Like the Amazon , the AA Way is full of twists turns dead ends and loops
“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes.
Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality.
Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” ― Lao Tzu

In 1984 I had a 3 month
Research leave at INS
Tokyo to work with
Date and Sumiyoshi on
Baryon stopping power
In PA and AA
In 1991 we analyzed Shoji's
E802 data and concluded
“none of the present models which
assume complete nuclear stopping
and none of the present
nonequilibrium string models are
consistent with the published E802
spectroineter data for central Si+Au
reactions. “
multicomponent models showed
nuclear stopping lengths of 17—26 fm
were much larger than the
lengths of 8—10 fm
Deduced from earlier p+A data
Later Au+Au 1994 data also confirmed
Lack of complete Landau stopping

A+A was proposed to study novel forms of matter by Lee-Wick and Greiner et al 1974
Bjorken proposed boost invariant hydro 1982 to replace Landau's 1950 full stopping hydro
RHIC @ BNL proposed in 1982 after the very lucky (for nuclear science) demise of ISABELLE
1983 NSAC Long Range Plan identified RHIC@BNL as top priority construction project
Over LamphII (that has since 1997 been resurrected as J-PARC thanks to Shoji)

ρ B ~ (Λ QCD )3 ~10 ρ0
Shoji became 1st spokesman of PHENIX design project in 1991
And used E802 @AGS to created highest baryon density matter

The RHIC Planning Team at BNL
Shoji was too busy planning detectors and experiments to be in this picture
MGyulassy 7/16/14 Shoji70
15
Shoji, I, and 1000 others rapidly jumped onto this new ring of Physics
MGyulassy 7/16/14 Shoji70

The task was to map out and compare the physics of the Big and Little Bangs
Slide from T. Hadsuda
Theory of Little AA Bangs is made harder by TOO much data pp , pA, AA @ s ~ 1 -108 AGeV2
that leave TOO little room to speculate and wiggle out of inconsistencies with experiments
MGyulassyof7/16/14
Shoji70is harder because way TOO many local minima of SuperString Landscape 17
Theory
Big Bangs
S.Bass' Cartoon of physics components that must be theoretically controlled
to enable unambiguous interpretation of high energy A+A data
MGyulassy 7/16/14 Shoji70
But how do theoretical uncertainties in each step propagate?
Can we de-convolute the data tsunami to isolate and test each step?
18
Shoji was instrumental in creating not only world class AA experiments at Bevalac AGS and RHIC
But he also played a critical role with TD Lee, Arima, Samios to
create the Riken-BNL-Research-Center (RBRC) for Theory and Exp

Shoji is not here because he accepted a much bigger
challenge in 1997 to lead KEK toward J-PARC that is
now a reality due to his skill and dedication

I owe my deepest professional thanks to Shoji-sensei who in 1992 as chair of Physics@CU
recruited me to move from LBNL to Columbia University

We have lost p+A as a Null Control experiment!

At Quark Matter May 2014, I asked
Is Perfect Fluidity of the sQGP necessary in light of recent
BES & D+Au & p+Au data from RHIC and LHC ?
Perfect fluidity is certainly sufficient to fit all A+A and even p+A, data !
But is it necessary, i.e., is it a unique property of sQGP or a conspiracy
of multiple effects at least in P+A and low energies that have yet to be
clarified?
Our current work in progress is to evaluate pQCD color bremsstrahlung
interference phenomena from multiple beam jet color antenna arrays
that could possible solve the current BES+DA+pA apparent flow puzzles

Are observed few GeV dihadron azimuthal correlations due to
pQCD Color Bremsstrahlung or Lumpy CGC hydrodynamic response,
Or AdS/CFT shock waves ?
or a combination of above ?

Quark Matter 2014 was a turning point for me along the “Way” of
Interpreting AA
1) The Case for Perfect Fluidity and CGC/Glasma Sufficiency
for Flow Harmonics in Non-central A+A as of QM12
2) There is trouble with Necessity of Fluidity since 2012
a) Beam Energy independence
b) p(D)+A = A+A v2 and v3 Beam size independence
c) large rapidity even v1 Dipole in both pA and AA
3) Is Perfect Fluidity really Necessary ??
Could vn in B+A be partly Nonabelian Wave interference?
(see also QM14 talks by Venugopalan , Dusling, Schenke... & poster of Biro, Schram)
My current heretical working hypothesis is Yes: arXiv:1405.7825 [hep-ph]
If true, this will increase eta/s estimates from vn harmonic data
analysis and ratio may converge closer to our 1985 pQCD eta/s~ 1
predictions that is also consistent with recent jet quenching
phenomenology*
