Take a Stand for Turning Point

STAR 105.5 FM radio kicked off
the 11th Annual Radiothon for Turning Point early Friday morning, August 12. The live broadcast begins
with Joe Cicero and Tina Bree at the
Sage YMCA in Crystal Lake, IL.
Turning Point is McHenry County’s only domestic violence agency.
“We are trying to promote the services that Turning Point provides
to victims of domestic violence and
their families,” says Jane Farmer,
executive director for Turning Point.
“We served 1759 clients last year
alone. It’s a very under-reported
crime, yet we have these huge numbers.”
“This radiothon is an open event.
It will last 36 hours. It is up to the
community to come by, call STAR
105.5 or to stop by and bring a
check. No check is too small. It all
helps victims of domestic violence.”
“It’s crucial that we host this radiothon this year because the state
has put together a stopgap budget
and that is only for six months. I just
want everyone to come out and make
a difference with Turning Point and
STAR 105.5. There are lots of activities out here: food, henna painting,
blood donations. Savers has a big
truck for anything that people want
to get rid of,” Farmer continues.

It’s become a familiar sight – men standing in intersections, collecting donations and
handing out candy. They are no panhandlers,
they are clearly identifiable as members of
the Lions Club. They go out every year, carefully treading that center line at intersections
in order to raise money to benefit the local
community.
In Union, Candy Days coincide with ‘A
Day Out With Thomas’ the Tank Engine
weekends at the Illinois Railway Museum.
People from miles around converge on this
area.
“People are generous,” says Reverend
Frank Szewczyk, president of the Union Lions Club. “They give and they smile and they
are happy to help. They are not just people
from Union, but from all over. They stop.
They help. It’s great.”
The Lions Club is the world’s largest service organization. “Our members do whatever is needed to help their local communities. Everywhere we work, we make friends.
With children who need eyeglasses, with seniors who don’t have enough to eat, and with
people we may never meet.” Says the Lions
Club. “We work on projects to improve our
communities and protect the environment.”
One of the things the Lions Club is best
known for is the efforts they make on behalf
of the blind and those with sight issues. This
mission began in 1925 with an appeal from
Helen Keller where she challenged them to
become “knights of the blind in the crusade
against darkness.” To this day, they continue
to assist young to old with sight correction of
all types.
They perform free eye screenings on small
children. The Lions’ Kidsight program focuses on children aged six months to six years
because their vision develops rapidly and any
vision problems can become permanent by
age seven. Many of these screenings can be
done at events such as the Union Lions’ pancake breakfasts which are held as fundraisers
to assist someone in the community.
The Lions collect unused eyeglasses to be
refurbished and made available to someone
who may not be able to afford them. They do
the same thing with hearing aids, refurbishing them and making them available to those
in need.
The district of which the Union Lions
Club is a part, District 1-J, has received three
grants in the last few months. These grants
are to be used for eye testing equipment,
spot-screening machines and for Diabetes
Testing Awareness.
The Union Lions Club members are
friendly, caring people who are making a difference, helping members of the community,
and protecting the environment. “The money
we raise will be used for general projects in
this area,” says Rev. Frank. We try to help
those who need it with a focus towards sight,
hearing and diabetes.”
A free brat/sweet corn lunch for members of the community on August 27, behind
Checkers II in Union, located at 6524 Main
St. It is intended as a gesture of thanks for
everyone in the community which supports
the Lions’ efforts.
The Union Lions Club meets once a month
for a business dinner. Further information

“I think it takes a community to
come together to support Turning
Point and this event is a great way to
get involved,” says Farmer.
Activities also include face painting, police dog demonstrations, live
musical entertainment, magicians,
dance groups, a youth Mariachi
band, games; and popular fictional
characters in costume, such as the
Grinch.
2016 Miss Prairie State Jori Parys is at the Sage YMCA to support
Turning Point. “In June, I competed
in the Miss Illinois Pageant heading
towards the Miss America Pageant.
My platform with Miss America is
self-esteem. I speak out on the importance of having high self-esteem.
All of our biggest issues in society
can be traced to perpetrators with
poor self-esteem,” Parys tells me.
“I won the Overall Talent Award for

Confronting violence against
women and children in McHenry
County, Turning Point has walk-in
services in Woodstock and an overnight shelter which houses women
and children escaping abusive relationships. Turning Point also
maintains an office in the McHenry
County Courthouse to help victims
of abuse obtain orders of protection
and restraining orders.

violence shelter in McHenry County.”

Algonquin native receives
silver medal at Olympics

Evan Jager, a 2007 graduate of
Henry D. Jacob’s High School in
Algonquin, has been hard at work
training for the 2016 Olympics
for some time. His efforts were rewarded when we placed second in
the 3,000 steeplechase to receive the
silver medal. The event was Jager’s
second Olympics competition: he
also raced in the event in 2012 where
he placed sixth. With this year’s feat,
Jager became the first American man
to medal in the event in over three
decades. The last American to medal
in the 3,000 steeplechase did so in
1984.
Jager’s 3,000 steeplechase event
took place at 8:25 a.m. local time
on Wed. Aug 17. While Jager was
preparing in Rio to compete for
the most important race of his life,
friends and community members
gathered to support Jager’s efforts
at Buffalo Wild Wings, watching his
race on the big screens throughout
the establishment. He was passed in
the last lap for a shot at the gold, but
finished strong with a time of 8 minutes 4.28 seconds. The feat came after years of hard work and struggles
in previous races.
Last year Jager finished second
in the race at the Paris Diamond
League after a tough fall on the last
barrier. He also struggled during the
world championships in Beijing and
finished sixth in that race. This year
his focus and efforts were able to
yield him better overall results and a
place in history. He ran the Olympic
race with a certain level of calm that
allowed him to leap over 28 hurdles
and clear seven water jumps with a
seeming ease. His performance and
his time were noteworthy. The only
person to ever complete the race in
a shorter time was the gold medalist, Conseslus Kipruto from Kenya,
finishing exactly one second sooner
at 8 minutes 3.28 seconds.
Jager, Kipruto, and Ezekiel Kemboi, also from Kenya, were early
frontrunners throughout the race.
Kemboi was disqualified as the
judges docked him for cutting a
corner during the race, otherwise
he would have received the bronze
medal for the event. The three were
noticeably breaking ahead with four
laps left. Congratulations to Evan
on his incredible feat and for bringing a silver medal home not only for
the U.S.A. but also for McHenry
County!

Stroll and Market, a self-guided tour
of the county’s diversified family
farms. A total of 12 farms will be
part of this educational agriculturecentric tour.
Apple orchards, vegetable growers, cows, goats, chickens, turkeys,
horses, alpacas, a vineyard, sustainable agriculture, hydroponics and
more will be featured within these 12
farms.
Because this is a family-friendly,
free, self-guided tour, there is no
beginning or end of the tour—just
choose the type of farms that interest
you and visit during the designated
time. Last year hundreds of visitors
enjoyed their “day in the country.”
The Farm Stroll and Market is
organized by the McHenry County
Farm Bureau and the University of
Illinois Extension McHenry County
Master Gardeners. Master Gardener
and 4H volunteers will assist farm
families in accommodating guests
for farm-related demonstrations and
tours.
There is no charge for the Farm
Stroll and Market, but most farms
will be selling food, produce or other
farm-related products. Bring cash
to purchase items directly from the
farmers.
Remember, these are working
farms: Dress appropriately, preferably in layered, all-weather clothing
and sturdy shoes. Children of all ages
are welcome, but they must be supervised at all times. No pets, please. A
few farms will have toilet facilities,
but several do not.

Seneca Ladies Literary Society to share history
McHenry County’s Seneca Ladies Literary Society is as storied
an institution as you’ll find and at
2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, you will
hear many of those stories firsthand.
The society will talk about its history and its new book, “The Seneca
Ladies Literary Society – Learning and Laughing Together Since
1855” during a special presentation
at the McHenry County Historical
Museum, 6422 Main St. in Union.
The program is free with museum
admission.
The book profiles the oldest
women’s literary group in America.
Begun in 1855 in Seneca Township,
the catalyst was a nationwide effort
in 1853 to save George Washington’s estate, Mt. Vernon, in Virginia.
By 1858 the Mt. Vernon Ladies
Association, led by Louisa Bird
Cunningham, and their supporters raised enough money to offer
a down payment of $18,000. They
eventually raised the $200,000
needed to buy the dilapidated mansion and 200 acres. It was just one
of many diverse projects the stillthriving Seneca Township group
was and is involved with.
“What I didn’t realize is how
many different activities they did
and what vehicles for creative expression there were,” society president Pam Gerloff said.
“They would write these elaborate and interesting minutes, filling
them with humor and commentary.
They would give members an assignment to do a creative story or
essay, write skits and debate on different topics. It wasn’t just reading.
It was this whole array of personal
expression. …
“Each meeting is full of lightness, laughter and joy, as well as
thoughtful reflection.”
In 1872, what came to be known
as the “One Great Quarrel” occurred. Some wanted membership
to be restricted to the social elite,
while others believed that would
not support the purpose of the society. Five prominent members ended
up withdrawing to form their own
organization, which no longer exists Those who stayed made an ex-

their horizons.
Unlike today, the opportunities
for women were limited. But these
ladies found ways to raise money
for Civil War causes and make
items for soldiers. Using member
dues (5 cents per member per meeting) and occasional fundraisers,
they sponsored a French orphan after World War I through The Fatherless Children of France, donated
quarterly in the 1920s to Armenian
Relief Work in response to the Armenian genocide, contributed to the
ever-expanding needs of the local
hospital and provided financial gifts
to historical and literary societies.
Since there were no public libraries in the early days of the organization, the Seneca Ladies decided
to start their own. The first library
book list contained more than 400
titles.
By 1895 the list included 560
books, with many titles crossed off,

to borrowers who wanted to keep
them.
“Working on this book gave me a
much deeper appreciation for these
women,” Gerloff said. “They had
a wide-angle view on the world.

didn’t have all the opportunities
that women do now, but they just
