800s became an order now known as the Li le Sisters of the Poor. The Li le Sisters carry on the work of
their founder, who was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. The Li le Sisters’ mission is “to offer the neediest elderly of
every race and religion a home where they will be welcomed as Christ, cared for as family and accompanied with dignity un l
God calls them to himself.” Con nuing the tradi on of St. Jeanne Jugan, the Li le Sisters beg for all that they need to take care
of the elderly poor, and they do not accept guaranteed forms of income. The Li le Sisters established roots in several countries,
arriving in the United States in 1868. They now have 27 nursing homes across the U.S., where they take care of poor, elderly
residents.
Unfortunately, a recent mandate from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) would force the Li le Sisters to
arrange for coverage of abor on-inducing drugs, contracep ves, and steriliza on in their employee health plans. If the Li le
Sisters do not arrange for coverage of these “services,” then they face massive fines from the federal government, totaling
approximately $70 million per year. The Li le Sisters were forced to sue the federal government in order to stave off these
poten ally crushing fines on their ministry. Their case has recently been heard before the U.S. Supreme Court, which will decide
whether to vindicate the Li le Sisters’ rights to free exercise of religion under federal law. The Li le Sisters have argued that
religious freedom exists not only for houses of worship but also for those who serve others, such as in ministry to the poor,
which is part and parcel of the Catholic faith. The Li le Sisters have dedicated their lives to following Christ in service to the
world. We pray that the Court will uphold their freedom to serve and that our government will respect the freedom of all people
of faith to contribute to the common good. Let us pray for the Li le Sisters of the Poor!
TESTIGOS DE LA LIBERTAD: HERMANITAS DE LOS POBRES
Cuando una viuda anciana, ciega y paralí ca necesitaba un lugar donde vivir Juana Jugan le dio su cama para
que la anciana pudiera tener un lugar cómodo donde dormir durante sus úl mos años en la erra. Lo que
comenzó como una pequeña comunidad de algunas mujeres solteras que acogían a forasteros pobres en la
Francia rural a principios del 1800 se convir ó en una orden ahora conocida como las Hermanitas de los Pobres. Las Hermanitas de los Pobres
con núan el trabajo de su fundadora, quien fue canonizada por el Papa Benedicto XVI en 2009. La misión de las Hermanitas de los Pobres es
“ejercer la hospitalidad con los ancianos necesitados de todas las razas y religiones, ofreciendo espacios en los que se promueva, defienda, cuide y
celebre la vida, facilitando el desarrollo integral del anciano, y permi endo la par cipación ac va de cuantas personas quieran colaborar en nuestra misión”. Con nuando la tradición de Sta. Juana Jugan, las Hermanitas de los Pobres, piden todo lo que necesitan para cuidar a los ancianos
pobres, y no aceptan formas garan zadas de ingresos. Las Hermanitas de los Pobres establecieron raíces en varios países, y llegaron a Estados
Unidos en 1868.
Actualmente enen 27 hogares de ancianos en todo Estados Unidos donde cuidan a los residentes ancianos pobres. Lamentablemente, una orden
reciente del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos (HHS) de Estados Unidos obligaría a las Hermanitas a incluir cobertura para drogas aborvas, an concep vos y esterilización en los planes de salud para sus empleados. Si las Hermanitas no ofrecen cobertura de estos “servicios”, se
