Swimming with my Mother (stage duet) (45 mins & 15 mins Q&A)
& Deep End Dance (short dance film) (6 mins) CoisCéim Dance Theatre
WED 04 MAY 8.15PM Draíocht Studio // €14 / €10 conc
Swimming with my Mother is a stage duet
embodying the relationship between a mother
and son and their mutual love for swimming and
dancing. In this intimate dance and narrated story,
shared pasts intertwine and build gently like a
rising tide. Life stories are told with humour to the
sultry tones of Nat King Cole. Swimming with my
Mother played to sold-out houses in Dublin and
Paris and was Winner of Best Production Award at
the Limerick Unfringed 2011.
Deep End Dance features a fully dressed man as
he is pushed into a swimming pool by his mother.
He brushes himself off and begins dancing
underwater, always aware that she’s watching.
After a while she joins him in the turquoise
dappled waters as they perform a playful
underwater dance.
“The companionship of mother and son
seeped onto the stage in David Bolger’s
wonderfully gentle, perfectly formed duet.”
Seona MacRéamoinn, Irish Theatre Magazine
“… an astonishing display of dance”
Laurence Mackin, Irish Times
Movement Class for People Aged 50+

relaxing and fun way to stay in shape, this class
will combine easy stretch exercises and dance
sequences to music which help maintain flexibility,
strength, balance and co-ordination. No experience
or partners necessary, just wear comfortable
clothing and rubber soled shoes.

Roxanna is only interested in herself, boys and
Barcardi Breezers. Her sister Paula lives for
others – her kids, her friends, and Roxanna - her
family. In her tumble down flat in Ballymun, Paula
is in control; but when the unknown shows up at
her door, everything changes. Can Paula take a
chance on love, or will she always sacrifice her
own happiness for others? Pineapple is a tough
and tender drama about love and survival. Calipo
presents the world premiere of Pineapple, the new
play from acclaimed playwright Phillip McMahon
(Danny & Chantelle, All over Town, Alice In
Funderland). Contains very strong language.
“McMahon is clearly a romantic in a world of
cynics...warm, wry and touching.” The Irish Times
“There is a liveliness and topicality here that has
been lacking from much recent Irish theatre:
McMahon and his collaborators are talents to
watch.” The Guardian (Danny & Chantelle)

Paddy sits on the same bench outside his flat every
night, unable to sleep since the death of his wife.
His elderly neighbour Imelda does her best to drive
him indoors, but there’s no talking to him. Then one
day Paddy is annoyed to find a troubled young man
called Tony sitting on his bench. Paddy strikes up a
grudging acquaintance with Tony and discovers in
him a damaged soul struggling to deal with the past
and fearful of the future. As they build a tentative
friendship, they catch glimpses of matches played
in the nearby playing fields and realise they share
a forgotten passion for soccer. But Paddy hasn’t
coached since he lost his wife to cancer and Tony
hasn’t played since he lost everything to heroin.
If there is any hope that each man can rekindle a
passion for life, it is through this shared love for
soccer. Here we are again still is a moving and

where night wear is day wear and bitching is
everywhere, Waiting for IKEA is a heart-warming
story of friendship, family, community and sunbed
obsessives. This show contains strong language
and adult content.

Draíocht Film Club
Upcoming Films
Do you love film? Do you love all kinds of film and
would relish the opportunity to talk about them
with other fans? If yes, then we have the club for
you, as Draíocht began its very first Film Club last
September. Each film will be introduced by local
film scholars, Ann Downey and Mary Gillan, who
will lead the discussion afterwards. The aim of
the club is to give people the opportunity to see a
range of film locally, to provide a forum where film
can be discussed and debated in an informed way,
to provide opportunities for engagement with and
education in film and to do this while watching
some really great movies!

Earliest Memories Through
a Pinhole Camera
UNTIL 28 MAY FIRST FLOOR GALLERY
Michael Wann
Derelict
UNTIL 28 MAY GROUND FLOOR GALLERY
Wann’s work is specifically drawing-based and
juxtaposes arbitrary or transient images of
cleared landscape, with more thought provoking
depictions of the dereliction of habitation. The
work is as much about a process of mark-making
as it is about representing a seemingly neglected
landscape. Born in Dublin in 1969, Wann lives and
works in Co. Sligo.

Draíocht is delighted to host this exhibition of
photography created by the participants of our
Intergenerational Photography Project who have
been working steadily with our Artist in Residence
Garvan Gallagher since November 2010 through
a series of workshops and hands on engagement.
Participants started by making their own pinhole
cameras and then set about recreating and
photographing some of their earliest memories,
all the while developing their artistic skills. This
exhibition will be accompanied by a free catalogue.
Exploring the Exhibition
Join Artist in Residence Garvan Gallagher and
participants from this project on Thursday 05 May
from 7.30pm to discuss the creative process behind
their work and gain an insight into the experience
of working on this project.
This is a free event but booking is advisable
through Draíocht’s Box Office, tel: 01-885 2622.
Desmond Kenny Past and Present
09 JUNE – 27 AUGUST 2011
GROUND & FIRST FLOOR GALLERIES
Draíocht welcomes D15 based artist Desmond
Kenny to both the Ground & First Floor Galleries
this summer. Kenny has had an active relationship
with Draíocht since we first opened 10 years ago,
holding a solo show in June of 2001. This will be the
first major solo exhibition of Kenny’s new departure
into abstract painting. A retrospective of Kenny’s
earlier figurative work will run concurrently in the
First Floor Gallery. For the past 22 years Kenny has
worked as a figurative painter. Through portraiture,
landscape, the nude figure and Dublin City street
scenes he has explored diverse subject matter. Over
the past 3 years his style has shifted into that of a
more abstract painter. The sudden change occurred
whilst looking at paintings produced by his grand
niece. Her work appeared free and spontaneous and
not bound by art history. To tap into this elemental
childlike creativity the artist removed all figuration
from his work. The resulting body of work is greatly
removed from Kenny’s previous practice.

In 2008 Fingal County Council commissioned
Brian Duggan as part of their ongoing public art
programme. Brian explored several aspects of
Fingal with this film and accompanying book. The
film is inspired by the 1909 text by “The Machine
Stops” by E. M Forster which depicts a world in
the future seen in 1909 and a story of relationships
between people during a time when society begins
to change and break down. The film traces a non
linear journey, on foot, over the surface landscape
of Fingal’s public and non public spaces by two
protagonists who are trying to meet - starting at one
end on Colt Island, Skerries and the other at the
Huntstown Quarry. For further information please

Draíocht Workshop Room // Course Fee €90 / €75 conc
This is an animation workshop using charcoal
drawing and stop-motion photography. The idea
is to get from seed to plant, drawing continuously.
We will draw the seeds first, so we begin with a
number of seeds on the paper, then all changes
or growths to the drawing are constantly
photographed. The focus of the workshop is on the
manipulation of the drawing toward animation and
general charcoal drawing techniques. Afterwards
the instructor will compile the photographs into a
short animation and each participant will receive
a DVD of this. This is a hands-on and messy
workshop!
This short, intensive drawing course will take
place over the course of four evenings and one
full day with artist Michelle Hall. It is open to
both beginners and those with some experience
in drawing. The course takes inspiration from
the current exhibition at Draíocht by Michael
Wann. Using pencil and charcoal we will explore
related imagery such as rural scenes, organic
forms in nature (trees, branches etc.) and
dilapidated buildings. This subject matter will
form the basis of the course, which will explore
various exercises and techniques of drawing.
