FROM THE SR. WARDEN ___ __SEPTEMBER 2014
In the 1990's, a phrase - actually, an abbreviation of a phrase - emerged. The
abbreviation spread like wildfire throughout Christianity, particularly across youth
groups and young adult programs. Though its origins date back more than 100 years,
this acronym really gained mainstream popularity approximately twenty years ago with the help of brightly colored, woven bracelets that bore the abbreviation in white:
WWJD? What would Jesus do? Unfortunately, the phrase became almost too
popular. Spoofs and parodies of the expression soon became more popular than the
expression itself, and the craze began to dwindle. And that's too bad.
As we enter this next phase of our transition together, we will undoubtedly be met
with a great deal of change. We got a taste of it this summer, and many found it to
be refreshing. Change can be difficult, though; it can be uncomfortable. It is a
challenge. And, in the face of change and challenges, it can be tempting to dig our
heels in; to resist newness; to cling to what is familiar. That is a natural and very
human reaction! But, understanding that with change comes great opportunity, we
must push ourselves - TOGETHER - to embrace all that lies ahead.
When it comes to change, what would Jesus do? What did Jesus do? Jesus certainly
dealt with change and with difficulties; he certainly faced challenges. And, while I'm
sure this is overly reductive, what always comes to mind, for me, is that he prayed.
Sure, it sounds simple, but when it comes to dealing with life's difficulties, "pray
first; act later" is far easier said than done. It's a challenge that I've not only issued
to myself, but that I feel Jesus issued - and issues - to all of us, as well.
As I mentioned, it's a shame that the "WWJD" craze died down. "What would Jesus
do?" It's a great question, and it's especially applicable to all of us now.
There are exciting times ahead.
There are amazing opportunities ahead.
There is fun, there is hard work,
and, yes, there is change ahead.
What would Jesus do?
What will YOU do?
Catherine L. Bevard
FATHER FLEMING introduces himself……
I’m Jack Fleming, your new Interim Rector. I’ve just finished my interim work at
St. Mary’s, Crystal Lake; before that I was the Rector for 13 years at St. Timothy’s,
Creve Coeur in the Diocese of Missouri. Spouse Tricia, son Sean and black Lab,
Sophia comprise our basic family unit, with extended family scattered across the
planet from Kuala Lumpur to Killarney, San Francisco to NYC. Tricia is an RN
specializing in Integrative Health Coaching (she also holds dual Irish-American
citizenship); Sean is a middle school teacher in suburban St. Louis. Our home is in
Kirkwood, close to St. Louis.
I was for many years a Roman Catholic priest (Vatican II), working in education as
an inner city high school principal, then Vice-President and Dean at Fontbonne
University in St. Louis. After a period of discernment and decisions,, I was received
as an Episcopal priest by Missouri Bishop Hays Rockwell. Shortly thereafter I
accepted the position of Rector of St. Timothy’s. After two capital campaigns, a
new church and community center, significant membership increase and extensive
engagement in outreach ministries, I retired as required by church canons.
Having been trained and certified as an Interim, I was pleased to join the Diocese of
Chicago and serve as Interim Rector at St. Mary’s, Crystal Lake and look forward
to our year together in mutual ministry.
I have a strong vision of the Episcopal Church taking again a leadership role in the
religious and civic affairs of the communities we serve and am optimistic about that;
I have a deep commitment to Outreach as a core value of a thriving Eucharistic
church; adult and children’s spiritual formation is critical to a healthy and vibrant
church. Liturgy…worship…the Eucharist is at the heart of my own spiritual
journey, along with an abiding interest in Celtic spirituality, both as a font of spiritual
wisdom and as a model for evangelization and community building. I was fortunate
during my transition into the Episcopal Church to have studied at Oxford with
Rowan William, N.T Wright, John MacQuarrie and other stellar Anglican
theologians; I was also in an Anglican Studies program at the University of the South
(Sewanee). I have served in many diocesan capacities, chaired the Missouri
Deputation at General convention in Columbus and was Deputy in Anaheim.
I am honored to join you in your good work and look forward to our faithful
partnership, seeking to make all things new in God’s Spirit and bringing the Good
News of Jesus Christ into clear and sharp focus in our time and in our communities.
Grace and Peace!
Jack+
WE CAN’T SAY THIS ENOUGH…….
PLEASE MAKE WEARING YOUR NAMETAG A HABIT!
Make it a habit to wear your nametag! We need to help Fr. Jack learn our names as
well as getting to know each other.
If you see someone with a GREEN nametag they are still
pretty new….Introduce yourself!
If you don't have a nametag or have lost yours, simply let us know
by signing up on the sheet on the higher table in the gathering
space and you will have a new one waiting for you the next week.
In the meantime…..STICK ONE ON.
Our Search Committee members have WHITE ONES!
St. Andrew’s Parishioners……
Ready or not here it comes!
Have you ever wondered….
How can I be a part of the future of St. Andrew’s?
Well, here is your opportunity…
The Search Committee needs your help! We will be conducting
a Congregational Assessment Tool aka CAT. This will allow
you to give your opinion on what you like, don’t like, needs
improving, does not need improving and so on and so forth
regarding our Church life here at St. Andrew’s.
You will be receiving a letter in the mail regarding this very
important survey the week before CHURCHFEST (September
8th – 13th). If you have not received the letter during that
timeframe and wish to participate, please let the office know so
that we can send you the information.
The kick off date to start the CAT will be Sunday, September 14th. There will
be a two week window to complete the survey online or in paper format. Your
opinion is extremely important to the search committee as we move forward this
year in our search for our new Rector.
Any questions regarding this matter please contact Steve DePeder or any member of
the Search Committee.
CHOOSE CHRIST
About 20 months ago I was asked to chair the Stewardship committee. Not sure
why, but maybe because I’ve been at St. Andrew’s for some time and have been
fortunate to have worked with many fellow parishioners in raising money for special
projects.
At the risk of revealing personal history, I believe Noreen and I have been blessed
because of our commitment to give back to God His share. I have a daughter who,
because of an illness about 5 years ago, was wheelchair bound! We have never
prayed so much and at times I was angry with my God because I thought He was not
listening. Well, for the last 2 years she is now walking to some degree. Was it a
miracle? In my heart I believe it was. So how could I refuse not helping the
stewardship of St. Andrew’s?
Last year I was elated that 43 families increased their pledge…hopefully all the
Crosscurrent articles and bookmarks made some impact.
As 2014 started, we began to question how we would find the right message to
continue the results of 2013. And when we were without a Rector, I thought, “God
please give us the grace to do your work.” And again, God was listening…He sent
Fr. Sam!
About 2 weeks after Fr. Sam arrived, he and I spoke about Stewardship. He asked
why we were not preaching about it from the pulpit. My response was that it’s not
September! So on Sunday, July 13th Fr. Sam preached about Stewardship. There
is no better way to find the right words than to listen to Fr. Sam’s sermon from July
13th. Hear his words about tithing, the difference between needs and wants, how
God wants us to be sowers, so that someday we can stand before God and hear Him
say “Well done good and faithful servant!” Check our website to hear the recording.
http://www.saintandrewschurch.net
Sunday, September 21 starts the official Stewardship drive, and on the 22nd you will
be sent your pledge information. I use Fr. Sam’s closing words from the sermon.
“Stewardship is not about money. Stewardship is about remembering who you
are, and whose you are. It is about remembering your relationship with
almighty God and with your neighbor and yourself. Stewardship is a way of
life. It’s spirituality. Let those with ears listen. Listen. Trust God with all
your heart”.

Chose Christ... He’s already chosen YOU!
WORSHIP AND STUDY
OPPORTUNITIES
LECTOR SIGNUP
Sign up in the Gathering Space to read the First Reading at either 8 AM or 10 AM
through the 4th Sunday of Advent, December 21st.
You now have the opportunity to SEE and READ the lesson before
you sign up to be a lector. There is a binder in the gathering space
which includes the lesson inserts by date. Once you sign up you
may take the lesson insert out of the sleeve.
ADULT FORUM– “WALKING WITH ST. FRANCIS”
Adult forum will begin on Sunday, September 21 with a six week
series called “Walking with St. Francis” Using essential ideas from
his writings, each session will highlight ways to bring simplicity and
spirituality into our daily lives. Each session will be independent of
the others to allow individuals to come even if they have not attended
earlier sessions – ALL ARE WELCOME.
AN USHER INVITATION…..
Will you consider joining the Usher team?
Additional members are needed and welcomed. The ushers are often the first
people that parishioners and guests meet on Sunday morning, so if you enjoy
greeting and talking with people, this is a role for you!
The ushers serve at both the 8:00 am and 10:00am
Eucharists on Sunday morning as well as for special
services throughout the church year (e.g. Thanksgiving,
Christmas Eve, Holy Week, Easter). Besides greeting
parishioners, other duties include disseminating bulletins,
collecting the offering, guiding people to the communion
rail, service attendance count and general clean-up
(bulletins, etc.) from the pews after the service.
If you'd like to become an usher or would like more information, please contact Gary
Nazzarini, Head Usher, at (c) 630-418-5642 or (h) 630-369-8350 or, look for the
Usher table at Churchfest! We look forward to having you join us.
DAUGHTERS OF THE KING
We need your prayers!
“Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and
earth, hear our prayers for this parish family. Strengthen the
faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us
all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be
of one heart and mind within your Holy Church; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen”
Praying is the most important thing you can do to support the
Search Committee and the parish as a whole during our process of
seeking and calling a new Rector. Please join the Daughters of
the King for a PRAYER VIGIL after Churchfest on Sunday,
September 14. Similar to the “Watch” on Maundy Thursday
night during Lent, sign up in the Gathering Space for a short timeslot in the Chapel between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Daughters of the King is a lay order of women who live by a daily commitment to
prayer, service, and the spreading of God’s word. Parishioners can fill out prayer
request pew cards or submit requests to Ellen Spitalli her via e-mail,
[email protected], or by phone at (630)
Our next meeting will be on Sunday, September 21 at 9:00 a.m. in Room #4 at the
end of the hallway from the Gathering Space.
Your St. Marie Chapter is:
Donna Armstrong, Kim Bryze, Rolle Burgeson, Barb Chrobak,
Mary Louise Corn, Pattie DePeder, Mary Jane Haley, Sally Hedrick,
Gail Lupia, JoAnn Matejczyk, Laura Quené, Kate Reynolds,
Ellen Spitalli, Dianne Velazquez, Gay Webb, Amy Wiesner,
Mary Ann Wiesner, and Jean Young.
WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY
Women’s Bible Study will begin on Thursday, September 18 at
9:30 a.m. in Room #4 next to the Nursery. We are beginning a
study of the Acts of the Apostles and WELCOME all interested
women to join us
Music Notes
Parish Choir Resumes:
Time to warm up the vocal chords and get those
dust bunnies out! Parish Choir rehearsals will resume Wednesday, September 10,
2014 at 7:30 p.m. in the Church. The program year will begin CHURCHFEST
Sunday, September 14, 2014 – one service at 9:00 am. See you there!
The Parish Choir is in Need – of your Voice, that is!!!
Do you enjoy singing? If you have ever considered joining the Parish Choir, won't
you do so now?
Between travel and work schedules, our ranks fluctuate widely and more singers are
needed to keep our “joyful noise” strong. We need all voice parts – ladies and
gentlemen equally! If you are high school age on up, don’t be shy! You are all
welcome. It’s a ministry that touches heart and soul (and a few funny bones along
the way).
Requirements? The only prerequisite is that you be able to carry a tune and like to
enjoy yourself (OK, two prerequisites!). We have a good time working hard!
We sing for the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist on Sunday as well as for special
services throughout the church year (e.g. Thanksgiving, Christmas
Eve, Holy Week, Easter). Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at
7:30 p.m. in the Church. If you have questions or need more
information, please contact Kathy Nazzarini, Director of Music (h630-369-8350 or c-630-234-5126), or better yet, look for the Parish
Choir booth at Churchfest.
Come try it out! As we were challenged by Fr. Sam this summer -- Could this be
your "small thing" to do in service of the Lord?
Many, Many Thanks to each of you who offered your time and talents
throughout the summer to provide music for the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist. All were
wonderfully received and very much appreciated! Thank you to Donna Armstrong,
Catherine Bevard, Deni Cantrall, Carlotta Conley, Jim Hoover, Anna Lenhardt,
Joseph Myers, Kathy Nazzarini, Madonna Pence, Reed Pence, Glenn Spitler, Katie
Spitler, and, Gary Robbins and the brass ensemble.
ST. ANDREW’S YOUTH CHOIR
It's time to start singing again in the St. Andrew's Youth Choir.
Our first rehearsal will be on Sunday, September 22, in the Youth
Choir room. All children in first grade and above are invited to
sing in the choir. We will again be singing in Church at the 10:00
a.m. service and at other special times throughout the year.
Look for me at the choir sign up table at CHURCHFEST on September 14, for more
information about our rehearsals and activities, or call me at 630-985-0895 if you
have any questions. I’ve selected some wonderful music, and I look forward to
singing these anthems with our wonderful Youth Choir. If you are a returning choir
member, please try on your choir shirt to make sure if still fits. If you need a different
size, please be sure to let me know.
Best to all,
Chris Stansbury

HOLY BAPTISM
Holy Baptism is administered on designated Sundays during the service. Holy
Baptism is especially appropriate at the Easter Vigil, on the Day of Pentecost,
on All Saints' Day (or the Sunday after), the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord
(the first Sunday after Epiphany) and the Bishop's visitation when one is
scheduled.
THE SUNDAY AFTER ALL SAINTS’ DAY
Sunday, November 2, 2014 - 8:00 A.M. or 10:00 A.M.
THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY:
THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD
Sunday, January 11, 2015 - 8:00 A.M. or 10:00 A.M.
Godparents must be baptized Christians. It is recommended that they be either a
confirmed member of this parish or active in their own parish. Please call the
Parish Office to arrange for the Baptism and to schedule pre-baptismal
instruction.
ALTAR GUILD: Did you know??
 The work of the Altar Guild is supported through the generosity of altar
flower thank offerings and memorials given throughout the year as well as
through other designated special gifts.
 These contributions are used to purchase communion wine and wafers,
candles and oil, and linens, not just the weekly flowers. In addition, the
special flowers and palms and other decorations that adorn our worship space
for Christmas, Palm Sunday and Easter services are enabled through these
contributions.
 Designated special gifts make possible the purchase of such items as altar
hangings and linens, vestments and communion vessels.
 The Altar Guild spends $45 each week on flowers alone. Weekly costs for
the wine, candles and oil, etc. are in addition to that.
Won't you please consider a flower memorial or gift to help the Altar Guild continue
to provide all of these elements for our worship together?
The 2014 & 2015 flower charts are on the table in the
Gathering Space for specific Sundays if you wish the
flowers in the Sanctuary to be offered through your
contribution. A suggested guideline is $50. Checks
should be made payable to Saint Andrew's, placed in a
"pew envelope" with the memorial or thank offering
designation clearly marked. More than one person or
family can designate a memorial or thankoffering for any
given week.
Questions? Call Kathy Nazzarini or Karin Anderson, Altar Guild Directresses.
CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER AND LECTIO DIVINA
Parishioners of St. Andrews will have an opportunity to experience Contemplative
Prayer and Lectio Divina at the Matejczyk home at nine o’clock Saturday morning,
September 20.
Contemplative prayer leads us into a place within ourselves,
God’s Dwelling Place, of an ever-deepening, growing sense of
Holy Presence. Lectio Divina is a way of reading Scripture
slowly and repetitively, allowing the words to sink into our
hearts and minds so that the passage stays with us. When we
hear the words again we might think – that’s mine! I know
those words!
Our minds were given to us for a purpose. Too often we use our minds off-kilter,
off-center, off –purpose and we waste the most powerful gift we have been given –
our hearts and our minds – with worry, anxiety, resentment, guilt. Centering Prayer
and Lectio Divina give us an opportunity to continue to free ourselves from negative
thinking.
In our world of ever-increasing turmoil, this is an opportunity to come
away for refreshing energy. We remember Jesus’ words to his disciples
in the year of our Lord 0028 or so and still to us today:
“Come apart and rest a while.”
The group will meet at the Matejczyk home, 1539 Chicago Ave., Downers Grove.
at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20. All are welcome.
Please call Jo Ann (630-852-7107) to let her know you will be there.
NEW COFFEE HOST SIGNUP

DuPage P.A.D.S. 2014
Thanks!
Our third summer helping St. Barnabas with staffing and meals for
one of their PADS hosting on August 12 & 13 was again a success.
Thanks to all for your support!
With the generous donation of time and treasure, and our collective
effort, we were able to provide hot meals for both evening and
morning, a sack lunch for guests to take away to help get through
the next day, as well as security through the night.
…and more to come!
This year, we still have three more opportunities to continue and expand our
involvement with helping those in our community who need a place to sleep and a
good meal to eat.
Tuesday and Wednesday, September 2 & 3, we will again help with PADS at St.
Barnabas. There are donations and volunteer opportunities to help with the dessert
we will provide for the evening meal and to participate in cooking and serving
breakfast before sending the guests on their way.
The signup sheet for donations and volunteers
is on the long table in the gathering space.
Also, for the first time, St. Andrew’s will help support PADS at the First United
Methodist Church in Downers Grove. We will participate in the evening and
morning staffings to help with meal preparation and serving.
Tuesday and Wednesday,
September 23 & 24 and October 28 & 29
The signup sheets for this “close to home” opportunity to again
serve the homeless in our community
will be in the gathering space in early September.
Again, A Great Big THANKS to ALL who participated in August, and will again
this fall, to make it all possible! It can’t be done without YOU!

EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN
FALL FORUM
This fall, Saturday, October 18, the
Episcopal Church Women of the
Diocese of Chicago will be hosting an
event on hunger at Emmanuel
Episcopal Church, La Grange. The
Fall Forum begins at 9:00am and
concludes at 3:00pm.
It is our belief that many people participate in food programs without really
understanding why there is such need. What does it mean to be hungry? No food at
all? Poor nutrition? Limited access to healthy food? What is being done in our state
and local governments? How are the causes of hunger different across Illinois? Are
all poor people hungry? How can a family get help? How can we help?
The ECW 2014 Fall Forum will include a panel discussion with representatives from
organizations working to eliminate hunger in our region. The Rev. Bonnie Perry, All
Saints, Chicago, will be our moderator. Following lunch, we will have small group
discussions with our panelists to cover the issues of hunger in more depth.
Our chaplain, The Rev. Peg Williams, Grace, Sterling, will lead our opening and
closing prayer services.
ST. LUCIA GUILD
St. Lucia Guild will meet at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, September 17th at St.
Andrew’s in the Parish Hall. This will be an organizational meeting for the coming
year’s activities. Please RSVP to hostess Barbara Kanzler, 630-852-1980 or Jean
Young, 630-852-7746.
.St. Lucia’s WELCOMES new members. If anyone has any questions about
the guild or it’s activities, please call Nancy Stapleton, 630-964-4494.
ECW DOLLARS
The next ECW order date for gift cards is Sunday, Sunday, September 7. Orders
may be placed on or before that date but will available the following Sunday. Cash
and carry will be available for purchase each Sunday.
ECW Dollars is a fund raising program run by the Women of St. Andrew’s. We
order cards for cash and carry at least once a month, at which date specific orders
may be placed by members of the congregation. The purchaser pays face value for
the cards, which are purchased at a discount. The discounts vary from 2% to 16%.
A list of most commonly used cards is available each Sunday at the cash and carry
table. Last year the Women of St. Andrew’s raised over $2,400 with the gift cards.
Please see Ellen Webb for more information.

Our hearts are filled with such gratefulness for all who have helped us celebrate our
50th Anniversary. Your good wishes, assorted gifts, cards, flowers, delicious
appetizers, and wine, many without identification, touched us deeply. The glorious
afternoon and evening, full of warm greetings, song, conversation, big smiles, and
loving vibes, made this such a special evening for us. Our only regret is that we did
not get to visit with everyone; however, you at St. Andrew's reached out to one
another and to our family and non-St. Andrew's friends. We have so many to thank
for their help, known and unknown.
Risking omitting someone, we offer particular thanks to our deacon, Tom Craighead,
for thoughtfully crafting the meaningful Renewal Service, and for participating
jointly with Fr. Sam Colley-Toothaker, our recent very special "supply-guy;" to
Bobbie Sieja for her party skills extraordinaire, and for holding it altogether along
with her wonderful hospitality committee who decorated and kept the food tables
supplied - Barb Chrobak (also kitchen), Gail Lupia, Joanne Schupbach, Dianne
Velazquez (also nurse), Carol Wandschneider, Jean Young, and Sally Hedrick (also
plants and gluten-free desserts); Rick Anderson for the generous loan and set-up of
his tent and tarp; Gary Robbins for loaning his 2 pop-up canopies and for putting up
all 4 canopies that included one from Randy Chatman (Bobbie's son) and another
from Bill Hedrick (Mr. Handyman); Mel Lopez (advice and loan of party supplies);
Betty Lupia (childcare); Jennifer Robbins (publicity and continuity); ECW and St.
Andrew's for the loan of tablecloths, chairs, tables, serving items, and utensils; Tom
Butler (beef tenderloins); our sons, Tom, Jr and Matt, their wives Kristin and Amy,
grandsons, Liam and Alex for ALL their help; and the debut of the now hit singing
group, Hedrick, et al - Sally, Bill, and Katie Hedrick, Noreen Lopez, Carlotta
Conley, Donna Armstrong, Glenn Spitler, and Rick Anderson (anyone else?) And
in closing, if anyone took pictures, we would love for you to share them with us so
we can make a remembrance booklet.
THANK YOU one and all, from the bottom of our hearts.
Lovingly, Connie and Tom Butler
Many thanks to the fellow members of
St. Andrew’s who were so kind to send
good wishes and the two lovely flower
arrangements during my recent medical
adventure. I have completely recovered
and hope to be back in the swing of
things very soon.
Yours,
