THE VERY BEST WINE LAST
A Lutheran Pastor came into his Barossa Valley Lutheran
Church and there found a man drinking from a glass of wine. He
started to reprimand the man, saying, “Don’t you know that this
is a church and it is not appropriate to drink wine in church!?”
The drinker raised his glass and said, “Pastor, if you would listen to my story, you will discover that my approach is quite
Christian and Lutheran.”
“All right” said the Pastor. “Let’s hear your story.”
The drinker began his story, “When I take the first sip from my
glass, I remember that in the beginning God created heaven
and earth, and that he created me and gives me all good things
– including wine. As the Psalm says, ‘Thanks be to God who
gives us food in due season and wine to gladden our hearts.’
“As I take the next sip of wine I remember Jesus who changed
the water of the Law into the wine of the Gospel. The host of the
wedding was confused, saying, ‘Usually people serve the best
wine first, but you have kept the best wine until last!’
“The Law, or the Ten Commandments, is something we can’t
keep. The Gospel is the Good News that, through Jesus Christ,
God forgives us. This change is like water to wine.
“As I take the third sip of wine from my glass, I remember that
Jesus rose from the dead on the third day.
“Then as I continue to sip, I remember Martin Luther, and how
he rediscovered that Jesus had changed the water of the Law
into the wine of the Gospel. It was being taught that money was
necessary to buy salvation, but Luther rediscovered in the Bible
that salvation is a free gift through Jesus Christ.
“As I sip some more wine, I remember that in the years leading
up to 1838 in Germany, this wine was running out for a number
of dedicated Lutherans. They were being compelled to compromise their faith, or be punished and persecuted. Their wine was
running out!

On the last day of the conference I attended a Master
Class on Dementia Care. A very interesting day of sharing ideas with international staff who were all involved
in providing a variety of services to the elderly suffering
with levels of dementia. One service provided a night
time service to families who had a loved one who,
whilst suffering dementia, stayed up all night. Staff
manned a day therapy centre from 7.00pm until 7.00am
and took in a growing number of clients needing care
over night.
Lee Martin
Oh how the seasons change! I do hope you all enjoyed
your Easter breaks and all the trimmings that go with
it. The cold weather has arrived very quickly and so
has the flu season - I should know, as at the writing of
this article I am coughing and suffering from the effects of the flu. I encourage everyone to have their
annual flu shot when they become available in the
next week or so.
In reviewing what I have learnt over the past week away
I believe that Tanunda Lutheran Home has a lot to offer
and is well placed to provide the best levels of services
and care in to the future. Over time there will be some
more changes to ensure we meet the needs of all who
choose to make this their home. Technologies will be
researched and implemented as we are able to budget for
them.
I have just returned from an aged care conference in
Singapore. It was a privilege to be able to tour around
a number of local Aged Care Day Centres where the
local staff managed dementia residents. The biggest
difference noted between what they have and what we
have is - space. Due to lack of space everything is
done in small but well used areas. We all shared the
same issues of too many clients, not enough trained
staff and not enough access to government funding.
Residents were expected to pay on average $22 per
day for the day care services which is nearly the same
as what is currently being suggested by our government now.
On a different note - I would like to welcome on board a
growing number of new staff. I hope your time at Tanunda Lutheran Home is an enjoyable one and you are
settling in to the new surroundings. We all look forward
to getting to know more about you so you feel part of
the family.
The 25th of April 2015 is a special day - 100 years since
the landing at Gallipoli - ANZAC Day. I hope all those
who are able, attend the many ceremonies in the region.
It is a time to reflect on what makes Australians proud the feeling of freedom and mateship.
Over the course of the conference it was made clear
that the resident service was the most important part
of being in an aged care facility. The food experience
was still the major activity - food must be well presented and nutritious - as you would get in a restaurant. Having a very active social program that involves everyone. There is encouragement to involve
children more in the home setting. Technology will
play a greater part in meeting the needs of residents in
the future. With easier access to rehabilitation type
care there is a greater likelihood that residents will
regain a higher level of independence. The use of robots - in various shapes and sizes - to assist care staff
was demonstrated - not sure how soon we will see one
at Tanunda Lutheran Home - but you never know. The
issue of staffing and training was well discussed - it is
a global issue - not enough young people wanting to
work in aged care. The average age of care workers is
now over 50 years.

The Late Kelvin Oliver Hoffmann —28.09.1922-17.06.2014 - PART TWO
We are grateful to Kelvin’s family for permission to print his story to commemorate Anzac Day.
Kelvin was a resident of TLH until his death on 17th June 2014. The late Wes Liersch spent time
interviewing Kelvin, and we thank his family for providing further details of his war story—Part 2
The next move was to a heavy conversion unit in Lincolnshire where
they were introduced to the mighty Lancaster bombers. After a few weeks of familiarisation they were ready for action. The Lancaster was the best of its class—a wonderful
aircraft, very responsive and manoeuvrable for its size. It was powered by four Rolls
Royce Merlin engines each of 1640 horse power. Seven members in the crew carried
two Browning 303 machine guns in the mid upper and rear turrets. Wing span 102 feet, length 70 feet, height
20ft6 inches. It weighed 37,330 lbs and could carry a bomb load of ten ton. Cruising speed was between 200 and
300 mph. Unlike modern day air craft, it was not pressurised so oxygen masks had to be worn about 10,000 feet.
There were over 7,000 Lancasters built for active service.
It was there that Kelvin gained his commission to the rank of Pilot Officer. He was assigned to 576 Squadron
RAF, 1 Group Bomber Command which was formed on 25th January 1943. They lived from day to day. One
was never sure of breakfast next morning and it was then that Kelvin realised there was a God, and that he had to
rely on him. According to statistics, approximately 30% of air crew didn’t see tomorrow and one got quite used
to vacant spots at the breakfast table. In the end, it appeared as though the war would never end; they weren’t
frightened—just scared stiff at times.
Their first mission was a raid on Berlin—seven Lancasters were involved, one failed to return. In the first month
of operations the Squadron lost seven Lancasters and crews. This was the Battle of Berlin which came to a conclusion at the end of March 1944. In April 1944 Squadron efforts were concentrated on bombing railway communications and military installations in preparation for D Day landings on 6th June 1944. The last bombing operation of 576 Squadron was the attack on Hitler’s mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden in which 25 Lancasters took
part . Toward the end of the war 576 Squadron became involved in the dropping of food supplies to the people of
Holland and transporting liberated prisoners of war to Britain. 576 Squadron was disbanded at Fiskerton on 13th
September 1945. Kelvin was discharged on 3rd May 1946 with the rank of F/O.
After the war, romance with local girl Roma Lindner was followed by marriage.
Together they purchased a general store at Kilkenny and ran that business for
about five years. They became very involved with the Lutheran church and
were instrumental in forming a congregation at Woodville West. An original
member, Kelvin was also a lay reader, treasurer, and elder. Rev Gary Backen
was the pastor at that time. The family then moved to a new house at Seacliff
Park. Kelvin drove trucks for three or four years for Quarry Industries and when
he sold his truck, he gained employment in the insurance business .
After retiring, Kelvin became very involved with the Glenelg Lutheran congregation before their church was built. He was active on the building committee
and held the offices of chairman, elder, parish worker. Their children (two daughters and a son) were educated at
Immanuel College in Adelaide. As adults, they had all moved to the Barossa where they joined the Bethany
Lutheran Congregation. Their move inspired Kelvin and Roma to follow their lead—and this is what they did.
Kelvin was a resident at TLH in Waratah until his death on 17th June 2014 aged 91.

Meet the Residents
No 1: Glen & Joy Schultz previously lived in Lehmann Road. They were ready to downsize and
were attracted to Pellegrini Drive because of the storage facility for their caravan and the provision of
general maintenance. They are very happy with the open space plan of their unit as well as the wide
doorways. Between them they have seven children—three boys and four girls—and nine grandchildren. Welcome Glen and Joy
No 2: Alan & Joy Hall , along with Billy and Mulga moved from Angaston to their new home at no. 2.
They both were school teachers—Alan is Primary trained but has also taught Secondary. Joy taught
pre-primary and was also teacher-librarian. They met at Yankalilla and since then have had many
moves. They have three children—two boys and one girl, also six grandchildren. The time came when
they wished to downsize, with a smaller yard, but still in the Valley. They regard a double garage as
important as well as caravan storage. They are very happy with their new home and neighbours.
Welcome Alan, Joy and doggies
No 3: Tony & Annette Ognjanovic recently moved from Gladstone in the mid North to Tanunda. They
chose Alf Pellegrini Drive for the beautiful, well presented home that would suit their needs as they got
older and for the wonderful sense of community at the Tanunda Lutheran Home—and have thoroughly
enjoyed the move. Their daughter Lisa and husband Steffen of Tanunda have two boys. Their son Matthew and wife Tracey have three boys and live at Mt Compass. Photo with youngest grandson, Finn.
Welcome Tony and Annette
No 4: Ruth Tainish and Mandy Johns. Mandy and Ruth say that every one is so
lovely and accepting and they have settled in as though they’ve always lived here . Mandy
was impressed with her mother’s IL home in Arrawarra Pl (Ferne Fyfe) so applied for a
home in Alf Pellegrini Dr. Mandy is a country girl, growing up at Sandy Creek. She joined
the RAAF at 17, serving as clerk supply for 15 years. Ruth grew up in the Port Adelaide
district and has worked as a Mental Health nurse at Glenside and James Nash House for
42 years. They lived at Lobethal and Craigmore before coming here. Mandy and Ruth
enjoy looking after their little grand daughter Madison on Mondays while her mum is at work. Welcome, Ruth and Mandy
No 5: John Schultz moved only from Magnolia Street to his new home. John grew up in Flaxmans Valley
and attended Eden Valley Primary and Nuriootpa High Schools. He was a local government accountant and
also taught Secondary students. John has two sons (one in Berlin) and one daughter. John is fond of ballroom
dancing and social tennis. Now retired, John was attracted to Pellegrini Dr due to the good design and functionality of the homes, plus the low maintenance. Welcome, John

No 6: Beth Hage didn’t need to move far as she has lived in Tanunda all her life and this is where her heart is! Beth decided it was time to move from her old house — she wasn’t as mobile as she once was and needed to down size. Beth
moved in last October and is very happy with the design of her new home . She has six children and 14 grandchildren. Her
six great grandchildren are all boys. Welcome, Beth
No 7: Barbara Keil Mercier was born in Tanunda , attended Nuriootpa High School, but moved here from
the south of France on the Mediterranean. At the age of 18 she left Tanunda with three girl friends for a
holiday in England and ended up living and working there for six years. On her return trip home to her
beloved Tanunda via the Panama Canal, Barbara met and married her French husband in Venezuela
where they lived for 50 years. They then moved and lived in France for 20 years. For 50 years Barbara was
employed as a marine claims adjuster .
As a result of her extensive travels, Barbara is fluent in several languages. But her family and heart are
definitely here in the Barossa Valley—”A wonderful place—it’s home”, Barbara added. Welcome, Barbara

Ira & Errol Zeunert
It is always a blessing to have volunteers at TLH but it is a double
blessing when the volunteers are a husband and wife team. This is
what we have in Errol and Ira Zeunert and they have been volunteering their services for eight years now.
Every Monday morning they wheel residents to Hymn Singing in the
chapel and every third Monday Ira leads the session. After each hymn
(there are usually around 10) there is a short interlude where Ira will
tell an inspirational story or verse. She also likes to incorporate something light-hearted in the way of a joke or funny story which gives the
residents a bit of a chuckle and makes for an enjoyable morning.
They are also part of the team of volunteers who write out birthday cards and deliver them to the residents
and they do this every third month.
Errol and Ira enjoy their involvement in Probus and they attend meetings in Nuriootpa where they have
separate men’s and ladies’ clubs. Ira is a founding member of the Ladies’ Probus Club at Nuriootpa. They
also attend the joint meetings (men and women) at Tanunda.
They both love dancing (Ira first started dancing when she was just 14 years old) and when the Williamstown dances were in danger of closing down five years ago, Errol and Ira stepped in and took on the challenge of running them. They did this for three years. It was a big commitment ,but one that they put their
hearts and souls into. These dances were held once a month and were very well attended. The money
raised went to the local Abbeyfield Nursing Home where it was used to purchase equipment. Ira and Errol
are still dancing and attend dances three times a month (health permitting) at Nuriootpa, Greenock and Williamstown.
Travelling is also something they both enjoy and have travelled to many parts of the world over the years
with Thailand being one of their favourite destinations. ”In Thailand we went on everything that moved”,
laughs Ira. “We rafted down the river, rode elephants, electric train and a bullock wagon!”
Another thing they both enjoy is breeding budgies and cockatiels. They currently have 12 pairs of cockatiels
and four of them have babies. Errol hand rears the babies which involves handling them three times a day.
This makes them tame and very trusting and in turn they make a lovely pet.
Between them, Errol and Ira have seven children and currently 22 great grandchildren. Ira laughs and
says, “At present there is no baby on the way!”
Thank you both for your valuable contribution to TLH. It is greatly appreciated.

Those
Chapel Wheelchair Tags
“NEW
SETTLERS”
Recently two friends attending the
Gramp Chapel for divine service wondered what all the tags on strings were doing on the
wheel chairs. Discussing it later, they were reminded
of price tags seen on valuable items for sale in a gallery.
When the art piece has been sold, a red dot is put on
the tag so no one else can buy it and take it away.
Just imagine all those precious residents with price
tags on their wheel chairs? Our guests decided that this
is what is written on each tag:
People working together to achieve
balance & security
in a new way of Living
Here is your Newsletter from our last
meeting on 27th March
This meeting which focussed on the second cornerstone of
the New Settler’s program, saw 16 hostel residents, 3 Independent Living Residents, 2 staff and 5 volunteers present.
Maybe our growing interest in the Program is in part due to
the delicious fact that chocolate Tim-Tams are up for grabs
at each meeting! Thank you to Hospitality & Management for
continuing to make such treats available.
The four cornerstones of the Program are:
•
We are encouraged to be HONEST
•
We can share our life skills with each other and
learn new Life SKILLS
•
We need to KNOW that we are WORTHWHILE.
•
We can still have DREAMS & VISIONS for the
FUTURE
So on Friday we worked on the second cornerstone and
discussed SKILLS for LIVING.
As we identified a “skill for living” we placed a landscaping
pebble in the pan of a set of kitchen scales. Our aim was to
identify enough life skills and so place enough pebbles in the
pan to lift the object of a stone wombat high into the air. The
wombat of course represented the changes, challenges, and
losses which are a part of coming into residency at TLH.

Some good news is that a “very witty woman” has moved

was sitting talking to a friend just before the meeting began.
I am so glad I could overhear the following conversation.

they are not going to weigh us are they?”
Witty Woman…”Yes they will. Not only once weigh us, but
twice!”
(Friend …looking puzzled, as was I)

and none more so than in our Lifestyle Department. They are ALWAYS looking for volunteer
assistance with activities, concerts etc. If you

WELCOME TO SANDY YOUNG who
has kindly offered to take Pat’s
place in the Library
on Wednesdays.
Sandy responded to the April Tit
Tat request when reading her parents’ copy (Vic and Gladys
Kroemer.) Sandy is an avid reader
of a broad range of titles , both hard copies and on
her Kindle. She is computer literate so is perfect for
this role. Thank you Sandy.

wonderful Doll collection in the Social Centre for the Vintage Festival .
Congratulations to Annette who spent many,
many hours setting up this display and
thanks to those who volunteered on the roster
at the door each day.
