The Profile Manager
When the computer has restarted, the Profile Manager will be opened. You can use several devices with
Vodafone Mobile Connect; however a separate Profile is needed for each device.

Profiles later using the menu <Tools>, <Profiles>, <New> in Vodafone Mobile Connect.
9) In the first screen of the Profile Manager, choose if you want to install a PC data card or a mobile
phone. For this example, the installation will be shown with the Vodafone 3G / GPRS / WLAN data card.
If you need further information about any option, click on the small question mark that is shown on the
screen:
Choose “PC data card” and continue with “Next”.

Shadow Installer for Vodafone
Mobile Connect.
Introduction
Shadow Installer for Vodafone Mobile Connect (VMC) Version 4
The Shadow Installer enables IT Managers to preset software installations and setups of Vodafone Mobile
Connect release 4. The installation will run without asking the user for input and means that each user will
not be asked to individually enter setting or preferences etc as these are entered by the IT Manager via
the Shadow Installer.
The shadow installer is completely customisable by the IT managers to suit the needs of their enterprise
environments.

Setup of the Shadow Installer
To set up the silent installer, proceed with the following steps:
1) Create a folder on the hard drive of your computer and name it “VMC”.
2) Copy all the content from the Vodafone Mobile Connect installation CD into that folder.
3) Open the folder VMC\Software. A file called “setup.ini.sample” can be found there. Rename it to
“setup.ini”.
This file contains all settings to do a silent installation.
4) Now open the setup.ini file with a text editor.

Update Server Start/Stop
Document Details
The Vodafone Update server provides the ability for users to keep up to date with the latest software and
technology. Benefits cover remote updates, standardisation for support and functionality for users and
therefore provide a lower support cost and superior customer experience.
Requirements Needed
Software
The Vodafone Dashboard requires version 3 and upwards of the software in order to access the update
server. Previous software such as version 1 does not support this service. Other recommendations such
as ones relating to the operating system (as stated on the packaging) are required.
Hardware
Recommended and supported hardware requirements should meet the minimal recommendations shown
on the packaging.
Overview
The Vodafone update server is an online extension of the VMC product, aimed at keeping your software
up to date. New content is added to the site (what site?) allows customers to update software, hardware
drivers and fixes to ensure a smooth-running and functional Dashboard.
Why Stop the Update Server
When deploying Vodafone Mobile Connect in an enterprise environment, the IT administrator generally
requires the ability to prevent the software from making changes to the Standard Operating Environment
(SOE). This will ensure consistent support level on all VMC machines and conform to the corporate SOE
(and ensure what conforms to the corporate SOE??). When updates are required on the VMC, the
Administrator would then test the updates to ensure Quality Assurances standards before releasing the
product into the enterprise network.
How to Stop and Start
What is Regsvr32
Regsvr32 is an application that is used to register dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) and ActiveX controls within
a windows environment. The VMC will use this application (built in native application with most Microsoft
operating systems) to register the DLL for the VMC.
Stopping the Service
To stop the service you will need to run the regsvr32.exe file and point it to the updatex.dll file to stop the
service.
Version 1.1 issued

Using a batch file
Sample batch file to stop and start the update server.
The sample file shown below can be copied and pasted into notepad and saved as a batch file. An
example batch file name would be vmcstop.bat or vmcstart.bat. This sample batch file is a very basic
batch file to provide the reader with an understanding of how it works. Note the REM statement is used to
add notes within the batch file.
Stopping the update server batch
REM: BATCH FILE vmcstop.bat
REM: This is to STOP the VMC software from updating.

VMC Multi-User Install
Introduction
This document describes the installation process for an active Vodafone Mobile Connect user who does
not have administrator rights on their computer.
This document only describes the differences from the normal installation process.
Scenario 1
a) The user is given local administrator rights during the installation. Therefore, place the user into the
appropriate group (administrators).
b) Then, switch to the user. Perform the installation.
c) After the reboot, create all desired Vodafone Mobile Connect Profiles for the user.
d) Remove admin rights for the user.
Scenario 2
a) Install Vodafone Mobile Connect with your administrator account. During the installation, choose
“Install this application for anyone who uses this computer (all users)”:

b) After the reboot, create all Vodafone Mobile Connect Profiles that are needed for the user. The
Profiles also have to be created with your administrator account.
c) Then, switch to the user account. The user now does not have admin rights.
d) Before you continue the installation by clicking the Vodafone Mobile Connect icon on the desktop,
make sure that you insert every data card once that the user needs. This is necessary because the
Windows account of the user needs to “know” the data card before the Vodafone Mobile Connect
Profile is created. If you only installed one data card, just leave it in the PC Card slot when you
switched users.
e) Continue the installation by clicking the Vodafone Mobile Connect icon on the desktop. A progress bar
will be shown, indicating that all folders for the Windows account of this user are created. After this, a
reboot is necessary.
f) After the reboot, continue the installation by clicking the Vodafone Mobile Connect icon on the
desktop. The following window will be shown:
Choose “Yes”. Then, the following window appears:
Do not choose the administrator account, which is the default selection. Instead, choose the account
of the user and click “OK”.

i)
A summary of the settings you have chosen is shown. Enter a name for the Profile and click “Finish”
to create the Profile.
j)
If you installed more than one device on the administrator account and would like to make them
available for the user account as well, just start the Profile Manager again using “Tools / Profiles /
New” in the Vodafone Mobile Connect software.
Users can switch between several Mobile Connect Profiles, even if they do not have administrator rights.
However, it is not possible for them to create Profiles for hardware which has not yet been installed by an
administrator before.
Note: Multiple profiles for the same device can only be employed if the user has administrative rights.

How to prevent users without admin rights from creating new
Profiles
Users who are using Vodafone Mobile Connect without admin rights can create new Profiles in VMC, if
the new Profile uses a device which is already installed. These instructions explain how to prevent this
situation.
This solution works if NTFS is used as files system.
Step one: disable the simple file sharing in the Folder Options from Windows (open a Windows Explorer,
choose <Tools>, <Folder Options>. Then, open the tab “View”).
Confirm with “OK” or “Apply”.
Step 2: open a Windows Explorer and go to the path
Documents and Settings\[Username]\Application Data\ICS\
where [Username] is the name of the Windows account that uses VMC without admin rights.

Step 3: right-click the folder “ICS” and choose “Sharing and Security”.

Step 4: open the tab “Security”. In the “Group or user names” part of the Window, mark the user who is
using VMC without admin rights.
In the permissions checkbox area, select Deny so that the user does not have rights to write in this folder:
Click on “OK” or “Apply” to apply the changes. The users will still be able to open the Profile Manager, but
new Profiles will not be saved.
