January 21, 2015 - White Memorial Presbyterian Church
Volume XLIX January 21, 2015 No. 3
Notice of Thanks and Praise
Near the center of the Christian life is the urgent joyfulness of thanksgiving and
praise. Blessings left unacknowledged are devalued. Accomplishments not praised are
opportunities missed. If indeed it is true that all of our lives are lived through God’s gifts
and God’s grace, then every opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of others is a
way of celebrating the activity of God in their lives and our world.
For many years, our dear friends Art Ross and Martha Stevenson have faithfully served
the church and our Lord. Of all the many people to whom we are indebted for the fine
history and reach of our congregation, we are perhaps most indebted to Art and Martha.
As pastor and as church educator respectively, they helped White Memorial grow into
the ministry it is today. We worship, embrace and serve upon a foundation they dedicated
themselves to construct and sustain. While Art and Martha each retired some time ago,
they both remain active and vital parts of our faith community today.
Thanking God for their collective ministries, we will recognize them in worship on
February 8 at 11:00 a.m. and will grant them the honorary titles of Pastor Emeritus and
Educator Emerita. While these titles are honorific (much like an honorary degree from a
college or university), they are at the same time a public and important acknowledgement
of thanksgiving. They are a chance to praise God for Art and Martha and for what God
accomplished through them and with them in their service to Christ’s church. We’ll
follow 11:00 a.m. worship with a reception in the Jane Bell Gathering Space to which all
are invited.
Worship Sunday, January 25,
Third Sunday after Epiphany
at 8:15, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m.
Sermon:
The Gospel in Seven Verses
Scripture:
Jonah 3:1-5; Mark 1:14-20
Hymns:
God of the Sparrow
Jesus Calls Us
Praise My Soul the King of Heaven

White Memorial Presbyterian Church
P.S. One of the joys of being at White Memorial is that our congregation is a place of
talented and accomplished folks. Not a month goes by when we do not have a member
inducted into a hall of fame or recognized with a scholarship or service award. We have
members who hold elected offices–John Alexander, Roy Cooper, and Gary Pendleton–
and we have members appointed to the most important educational boards in our state–
Doyle Parrish and Tricia Willoughby. From time to time, we have members and friends
recognized for lifetime or career achievements. In the last weeks of 2014 it came to my
attention that Forrest Lasso was elected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America (NSCAA) All-America Team. Forrest is a senior at Wofford College, and this
selection culminates a “lifetime” of dedication to soccer. We also learned that Marilyn
Hein, who is involved at White Memorial on multiple levels even in her retirement, was
honored by the Association of Presbyterian Christian Educators (APCE) with the 2015
Lifetime Achievement in Christian Education Award. This is a tremendous recognition of
Marilyn and her dedication to our church as an educator, pastor and leader.
As of January 19,
we have received
923 pledges for a total
of $3,378,353.
Thank you for your support
of WMPC.

Is a White Memorial Friend or
Relative in the Hospital?
Please call the church office to let us
know of relatives and friends who are in
the hospital so that our pastoral staff may
visit them. Due to HIPAA regulations,
hospitals do not inform us when a
member is hospitalized (even though a
request for your church affiliation may
appear on the admissions form.) We print
members’ names in this newsletter and on
our hospital board at church so we may
pray for them. Please tell us if you or a
relative do not want your name included;
otherwise, we will follow our usual
practice. Contact Susan Roberts at ext.
210 during business hours. After business
hours, the pastor on call pager number is
919-605-4593.
Bereavement Care Team
The Bereavement Care Team reaches
out to those who have lost loved ones.
A team is on call one month per year to
offer a meal, greet visitors and stay in the
home during the Service of Witness to
the Resurrection. Call Jean Williams or
Cynthia White to join this team.
Friendly Visitors Needed
Be a Friendly Visitor to a church member
who is homebound or living in a care
facility! Contact Lindsay Jordan at
919-834-3425, ext. 220, to be linked with
someone to visit monthly.
Birth Announcements
Sometimes, due to short hospital stays and
weekend births, we miss finding out about
our “new Presbyterians.” Call Rebecca
Turner at 919-834-3425, ext. 222, if you
have a new baby.
Your Attention Please
Weight Watchers
WMPC holds Weight Watchers “At-Work”
meetings on Thursdays from 6:30-7:00
p.m., with weigh-in beginning at 6:00 p.m.

member to attend. On January 22, there
will be an Open House for those interested
in joining. Weight Watchers provides two
cookbooks to be raffled. If you are interested,
you can attend one meeting for free. There
will be information at the meetings on how
to sign up for Weight Watchers Monthly
Pass which allows a member to attend the
weekly meetings and have access to Weight
Watcher online resources, which includes
recipes and other online support. The cost for
a Monthly Pass is $39.95 payable by credit
card. If you cannot attend the Open House,
you can attend any other meeting to obtain
information.
Meeting topics:
• January 22: Party without Panic - There
are external triggers all around that

can enjoy the party and stay on Plan.

Help with Grief
WMPC offers occasional Grief Workshops
to help you name and address your grief.
These workshops provide an opportunity
to learn about grief and to give and
receive support in the company of others
experiencing grief. The next Grief Workshop
will meet on three Mondays (February 9,
16 and 23) from noon-1:00 p.m. in W303.
Please register by contacting Lisa Hebacker
at 919-834-3425, ext. 208, or
[email protected].
Winter Retreat
On Saturday, February 28, from 8:30 a.m.
until noon, learn more about vocation at our
2015 Winter Retreat. This year’s speaker
is Wayne Meisel, director of the Center for
Faith and Service at McCormick Theological
Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. Vocation
is the universal call to discipleship that all
Christians share and is a particular call that
God speaks to each of us in our unique lives.
In Parker Palmer’s book Let Your Life Speak,
Palmer says, “Before you tell your life what
you intend to do with it, listen to what it
intends to do with you.” The retreat costs
$11 per person, which includes breakfast.
Childcare is available with reservations. For
details, to read Wayne’s bio or to register,
visit whitememorial.org/winter-retreat.
Contact Tracey Daniel at
[email protected] or
919-834-3425, ext. 247, with questions.

Help Wanted, Service and Mission
Russia Sewing Group
The Russia Sewing Group will meet on
January 26 (the fourth Monday, due to the
third Monday being MLK, Jr. Day holiday).
Bring your sewing machine and supplies to
C200 at 9:30 a.m. to make fabric bags for
orphans in Smolensk. We will fill the bags
with coloring books and crayons, which
our partner church in Russia will distribute.
Fabric and instructions are provided. We sew
for about three hours and then enjoy a light
lunch. If you are joining the group for the
first time, contact Ellen Bennett at
[email protected] so that we can
count you in for lunch and answer questions.
January is National Soup Month
January is National Soup Month, so stock
up for the food pantries. Soup makes a
warm meal, and those that have meat are
especially needed. Place cans in the crate
in the Connector.
Recycle Your Eyeglasses
Please donate eyeglasses (prescription,
readers, sunglasses and cases). First
Presbyterian Church in Raleigh will share
the glasses during an upcoming medical
mission trip to Bolivia. A collection box is
in the Connector.
Girl’s Night Out
The Presbyterian Women invite you for
entertainment and fun on Monday, February
9, at 6:00 p.m. in Pickard Hall! Entertainment
will be provided by the Cary Youth
Chorale. Make reservations online or by
contacting Tonya Higgins at the church
office. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for
children 8 and under. Send checks, payable to
WMPC, to Cynthia Smith. Payment must be
received by Friday, February 6.

Extra-large sized sweatshirts are needed
for those who are outside in the cold.

in W307. We hope to get 300 to pass out
to the homeless. Contact Steve Coker at
[email protected] with questions.
Medical Equipment Exchange
One of the services of White Memorial
Presbyterian Church’s Health Ministry is
to connect members who need medical
equipment with those who have the
equipment to lend or give where needed.
If you would like to list your equipment
for use or if you need items such as
crutches, bath benches, walkers or bedside
commodes, contact Carolyn Elliott.
Martha Ministry Volunteers Needed

transportation when events have seriously
interrupted daily household functioning in
WMPC families. We continue to need new
volunteers to occasionally prepare a meal or
drive someone for a medical appointment.

Exactly 25 years ago, the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from
a single youth group: “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help
us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat.” Since then, more than $100
million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl
of Caring. The movement is transforming the time around Super Bowl weekend
into the nation’s largest celebration of giving and serving. Join the WMPC youth
and share God’s love with those in need. Consider giving this Super Bowl Sunday,
February 1, to support Souper Bowl of Caring. Every dollar donated will go to
Urban Ministries Food Pantry. For more information on Souper Bowl of Caring,
