Principal’s Report
We are having a great term with lots of learning and successful activities happening. I do apologise for the many
issues parents and students experienced with the yo-yos. The messages Never Give Up, Encourage Others and Do
Your Best were fantastic but not so the quality of the yo-yos. Not quite the same as the ‘Coca-Cola’ ones many of
us had as children! Next week is Book Week and we will be doing lessons in the library during RFF with the
nominated books. We will also hold a Book Sale but will not be sharing the books with the students. This is
because we know that parents then get pressured to buy. So this year we will set up the library like a book shop
and parents can come and purchase with or without the children. It will be open on Monday 22 August 8am –
4.30pm. A great opportunity to purchase some surprise gifts.
Our change over to the new system – LMBR is on track to ‘Go Live’ early next term. We have been told that it
would be best to finalise any events prior to this date that we have started, in terms of the finances. Our school
camp and swimming scheme are two such events. We are seeking finalisation of payments for these two events
by 16 September. We realise this is very soon but would really appreciate if parents could assist our office in
regards to this matter.
Kind regards Mrs Potter

Trivia Night
Congratulations to our hardworking P&C who once again put on a night to remember. The Rio Olympics theme
provided some wonderful costume opportunities and the games that we played were very entertaining. It truly
highlighted the creativity of some of our parents when a missing question turned into a catwalk of laughs. Thank
you to the many local companies and businesses who supported the evening by providing wonderful prizes and
items for the Silent Auction. Our school was very fortunate to have McGrath Real Estate Thirroul also support us
with a wonderful opportunity. Many thanks to Trever Molenaar and his team and to the Coledale Surf Club a huge
thank you, once again allowing us to use their facilities to host our evening. Well done to everybody involved!
Education Week Wollongong North Network – Teacher Recognition Awards
Our Director Ms. Debbie Lowe hosted the Wollongong North Network Recognition Awards during Education
Week. Her aim was to celebrate the achievements and commitment of dedicated staff, working to improve the
quality of public education in schools. At Coledale Public School anyone of our team would be a worthy recipient
but our supportive collegial staff voted for our School Learning Support Officer – Joanne Chilton to receive the
award. We would like to acknowledge the leadership of Joanne in coordinating our Kitchen / Garden program.
Her never ending efforts in ensuring the students, teachers and parents are involved. We also recognise the many
extra things she does to make our whole school environment much more appealing. Congratulations Mrs Chilton.
Debating
On Tuesday the 16th of August Coledale PS competed against Scarborough PS debating the topic “the best things
in life are free”. Arguing for the Affirmative Team was Hadin O’Donnell, Milla Goss Maher, Abeni Golding and
Flynn Mason. At the conclusion of the debate the adjudicators commended it was a close affair. They went on to
say it was the best debate they have witnessed this year and that all the constructive feedback from previous
weeks had been evident in all of the team speeches. Unfortunately it came down to the quality of the rebuttals
and Scarborough finished the debate strongly with their 3rd speaker. The next debate will be on Tuesday the 23rd
of August at Otford were will be arguing against Helensburgh.
School Planning
Thank you to the parents that came along to our Parent Forum last week. It was great to hear your input and
share with you how our school plan implementation is progressing. We are well placed at this point in time and
feel we are making improvements with many aspects of providing a quality education for all our students..
Tell Them From Me
TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT SURVEY Just a reminder that students in Years 4-6 will be participating in the Tell
Them From Me survey during this term. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this survey, you will
need to return the form to school. Later in the term, we will be asking parents to also complete, a Partners in
Learning parent survey. The information obtained from the parent survey will be a vital part of the school
planning process.
SCHOOL PARENTS
Our school has created a school page on schoolparents.com which will be a private place for our school to post
reminders, information and celebrate achievements. It will be similar to other social media sites such as Facebook
but only for the members of the Coledale PS Community. At this stage we would like parents to join up. As we get
acquainted with the site we will use it to share more and more. Parents can also have private messages to each
other to enable play dates to be arranged. Like most social media please be mindful of the posts that you make
and always remember to show respect and consider others. Why not log on to www.schoolparents.com.au and
sign up now.

Illawarra 200 Shared values, Shared future
On Monday we had the honor of receiving the Illawarra 200 shared values, Shared Future Medal Presented by
Councillor Jill Merrin.
In 1815 some of the Illawarra’s traditional custodians led some white settlers and their cattle down the
escarpment. The settlers began to farm the area – a place rich in red cedar trees, farmland and coal. This marked
a new chapter in the story of our area, and it’s this new direction that we’re commemorating 200 years on.
The trek down the escarpment by white settlers and traditional custodians is represented in the Illawarra 200
logo by the white dots. The colourful ribbons that form the lines of our escarpment represent the ongoing
settlement of the Illawarra by people from across the globe. The logo also celebrates our local flora, with Illawarra
Flame Tree blossoms placed in the pattern of the Southern Cross. The number of flowers symbolises the first five
land grants handed out in 1816 and the iconic Five Islands off our coast.
TOM (Tournament of Minds) TEAM
Best of luck to our TOM Team who will complete their challenge this Sunday at the University of Wollongong. I
would like to wish them well in this event and hope they enjoy the experience. It is our first year of providing this
opportunity for our students and they have been very dedicated to the challenge giving up many lunch times and
before school time to prepare. Many thanks to Ms. Gould who has also been willing to dedicate lots of time and
energy to ensure it is a successful activity, especially for the talented team of Hadin, Ava, Ella, Bianca, Isabella,
Olivia and Ivy. Smile and enjoy the event!
SPORTS REPORT
District Athletics
Congratulations to all our athletes who competed at the District Athletics carnival on Monday and Wednesday.
Our talented Coledale students performed extremely well individually and as a team. Over the two days many
students achieved personal bests in their events and we are very proud of all of them.
Successful students will now represent the District at the Regional Carnival to be held at Bruce Stadium, Canberra
on Friday 2nd September .
We were rewarded with fantastic weather on both days of the District Carnival, held over two days at Beaton Park
last week. The wet weather the previous week disrupted training for this big event but the kids rose to the
occasion and performed well. We always need to remind ourselves about the strength of this district in terms of
sporting prowess. The children were a credit to themselves and the school over the two day event, displaying
exemplary behaviour and a keen, spirited attitude.
Once again we had an entourage of supportive parents cheering the children on. These days are very special and
rewarding for whole school community – children, parents, relations and friends. Thank you to everyone who
turned up to support their children and the school. For me, it’s one of the many highlights of the school year.

Olympic Day
Audrey Angel 4/5G
Last Friday the 12th of August the year 5’s held and Olympic sport day. Everyone in our class were partnered up
with another student, my partner was Skye. The activity
Skye and I did was a gymnastics obstacle course.
You jump on the trampoline, jump through the hoops,
crawl through the tunnel, jump over the hurdles and kick the soccer ball
around the witches hats. There was lots of different groups came to our activities
there were k-2 groups and 3-6 groups some groups were a lot better behaved than others. Every group was a
different country but the group that won was Bahamas. I think they deserved it. By the time it was all over
everyone was really tired.
Over all I think the Olympic day was really fun and I hope in 4 years time our school will do it again.
PSSA
PSSA will be held this Friday. The boys will be involved in soccer at Gibson Park, Thirroul while the girls will be
playing netball at Bulli H.S and Woniora P.S. The children will need to wear full sports uniform and bring plenty of
water to drink.
The boys wear joggers and long socks and not soccer boots. If they have shin pads, they need to bring them along.
The bus will be leaving at 12.15pm and returning at home time. Please ensure that notes and money are due in
Thursday.
Swimming Scheme
Notes have been sent out to years 2 and 3. If you are interested in sending your child please return note and
money by Tuesday 23rd August. Notes will then be handed out to years 4 and 5,places are available by first in best
dress as there are only 60 places.
SOUTHERN STARS EXCURSION
The Southern Stars performance for K-6 students will take place on Friday 26th August. 30 students have secured
tickets for this excursion. This excursion is a specific performance for school groups in the Wollongong District
only. This is why the special reduced prices have been offered. Therefore it is for students only. If you wish to
attend a performance as a family, there are performances on Friday and Saturday, please contact Ticketmaster
for full details and bookings. I thoroughly recommend the performance to all families – it is brilliant to witness
what is possible for our talented Public School students. Students attending should all wear their sports uniform
and bring along a small bag to take as normal school bags will not be permitted.

Premiers Spelling Challenge
Congratulations to all our students from years 3‐6 for their participation In our annual school Spelling Bee. The
standard was high and what really impressed me was how willing students were to take a risk and have a go.
Special congratulations go to Ella Keers and Summer Cahill for winning Stage 3 and Ivy McIntosh and Bianca
Straub for winning the stage 2 competition. All four students go on to represent our school at the regional final at
Austinmer PS on 21st September.
“The Spelling Bee was hard at first but afterwards you might be surprised of how easy it was. The Kids who
participate in stage 3 were Ella K, Toby, Ava R, Summer, Ella P, Holly Haisman, and Matthew Sheath. These lucky
and hard working kids made it through to the school Spelling Bee these kids made it pass the class Spelling Bee.
But unfortunately only two could get in to the regional spelling Bee, those two lucky winners were Ella K and
Summer. These two kids were thrilled and excited. They are now going to Austinmer school on the 21st of
September to represent the school. Come and support these two kids and make sure to congratulate the others 6,
they all worked hard to get there. I had fun and at the same time it was really nerve-racking. I cannot wait to go to
Austinmer to represent our school with Summer. The other schools better watch out, the Coledale kids are
coming.”
Ella Keers, 4/5G
“On Monday it was Coledale’s Spell Off! There were only 6 kids and lots of hard words like ‘Hyprochondria’ the
Kids that made it through were obviously good spellers they were Bianca and Ivy they will go on to the next stage
at Austi school and we hope they will go well at the next stage. “
Lenny 4/5G
Have you seen the ‘Windows of Merit’ in A Block?
A new initiative this year has been set up in the corridor near the office and Year 2. This ‘Windows of Merit’
recognises the students that have achieved either, a Bronze, Silver, Gold or our highest level of achievement
Platinum certificate. Student’s photos are placed on the appropriate level. It has been wonderful to see the
enthusiasm and pride that the students are taking in seeing their photo . At this stage we have 77 students who
have received their bronze certificate. If you are one of those students that have not brought in your three or five
certificates, please bring them in so that you can be recognised for your achievements. Parents, next time you are
at school, please take a look.

Voluntary Contributions
Each year our school seeks the support of families through a General School Voluntary Contribution. This
contribution will be used to supplement educational resources and programs. It is vital for the ongoing day to day
needs of the school that we continue to have the support of parents in this way.
The payment of the General School Contribution is voluntary. The funds generated by the General School
Voluntary Contribution will be used to support quality educational programs and may be supplemented by other
school activities and funds raised by the P & C. These funds are used for things such as literacy and numeracy
resources, and essential items for everyday use in the classroom.
The General School Voluntary Contribution for 2016 is $40.00 per child or $70.00 per family.
Premier's Reading Challenge and Book Week
This Friday at 11.59pm the PRC (Premier's Reading Challenge) closes for students. This means that students in
years 3 to 6 will need to ensure that their online reading record shows as complete prior to this date. To update
their reading record online, students can go to the PRC through their DEC Portal. If they have any problems Mrs
Bartlett and I are more than willing to help them, they just need to ask. Once the students have completed the
challenge, teachers will be able to validate their records and students will receive a PRC certificate. Students in
Kindergarten to Year 2 will have their books entered by classroom teachers as the books are read aloud by
teachers to the students in these grades.
Next week we are celebrating Book Week with lessons about some of the Children's Book Council of Australia
awards finalist books. There will also be a Book Sale from Scholastic in the library next Monday from 8-4.30pm
parents and friends are most welcome to come along and purchase some of the wonderful books. Please return
any overdue library books and remind your child to return library books on their library day each week. Please see
