Blessed Trinity Choirs Spread
Christmas Spirit
On Sunday December 12th the
Blessed Trinity’s own Sister Beata along
with the Adult and Children’s Choir
held their annual Christmas Concert to
a large appreciative audience. Due to
the deluge of rain and wind, the audience was somewhat less than previous
years but the venue was rocking with
Christmas spirit.
The concert that was held in the Point
mas in Killarney” and a great version
of “Feliz Navidad”.
The three groups combined for the
finale to sing fabulous versions of “Silent Night” and “We Wish You A Merry
Christmas” among other songs.
Monsignor Curran addressed the
crowd at the end of the concert, thanking
the Choirs and Folk Group for a great
performance, everyone for attending the
Sister Mary Beata leads the children and adult choir in song.
Breeze Club House due to the ongoing
renovation of Saint Thomas More Hall
(which from reports received looks
beautiful, and should be re-opened
soon), featured Sister Mary Beata’s
Adult Choir, Childrens’ Choir and the
Saturday night Folk Group.
The assembled groups sounded
magnificent as the Adults sang some
classic songs such as “White Christmas”, “Deck The Halls”, “Do You Hear
What I Hear” along with some newer
Christmas hits such as “My Grown
Up Christmas Wish” and “Believe”
among other songs. The Children sang
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and
“Santa Claus is Coming to Town” as
well as other children’s classics.
Sister Beata stood in and sang for
Maureen McNamee of the Saturday
night folk group who unfortunately
couldn’t make the concert. The group
with Sister Mary Beata sang “Rocking

And They Still Don’t Get It!
The story is told of a young farmer who had a mule that was giving him
problems. It seems the mule had a mind of it’s own and wouldn’t do what that
farmer wanted it to do. The farmer was in a quandary as to what to do when a
wise older farmer walked up to the mule and struck him between the eyes with
a baseball bat. The young farmer looked aghast at the older farmer and said
“Why did you do that?” To which the older farmer replied “First you have to
get his attention.”
Trying to apply that principle to Congress one would have thought that the
elections this past November would have been the bat to get the attention of our
congressional representatives. Yet it appears to be business as usual – only the
other side is shortly to be in power. Here we are with less than two weeks left in
the year 2010, with unemployment at highs not seen for a very long time in this
country, with a deficit that is growing enormously larger every day and with the
citizenry of this wonderful country crying out for leadership and what happens?
Nothing! Absolutely nothing!
The bickering and backstabbing continues. The earmarks are flagrantly flying and our congressional representatives are holding up President Obama’s
tax compromise. It is the usual tit for tat small-minded representation that has
brought our country to the brink of economic despair. Some of these earmarks
need to go away permanently.
The rules of Congress need to be changed so that these petty items are not
added on to major bills that benefit the majority of the people and must be
passed. These petty items need to be carved out and voted upon based on their
own merits. But this is a wish list that will not happen because individual representatives will not have anything to show to their constituents to justify their
continued existence in Congress.
Meanwhile the President’s tax compromise continues to linger held hostage
to the earmarks concessions.
Hold On To Your Christmas Cards
(Continued from Page 1)
around January 15th, but this year once again there can be some more life
gleamed after Christmas for those greeting cards. Joe Pepe and his helpers (Grandchildren Holly Cassino and Eric and Chrystie Rasmussean)
will once again be collecting Christmas Cards for St. Jude’s Children
Hospital. Last year Joe and his fabulous helpers collected over 12,000
cards to be made into books for the sick children. This year he hopes to
accumulate over 20,000. So please help out by not throw the cards out
after Christmas. They could be used to put a smile put on the face of an
unfortunately sick child as a result of your recycling.
Joe has informed me that he will be collecting cards until February
15th at which time he will send them off to St. Jude’s where a staff of
volunteers will cut up the cards to make into books for the sick children.
What a great way to recycle these cards and do some good at the same
time! You can drop off the cards (please no photo cards) at Joe’s house
204-09 9th Avenue.

Letters To
The Editor
The following letters are the opinions of its author
and not necessarily those of the Rockaway Point News.
9/11 Health Bill
(James Zadroga 9/11 Health
and Compensation Act)
Dear Editor,
The 9/11 Health Bill was not passed
in the Senate on December 9th because
Republicans senators were concerned
about how to pay for the estimated $7
billion in benefits. However, not one
Republican senator has expressed any
concern about how to pay for tax cuts
for the wealthiest 2% of the population
which are estimated to cost several
hundred billion dollars.
The stated rationale is that tax cuts
for the wealthiest 2% will create jobs.
Where are all the jobs that were supposed to have been created by the tax
cuts in 2001 and 2003?
By the way, I still think the Rockaway Point News owes an apology to
Congressman Weiner for implying he
was responsible for the 9/11 Health bill
not being passed during the summer.
Yours truly,
Jack O’Meara
Tax Cuts
Dear Editor
It’s great to have tax cuts but do we
want to have the Chinese paying our
bills or should we pay our bills?
Joseph Mugivan
Infestation of
Self-Centeredness
Dear Editor
There’s been question as to why
there is so much trouble with SOME, not
all, of the youth in our community. It’s
directly related to two major sources…
the parents, and the officials in charge
who do their parents a favor and let
them get away without consequences.
I’ll give you a perfect example of the
parents.
Lady Range Rover thinks that it’s
perfectly fine to blast her horn early
every morning because she’s too lazy
to get out of her car, or have the young
girl beside her get out of her car to ring
the bell of the other children she picks
up for school. Her misguided sense of
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2010
entitlement prefers to wake up the rest
of the block to announce her royal arrival, to hell with the elderly, retirees,
sick, and people on different shifts that
don’t have to be up that early, or that
might have been up all night in jobs
that protect her family, and had just
gotten to sleep.
The inconvenience of her or her
passenger getting out and ringing the
other passengers bell, or have the other
children watch for her and give up a
minute of their playtime, far outweighed
the thought of being considerate of her
neighbors. She was angry and stressed
that she had to carpool because bus
service was inexcusably cut for some
of the kids, and was determined to let
everyone who had nothing to do with
the cut know it.
The next morning she arrived and
predictably blasted her horn 4 times
instead of the usual two. She thought
she’d teach me a lesson for politely
suggesting she not involve the rest of
the community in her daily chore, but
I knew what she was the minute I saw
her defiant face. She was no surprise
to me, and the lesson learned that day
wasn’t mine, it was her daughters and
the other 3 impressionable children of
other residents in the community, that
she picked up. There is an element
infesting this Point, one of self centeredness, and infringement. A wise neighbor
summed it up perfectly, people move
here because they like our way of life,
but they bring their old neighborhood
mentality with them, trying to destroy
it. They are rude, noisy, and infringing.
Being considerate of ones neighbors or
Christmas Spirit never entered Lady
Rover’s mind, nor will it enter the minds
of the 4 impressionable young children
that she just taught the lesson to.
Sincerely,

WHISPERING BREEZES
“Heard around town that…”
Though Christmas is still one week
away, we want to wish everyone a
Merry Christmas and a healthy and
happy New Year. My how this year
has flown. Thank you for reading this
column each week, it certainly has been
my pleasure to report on all the goings
on in the neighborhood and I hope you
enjoyed reading it.
So one week to go before the official start of winter, but extremely
cold temperatures are already rampant
throughout the country. Heard from
the Florida contingent that it has been
colder down there than here at times this
past week. With the cold temperatures
here it is time once again to check in on
our elderly neighbors, many of whom
don’t travel out when the thermometer
drops. Check in with them, ask them
if they need anything from the store or
whatever, it will make you and them
feel better.
This past weekend there was a
tragedy on the Main Road as Mrs.
Anne Reilly was hit by a car while
crossing the street, eventually dying
from the injuries sustained. Though
the Pointer usually doesn’t cover bad
news such as this (we’ll leave it to our
friends in Rockaway that will no doubt
put it on the their cover) it does bear
mentioning, not for the sensational
aspect but as a precautionary statement. This accident, the second death
on the road in recent memory is in
this writer’s opinion two too many.
Although speed was not the problem
in this case, please slow down on the
road, and be aware of pedestrians, bicyclists and animals, the few seconds
that you save by speeding down the
road, or not stopping for pedestrians
in the crosswalk is not worth any life.
We in the Cooperative need to be more
cognizant and courteous of and to our
fellow residents, and tragedies such
as this will not happen again. Our
LETR-LOGIX
sincerest condolences go out to Mr.
Reilly and his children and Anne’s
brothers, sisters, grandchildren and
great grand children.
This past Sunday saw the annual
Adult and Children’s Choirs Concert
under the direction of Sister Mary
Beata at the Point Breeze Club House.
The choirs and the Saturday night folk
group that accompanied them put on
an outstanding show! The crowd was
delighted to hear many classic Christmas Carols such as Silent Night, Little
Drummer Boy and White Christmas in
addition to some great contemporary
songs as Rocking Around The Christmas Tree with the folk band. Great
job by all the members of the Choirs,
the folk group and, of course, Sister
Mary Beata.
Hope everyone has their Christmas
shopping done or are in the final stages
of completing their lists. Was out in
the stores last weekend and the check
out lines though were not as bad as in
years past. Must be that many people are
choosing to do their shopping over the
Internet these days. Though one must
like the ease and convenience of clicking for a gift, there is something lacking
when it comes to online Christmas shopping, it may be the human interaction
or the wishing of a Merry Christmas at
the end of the transaction, but. . .
This Sunday the Rockaway Point
and Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Departments will be holding their annual
children’s Christmas parties at their
respective firehouses starting at 12:30
PM. These are always well-attended
parties with smiling children as far as
the eye can see. Chiefs Eddie Valentine
and Marty Ingram would like to see
every child come and get some lap time
with Santa Claus. The Chiefs remind
everyone that if your child isn’t feeling
well that day to call the firehouse and

It’s getting closer and closer – hope
you all have your Christmas shopping
done!! Last minute is too hectic and this
year it seems the holidays came “all of a
sudden”. We are now in the fourth week
of Advent, the First week of Advent was
HOPE – one of the sayings I recall is that
“Hope is the belief that good things will
happen”. The second week ofAdvent was
PEACE – we can have peace in our lives if
we try to share peace with family, friends,
neighbors and people we meet. The third
week in Advent was JOY – does happiness equal joy? Happiness passes but joy
remains in our hearts. This coming week
is the fourth week of Advent – is LOVE
a word that is most used in our lives. We
all want to love and be loved. Are we
giving and receiving love and showing
concern for one another? Think about it
and remember Advent is the coming of
Christ – so let’s keep Christ in Christmas.
He is LOVE. Three words to keep in mind
Hope, Peace, Joy and Love; they can be
helpful when making choices.
It is a fact that drugs are a serious
problem all over the world and confronting all you young people and adults as
well. In this morning’s newspaper Dec.
8, 2010, it comes as no surprise that drug
dealing was prevalent in a prestigious
University Columbia. As a result of
anonymous complaints from students the
N.Y.P.D. Narcotics Unit ran a 5-month
sting. The students involved came from
families who were doctors, professors,
and nurses. What is alarming is the
student who was the ringleader had his
tuition paid by “billionaire Bill Gates” as
a Millennium Student. This young man

Tragedy On The Road
On Sunday, December 12th, around 7PM in the evening during a
driving rain storm, a pedestrian was hit by a car on the Main Road by
Beach 204th Street. The pedestrian, Mrs. Anne Reilly, was hit as she
crossed the road to await her son who was arriving momentarily on an
access-a-ride van. She was quickly transported to Brookdale Hospital by
a Rockaway Point Fire Department ambulance crew. Though valiantly
worked on by the ambulance crew and emergency room personnel, Mrs.
Reilly eventually succumbed to the injuries sustained during the accident
and passed away at the hospital.
According to an eyewitness who was driving behind the driver of the
vehicle, speed was not an issue as the driver was within the speed limit,
but visibility due to the driving rain and wind, was less than ideal.
The NYPD’s Highway Department conducted an investigation at
the scene and the driver of the vehicle passed a field sobriety test. No
criminality was attributed to the driver and the NYPD’s investigators
have ruled the incident an accident.
Editor’s note, our sincerest condolences go out to the Reilly family.
started a party production company in
his dorm room. He was called “the party
guy” and made thousands of dollars dealing. He along with four other Ivy league
members were charged with selling drugs
to under cover cops. This buyer had a
large choice of narcotics such as Ecstasy,
Coke, Marijuana, LSD laced mints and
sweet tarts along with pills from their
personal stash of Adderall – a stimulant.
The big claim and reason given by the
students involved was they needed the
money to pay tuition in order to stay in
Columbia. The instigators of this drug
dealing five was the one person getting
a FREE education, and with persuasion
convinced the others the profits would
help pay their tuition. These young men
were gifted-one was a neuroscience
major and member of a fencing team.
Another gave the Salutation Address in
high school and elected Vice President
in the Engineering School’s Student
Council. He did cancer research and
was applying to graduate schools. All
had high aspirations and were gifted in
the fields they chose. How sad – what a
waste of bright scholars. As the people
stated, “Even Columbia couldn’t escape
the lure of drugs”. On Sunday Dec. 12,
2010 in the newspaper – a follow up on
this case. The “Columbia Drug Bust
shows how RAMPANT drugs are at colleges, especially in New York where it is
easier to get them. One student from Pace
University said, “It’s pretty normal – we
have people at parties holding up bags
of Coke and asking, “Does anyone want
some”. Hard to believe but true especially
this Columbia bust where “drug dealing was big business for the Columbian
Quintet.” A Special Narcotics Prosecutor
stated, “This was not some kids sitting
around smoking Pot and listening to
music. We haven’t handled this kind of
investigation in my memory. It’s the most
extensive dealing on a campus we’ve had
on a campus in terms of volume of drugs
and people”. The old saying, “Money is
the root of all evil” and believe me it is.
Just read the papers!
In closing dear Teens and Pre Teens,
young adults, etc., etc. 1940 Quote “Be
a role model and take very good care of
your reputation”.

The Rockaway Theatre Company
In Partnership with
Gateway National Recreation Area
Proudly Presents
Dear Santa:
This year, the shareholders of the
Breezy Point Cooperative wish for
the following:
Another 50 years (at least!) of
health and happiness in this little
paradise by the sea that we call
Breezy Point.
That all drivers in our community
keep safety first and foremost in their
minds, and obey all traffic laws. That
they drive very carefully, especially
on Rockaway Point Boulevard (the
“Main Road”), staying within the
speed limit, and not recklessly passing school buses, the Cooperative’s
“Blue Goose/White Swan,” or other
cars. That they come to a stop at the
red “Yield” sign when they exit the
Marine Parkway Bridge, and look
for traffic before proceeding on State
Road. That they stop for pedestrians
in crosswalks, and always keep a careful eye out for bicyclists and people
walking or crossing the road.
That all bicyclists in our community wear a helmet, have reflectors
and lights on their bikes for riding
at night, and follow all the rules
pertaining to bicycle riding including
staying in bike lanes where labeled.
First foremost, that they always keep
the safety of pedestrians in mind.
Pedestrians who stay out of the
labeled bike lanes.
Yellow school buses that allow
7th and 8th graders to ride.
Better transportation: for example, express buses to Downtown
Manhattan; more Q35 buses with
better service; and fast, affordable
ferry service.
Continuation of the Southside
Johnny and other great rock concerts
at the Colony.
A Cooperative Board of Directors
and Management that actually listens
to what the shareholders want.
No more ill-conceived Cooperative projects, such as:
Sewer systems that are inappropriate for and unwanted by the
community.
Parking lots that are unwanted and
unnecessary.
Volleyball courts that cost too
much and are installed improperly.
A Nominating process for the
Board of Directors that will give
shareholders at least two candidates
for each open position, so that the
shareholders will have a real choice
in electing Directors. In other words,
a slate of 10 candidates for the 5
Director positions which are up for
election each year.
Real, contested elections for all
officers and trustees of the Point
Breeze Association, Rockaway Point
Association, and People’s Association of Roxbury.
Absentee ballots for all Cooperative and Association elections.
Term limits for the Cooperative Board
of Directors, Association officers and
trustees, and General Management.
A Cooperative Committee selection process that allows all shareholders interested in serving on committees to participate.
Disclosure of the voting history
of every member of the Cooperative
Board of Directors.
More transparency and trustworthiness on behalf of our Cooperative
leadership.
Respectfully submitted on behalf
of the community,

Weiner on House Passage of
DREAM Act
“This Is a Great Night for All Americans”
Following House passage of the
Development, Relief, and Education
for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act,
which would allow certain young,
undocumented students to start a
path to permanent residency, Representative Anthony Weiner, the only
New York member who serves on the
House Immigration Subcommittee,
released the following statement:
“This is good news for the young,
quintessentially American students
who would directly benefit from
this bill, but we are all better off
because of this vote. This bill will
make our great nation even greater
with a modest improvement in our
immigration laws.”
“This is a great night for all
Americans.”
The DREAM Act would allow
undocumented young people who
were brought to the United States by
their parents to start on the path to
permanent residency provided they
complete two years of college or two
years of military service. Beneficiaries must have lived in the US for at
least five years to be eligible and must
have come to the US prior to their
sixteenth birthday. The legislation
must now be taken up the Senate.

ROCKAWAY IRREGULAR
by Stuart W. Mirsky
The Prophet In His Own Land
Suddenly it’s winter.A fierce cold snap
and the first real snowfall of the season,
swirling eddies blotting out the glow of
the street lamps outside my window just a
few nights ago. Time to pull out my aged
leather jacket (World War II bomber style)
which a pal of mine has been poking fun
at for years and ditch the thin cloth one I’d
been relying on. It’s time to think about
the passing of another year, too.
Roughly twelve months ago I wrote
in these pages about someone else who
was thinking about other years. Former
Russian KGB analyst Igor Panarin made a
name for himself as a pundit and prophet
in post Soviet Russia when, in 1998, he
predicted the impending break-up of the
United States - by the year 2010 he told
audiences and reporters, a year now passing into the history books with no such
imminent break-up in sight.
Panarin had forecast that mass immigration into this country, combined with
an ongoing economic and moral disintegration here would be the end of us as a
unified nation, precipitating the collapse
of our currency and our fragmentation into
several smaller and much weaker states.
This would make room for the rise
of other powers including (no surprise
here!) a resurgent Russia, he said. Texas
and the American south, along with
parts of the southwest, would fall under
Mexican domination, if not her outright

annexation, while California and other
far western states would fall to Chinese
control. Midwestern America and many
of the north central western states would
come under Canadian influence while the
eastern seaboard, as far south as South
Carolina and as far west as Tennessee,
would end up under the domination of
the European Union. Hawaii, he added,
would be peeled off by China or Japan
while Russia would, of course, get back
Alaska. Well, so much for prophets.
As it happens there’s hardly enough
time left in 2010 for any of it and Mexico,
with raging unrest along its northern border hardly looks like a likely competitor
for any part of the United States at this
writing. The EU’s got problems of its own,
too, with a sovereign debt crises across a
number of its member states, from Greece
to Ireland and Spain, and a currency in
need of shoring up. China is certainly
growing in economic and political clout
but it still has its hands full with inflationary pressures and underemployment while
North Korea, not averse to a little mischief
on China’s eastern border, kicks up its
heels and annoys the region once more.
Even China, delighted as it must be at any
American discomfiture, doesn’t need that
headache now. And Russia? Yes, they’re
flexing their muscles again and pressuring America in Europe, but it’s eastern
Europe where their worries currently lie,
in the lands between themselves and the
European Union to their west.
So it looks like Panarin’s predictions
are a little bit off as the year of reckoning
winds down. But it’s fair to say that we’re
not over the hump quite yet. We still have
some pretty big difficulties including budgetary problems as we’re now borrowing
an estimated forty cents on every dollar we
spend. Unless this deficit and the coming
debt crisis it will fuel are finally brought
under control, Igor Panarin could still look
like a genius because an America that’s
borrowed to the hilt is an America whose
global clout must stand diminished.

ROCKAWAY DOINGS
by SARA & RICHARD BERGER
Richard has had to admit that
retirement has some benefits. While
he doesn’t actively need the training
now, as he no longer works nights, he
has a bunch of Continuing Medical
Education classes he’s going to. He’s
found a garage near New
York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell
hospital costing a lot less than the
first one we’ve already mentioned
in this column, and has now taken a
class at Winthrop University Hospital
in Mineola, parking for NO fee.
Now, if either or both Peninsula
Hospital Center and St. Johns Episcopal Hospital could run EMS related
classes for the municipal, proprietary,
and Volunteer EMTs and Paramedics living or working in or near the
Rockaways, wouldn’t that be a nice
thing? Hey, PHC and St. Johns, are
ya listening?
It is our understanding that the
NYC Department of Sanitation seasonally changes their times of garbage
pickup, so they can have a few crews
on, in the middle of the night, to, as
needed, stop pickup and commence
snowplow operations. That is the possible explanation why, when we put
out, to the curbside, our recyclables
after 8 PM Sunday nights, lately,
they aren’t collected until almost 9
PM Monday nights, instead of before
we come out to pick up the Monday
morning newspaper from our steps.
Not complaining, just noting, folks.
Sara recalls a time when Richard
was very small, and she came out of
the house, to find a large group of
7 and 8 year old children, and one
(supposed) “adult” in our family yard,
cheering on a fistfight between 2 very
young children. One of the combatants was Richard. Sara stopped the
fight, and chased all not from our
household off our property.
After all these 50 some-odd years,
Sara is still upset that the “adult” present, the father of the other combatant,
had not made any attempt to stop the
fight, and actually was cheering the
“fighters” on.
Perhaps the father’s mentality
continues. How else can one explain
posting videos of fights, unsanctioned
by any agency or school, on Youtube,
or other “post your own” video sites
on the Internet?
Sara has been musing on the new
Department of Education Chancellor, who has gotten the waiver for

the job on the hiring of someone
else with an educational background
to be her lieutenant. Richard asks
why the person with the educational
background didn’t get the top post in
the first place.
Sara jokingly feels that SHE would
have been a better choice for the
Chancellor position, as she not only
raised 3 children, but herself was a
teacher, and was the daughter of an
assistant principal. Some of what her
mother did, Sara probably learned
through osmosis.
With the “closing” and restructuring of Beach Channel High School,
and Far Rockaway High School
(Sara’s Alma Mater), she fears property values throughout the peninsula
will plummet, from the City/Nassau
line west to “Tip Beach”. Who in
their right mind would buy a home
without a high functioning school,
on all levels, in, or reasonably close
to, that home? With the restructuring
of the 2 high schools, the Rockaways
and Broad Channel communities no
longer have a comprehensive high
school, teaching Advanced algebra and foreign languages, to shop
classes, all within the same school
building’s walls.
Why is there such fuss and bother
over “same sex” marriages? The
way things are going, THEY are
the ONLY ones at least ATTEMPTING to get married. Many couples,
“straight” and “otherwise”, raise their
children without formalizing their
relationship.
Sara, as previously noted in this
column, has a subscription to the
“Roundabout Theater”. This subscription pays for 8 shows in a year.
For her, this involves transportation
to and from “the city”, and some arrangements for a meal while out. It
means planning for a full day. However, this week, we attended a show
at the Rockaway Theater Company.
The production was Neil Simon’s
“The Odd Couple”. During the performance, Sara kept mentally comparing
the “real” with the “amateur” presentations. Hers, Richard’s, and the rest
of our party of four, concluded that
there was no direct difference.
Well, not within the shows themselves. The differences were in not
needing to devote the entire day to
“going to see a show”. We ate locally,
and needed about 10 minutes driving
to get there. Also, we always meet
our friends and neighbors, and not so
local friends, in the audiences. Did
we see you there?

OUR
TROOPS
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2010
Some time ago I wrote about our
Coop supplying stickers for Bicycles to
identify the bike as belonging to a Coop
resident, it being the same number as the
sticker on the resident’s automobile.
Great Idea! It could have been
done so easily. The stickers would
have been part of the automobile pass
package we all apply for in the New
Year. Thus, every bicycle in the Coop
could have been identified as belonging
to a resident, if stolen its owner could
easily be found and notified, and if the
bicycle were involved in any violation
the owner would receive the citation
and have to respond.
I thought it was a great idea, but
guess what, It isn’t going to happen.
But maybe wait till next year.
I wrote a column for the October
22 edition of the Pointer outlining
my idea for getting all bikes supplied
with ID stickers, and on November 2nd
I wrote a letter to our Board with the
same information. But apparently no
one on the Board reads my column,
(Very possible) and my letter possibly
reached the Board after the new 2011
ROCKAWAY POINT NEWS
passes were ordered.
What really bothers me is that I
would think we’d have a Bicycle safety
Committee. If we don’t, then I’m sure
we have Public Safety Committee. That
being the case, nothing has been done
year in and year out to do anything
about the Bicycle problem.
Every adult and especially every
older adult on foot have been harassed
by bike riders in both directions on the
beach walks to the ocean. The absence
of a sign at the walks entrance, which
abuts the bike lane, implies that the
walk is OK for bike riders. Is it or is it
not for bikes?
On the sidewalks throughout the
Coop bikes vie for room weaving in
and out of persons walking. Sidewalks
are for pedestrians, bike lanes are for
bikes. But there is no enforcement.
Why? Probably because its too difficult
to identify the violator. If the bike had
a sticker with a 4 digit number it would
be a piece of cake.
Oceanside Walk in Breezy has a
bike lane, but it ends when it reaches
Lincoln Walk.

Why, because homes to the East of
Lincoln that front on the walks chose
to add porches (with Coop approval)
that also allow egress directly onto
Oceanside where the Bike lane would
be. If these few porches were ignored
the bike lane could have run all the way
to Reid Ave.
Each season the Bicycle problem
raises to a crescendo, Labor Day arrives and the population decreases. The
ratio of bikes to pedestrian’s changes
to a reasonable number and the year
continues with everyone content. Then
our Schools close and the summer
residents arrive, the ratio of bikes to

How can we hope to sustain a strong
military - the only thing between us
and the instability of an increasingly
rambunctious globe, from Iran to a
resurgent Russia and China, to Hugo
Chavez’ bellicose Venezuela and the
stateless al Qaeda family of terrorists if we can’t pay for it? And how can we
exert influence in more peaceful ways
if we’re dependent on the goodwill of
the nations we need to influence, like
China, because we’re in hock to them?
How do we stay prosperous and stable
if our wealth is ultimately inflated away
through a dollar that’s been weakened to
deal with a massive debt load we can’t
handle in other ways - or if taxes go so
high that our economy is hammered
back to the seventies when stagflation
pedestrian’s changes and its every man
for himself.
One thing remains constant, and
that is the total lack of enforcement by
Security of the bicycle regulations.
But Security is never lax on its
enforcement of the automobile regulations. Possibly because every vehicle
has a sticker with a number that delivers
the violation directly to the owner.
Could the same thing happen if every
Bike had a sticker with a number that
would deliver the violation directly to
the responsible party?
What do you think?
Bye
sucked the life and wealth from this
country, along with its pride and self
assurance?
Panarin seems to have gotten the
details wrong, but he’s certainly noticed
something - problems which have only
grown worse in the recent political
environment. The election this past
November reshuffled the political cards
once again in light of the spending bonanza which two years of Democratic
rule in Washington have bequeathed
us. But those in Congress who voted
for that spending show no signs of going quietly.
House Democrats re-elected Nancy
Pelosi as their leader despite the electoral
debacle she brought them to and now
they’ve balked at the tax compromise
worked out by a Democratic president
and the newly resurgent Republican

Holy Mackerel
By Joan Mettler
Disclaimer: This column is neither about piety nor fish.
Tax Cuts, Ho Hum
Tax cuts for the middle class appear to be high on the agenda of the
White House. Surely the middle class
could use a break (or several) as it is
slowly disappearing from America’s
economic landscape. Why, then, is
the news of tax cuts for the middle
class looked on with skepticism by
many Americans for whom those
cuts were intended? If these cuts are
supposed to relieve financial burdens
from the middle classers who are still
employed, middle classers must wake
up to the fact we are being played like
a fiddle.
Every time the middle class (MC)
is about to catch a tax break from
the feds, state and city taxes and fees
trump that break. Currently, the feds
are looking at leaving more money in
the paychecks of workers, which would
be wonderful if MC members had jobs.

Let us labor under the assumption that
MCers are working and they do get
more income because the feds take
out less per check. Where would that
new found wealth go?
If one resides in New York City, that
money, the fed bonus, is immediately
earmarked to compensate for city and
state tax short falls. One would have
to wonder how the feds can cut taxes
when our country (and major parts
of the world) is in the throes of an
economic disaster. A reason for fed
largess might be that individual cuts
remain in the geographic area of the
taxpayer and can do most good there.
Were the feds to merely grant states and
cities funds to keep them solvent, by
the time those funds got to their target,
they most probably all but disappear.
Thus, the fed is banking on its middle
class to utilize this illusory income
boost close to home to stimulate local
economies. Another reason for politicians talking MC tax cuts to death is
to keep everybody’s eyes off the bigger picture, money mismanagement
at the highest government levels, lest
Americans wake up to the rough shod
manner with which our economy is
being handled and revolt.
Locally, our state is in deep debt as
is our city. One can tell the state is in
hock up to its ears because OTB execs
raised their own pay just before it went
under. Can you envision a painting of
pigs at a trough? As opposed to our
state and city following the fed lead
and cutting our taxes in these tough
economic times, a good bet would be
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2010
MC taxes will climb locally. Look for
state taxes to increase on sales taxes
and anything else Albany can conjure
up with the exception of cutting politicians’ pay. In the city, real estate taxes
have already been increased again
further harming what is left of the
middle class. Tolls, transit fares and
parking meter fees have increased.
And, the latest shot across the bow of
the middle class is the “accident fee”
a driver incurs as the result of Fire
Department ambulances being called
to the site of an automobile accident.
The fee, ranging from the mid-three
hundreds to the mid-five hundreds
will be invoked at the accident scene
regardless of where the fault lies.
And, just whose pocketbook will be
punished by the new accident fees?
Is it upper class Manhattan dwellers
who mostly walk, take cabs and use
public transportation? No, it is the
middle class who reside in the outer
boroughs and actually use automobiles
to get from place to place, the same
middle class that commutes to work
on public conveyances, feeds parking
meters and bears the burden of the
majority of traffic violations.
At this time our priority for economic discussion should not be tax
cuts; but, should be how we can bring
jobs back to this country. The path to
jobs seems quite easy for everyone
but politicians whose lifestyles are
being financed by big business: Charge
companies a tax for every job they
export (outsource). Limit the number

The Great Looks Debate
There have been great debates in the
course of history. There were the Abraham Lincoln-Stephen Douglas debates
as well as the John F. Kennedy-Richard
Nixon debates—both of which may have
changed the course of American history.
Then there are other debates, lesser known
but equally as compelling. For example,
the Great Mayo Debate, I’m not making
this up, held on grits.com. To Miracle
Whip or not to Miracle Whip, that is the
question. (Fortunately, this debate is only
held in cyberspace as who knows what an
angry, spurned mob of Hellmann’s users,
wielding plastic knives and Kaiser Rolls,
is capable of.)
However, there is no debate more
important than the Great Looks Debate that occurs within a family each
time a baby is born. Whom does the
baby look like? Of course, the first
reaction—because the baby usually
is wrinkled and has no hair—it looks
like Grandpa. Then after the bad jokes
subside, leaving poor Grandpa checking
his scalp in the mirror, the bickering
begins. Baby pictures, that no one in
the world has ever seen, start coming
out of the woodworks.
“She looks just like Great Aunt
Edna,” someone announces holding
a torn black and white photo half a
century old.
“Who’s Aunt Edna?”
Poor Aunt Edna, god rest her soul,
is now as famous as she ever was when
she was alive.
Then the debates turn to the living.
Uncles, aunts, and brothers, who may
have the same color hair or eyes, now bear
a striking resemblance to the baby.
“Just look at this picture. The
baby’s resemblance to your brother is
uncanny,” Grandma says.
Everyone feigns agreement fully
realizing Grandma isn’t wearing her
glasses and is holding a picture of Aunt
Marie rather than Uncle Bill. Besides,
Grandma is cooking dinner—hopefully,
with glasses on—and, you don’t insult
the chef.
My family is no different. When
my daughter was born, the arguments
ensued. Each side of the family claimed
she looked like one of theirs. And neither side was willing to budge. Things
became so heated I fully expected TV’s
Judge Judy to arbitrate the matter. My
daughter, barely two-months-old, would
be placed on the stand as exhibit A. Judge
David Shannon
Florist & Nursery
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2010
Judy would yell at everyone in the courtroom, including my daughter. Then, just
like in the movies, a star witness would
emerge with a photo that would finally
put an end to this discussion.
Thankfully, the debate waned as my
daughter’s looks began to change and
someone else in the family became pregnant. The bull’s-eye had squarely moved
to my sister-in-law’s birth canal.
Three years later, when my son was
born, the bull’s-eye moved back into our
court. However, within a couple of months
it was apparent that my son, blonde-hair
and blue-eyes, looked nothing like me,
or my Italian side of the family. Half of
Poland, Germany, and Sweden, looked
more like my son I did. He was clearly the
spitting image of my wife—blonde-hair,
blue-eyes and 100% Polish.
Jokingly, I’d hold my son up, with
his face next to mine, and say, “Look,
Twins.” Everyone laughed. However,
when a cousin facetiously suggested,
“Are you sure he’s yours?” I began to
wonder. Could someone else really be the
father? And why was Hans, the strapping
UPS guy, suddenly transferred to another
route before the baby was born?
My wife laughed at the thought of
someone else being the father.
“Of course he’s yours, honey. He
cries all the time,” my wife said.
“When do I cry?”
“Whenever your baseball or football
or basketball team loses...”
We both laughed knowing that my
wife is faithful, my teams stink and that
I am a sore loser. However, an insecure
part of me wondered if Hans is a sore
loser as well. As soon as the DNA results
arrive in the mail, this debate will be
over as well.

Ask corporate lobbyists, senators and

Instead of robbing Peter to pay

Peter’s debt to Paul. Our weak

don’t believe the MC will ever get a

private industry honorable, taxpayers
could be guaranteed of a believable

ROCKAWAY POINT NEWS
Welcome Alison Mary Valdemira
Last Chance To See The Odd Couple!
For the past two weekends the sounds
of laughter have emanated from the Post
Theater at Fort Tilden as The Rockaway
Theatre Company is presenting its final
offering of the 2010 season, Neil Simon’s
hilarious classic, The Odd Couple.
Because of the success of both the film
and the syndicated T.V. show, most audiences are familiar with the story which
centers on a pair, (hence the “couple”), of
very different, (hence the “odd”) divorced,
and soon-to-be divorced, middle-aged
men. Beginning with its Broadway inception in 1965, a long line of great comic
actors have portrayed the boorish slob,
Oscar Madison and the obsessive neatfreak, Felix Unger, commencing with
Walter Matthau and Art Carney. Most
familiar of these are probably Walter
Matthau and Jack Lemmon who starred in
the movie version and Jack Klugman and
Tony Randall for their brilliant portrayals
in the T.V. version.
Directors Peggy Page and Michael
Wotypka had their work cut out for them

in finding two actors to assume such iconic
shoes, but they have found the perfect
team in RTC veteran actors Bernie Bosio
and David Risley. Both actors have been
with the RTC for many years. During
this, the 2010
season Bosio, (Oscar) was last seen as
the charming Cuban ambassador, Senor
Sanchez, in Cactus Flower, while Risley
(Felix), played the cross-dressing slave,
Hysterium, in A Funny Thing Happened
on the Way to the Forum. Together these
two real-life old buddies will bring a magical combination of “pig and prude” to the
stage and tears of hysteria to the eyes of
audience members. Bringing some gleam
and glamour to the production are Susan
Corning and Kim Simek as the lovely
Pigeon Sisters, who
manage to steal each scene they appear
in. Rounding out a most excellent cast
of characters are Felix and Oscar’s card
player cronies played by- Joe Canizio,
Frank Freeman, Jose Velez and, making
his stage debut in the role ofVinnie, RTC’s

own Norm Scott.
As usual, master craftsman, Tony
Homsey, has worked set magic in his
recreation of Oscar’s slovenly Riverside
Drive apartment. Costumes and props are
impeccable and bring us back to NewYork
City as it was in 1965. The chemistry and
timing among the members of this incredible ensemble are truly amazing. All this
culminates in an evening of sidesplitting
laughs that should not be missed.
You will definitely want to take a break
from holiday shopping and celebrations
and make your way up to the Post Theater
at Fort Tilden if you have not yet done so.
This is the final weekend! The fun ends
with the matinee performance at 2PM
on Sunday. Don’t miss your chance to
witness one of the funniest plays created by the comic genius of Neil Simon.

Easy Breezy Recipe
“Healthy Family Money Matters”
Do you and your family have regular conversations about finance? Probably
not, if you are the typical American family. The only time most families have
money discussions is when there is some sort of problem. Usually when someone looses a job. This is the worst of times to start a family discussion. You’ve
just lost a job, and are upset. You probably want to yell at your boss, but he’s
not around, so you let it out on the family. Try having seasonal family meetings
to discuss money. Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, will allow an easy three
month review of the families finances. Children who participate in family financial discussions, tend to have a much healthier attitude toward money. Giving
a child an allowance, can be an excellent teaching tool. Require them to save
something, give something to the church, and keep a record of how they spent
the rest. Financial organization, discipline, and communication will go a long
way to keeping the family healthy concerning money matters.
Enjoy, and encourage family financial discussions,
Bob Melli

leadership. It’s likely to pass anyway,
despite the posturing of those who have
long sought more taxation to pay for their
spending habit. But their intransigent class
warfare bodes ill for the year ahead.
The problem we’re facing isn’t that
we aren’t taxed enough, contrary to the
narrative of the spenders. It’s that we’re
spending too much in a frenzy of new
benefits spearheaded by the outgoing
Democratic Congress and the White
House. This week we’ve been hit by the
continuing evidence of that as the lame
duck Democratic Senate under its leader,
Nevada Senator Harry Reid, delivered an
omnibus spending bill exceeding 2,000
pages which no one but its writers seem
to have read (if they have even read it all)
full of earmarked spending and bulking
up the federal baseline in anticipation
of the promised fiscal restraint of newly
strengthened Republicans in Congress.
Shades of the 2,000 plus page you’ll-findout-what’s-in-it-when-we’ve-passed-it
Obamacare bill!
Democrats in the House and the Senate are still playing chicken with their
Republican counterparts, hoping that,
as in the Clinton years, Republicans will
get the blame if the government has to be
temporarily shut down because of their
intransigence on spending. It’s a dangerous game, the more so as it represents
a continuation of the bitter partisanship
that came to the fore in the Bush years.
And it’s where Igor Panarin could still
have a point.
Decades of bitter political sniping
between left and right have carved a
political divide down the middle of this
country as evidenced, most recently, by
the stubborn refusal of those on the left
to compromise despite the outcome of
elections which have put a brake on their
spending agenda. As we go into a new
year with newly divided government, only
compromise and an interest in the greater
national good can heal the wounds of past
political battles.
Even President Obama seems to see
that, despite his sometimes impolitic
choice of words about Republicans being
“political enemies” and “hostage takers”. Even he seems to be trying to find
some middle ground from which he and
Republicans can jointly govern (although
those words suggest a residual eagerness
to pull the rug out from under the other
side as soon as he’s able).
But there are still those in his own
party, like Pelosi and Reid, with a takeno-prisoners mentality, even after this
past November’s message from voters.
And it’s that mindset, that refusal to meet
other Americans half way, that can do us
in. America may yet be strong enough to
weather its current spending and borrowing problems - if we start doing so now.
And it may be strong enough to deal with
a host of nations newly feeling their oats
across the globe, some of whom would
gladly see us removed entirely from the
world stage. But is it strong enough to deal
with its own political divisions? Can its
political class recognize that in democracies they’re supposed to do the will of the
people rather than their own thing?
If compromise isn’t possible now, if
diverse and diverging political factions
cannot at last come together to pursue the
common good of guiding and governing
this country, if we cannot put an end to the
class warfare and partisan stubbornness
we’ve been witnessing for decades, then
Igor Panarin and others like him could
still have it right - whatever the year of
reckoning turns out to be.

“DON’T wait until next year!” Online
registration for the 2011 season is now
available.
Parents who sign up their children
now can take advantage of the Early
Bird discount. Fees this month are $150
for one child, $250 for two children
and $350 for three or more children.
These fees will increase after January.
The web address for online registration
is www.odgroup.com/rockaway-littleleague.
About 800 boys and girls from
Rockaway participate in Little League
baseball and softball, more than 100 of
them from the Point. In fact, last year’s
Major Girls Champions were led by
local stars Lauren Durante, Melissa
Piccione and Jenny Fahy.
Key dates for the 2011 season are
set. Due to the lateness of Easter and
Passover in 2011, the first games will
be played the weekend of April 2 and
the official Opening Day ceremony is
planned for April 9. Player evaluations
will be conducted the weekends of
March 12 and 19. The league draft for
competitive divisions will occur March
24. Our players will march in the St.
Patrick’s Day parade (March 5) and the
Memorial Day parade (May 30).
Rockaway Little League hopes to
expand its Challenger Division in 2011
after a successful inaugural season.
The Challenger Division is for boys
and girls of all ages with physical and
mental challenges.
Since 1995, Rockaway Little
League has been played all its games
at the complex it built in Ft. Tilden.
The main Little League site is www.

Weiner Responds to Court Ruling on
Individual Mandate:
“ ‘Conservatives’ Seem to Want the
Courts to Defer, Except When they Don’t”
Following the ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Henry E. Hudson that
the individual mandate in the health care reform legislation requiring Americans to purchase health insurance is unconstitutional, Rep. Anthony Weiner
released the following statement:
“Against the background of a complex legal question about the reach of
the Commerce Clause is a rather humorous example of intellectual gymnastics.”
“It’s funny to witness my ‘conservative’ friends lose their respect for
Congress in law-making. They seem to want the courts to defer, except when
they don’t.”

Christmas Cakes
Leading the League in Spreading Holiday Insults Amongst Ourselves!
Just in time for the holidays, Coach
Corral has dreamt up another scheme to
keep his name in the paper. Fresh from his
latest business seminar, “KeepingYourself
Relevant Even if You Add Nothing To
Society”, chaired by the Donald himself,
Corral has decided every child would love
bobble head dolls of the Johnny Cakes.
Upon hearing this plan, many Cakes were
overheard quoting Mr. Taggert of Blazing
Saddles fame, “What will that blanketyblank think of next.” Now sports fans, we
all know what fills in the blanks, but seeing
how it is Christmas and we’re already on
triple secret probation with the Pointer,
we’ll take the high road. So if your children
were not disappointed enough by the real
Cakes team, now they can let you down
all year round.
Now, the “Eddie”, as he likes to refer
to himself, will try to sell you all the Cake
dolls, but Mom and Dad, do not do it. All
you really need is the Coach and a handful
of vital accessories. First and foremost,
you’ll need the replica cooler, filled to the
lid of course. Much like the real life Cakes,
you show up with that and the team will
just materialize. For the more hard-core
fans, there is also a boom box (music sold
separately), a pop-up tent and a pop-up bar
for frozen drink Sunday. Just think of the
hours (or hour) of entertainment your child
will get with their very own Johnny Cake
Nation and the valuable life lessons that
come from riding roughshod over thirty or
so “free spirits”. Set up the Cakes in any
configuration you can dream of, just be
prepared when they ignore you or, better
yet, scoff at your suggestions.
Highlights of the collection include:
A gigantic Waterhead doll that bobbles
when you foul a ball off its eye
A Gipper doll that magically loses
its sleeves when you make its biceps
bobble
Buy a Wipf doll from the larger Walk
League collection and watch your Corral
doll bobble its head in approval at everything you make your Wipf doll say
While you’re there, pick up an O’Meara
doll and watch it defy gravity and bobble
its head in the “No!” fashion while your
JC dolls perform their antics
We used this patented “Jimmy swivel”
to give you the live action neck twist on
your Kevin Dowd doll as you send line
drives whizzing over its head.Accessorize
the Big Unit with a purple neck brace,
which doubles as a beer coozie for after
the game.
Have hours of endless fun watching
your Smitty doll’s bobble head grow while
you compliment it. Customize it like the
real thing by applying the heart shaped
“Me” tattoo sold separately.
If you accessorize with the cooler, be
amazed as your Paulie Bull bobble moves
under its own power into the cooler ahead
of all the other Cakes. Don’t plan on playing with your Paulie Bull doll after the
game though, unless you want to race it
to its house on your own ten speed.
You must purchase a KD doll if you
want music to play on the music box.Watch
it bobble its head along to the tasty tunes,
if you make the splurge.
Buy a Rockhead bobble head and see if
you can tell the difference between the doll
and the real thing. (Hint, offer it a beer and
depending on its answer, you’ll know)
We know you’ll want a Showtime doll,
but there have been production problems,
forcing us to include a warning sticker.
Despite our best efforts to disable the
speaking feature on the doll, it won’t shut
up. It has the potential to confuse your
children as it calls all of the other Cakes
the wrong names or declares personal
victory as it goes 1 - 6 in a game that the
Cakes lost 27 - 2.
Buy the Stilts doll and watch it scoop
up everything hit his way! Beware,
though, if you buy the optional throwing
arm, unless you want your kids to learn
the art of dodgeball, Patches O’Houlihan
style (“if you can dodge a Stilts throw
from third to “first” while you are sitting
in the right field bleachers, kids, you can
dodge a ball!”).
Grab a Philly B doll and watch it bobble
its head in approval as you take its shirt off
to admire its bitchin’ tan!
Buy the complete Sammon triple set,
but don’t be surprised to hear your child cry
when he/she attempts to set-up the legendary “Sammon Triangle” and finds one or
two of the dolls mysteriously missing.
Answer-Whistling after eating a sleeve
of crackers and writing these articles in the
dead of winter.
Question- Name two things that are
hard to do?
Remember, Sunday is Funday!

Coach’s Corner
By Don Kent
Hello Again! I know everyone is getting ready for the Christmas holidays.
My favorite time of the year besides
the summertime of course.
I want to thank everyone in Breezy
Point for your continued prayers and
support for me. The latest doctor’s
reports last month were good. The Biopsy and the cat scans were all clear.
My next scans will be in February. God
has been good to me.
On a personal note, I would like to
thank Tom Mitchell of the Holy Name
Society (President) who called me to
see how I was doing. Tom also reported
that Fordham Prep (his Alma Mater)
defeated Xavier H.S. 17-7 in the Annual Turkey Bowl Game. Tom said that
there were many Breezy Point people
at the game.
Speaking of Fordham that was
a great comeback win last Saturday
evening when the Fordham Rams upset
St. John’s University 84-81 after being
down 60-39. Don Ryan, the former Editor of the Rockaway Point News and
a loyal Fordham, must have thrown a
party in heaven after the game. I am
sure Johnny “Hoops” namely John
Andrasie, a former Fordham star, was
happy along with Fordham grads Mike
Breen and Michael Kay. I was happy
for Fordham and their new Head Coach
Tom Pecora a class gentleman.
On a personal note Tom lost his
first wife and his father-in-law a former
college coach at St. Francis College in
Maine in a car accident. They were the
victims in a DWI car crash. Years later
Tommie married Mary Beth Cantwell
his high school sweetheart and the
sister of Kevin Cantwell the former
Assistant Coach of Georgia Tech with
Bobby Crimmins. Kevin was an AllCity player at Msgr. McClancy High
School and is a member of McClancy’s
Hall of Fame.
The Battle of the Tully Brothers is
now history as St. Francis College of
Brooklyn defeated Colgate University.
Sorry Gary – Jay won this time. In fact,
that’s two years in a row…
St. Francis College under new Coach
Glen Braca is off to a great start as they
are 5-3 and play Dartmouth an Ivy
League School followed by their first
appearance ever in the Holiday Festival
as they pay Northwestern University
of the Big #10 this coming Monday
evening at Madison Square Garden.
St. John’s University plays Davidson
in the 2nd game. Many New Yorkers
are hoping for a St. John’s-St. Francis
Championship game on Tuesday De-
PAGE 23
cember 21st.
Coach Tim Leary of Utica Walk
and St. Francis Prep and better known
as the “Babe” in his younger years
at Manhattan College has the Little
Terriers off to a good start with a 3-1
record. Over the Christmas holidays
you can see the Prep play in the Aviator
Christmas Classic.
Referee John Nies of Breezy Point
was at Msgr. McClancy last Sunday as he
officiated one of the Consolation Games
in the Brother Arnold Tournament.
I attended the 3rd Annual Joe Lapchick Character Awards Luncheon at
Madison Square Garden as a special
guest of Jim Gatto, the former Boys
Basketball Coach at St. John’s Prep now
retired. Guy Alfieri former St. Francis
Prep player and later a star Guard at
St. John’s University who played under
Joe Lapchick at St. John’s and wrote
a book about him is the organizer of
the event. The three Award winners of
the Lapchick Character Award were:
Bob Hurley Sr., the Head Coach of St.
Anthony’s High School in Jersey City;
Jody Conradt, the Woman’s Coach at the
University of Texas and Gene Keady,
the former Head Coach at Western
Kentucky and Purdue University who
retired withy a career record of 556-284
over 26 seasons. Gene Keady is now
on the bench at St. John’s University
to Head Coach Steve Lavin.
There’s a good doubleheader this
Sunday December 19th starting at 12
Noon with four good college teams
on the Women’s levels. Texas A&M
vs. Rutgers and Ohio State vs. the
number #1 in the USA Connecticut’s
great doubleheader at Madison Square
Garden.
The Giants face the Eagles on
Sunday and Timmy Greene, a summer
resident of Thetford Lane, has invited
me to the game – go Giants.
The Jets are back on earth – I think
they took off into the sky and forgot to
respect their opponents. I do hope they
make it to the playoffs even though I
am not a big Rex Ryan fan. I liked him
at first with his enthusiasm but his big
mouth and ego is his downfall even
though the players like him and he
created a lot of interest and got the Jets
into the playoffs last year but he has to
tune it down. Just my opinion.
I’ll sign off with a good quote
from Father Dennis Ryan S.J. a Jesuit
Priest.
“No one cares how much you know
until they know how much you care”.
Merry Christmas!

Taxpayers Can Take These Healthy,
Wealthy And Wise Actions Now To
Potentially Decrease Their 2010 Tax Bill
HEALTHY ACTIONS
Use health savings and flexible spending accounts as prescribed.
Taxpayers with health savings accounts, even though the money in them
rolls over into the new plan year, have
a last-minute opportunity to use money
in the account to stock up on over-thecounter drugs. Starting in 2011, these
funds no longer can be used to buy overthe-counter drugs (with the exception of
insulin) without a prescription, which
also is a change that applies to flexible
spending accounts.
Taxpayers with flexible savings accounts should spend all the money in
these accounts before Jan. 1, 2011 (before
March 31, 2011 if the plan provides a
grace period) or be subject to the “use it
or lose it” provision.
REVIEW
INCOME, DEDUCTIONS
Taxpayers with a large net capital gain
in 2010 could reduce their tax liability
by selling stock that will generate a loss
before Dec. 31. Without legislative action,
short-term capital gains could be taxed as
much as 35 percent in 2011.
Maximize retirement plan contributions.
Taxpayers who have not contributed
the maximum to their401(k) may consider
increasing contributions for the remainder
of the year; contributions are made pretax, which reduces taxable income and
potentially the overall tax bill.
MAX-OUT
IRA CONTRIBUTIONS
Taxpayers eligible to deduct IRA
contributions can make traditional IRA
contributions to decrease 2010 income
until April 18, 2011, and thus reduce tax
liability on 2010 tax returns.
Consider converting to a Roth IRA.
Convert traditional IRAs to Roth
IRAs by Dec. 31 and pay half the taxes
on the resulting income when filing the
2011 return and the other half when filing
the 2012 return. Unless taxpayers elect
otherwise, they will recognize the income
in two installments.
WISE ACTIONS
Claim homebuyer credits now
For eligible 2010 purchases, the
homebuyer tax credit can be claimed
on 2009 or 2010 tax returns. This gives
taxpayers the option of filing an amended
tax return now for the 2009 tax year and
receiving their money earlier than waiting to claim the credit on their 2010 tax
return when filing in 2011.
MAKE SMART
HIGHER EDUCATION
PAYMENT DECISIONS
Those who haven’t taken full advantage of the American Opportunity
Credit should consider paying spring
college tuition before Dec. 31 to benefit
from the tax break on their 2010 returns.
Also, taxpayers expecting a pay raise in

Msgr. McClancy High School Finishes in
2nd Place in 29th Annual Brother Arnold
Memorial Varsity Basketball Tournament
The Crusaders of Msgr. McClancy
Memorial High School finished 2nd
out of eight Catholic High Schools.
In the 29th Annual Brother Arnold
Memorial Basketball Tournament
held at Msgr. McClancy High School
Friday December 10th to Sunday
December 12th.
In the opening round Msgr. McClancy defeated Cardinal Spellman
of the Bronx 71-39. Senior Jonathan
Velez a 6’ Senior Guard led the way
with 18 points and hit 5 3-pointers.
In the Semi-Finals Msgr. McClancy defeated Blessed Sacrament
H.S. of New Rochelle 84-64. Senior
Forward Patrick Modelewski was
the high scorer with 31 points. A
product of Greenpoint Brooklyn,
Modelewski also had 12 rebounds.
Seniors Jonathan Velez and 6’1 Guard
Jaleel Feurtado had 14 points.
In the Championship game the
Crusaders made a great comeback
after being down by 10 points to St.
John the Baptist H.S. of West Islip,
Long Island to tie the score with about
a minute to go only to fall short 68 to
63. St. John the Baptist had a front
line of 6’8 and 6’7. Coach Kent was
pleased with the effort but not the
outcome, as McClancy was 14 for 26
from the foul line. Patrick Modelewski
and Jaleel Feurtado were named to
the All-Tournament Team.
The team is now 3-3 and Coach
Kent hopes that Senior Forward Chris
Javantizis 6’2 forward can return to
his starting position after breaking
his nose as he hasn’t played the last
four games, but Coach realizes that
injuries are part of the game.
Blessed Sacrament defeated St.
John’s Prep 60-45 for 3rd Place. St.
Edmunds Prep defeated Cardinal
Spellman 37 to 18 for 5th Place and
St. Dominic’s (LI) defeated Cathedral
Prep 57 to 44 for 7th place.
2011 may want to pre-pay their tuition
if they anticipate their new income level
phasing out their eligibility for education
credits.
GO GREEN
Home energy- efficiency improvements are eligible for a tax credit of 30
percent of the cost, with a maximum of
$1,500 claimed for 2009 and 2010 combined. This includes external windows
and doors, insulation, roofing, HVAC and
non-solar water heaters meeting specific
energy guidelines.

Schumer: Commuter Tax Benefit Worth Up To
$1,000 Per Year Poised To Pass Senate
U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer
announced that the federal mass transit tax break, which currently saves
mass transit riders over $1,000 per
year, will be extended by the Senate
through 2011. The commuter benefit
covers up to $230 per month from a
person’s gross income to pay for their
mass transit commutes, which is an
increase from the $120 benefit that
was in place until 2009. Without the
extension, the benefit was set to revert
back to $120 per month and would
have resulted in a greater benefit to
commuters who drove to work. Employees whose monthly mass transit
fees are less than $230 can deduct
the full amount from their paychecks,
tax free, through an employer benefit
program. Schumer plans to continue
his push to make the $230 transit
benefit permanent. The measure is
included in the tax bill compromise
that passed the Senate in a cloture
vote recently.
“This is a major victory for mass
transit riders in New York and will
ensure that come January 1, 2011,
commuters won’t be facing even more
commuting costs than they currently
do,” said Schumer. “With increased
fares and reduced services we need to
maintain incentives for middle class
New Yorkers so they don’t have to
break the bank when commuting to
and from work.”
Schumer authored the original
legislation that passed as part of the
economic stimulus package, allowing
employers to offer their employees
up to $230 per month in transit
benefits tax free, equal to what they
were offering tax-free for parking
costs. The transit benefit reduces a
commuter’s transportation costs by
a third or more. If allowed to expire
there would be a greater incentive
for people to drive to work rather
than take mass transit, as the $230
pre-tax savings would still apply to
those who drive. Schumer noted the
$230 per month benefit will fully
cover the monthly cost of riding all
major mass transit systems in the
city – subway, bus, express bus, and
will cover most of Metro North and
LIRR commuting costs.
“With over a third of companies
across the country offering the
benefit, accounting for 52% of employees, the Senate’s passage of the
extension is clear indication that the
transit commuter benefit offers real
savings to commuters and employers
nationwide and is an effective means
of rewarding commuters who make
the environmentally sound choice of
taking public transportation to work,”
said Daniel M. Neuburger, President
and CEO of TransitCenter, Inc. “The
goal now is to look beyond 2011 and
make the new transit cap and parity
with parking benefits, a permanent
fixture of Internal Revenue Code Section 132(f) which governs commuter
tax benefits.”
Schumer also said that the New
Yorkers who benefit the most from
the transit benefit are people who
commute from the outer boroughs,
Long Island and Westchester. Under
the old cap of $120 per month, only
a small portion of the total monthly
cost of commuting on the ExpressBus, LIRR and MetroNorth was fully
covered.
NYC Bus and Subway – The mass
transit benefit covers the full $104 per
month cost of an Unlimited 30-day
MetroCard.
Express Bus – The mass transit
benefit fully covers the monthly cost
of buying a weekly pass on MTA
express bus, which costs $50 a week.
Under the old benefit, only 60 percent
of the cost would be covered.
LIRR – The mass transit benefit
now nearly fully covers the typical
monthly pass from the most common
commuting areas. For example, a
monthly ticket from Garden City to
Penn Station, which now costs $233,
PAGE 25
would only be 51 percent covered by
the old mass transit benefit. Without
an extension of the benefit, a commuter from Garden City loses $110
in pre-tax benefits.
MetroNorth – The mass transit
benefit now nearly fully covers
the typical monthly pass for most
MetroNorth riders. For example, a
monthly ticket from White Plains
to Grand Central Terminal, which
as of December 30,, 2010 is $229,
would only cover 52% under the
old benefit. With the extension of
the benefit through 2011, the entire
cost is covered.

Easy care houseplants. These indoors plants are extremely hard to kill
with neglect, yet they’ll add that homey
feel that only plants can bring.
The Diffenbachia is a beautiful, if
sometimes confusing, group of plants.
These plants feature pointed, broad
leaves in a variety of combinations of
green and white. A large, well-grown
dieffenbachia can reach five feet, with
leaves of a foot or more. However,
the plants will rarely reach this size in
typical indoor conditions. The so-called
dumb cane gets its name from its milky
sap, which is a mild irritant and should
be kept from bare skin. The sap can
cause temporary loss of speech.
Growing Conditions: Light: They
appreciate bright light during winter
months. During the growing season, the
plant prefers dappled shade or indirect
light. Water: During the growing season,
they like regular moisture and do not
want to dry out. A large dieffenbachia
might need to be watered twice a week.
In the winter, cut back water. Soil: Use
a fast-draining, well-aerated potting mix.
Temperature: They like above-average
warmth. If the temperature drops below
60 degrees, or the plant is exposed to cold
drafts, it is likely to lose lower leaves
and gain a “palm” effect.
The Philodendron genus contains
some of the most beautiful foliage plants
in the plant kingdom. Native to the tropical Americas, there are several hundred
species of philodendrons. Indoors, there
are two basic types of philodendrons: the
climbing varieties and the self-heading,
or non-climbing, types. In the wild, some
of these plants can grow into massive,
tree-swallowing specimens, but indoors
they aren’t nearly so vigorous. Newer
hybrids have mixed the vigor and ease
of the hanging varieties with the convenience of the self-heading varieties.
Growing Conditions: Light: Dappled, bright light, as in a tropical canopy.
They can be acclimated to nearly direct sunlight in the right conditions,
but they thrive in light shade. Water:
Keep compost moist at all times and
mist frequently during the growing
season. Push aerial roots into the soil
on climbing varieties. Temperature:
Variable, but no philodendron likes
going below about 55ºF for long. Soil:
Rich, loose potting media. Use a moss
stick or other support for the climbing
types. Fertilizer: Slow-release pellets
in the beginning of the growing season
or weekly liquid fertilizer.

Gift of Gifts
On a winter’s night
With snow so deep
A family lays in anxious sleep
For the day that is about to dawn
Is the day that saw a Savior born
Beneath their tree the gifts are few
But what is there will surely do
For in that house is an abiding love
Between each within and for God above
A love not shaken by the lack of wealth
But blessed many times by the gift of health
A bond not weakened by time nor it’s test
For this family knows that by God they’ve been blessed
When through the windows pour the first rays of day
Its to church they travel to sing and to pray
Tis then they are witness to God and His love
Because for all there is a gift from above
A gift of a babe His only Son
He is there! He is there!
He is there in a manger
He has given us each other
and keeps us from danger
To our house this year may He not be a stranger

Blessed Trinity
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
Blessed Trinity Holy Name Society Meeting 12/12/2010, Kudos to the members
braving the wind and rain on Sunday morning after the 8:30 Mass. Msgr. Curran
& Fr. Gribbon were in attendance. Joe Miller gave his usual exemplary financial
report. Tom Mitchell gave a report on re-cooperation progress of Fr Gribbon,
John Mahoney, John Carr and John Kanty. Msgr. spoke on subjects such as the
media treatment of Parrish reconfigurations as well as progress on the “Msgr.
Connolly Center Hall” .He addressed the problem of large scale demographic
changes in local neighborhoods.
Peter Purpura spoke eloquently on the Stewardship committee and the members
who are taking up the mantel, namely Tom Concannon and Bob Ahern. He also
mentioned that the excess in the 2010 Financial report is already committed to
programs in progress such as the parish hall. The annual appeal funds were down
by 15% which in this environment is understandable but it impacts the financial
aspects going forward. The next meeting is February 13, 2011.
Deacon Lee led the closing prayer.
From Tom, Joe and myself a Happy, Holy, Healthy and Kindly Christmas to
all. Remember the other. Be kind to yourself.
Peace
Bill B.
Queens Republican Party
(Continued from Page 26)
According to Chairman Ragusa,
“When the New York Times cites in a
story “80,000 uncounted ballots found in
Queens,” we must make serious inquiries
into what is happening. It calls into question
the reliability and integrity of the entire
electoral process. When we couple this
with the myriad of complaints we’ve heard,
from the size of the print on the ballot to
far too many anecdotes about problems in
the voting process, we have to stand up and
proclaim this unacceptable in the greatest
democratic government in history.”
“Against the backdrop of the recent
termination of the NYCBOE’s Democratic Executive Director for insubordination and possible ballot tampering
related to a Queens special election,
it really is a matter of grave concern,”
Ragusa continued. “If there is some element of fraud, we are prepared to call for
an investigation and, if need be, we will
file suit. Additionally, to the extent our
Republican BOE personnel can identify
discrepancies, failures and problems
rooted in the election law, we will call
for appropriate legislative action.”
With Sincerest Best Wishes
for a Merry Christmas
and a Happy, Healthy and
Prosperous New Year

A Sunday Bible School for Children will begin 9 January at 11:30am.
Through stories, activities and music,
children will learn how to apply key
life lessons presented in classic Bible
stories. For example,
• Noah’s Ark and the importance
of keeping promises
• The Good Samaritan and why
we care for others
• Building a House upon Rock and
how to make good choices
• The Importance of giving and
receiving Forgiveness, seventy times
seven
• Jesus washing the disciples feet,
and Humility
We will be grateful for expressions of interest from the parents of
children ages 6-12; to call Pauleen at
1-718-634-8222, to aid our planning
of this program.
Update
At Vacation Bible School in August
the children prepared ‘God Loves Me’
blankets for shipment in February to
impoverished children in India through
Friends of Christ in India, a charity with
long experience there. Between now
and the time the blankets will be taken
to India, a group will knit or crochet
additional wraps and floor mats for
the children to sleep on or for use in
hospitals before and after treatment.
Many children sleep on straw palettes,
with and without cover, where a thick
knitted mat will bring some comfort. If
you are interested in knitting, crocheting or learning to do either of these,
or to donate yarn, contact Pauleen at
1-718-634-8222.
Last Sunday
The Third Sunday of Advent – Our
own Bill Schwick spoke to us of his
recent reading of a portion of the story
of Elijah and Ahab [1 Kings 17-20]
and the need to deliberately take time
to listen to God speak to us if we are to
hear and understand His most important
messages. God wants to help us through
life, and we have a responsibility to
devote time and attention to God to
enable that relationship to flourish.
Now, there is good reason to believe that God can and does speak to
us at any time and under any circumstance [“...and the Kingdom of God is
at hand... ” Mark 1:14-15]. Sometimes
God chooses to get our attention by
having something happen other than
what we wanted or expected, and
‘pushing our button’ in the process.
It is a good bet that, when we experience our button being pushed, God’s
hand is behind the pushing, in an
attempt to wake us from an illusion
we are living. Other times may be
under extreme circumstances, leading
to expressions similar to, “There are

no atheists in foxholes!” I’ve never
heard of anyone who doesn’t have a
few ‘hot buttons’ nor did I ever meet
someone in a war zone who didn’t
ask for God’s protection.
In Elijah’s case, God chose to
first send a “...great and strong wind
tore into the mountains and broke the
rocks in pieces... and after the wind an
earthquake... and after the earthquake
a fire,...” And Elijah seems to have not
heard these. But then, the Lord spoke
to Elijah in a “...still small voice.” And
Elijah heard it.
Bill reminded us that, as we go
about the business and ‘busy-ness’ of
our lives and face the daily headwinds,
‘earthquakes’ and ‘fires’ of making our
way through jobs, school, financial
pressures, health issues, conflict in
relationships and similar; we need
to stop and listen for His still small
voice speaking to us. Sometimes,
as in Elijah’s case, God will ask us
“What are you doing here, Elijah?”
And we will be able to express to God

our fears, just as Elijah did [1 Kings
19:14]. Then we can be ready to hear
God guide us in our next steps.
At the same time, there will be
‘voices’ attempting to distract us from
hearing God’s voice or from following His guidance. Ahab ranked with
David and Solomon as the greatest
of Israel’s kings. Yet he had Jezebel,
his wife, steadily working to distract
him from hearing and obeying God as
conveyed to him through Elijah. There
are great penalties in this life and the
next for failing to hear and abide by
God’s instructions. Similarly, commercial entertainment and the attractions of our affluent, secular culture,
all compete to distract us from god’s
word, as did Jezebel and her ‘prophets’
of Baal. You may have heard it said,
“The road to hell is paved with good
intentions.” This is not so; in truth, the
road to hell is paved with distractions
from good intentions.
Since it often becomes difficult
during the course of our busy days
to randomly stop our personal metronome to commune with God, it
helps to have a regular appointment
with Him to do so. That way it is in
our plan; scheduled and expected,
like dinner and the evening news. A
great time for this is first thing in the
morning, before our mind is cluttered
by the days events. What a great time
to ask for God’s guidance for the coming day and for strength to avoid or
resist the distractions from our good
intentions!
God loves you and wants a close,
regular, personal relationship with
you. Your responsibility is to choose
to enable this to happen by devoting
time to nurturing your relationship
with God and preventing distractions
from leading you astray.

First Saint Rose Christmas Tree Lighting
The Christmas Season is a time to
remember our loved ones, living and
deceased. This year St. Rose of Lima had
its First Annual Christmas Tree Lighting,
after the 5:00 PM mass on Saturday. Over
50 Parishioners braving the cold winter
weather sang Christmas Carols and
Hymns led by Grace Matubis. Monsi-
gnor James Spengler led the Parishioners
in Prayer and Blessed the Christmas Tree
and introduced the new Intention Prayer
Board with names of love ones. The tree
was lit for the intentions for those listed
on the Board. A guest appearance was
made by Santa Claus, hot chocolate and
cookies were served.
