Pastor’s Corner
I watched the movie “The Martian”. In it
we see the heroism and unselfishness of
humans as they return and rescue a
teammate accidently left stranded on
Mars. It’s amazing how much about a
person can be revealed in a crisis. In any crisis but
especially war, I have heard it said: “It brings out the
best and the worst in human beings”. On the one hand
you will see great cowardice and atrocities, on the
other: inspirational heroism and unselfish sacrifice. I
believe that living in our world everyday is a crisis.
There is always something going on that challenges,
tests, or perhaps, even threatens our life. How we deal
with it brings out the best and worst in us. When there
is a crisis EMTs, Paramedics, Firemen, Law Enforcement
officers, run toward the danger/crisis, not away. This
comes through many weeks, months, even years of
training and practice. In a sense Christians must do the
same!
Spiritually the world is in a crisis. We as Christians have
the advantage. We have the tools at our disposal to
combat/contend with these challenges and threats:
Prayer, Service, and the Sacraments. Sadly, many
members of the Body of Christ practice none of them.
They either dismiss it or presume the limitless
forgiveness of God and choose to do nothing. I am
afraid that many souls have fallen into the trap of
“indifference”. They neither care nor do anything to
improve the situation or human condition.
“Indifference” is the opposite of God, not hate or anger.
Yes, spiritually the world is in a crisis but God has also
given us the gift of Faith, Compassion and Hope.
Coupled with Prayer, Service and the Sacraments these
will only serve to bring out the best in us. When you do
these things you become more than humans, you
develop into wonderful children of God. You children of
God deserve the best. Beware the temptation of
indifference in a world that is in Crisis. We live in a
world that frequently calls out for your help and Divine
assistance working in and through you.

Knights of Columbus will be serving a

and under (when accompanied by a

breakfast in the Parish Hall) eat for
free. Stop by for a free cup of coffee. Whether you attend

applesauce, fruit juice and coffee, tea or hot chocolate —

Proceeds fund the charitable works of the Knights of
Columbus, Council 5300.
Blood Drive — The Knights of Columbus Council 5300
will be sponsoring a ‘United Blood Services’ blood
donation drive today from 8:00 am until Noon in the
Parish Hall. All community members are welcome. The
Knights will provide a free breakfast to all blood donors.

singles are invited to play cards, board games, and
other activities today, from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm in the

Financial Information
Parish Giving — Sign up for electronic giving! Safe and
secure! Visit our website: straphaelsb.org or call Shanelle
Turcios in the Parish Office, 967-5641 x101.
Property Improvements — If you would like to make an
extra donation to help us pay for parish projects, please
make the check payable to St. Raphael Church and on
the memo line put “Property Improvements”. Thank you
for helping us keep our property in good working order.
Summer Christmas Giving — This year, Christmas Day
is on a Sunday. We look forward to celebrating this day
with one another but the Parish
needs your help. Because this
Holy Day is on Sunday we lose an
entire Sunday's collection. That
means we will have $15,000 less
for our operating expenses. That
will hurt us significantly if we
don't plan for it now. Won't you
help us to continue to offer all the services and
programs that we offer by making a one time early
Christmas contribution or by increasing your weekly
giving each week until then? Thank you and God bless
your generosity!

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
St. Raphael School
Philosophy
St. Raphael School is committed to the intellectual,
social, emotional, physical and spiritual development of
each child. The Gospel values guide all learning and
instruction. St. Raphael School is a close community
providing numerous opportunities for faith formation
and focuses on service to our local community.
Mission Statement
St. Raphael School was founded when God answered a
Daughter of Charity’s prayer. To this day, our mission is
consistent with that of our founding Sisters: to educate
all children in preschool through eighth grade in mind,
body and spirit by imparting the values of Jesus through
a rigorous curriculum, devoted faculty and an actively
involved parent community.
Vision
St. Raphael School provides phenomenal educational
programs in a safe, caring and inclusive environment.
Our Catholic faith is embedded in all content areas and
we focus our lessons on the intellectual, social,
emotional, physical and spiritual development of each
child, preparing them to be lifelong learners. Our
curriculum is rigorous and is taught by caring,
dedicated, and highly qualified educators. St. Raphael
School is committed to striving to empower all students
to strive for excellence while learning to live and adjust
with this ever-changing, technologically diverse world.
Protecting Our Children
Swimming is a fun way to have some fun and beat the
heat during the summer. Parents should teach their
children about swimming safety, including how to
identify and handle uncomfortable situations. Although
you may be watching closely to make sure your kids are
safe in the water, don’t forget about when they’re
walking around, sitting out by the pool, using the
restrooms or out of sight. Teach your children what to
do when they feel uncomfortable at the pool, and let
them know it is okay to walk away and find a parent or
trusted adult at any time. For more info and a copy of
the article called “Know the Rules…Summer Safety Tips
to Teach Children” email: [email protected]
