Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. This great Island based charity

News from Councillor Rodney Downer,
Councillor for Godshill and Wroxall.
I am pleased to report that the path up to Godshill Church from Church
Hill has been taken over by Island Roads. Potholes have been filled in
and it is likely that the railings will be renewed.
Residents in Newport Road have been speaking about speeding traffic
and I have contacted the police about this. After a meeting with Island
Roads the kerb stones have been painted black and white to try to stop
vehicles running over the kerb at the junction of West Street and School
Road.
I was pleased to attend both the Godshill Village Fair and Wroxall School
Fair. I also had a meeting with the headteacher at Godshill School.
I have received positive comments about the works on the old Shanklin
to Wroxall railway line. The top dressing has been applied and a
considerable number of people are using it.
I arranged a meeting for Wroxall Parish Council members with council
officers about various matters including the fence between the Wroxall
allotments and the cemetery.
There has been an incident of fly tipping which I have reported.

The annual Shanklin Regatta features a programme of carnival events,
including the ‘here to here’ swim, rowing, sailing events and of course
the spectacular firework night that will be held near to the newly
reinstalled flagpole on Shanklin Esplanade. The carnival processions will
be held on the 6th and 9th of August.
These annual celebrations are being held alongside the 150th anniversary
of the opening of Shanklin Railway Station. There will be a programme
of events all along the line, including a special event at Shanklin on
Saturday August 30th. There is also a rededication of the War Memorial
to coincide with the 100th commemoration of the start of World
War One as part of the Shanklin’s recognition of the sacrifice made by
individuals and the community.
It is thanks to volunteers that these and countless other events can
happen. The Town Council offers help to fund events and more details
can be found at Shanklin’s Community Library, Tourist Information Point,
and on the visitwight website.
The Town Council are also planning another public meeting in the
autumn to outline plans for 2015 onwards, when funding pressures and
services will be discussed.
Shanklin Town Beach Regatta.
The Regatta takes place on the 14th August and will see the crowds take
to the beach, pier and esplanade for the day.
The day starts with the sandcastle competition at 10am on the beach
opposite the crazy golf. There is also lunchtime entertainment on the
pier apron including an artist competition, a bottle tombola stall and a
children’s magician. All swimming events start at 2pm and are open to
all ages, including adults. The sports shore start at 1.30pm on the beach
opposite the cliff lift. The flat races include the classic egg and spoon and
sack races.
The rescue helicopter from Lee on the Solent, Sandown and Shanklin
inshore lifeboat will be demonstrating a sea rescue at about 3pm. The
Shanklin regatta ‘Queen Bathing Beauty’ competition takes place in the
afternoon with 1st prize being £150, 2nd £75 and 3rd £50. All entrants
receive a prize and this competition is open to residents and visitors.
The evening entertainment kicks off at 7pm on the seafront and pier
apron, with a grand firework display the culmination of the day’s events.
The Shanklin Town Beach Regatta is free so come and join them for a
great day!

Giant Ammonite goes on display at Dinosaur Isle Museum.
A 100 million year old fossil recently found near Sandown Beach that
weighs in at over 110 kilos has now gone on display at Dinosaur Isle
Museum.
Alex added, "It is very pleasing my find has been able to go on display
at Dinosaur Isle Museum for all to enjoy. It just shows you never know
when you may find something and it further reinforces the Isle of Wight's
reputation as one of the world's best locations to find fossils."
A large ammonite, which is also a complete specimen, was discovered
near a cliff face by staff member Alex Peaker during a fossil walk. The
ammonite, identified as Austiniceras austeni, belongs to a group of
ammonites known as Parapuzosia which are acknowledged to be the
largest ammonites in the world.
Alex said, “I was walking past some debris that had recently fallen from
the cliff on a fossil hunting walk when I spotted the round characteristic
shape of an ammonite. At first I didn’t want to get my hopes up as
shapes can be misleading, however I took a closer look and saw the
distinctive lines of an ammonite shell.
“Because it was below the cliff face, we sought permission to remove it
from National Trust which is the landowner. It is lucky I spotted it when
I did because it could have been washed away and lost to science.”
Collecting the ammonite was a difficult task, with the fossil part
of a large block of rock weighing in at around two hundred kilos.
Undeterred, it took three members of staff eight hours to remove
enough of the surrounding rock to lift the ammonite. It was then
transported using a beach buggy that has large inflatable tyres capable of
carrying heavy weights over soft sand back to the museum.
Since March, the ammonite has been worked on in the lab at Dinosaur
Isle by Martin New who has carefully removed the remaining rock from
the shell and given it a clean, finally revealing the fossil in its full complete
form.

Isle of Wight Shakespeare Festival to be held at
East Dene, Bonchurch.
This year marks the beginning of a brand new event for the Island’s theatre
calendar: the Isle of Wight Shakespeare Festival, hosted by the Isle of Wight
Shakespeare Company.
Fresh from their sell-out debut run of Much Ado About Nothing, this
innovative new company are looking to bring the buzz back to Shakespeare
at this, their first festival, taking place on Wednesday, August 27, and Thursday,
August 28, at East Dene, Bonchurch.
18 Island Young Carers Celebrate in Festival Style!
YMCA Young Carers travelled across the sea with 18 young people to head
to YMCA Fairthorne Manor, in Hampshire for the Annual Young Carers
Festival.
Created in 2000 in partnership with YMCA Fairthorne and The Children’s
Society, the festival gives young people the chance to have fun away from
their caring role, it raises awareness of this often hidden group of young
people whilst ensures they access opportunities to share experiences with
other Young Carers.
Steve Baker, YMCA Young Carers Service Manager said,
The festival will host an array of events, including performance workshops, the
Midsummer Market, a journey through the sonnets with Elizabethans in Love
and a production of Twelfth Night by mainland company Oddbox.
“The Young Carers Festival (YCF) is an exclusive event for Britain’s youngest
carers. Those who attend have a variety of caring responsibilities, due to
supporting family members which have a debilitating illness, condition or
disability.”
Headlining the event is the IWSC’s production of A Midsummer Night’s
Dream, playing on both days of the festival. Set in the beautiful and
atmospheric grounds of East Dene, Bonchurch, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
will transport audiences to the fantastical, beautiful and often sinister world of
the Faerie Kingdom. Reality will be turned upside down with an infusion of
passion, comedy and magic; so sit back and relax as a cast of outstanding Island
talents take on one of Shakespeare’s most popular works.
“I would like to say a huge thank you to those who donated to YMCA Young
Carers as these donations enabled these incredible young people to attend
this year’s festival. We certainly value and rely on the kind support of the
community, from those who volunteer directly with us to those who add a
few quid to the respite activity pot.”
As a grand finale, the IWSC is hosting The Grand Faerie Ball, in aid of
Parkinson’s UK, on August 28th. An evening of music, costume and food,
complete with a faerie photo-booth and entertainment from our players,
this is sure to be a fantastic event. So come and dance the night away in
a ballroom fit for any courtier of Faerieland, all whilst raising funds and
awareness for an incredible cause.

Residents will be pleased to know that the flagpole on the esplanade
is now up with the union flag flying in its rightful place. Together with
Louis Attrill Olympic gold medallist, who started his career at Shanklin
rowing club and Anne Springman MBE from Shanklin Chine, we had a
small flag raising ceremony as part of the many D Day Projects going on
in Shanklin.
A lovely afternoon was had by all who attended, with the wonderful
backdrop of the Round the Island Yacht Race in the distance. Many
thanks go to the rowing club for putting on some very welcomed
refreshments.

Island beaches are like a sampler for the rest of Britain. With such
a wide variety to choose from they are certainly one of reasons
so many people flock to our shores each summer. Of course
it isn’t just visitors who enjoy our beaches; Islanders too enjoy
their leisure time on the golden sands, pebbles, rocky outcrops
and river estuaries. It’s vital we maintain the cleanliness of these
beaches that we are so fortunate to have.
Last month I took part in a beach clean at the bay near St.
Catherine’s Lighthouse. It was organised by the Isle of Wight
Long Distance Walkers Association and Isle of Wight Beach
Cleaning volunteers. It was good to see two local groups
working together to help keep our beauty spots clean and
safe for everyone to use. We followed the hard work with a
barbeque – the sausages were delicious!
It was rewarding to be part of such a strong, community led
effort to clean up the beaches - in total we collected 18 large
bags of litter. Good quality, rubbish free beaches are vital to the
Island as a tourist destination. Nature has given us a beautiful
blank canvas – sadly mankind is despoiling it; but all Islanders
can help just by taking home all their rubbish after a day on the
beach.

SBA students perform mas fusion
Cheering on Gatten and Lake
The Baylink Olympics recently took
place at Sandown Bay Academy
and was open to all children in
years 3-6 in their partner primary
schools. The two day event was
run by the school staff and student
council and gave students from
local primary schools the chance to
try out new sports and activities.
Day one of the event saw over
1000 students take part in a variety
of sports. It was one of the largest
student-led events in the country
and included athletics, cycling,
netball, basketball, tag rugby and
kwik cricket. Day two of the
event the children spent the day
doing cross-curricular activities in
technology, languages, performing
arts and PE.
An abandoned boat has been
up-cycled by a group of Cowes
Enterprise College students who
spent several mornings at UKSA
learning valuable boat maintenance
skills.
The boat was donated to UKSA by
Yarmouth Harbour Commission’s
berthing master Dante Russell.
At UKSA the boat became a longterm project for four students on
the Youth Engagement for Schools
(YES) programme, which aims to
prevent students from dropping out
of statutory education by providing
active learning opportunities in
small groups, outside their normal
learning environment.

13, attended UKSA once a week
to work with boat builder Gareth
Ely to learn hard skills such as using
tools, restoring paintwork and
getting the boat safely afloat again.
They tested the boat out by
launching it on the River Medina,
then once satisfied with their work
they presented it to the Traveller’s
Joy public house in Northwood,
where landlord Ashley Pamphilon
plans to use it as a feature in the
children’s play area.

The Isle of Wight Radio Local Hero Awards took place recently
at the Cowes Yacht Haven. The annual event is only made
possible by the generosity of the sponsors and all of the
deserving winners. Special thanks also go to main sponsor
Wightfibre whose support enabled the event to be such a
resounding success.
An inspirational and pioneering Isle of Wight based doctor was named
Overall Local Hero at the glittering award ceremony. Ramesh Babu’s
“outstanding professionalism with amazing results” was honoured at the
event. Guests heard how Mr Babu is making a huge difference to the
lives of people battling breast cancer.
The Associate Specialist Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital Isle of Wight NHS
Trust has pioneered a new technique using radio isotope injections and
nearly 300 women have already used the new technique. Receiving his
award before the big night, Ramesh Babu said,
“It feels brilliant. I never realised that I was going to be a local hero. It’s
a very nice way of recognising people on the Isle of Wight. I’d like to take
this opportunity to congratulate the other winners as well. It’s a very good
feeling.”
Mr Babu led a group of incredibly deserving Islanders, all of whom
are unsung local heroes. The awards are a chance to say thank you to
Islanders who inspire others and this year winners also included children,
a charity fundraiser and a leading figure in Isle of Wight youth sport.

Finlay Morris won the Act of Bravery award, sponsored by Yokogawa
Marex Ltd. Diagnosed with Acute Lympho Blastic Leukaemia, coupled
with a rare tissue type that made making a life-saving match for him
extremely difficult, Finlay Morris has inspired over 4,600 people to
join the bone marrow register, through Delete Blood Cancer. Lifesaving matches have already been made between Islanders and other
registered patients. Finlay has since undergone a transplant and has just
celebrated his 7th birthday.
Finlay’s dad Jason Morris said,
“[It was] very emotional to be up there to receive this award. The whole
year has gone so fast. Finlay’s been absolutely brilliant throughout. Not at
any one single point has he complained. If he doesn’t complain we can’t
complain either. ”

brain tumour and won the Asa Singleton Courageous Child Award,

and Armour at Roman Villa
Warriors of the Ancient World: Epic Movie
Arms and Armour is a visually stunning,
touring exhibition of props and costumes
used in epic historical blockbuster movies.
The exhibition includes a selection of full
warrior costumes and armour containing
‘screen used’ props from some of the
biggest sword and sandal epic films of recent
years, including Gladiator; Troy; Alexander;
Centurion; The Eagle; King Arthur and
the hit TV series Spartacus. All the movie
armour and costumes are historically based
with many representing highly accurate
reconstructions of warrior equipment and
weapons from the ancient world.
This unique exhibition also offers a range
of interactive replica handling armour and
movie props for you to experience, ranging
from a gladiator’s helmet to a hoplite’s
shield from Alexander (2004). You too can
get a taste of what it would have been like
to put on armour and handle weapons
from the ancient world.
The exhibition is a joint production between
Pop-Up Exhibitions Ltd and Brading Roman
Villa, and has not been on display in this form
in the UK before.

winning Gladiator (2000) displayed with the
interior hangings from General Maximus’

Sarmatian armour used in the climactic battle

legendary screen armour Terry English who
also worked on Excalibur (1981) and Aliens
(1986). For the first time in the UK you will
be able to see the armour and costume of
Spartacus worn by Liam McIntyre from the
Starz series Spartacus Vengeance (2012).

Royal Children at Osborne
This August at Osborne, set out with your family on a Small Adventure
for Royal Children. Every day there’s traditional Victorian fun for kids (and
mums and dads!) with a programme of activities taking place on Queen
Victoria’s private beach and at the newly conserved Swiss Cottage.
Join endearing and enduring Victorian favourite Mr Punch and his wife Judy
for mischief and amusement, let your little soldiers run off some energy in
the rifle drills and hobby horse relays, then take a dip in the Solent and enjoy
a game of quoits or skittles with a delicious ice cream from the café. Later

INGREDIENTS
Serves 4
Salad
Dressing
2 medium fennel bulbs
4 eggs
250g broad beans
250g peas
Olive oil – to drizzle
8 slices Parma ham
1 crushed garlic clove
1 teaspoon sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon wholegrain mustard
3 tablespoon olive oil
Dill
Sea salt and pepper
Method
Cut fennel in half and slice as thinly as possible, place in ice water to
crisp up (approx. 10 -15 minutes)
Place eggs in simmering water for approximately 8 - 9 minutes (yolks
set, but soft)
Blanch broad beans for 1 minute and add peas, and cook for further 3
minutes until tender
Drain and refresh with cold water
Whisk together all dressing ingredients – season to taste
Add broad beans and peas to the drained fennel
Pour over dressing and toss well, shell eggs and cut into quarters
Heat olive oil, fry Parma ham until golden brown and crisp – turning
once
Sprinkle Parma ham over salad, season with salt and pepper.

Waste Not, Want Not
Do you have thousands of pounds to waste? If not, you
may just wish to read on, as potentially, failure to do so
could be costly. Have you ever considered the use of
a trust? Contrary to common understanding, trusts are
not something ‘only for the rich’ or ‘a complicated legal
arrangement that is best to be avoided’.
So what is a trust?
A trust is a legal means of protecting
your assets. Essentially it separates the
legal and moral ownership of an asset.
For example, if I were to give £5 to a
friend and say ‘this is yours’ then my
friend would own the fiver – legally and
morally. There is no trust. However,
if I were to give £5 to a friend and say
‘could you please go and buy me some
chocolate with this’ then I would be
creating a trust. Although legally my
friend would have the fiver, morally my
friend would owe me some chocolate.
My friend would be the ‘trustee’, I
would be the ‘beneficiary’, the ‘trust
fund’ would be the fiver and the ‘terms
of the trust’ would be to use the fiver
to buy me chocolate. These are the key
elements of a trust and by varying them,
different situations can be addressed.
How could a trust help
me or my family?
The separation of the legal and moral
ownership of an asset allows assets to
be protected. The following are just a
few simple examples:• If you are married and have not
made a will (or have made a simple will
leaving everything to your husband or
wife) then they will inherit everything
from you when you die. That may be
what you want but what will happen
if the survivor has to go into care?
Everything can be taken to pay for your
care. If instead you use trusts in your
will you can protect your respective
estate from care fees.

• Similarly you can use trusts in wills
in the case of second marriages to
avoid step-children from getting all and
therefore leaving nothing for your own
children.
• If you have a disabled child or children
on benefits they may lose valuable
benefits when receiving an inheritance
from you. A trust would allow you to
provide for your children without the
risk of loss of benefits for them.
• If you have life policies or death in
service pension benefits you could lose
40% of their value on your death if you
don’t protect them with an appropriate
trust.
• If you have suffered an injury for
which you are getting compensation,
the receipt of the compensation will
mean that you will lose entitlement
to most benefits. This can be costly.
Special trusts can be used to protect
your compensation without loss of
means-tested benefits.
• You may own rental property with
a husband/ wife. If one of you earns
significantly more than the other you
will likely pay unnecessary tax. This can
be avoided by a declaration of trust to
record an unequal ownership of the
asset (and consquently the income).
There are many more uses for trusts
including the potential of saving
thousands of pounds of inheritance
tax.

Bike Stays Safe
This Summer
Did you know that the value of bikes stolen
each year exceeds the value of property stolen
from people in house burglaries? Bicycles
are expensive nowadays and having one
stolen is not only costly but also extremely
inconvenient. At this time of year, the ‘fair
weather’ cyclists are also all out and about and
so there is an even better selection of bikes
for the would-be thieves to choose from.
Without a doubt, your chance of keeping possession of your
valued bicycle is to buy a quality lock for it AND REMEMBER
TO USE IT! It is advisable to position the lock to include as much
of the frame and other parts as possible. With most locks, the
frame and at least one wheel can be protected. Any accessories
such as lights, pump, water-bottles should be removed wherever
possible when your bike is parked otherwise the chances of still
owning them when you return to collect your bike is serious
reduced.
Many cycles are stolen when owners leave them against shop
windows. They are only ‘nipping into the store for a few seconds’
and believe that they can ‘keep on eye’ on their bike so they
don’t bother with a lock. Thieves know this too, and are happy
to help themselves.
Other vulnerable bikes are those that are left on roof or boot
racks on vehicles. These are very popular nowadays and when
these vehicles are left unattended in car parks, or when waiting
for ferries, they can be targeted by thieves for a very quick and
easy steal.
Please have your bike security marked, or get your postcode
stamped on the frame. Hundreds of bikes are recovered by the
Police each year but many are never traced back to their rightful
owners. Make a note of your bike’s details and vital statistics,
so that should the worst happen, you may get to see your bike
again.
