the 2006 r e por t to the commun i t y “ K WMU helps bring c l a r i t y t o com plex issu es, to ma ke s e n s e o f the world aro u n d us .” — Patricia Wente, Director and General Manager DEAR FRIEN D OF KWMU, T HA NK YO U KW M U LISTENER ! Technology has changed the way we consume news and other information. Web streaming, podcasting and satellite radio are just a few examples of how different broadcasting has become. Listeners now have a variety of choices of how, where and when they get information. KWMU strives to stay ahead of the technology curve to bring you in-depth news, intelligent talk and great entertainment anytime, anywhere and in any way you choose. The University of Missouri-St. Louis is pleased to serve the community through the public airwaves of KWMU. As the premier public research university in St. Louis, our business is educating people. Through in-depth news coverage and thought-provoking programs, KWMU educates its listeners by providing them with a variety of different perspectives and presenting them with all of the facts needed to make informed decisions. Whether at the computer, in your car or at home on the treadmill, KWMU brings you thought-provoking programs that address current issues relevant to your daily life. KWMU helps bring clarity to complex issues, to make sense of the world around us. Public radio means public service — providing you with everything you need to be a well-rounded, well-informed individual. That is KWMU’s mission. That is the essence of education. Without your support, there would be no KWMU. Your financial commitment to KWMU makes it possible for us to bring you quality programming and to fulfill our mission. Together we educate and empower people to make good choices and sound decisions. Thank you for being a great partner! Sincerely, Patricia Wente Director & General Manager That is public radio. That is KWMU. So thank you for your part in helping KWMU educate the community. We are truly grateful for your support! Thomas F. George Chancellor University of Missouri-St. Louis St. Louis on the air A day in the life of a S.L.O.T.A. host The reason KWMU is important to the community and to me is that it is impossible to listen without feeling that you have learned something. I hope that St. Louis on the Air compliments that overall NPR approach. Personally, it does for me. With the opportunity to do four programs a week, it offers me the chance to learn something about a variety of subject matter, and to approach diverse subjects in depth. My previous life as a television journalist had many opportunities for gratification, but at a more superficial St. Louis on the Air Host Don Marsh level. The joke in television is that reporters have acres of knowledge that is only an inch deep. TV reporters, as they come to work, generally do not know where they will be in a given day. It may be at a murder scene, the governor’s office or an overnight hostage situation. It is difficult to prepare for such unknowns. With St. Louis on the Air and Mary Edwards’ skill at booking interesting guests and subject matter, it is quite a different story. Mary, with limited help from the host, has the daunting responsibility of scheduling interesting guests for the four days a week we do the program… PLUS those for Cityscape. Thanks to Mary, I have the opportunity to get ahead of each program by a day or two, or more. That offers time for the necessary research to prepare for the programs. Thank God for the Internet. We schedule many authors and reading their books can be a problem, especially when the book does not arrive until the day before the program. I try to read as many as I can. Some are better/more interesting than others and I find myself finishing many of them days after the programs. If the guest has convinced me to do that, I assume the audience reacts the same way. The adrenaline really gets going when we do programs on breaking news stories. That was the case this past summer when the July 19th storm hit and we worked with news department personnel. I wish we were able to do more breaking news this way. There’s a different energy level in such programs. Postelection programs are in much the same vein. And, the adrenaline REALLY gets going when scheduled guests are not in studio at the appointed time. Jack Klugman was en-route from KMOX at 11:06. So, we started the interview by phone as he made his way to campus, then to the studio from the parking lot. We walked him in on the air. Then there was the time John Ashcroft cancelled at the last moment. I had read his book and was looking forward to a conversation. He pulled out, and UMSL political science professor Dave Robertson was a last minute stand-in for what, I think, was one of our better programs. The University is a great resource for us. All in all, the opportunity to do this program is, from a personal perspective, rewarding in many ways. It is my hope that it is for the listeners too and that it enables the audience to take advantage of KWMU’s gift to the community: greater knowledge and a deeper level of understanding. — Don Marsh St. Louis on the Air Host KWMU REVENUE & EXPENSes R e v e nu e Friends of KWMU Exp endit ures $ 1,647,478 34% Program Services: Underwriting Income / Other Grants 900,399 19% Programming and Production Corporation for Public Broadcasting 388,851 8% Broadcasting 272,831 6% Program Information 337,775 8% Special Events & Other Operating Revenue 99,948 2% Investment Income & Interest Expense 44,538 1% UM–St. Louis Direct Support 493,381 10% UM–St. Louis Donated Facilities & Indirect Support 479,578 10% In-Kind Non-operating Revenue 129,781 3% Capital Gifts and Grants Total Revenues 627,983 13% $ 4,811,879 100% $ 1,503,858 35% Supporting Services: Administration Fund Raising 747,382 17% Depreciation Expense 35,819 1% Total Expenses Net Revenues Over (Under) Expenditures 1,435,403 33% $ 4,333,068 $ 478,829 CORNERSTONE SOCIETY MEMBERS KWMU salutes the generous members of the KWMU Cornerstone Society who gave their support in 2005-06.
