2007 ANNUAL REPORT
Living Resources promotes and provides life-enhancing services to
individuals with disabilities in a safe and nurturing environment.
Imagine the possibilities…
To the regular readers of the Annual Report, our 2007 edition may look a little different. The images we
are using this year are the product of a very unique experiment on the part of our art instructors and
students at the Malta branch of the Carriage House Arts Center. Students were introduced to the
basics of portrait photography as they addressed technical issues such as composition and lighting. As
they took turns in front of and behind the camera, students were encouraged to imagine themselves on a
magazine cover. They quickly began to fall into character as they began to live their dreams. Before
they knew it, instructors Sergio Camacho and Jenny McShan were in the presence of scientists,
professional athletes and rock stars. With the help of Day Community Opportunity Specialist Dave
Whitaker, students were able to use photo-editing software to make their magazine covers come alive!
Dear Friends:
When we wrote to you one year ago, it was to share
our pride and excitement about the historic and
energizing changes that were taking place at Living
Resources. We are very pleased and humbled to
report that our expectations regarding the impact of
those changes in 2007 far exceeded our vision for
the organization.
Throughout the year, we shared the latest chapters of the
Living Resources story in our aptly named newsletters,
Sharing the Journey. It is now time to pull all those
news articles together in a way that truly reflects how
far we have come in just one year! Any discussion of
progress, however, must be accompanied by the cautious
recognition that there is still much to be done. Living
Resources Boards of Directors, our 700 employees and
the 1,100 people we serve require that we meet each
challenge with innovative programming, intellectual
vigor and the physical stamina necessary to reach the
next milepost; with our 2007 corporate growth and
achievements in hand, we believe we are well positioned
to do so.
Perhaps the most important event impacting Living
Resources in 2007 was our enhanced visual presence in
the community as a result of the construction of a permanent headquarters on Washington Avenue Extension.
Combining our administrative and program operations
at one location, easily accessible to all of the upstate
areas, has not only been economically farsighted and
logistically supportive for the individuals and families
we serve, but also environmentally responsible. From
the ground breaking in March to the move-in in August,
the entire Living Resources family watched the rise of
our new home with a shared excitement that was also
visible throughout the community. As the building took
shape, many friends of the organization sought naming
opportunities that would allow them a lasting way in
which to show their appreciation for all this agency has
done for their families and for the people in our service
areas. We are indeed grateful for their support.
Our larger quarters have also allowed us to establish the
Miller Sanders Gallery where we showcase the award
winning talents of our extraordinary artists and the
talented professional staff who guide and nurture them.
In 2007, 13 Living Resources artists were featured in the
gallery’s premier show. This event was so well received
that we chose to create the first ever Living Resources
calendar which we shared throughout the community and
the art world. The gallery, which was named in honor of
Lorraine Miller and Richard Sanders, has been featuring
a remarkable series of shows ever since and has become
an important stop for all visitors coming to the agency to
conduct business.
The pride we share with our individuals and their families
could not have been more evident than when the first
graduates of the College Experience Program received
their certificates of completion at The College of Saint
Rose graduation on May 12, 2007. We will always
remember Emily, Kate and Marcie as the pioneers who
forged the trail for the next individuals who will take
advantage of this life-changing experience. Our sincere
thanks go out to them, their families and to the New York
State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental
Disabilities which provided the funding for this
unique program.
We will continue to share our challenges, as well as our
strengths, as we communicate with our Living Resources
friends, families and community stakeholders.
Remembering that fifty percent of effective
communication involves the art of active listening, we
ask that you continue to share your thoughts with us.
Our committed board members and well-trained, caring
staff are ready to respond to your feedback and are
especially energized by the written comments you send us
on the annual family surveys, and the thoughts and
suggestions you include with your letters, e-mails and
phone messages. The end of the journey may never be
within our sight, but sharing the journey will strengthen
our resolve to meet every challenge along the way.
Sincerely,
Donald D. Bourque, Ph.D
President, Board of Directors
Fredrick W. Erlich
Chief Executive Officer
2007 | The Year in Review
T
he Ground Breaking and Ribbon Cutting ceremonies for the new and permanent headquarters on Washington
Avenue Extension represented a new chapter in the history of Living Resources. On March 8 and October 11,
community leaders, board members, family and friends came together to help us celebrate. The 34-year vision of our
founders, including CEO Fred Erlich and Bishop Howard J. Hubbard was now a reality. The $7.6 million building
which provides a strong, visible presence for Living Resources in the Capital Region is being financed with tax-exempt
IDA bonds.
T
he College Experience Program (CEP) graduated three students at The College of Saint Rose commencement
ceremony at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on May 12, 2007. Congratulations to Emily, Kate and Marcie who
will always be remembered as the first of many young people to complete this special two-year certificate program, that
not only provides a true college experience, but also allows people with developmental disabilities to hone the skills they
will need to transition to independent living in their communities.
A
group of participants from the Living Resources Acquired Brain Injury program, working collectively under the
name of Truly Blessed Ink, published its first book which they have entitled I Know You Won’t Forget. The book,
underwritten by the Living Resources Foundation, tells the story of a young boy whose mother suffers a traumatic brain
injury (TBI). On September 25, 2007, the organization celebrated the nationwide release of the book with a book
signing party at the new headquarters.
A
four bedroom home in Delmar for four young
women was added to the Living Resources
slate of residences in October. The organization
now includes 39 homes serving 230 residents
and 39 supportive apartments serving 41
individuals. The increase in living spaces was
partly due to the acquisition of nine apartments
in the City of Albany from the Office of Mental
Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.
Many of the individuals living in apartments
have jobs in the community and must be able to
independently call for help in case of an
emergency.
I
n addition to a patient caseload consisting of
home-bound elderly clients across four
counties, the Licensed Home Care Agency
continued to provide over 26,000 hours of
supplemental staffing for open positions in Living
Resources residences during the weekend and late
afternoon hours of care. The agency also
received approval as a Home and Community
Support Services (HCSS) provider for individuals
with brain injuries enrolled in the Department of
Health brain injury waiver. Staff training of
Personal Care Aides continued throughout the year
to insure that the agency would meet all HCSS
educational requirements.
Imagine the possibilities…
R
otaract, a “Junior Rotary Club” sponsored by
Living Resources, is a volunteer service
organization for adult individuals with disabilities.
Eighteen members make up our agency group along
with one part-time staff. During the past year, Rotaract
has volunteered at a local adult home, an animal
shelter and the Capital District Regional Food Bank.
I
n conjunction with the Imagine this… community
appeal, Living Resources staff established a unique
employee-driven component to this three-year
campaign. The purpose of the employee fund is to meet
the needs of those we serve which cannot be funded any
other way. The campaign is simply called the Employee
Appeal and all funds are raised through staff events or
pledged through payroll deductions. November 1, 2007
was the kick-off date for the three-year, $50,000
campaign; by year’s end, employees had proudly raised
over $15,000.
I
t has been another banner, award-winning year for the
Carriage House Arts Center (CHAC). Requests for
exhibits by the CHAC artists included the 4th Annual
Nature Art Exhibit at the Thatcher Park Nature Center,
the Earth Day Show in April and the 9th Annual Arts
Showcase during summer 2007 at the Albany Visitors
Center, and the 7th Annual National Exhibition for Artists with Disabilities at Sunnyview Hospital. The acrylic painting
by CHAC artist Kelsey Brennan entitled Mums was awarded the cover of the New York State Association of Community
and Residential Agencies events calendar distributed statewide at the annual conference and art show held at The
Sagamore in Lake George, New York.
C
hief Executive Officer Fredrick W. Erlich was honored by The Academy for Character Education at the Sage
Colleges with the 2007 Civic Leadership Award on March 21 at the annual Champions of Character Awards
Banquet. The award recognized Fred’s many years of service on behalf of individuals with disabilities, his manifest vision
of all that still needs to be done for this special segment of the population and his strong advocacy for community
support and inclusion.
T
he 2007 Family Survey was a compilation of 130 family responses. In answer to the question of “how you would
rate the overall quality of this program,” 99% of our families responded excellent or good. 128 staff members were
also acknowledged by name for their excellent work with our individuals and families. A parent’s description of the
agency as “friendly, responsive, cooperative and caring and the client always comes first,” says it all when it comes to
rating Living Resources customer service!
T
he much anticipated Annual Agency Picnic for friends and family took place on July 20 at Krause’s Pavilion in Clifton
Park. Attendance exceeded 550 and the weather and food also exceeded everyone’s expectations. The presentation
of Living Resources jackets to ten new members of the 25 Year Club was the highlight of the summer event; four 30-year
blankets were also part of the presentations. Over 50 of the 268 individuals receiving residential services have been part
of the Living Resources family for 25 or more years.

V
oluntary Residential Maintenance Program grants from the NYS Office of Mental Retardation and
Developmental Disabilities totaled $247,643 in 2007. Projects funded through these special grants included
renovations to kitchens and bathrooms, roof replacements at three houses, the installation of new fire alert
systems and the repaving of house driveways. New emergency generators were also installed at seven residences.
T
he Training Department which is responsible for the coordination of staff orientation, staff professional
development and state mandated re-certification trainings, added evening and weekend classes to its schedule
in order to meet the needs of our growing staff numbers. The trainers estimated they spent over 1200 hours of
actual classroom time including orientation for 187 new hires and several recertification classes for current staff
in CPR, basic first-aid and Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention. In the spring of 2007, the
department, in collaboration with the CEO, also conducted a special series of seminars call Conversations in
Management for the agency directors who supervise over 650 full and part-time staff.
I
n September 2007, Living Resources began a unique collaboration with Union College in Schenectady to serve
students with Asperger’s Syndrome. In an effort to help some of Union’s best and brightest challenged by this
developmental disability, the agency held weekly group sessions where students learned skills that would aid them
in their struggles to understand social cues and the subtleties of humor which were not meant to be taken literally.
In group, students identified many challenging social situations and worked to improve their ability to mix with
the general academic settings. With the exception of one graduate, all students plan to participate in this
program for another year.
F
iscal indicators of the corporation’s business
health continued to be strong and positive.
The ratio of current assets to liabilities increased
in 2007 and corporate revenue for both
residential and non-residential programs
increased by a combined total of 8.7%.
W
ith the beginning of the 2007-2008 school
year, Employment Services started a School
to Work Program partnership with the
Shenendehowa School District. Funded by a
three-year New York State Education Grant, the
program serves high school students with a wide
range of cognitive disabilities. The purpose of
this transition program is to provide students
with an opportunity to develop an
understanding of workplace skills along with a
chance to practice those skills with a Living
Resources job coach. In addition to job
coaching, Employment Services staff also develop
appropriate job sites in the Clifton Park area of
Saratoga County for the students.

PARTNERSHIPS IN CARING
Donations received January 1, 2007 through December 31, 2007. Each year, the work of Living Resources goes forward
with the generous support of our many Community Partners. The gifts of time and financial contributions from donors,

Living Resources received two Legislative Initiative Grants in 2007. Senator
Hugh Farley was the sponsor for a $25,000 grant for the Balltown Road
residence; the money was used for furnishing and other equipment needed at the
house. Assemblyman James Tedisco also sponsored a grant for $10,000 which
was used to replace the carpeting at the Schenectady office which is now home to
the Schenectady County branch of the Day Services programs and the Certified
Home Health Agency.
