OUR MISSION
The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement
Foundation (MC-LEF) provides educational
assistance to the children of fallen United States
Marines and federal law enforcement personnel.
Since our founding in 1995, MC-LEF has awarded over $61 million in scholarships and other
humanitarian assistance, and supported over
3,500 children.
MC-LEF relies on the commitment of volunteers and generous donors across the country, who
organize events, provide financial support and
recruit others to our cause. With only one parttime employee, MC-LEF is sustained by a network of people who believe that the brave men
and women who protect our country and our communities deserve to have their families protected
as well.
Thanks to our generous donors, MC-LEF is
currently able to place a $30,000 savings bond in
a scholarship account for every child who loses a
parent serving in the United States Marine Corps
or any federal law enforcement agency. In recent
years, we have expanded our mission to provide
medical equipment and financial support to catastrophically wounded Marines, as well as financial support for mentally or physically disabled
children of active duty Marines. In the past, MCLEF has also aided the children of other military
personnel who perished in terrorist attacks and in
the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
MC-LEF is an approved IRS 501 (c) 3 organization that has been recognized for its excellence
and efficiency by the Independent Charities of
America. 98% of all donations to MC-LEF go
directly to fund our mission.
Although MC-LEF is immensely proud of our
work to date, there is still much to be done to support the families of America’s Marines and federal law enforcement personnel. Please visit
www.mc-lef.org to learn more and find out how
you can help.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN...James K. Kallstrom
PETE HAAS – PASSING THE BATON
Any successful organization, company, institution, or foundation, like a human being, needs a tirelessly
working heart – Pete Haas epitomizes the heart of this Foundation. As of January 2014, after 18 years of dedicated, loving service, Pete Haas has stepped down as President of The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement
Foundation. Thankfully, he will continue to serve on our Board
of Governing Directors.
While Pete’s grasp on the thousands of aspects involved in
running this Foundation can never be duplicated, we are
blessed to have Ed Boran, long time Board of Directors member, assume the position of President. Pete has graciously mentored Ed over the past 15 months teaching him the necessary
administrative skills needed to seamlessly continue in our mission. We welcome Ed and thank him for “stepping up.”
Pete Haas is one of the Foundation’s founding members and
since our inception in 1995, he has worked diligently behind
the scenes. Pete’s love of the Marine Corps began with his
enlistment and service in Korea. He has spent his entire life
supporting and promoting United States Marine Corps causes,
as well as, being involved with several other charities. Pete

all of the unglamorous behind the scenes work. Pete is our
ambassador of goodwill and through his tremendous interfacing with our donors and supporters, he has spread the word of our mission to all four corners of the earth. He
spends seven days a week, 365 days a year thinking and working on making MC-LEF the premier Foundation
that it is today. His mission has always been crystal clear – “what is best for the Foundation and the children
we serve” – it has guided his every decision.
As everyone knows, behind every great man – there is the great woman that inspires, supports and promotes
him. Rosemary Haas, the first lady of MC-LEF exemplifies and embodies the power that holds up Pete. We
owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Rosemary and the entire Haas family for allowing Pete to devote the energy and time necessary to run the Foundation. Rosie’s grace, intelligence and encouraging manner have
undoubtedly been a source of inspiration in many of
Pete’s efforts on our behalf.
It would be impossible to write on one page or even
in one book the debt of gratitude and thanks we need to
convey to Pete Haas. Literally thousands of children
have a better, brighter future as a result of Pete’s unwavering efforts. His strength, integrity and wisdom are
unparalleled – quite simply – Pete Haas is a great
American!
Sir, you have our love, respect and eternal thanks.
We look forward to many more years of working side by

FAREWELL TO
DEVOTED
FRIEND AND DIRECTOR,
ED FITZGERALD
Portsmouth, RI -- Colonel Edward Francis Fitzgerald, USMC
(retired), of Portsmouth, RI, died Thursday, December 12, at home, surrounded by his family. He was 83.
Born on July 15, 1930, in Jaffrey, NH, he was the son of the late Mary
G. Blanchette Fitzgerald Wilder, and Edward R. Fitzgerald. He was the
stepson of the late Tracy P. Wilder.
Colonel Fitzgerald proudly served his country in the United States
Marine Corps for 31 years, and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam
wars. He was a decorated infantry and military officer and held numerous command and staff positions. He was awarded the Legion of Merit,
Bronze Star with Combat V, Navy Commendation Medal, Presidential
and Navy Unit Citations, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and numerous other awards and citations. His last assignment was Senior Marine
Advisor, Naval War College, Newport, RI. He retired in 1983.
After retirement he was employed in management positions by
McLaughlin Research Corp and Aquidneck Management Associates.
He was a 1952 graduate of Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH and
Edward F. Fitzgerald
received his Master’s Degree from Boston University. He was also a

graduate of the Naval War College, and the Marine Corps Amphibious
Warfare School.
In 1990 he began a second career as a substitute teacher at Portsmouth High School where he taught for
twenty years. “Mr. Fitz” was a committed and enthusiastic teacher well known among the students for his
energy and genuine caring. In addition to teaching, he chaperoned social gatherings, attended intramural athletic events, advised clubs, and organized and oversaw a yearly field trip to New York City’s Financial
District. He bought every fund-raising item or event ticket ever offered, and marked countless daily moments
of effort and achievement with his signature reward - a stick of Juicy Fruit gum.
The class of 2005 chose him to be their graduation key-note speaker and created a yearly scholarship in
his honor. Mr. Fitz often said he was blessed to enjoy two rewarding and enjoyable careers, both as a Marine
and as a teacher.
Colonel Fitzgerald was also active in military, social and church activities. He was a Director, Marine
Corps - Law Enforcement Foundation, (Quantico and New York City), and an active member of the Newport
County Marine Corps League Detachment, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Military Officers Association.
He was a parishioner at St. Barnabas Church where he was a delegate to the Parish Council and a Eucharistic
Minister. He formerly served on the board of the Portsmouth Public Education Foundation.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 20 years, Winnie Cosby Ashook Fitzgerald, who died April 10,
2013, and by his wife of 36 years, Margery Cadoo Fitzgerald who died in 1990. He is survived by a brother, Reverend George R. Fitzgerald, CSP, San Francisco, CA, and a sister, Alice Wilder Murphy, (Tom) of
Florida. He is also survived by four children: C Scott Fitzgerald, (Vicki), Green Bay, WI; C Lyn Lombardi,
(Rick), Middletown, RI; and step-daughters, Kathleen Ashook Weber, (Arthur), Middletown, RI, and Robin
E. Ashook, Newport, RI.
He leaves behind four beloved grandchildren: C Kaitlyn Fitzgerald, C Patrick Lombardi, C Tara Lombardi,
and Emily Katherine Weber. He also leaves one nephew, TJ Murphy; two nieces, Tracy Knowles and Kelly
Kraemer, and many cousins.
Mr. Fitz will also be remembered as the “honorary” grandfather of scores of Portsmouth High School students. One student wrote, “Mr. Fitz was my grandfather figure that I never had.”
Editor’s Note: Ed Fitzgerald also served as a former Editor of the MC-LEF Newsletter

GENERAL RONALD COLEMAN, USMC (RET)
NEWLY ELECTED MEMBER OF
THE MC-LEF
BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
I have been in the military for 41 years. I enlisted in the Navy in
1968, and have served everywhere from Vietnam to Afghanistan. It
was an honor to serve on Active Duty, however it is an even greater
honor to be able to help our Marines and Sailors after retirement.
Traveling all over the world for the Marine Corps I have been able to
see just how important family is in all different cultures. And for me
there is no greater honor than to bring that thinking home, and to support our Marines and their families.
Having retired from active duty in 2009, I have continued my support of our active duty troops and their families at many events
General Ronald Coleman, USMC (Ret)
through the years. An event that I am very fond of is the Gathering of
Heroes held at the Irish Pub in Philadelphia.
I was introduced to the event by my friends at the Philadelphia chapter of Marine Corps - Law Enforcement
Foundation (MC-LEF). Often times fundraising events are formal, reserved events. There’s a lot of hand shaking, glasses of wine and pate, but not this one. At the Irish Pub hand shaking becomes back slapping, glasses
of wine become pints of draft beer and the pate becomes great home style cooking, and lots of it.
Best of all is the ambiance at the Irish Pub. There are hundreds of like-minded people coming out to support our troops and enjoying themselves at the same time. I can’t wait until next year’s event. My grandmother always said “ You’d be amazed at what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.” That’s
what this event is.
MC-LEF
C O M M I T M E N T
Members of the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation believe that our nation's most precious
resource is its youth. Their educational development is of primary importance in their becoming meaningful members of their families and of society.
Mentally or physically disabled children of the Marine Corps family may receive financial aid for medical
equipment or tutoring. Scholarship bonds are provided for children of
Marines who died while on active duty.
Scholarship bonds are also provided for children of Federal law
enforcement personnel who died while on active duty. Special circumstances may be considered for humanitarian, death or medical
cases.
Since it was founded in 1995, the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement
Foundation has provided over $56 million for the children we serve. We
try to make the world a better place for the children.

“SELFLESS SERVICE:”
PATRIOT AND ACTOR GARY SENISE
NAMED HONORARY US MARINE
by Twitchy Staff
Kudos to actor, musician, and tireless supporter of the troops, Gary Sinise. This weekend, he was named an
honorary Marine for his amazing generosity and advocacy on behalf of our men and women in uniform.
An honor well-deserved: Well known for his portrayal of “Lt. Dan” in “Forrest Gump,” actor and musician
Gary Sinise was named an honorary U.S. Marine during a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Friday, according to a statement released by the U.S. Marine Corps website.
“This was one of the most extraordinary nights,” Sinise said in the statement. “I was totally surprised by
what the general gave me tonight. I’m humbled, shocked, moved and motivated to keep standing up for our
men and women and giving back to them.”
Gen. James F. Amos, the Marine Corps’ Commandant, hosted the ceremony at his home at the Marine
Barracks.

Dear MC-LEF,
This thank you card is well overdue and I want to apologize! It has been a very busy time in the Traynor household from a new baby boy, to Kirsten graduating high
school, to getting Kirsten ready for college at UMass
Lowell!
Kirsten is super excited about going to college, she has
decided to live on campus! We, on the other hand, are
going to miss her smiling face around our house. Good
thing she is only 30 minutes away from us.! At this time,
Kirsten has decided to be a high school english teacher.
We want to write and thank you for the very generous
donation you gave to us, to purchase our new handicap
accessible van! We also wanted to thank Rush Limbaugh
for making the donation! My history teacher in high school
would always talk about Rush, as he went to high school
with him. I love coincidences, so I think it is so neat that I
used to hear stories about Rush in my high school history
class when I was 14 years old. Who knew that later on in
life he would assist in the purchase of a handicap accessible van for my daughter?! I think it is so neat! I wish I could
express how much of a burden you took off of our family
with your donation, not only financially, but physically.
Kirsten had outgrown our old van, and it was also weighing on our minds mentally that we were transporting her in
our old van, that she had outgrown, and was no longer
safe for her to ride in. The new van is wonderful! The lift,
which is manual, is a lot faster than our last life, which is
wonderful for the Boston winters! Technology is wonderful!
With the new van the doors are automatic, so it is easier to
get in and out of the van, so Kirsten has been going a lot
more places! Overall, the new van is such a blessing! It
has given Kirsten more independence since she can now
travel safely and it is easier to use. Please contact us if we
can help your organization in any way. Once again, thank
you from the bottom of our hearts!

My husband and I would like to personally
thank you and Mr. and Mrs. Rush Limbaugh for

focused solely on the wellbeing of our child,
and not on how we are going to pay for her
care. Thank you for being there for us when we
needed support.
Danielle just had her one-month appointment today and is responding exceptionally
well. It's our hope that she'll be out of the helmet by Christmas.
Thank you again for your generosity. We

RATCLIFFE DUO IS “AT IT AGAIN!”
EDITOR’S NOTE:
JIM AND JOANNE HAVE RAISED
OVER $100,000 IN DONATIONS TO
MC-LEF IN THE PAST YEARS.
My Dear Family and Friends,
We ran a successful Green Stride
Half Marathon on October
20th. It took place in Newburyport, Mas
sachusetts. Newburyport is
a beautiful New England town; it sits
on the mouth of the Merrimac
River and the Atlantic Ocean. As we
ran through the challenging
rolling hills and the captivating scen
ery, we experienced the foliage
at its peak, really a beautiful sight to
see! The half marathon consisted of 2,000 runners. We complet
ed the race in 2 hours 10 minutes 48 seconds. Jimmy flew into
town from Denver on Friday.
Saturday, we picked up our numbers
and Green Stride T shirts.
Then we enjoyed a weekend of birth
day parties, Jimmy being one
of them. It was nice catching up with
each other over dinner. A great
time was had by all!
With all your generous pledges you
have made it possible for us
to present the amount of $10,120
to The Marine Corp Law
Enforcement Foundation. I will pres
ent these donations to Pete
Haas, president of the foundation on
Thanksgiving Day. The donations will be distributed as scholars
hips for a child of a fallen soldier, when the child is ready for coll
ege he or she will know how
thankful we were that their parent serv

behind very sad families. I know how
good it makes you feel to
help the children. Our grateful "Thank

The ANNUAL
DINNER
Selected Marines, friends of the Marine Corps-Law
Enforcement Foundation and distinguished federal law
enforcement members gathered at the renowned Don
Peppe Restaurant in Ozone Park, New York on 28 October
2013 for the annual MC-LEF sponsored dinner. This is a
very informal gathering, which the Foundation is happy to
host to thank our members and donors for their support.
Here they rededicate themselves to support the mission of
the Foundation. They pledge their energy, their time and
their financial support to help others less fortunate. It is
here that they are again motivated and challenged to continue doing the best in achieving the goals of MC-LEF.
After the delicious seven course meal supervised by Don
Peppe’s head chef, John Guerriero, Foundation Chairman
of the Board, Jim Kallstrom extended his thanks to those
present and compared MC-LEF to a “Mom and Pop”
organization with just one paid employee. He said, “it was
sad that we had to give over $60 million to those in need
but it makes us feel good that we can help the children of
our fallen Marines and federal law enforcement and those
in need of
medical attention and with
your help we
will continue
to do so. God

you.” Ed said

ahead and intends to call on the membership to continue to
assist the Foundation in achieving its goals . He expressed
his gratitude that Pete Haas will still be involved to provide
guidance.
Pete Haas was introduced to a standing ovation. Pete is
one of the founding fathers of the Foundation, dating back
to February 1999. He thanked and praised the membership
for their support and in typical Pete Haas fashion he said
“without you, the volunteers, the membership, there would
be no MC-LEF, you do all the work.” Well the membership
knows better………THANK YOU PETE FOR ALL YOU
HAVE DONE TO MAKE MC-LEF THE SUCCESS THAT
IT IS.

thanked the Foundation for the invitation and said “I am

event at Don Peppe’s. The Foundation’s first priority is taking care of our families, it is important to you and it is
important to me.” He mentioned that he deals with many
benevolent organizations and MC-LEF was an elite organization rating high on the list. General Amos closed his
remarks by thanking Pete Haas for the leadership and spirit he brings to MC-LEF.
Kallstrom asked Dick Torykian to the microphone and
Jim introduced Andrew Chernoff of Colliseum Gun
Traders, LTD. Chernoff presented Torykian with a beautiful 357 Smith & Wesson pistol in appreciation for Dick’s
loyalty and support to MC-LEF.
As all good things must come to an end so it was here.
As the evening drew to a close, guests reluctantly departed
Don Peppe’s, but they left mindful of their role of helping
others, and proud to make a positive difference in the
lives of marines and law-enforcement personnel and their
families.

7TH ANNUAL
LAS VEGAS GOLF
TOURNAMENT
The seventh Las Vegas Golf Tournament sets a new
record by raising one hundred sixty thousand dollars for
MC/LEF. The total now tops $740,000.
The seventh annual Las Vegas Marine Corps-Law
Enforcement Foundation Golf Tournament was held during
the 2013 Marine Corps birthday week at the prestigious
SouthShore Golf Club in the Lake Las Vegas Resort.
This year’s event honored Staff Sergeant Jonathan Dale
Davis, who died while conducting operations in Helmond
Province. His son, Calvin J. Davis, is a recipient of an education scholarship from the Foundation.
The latest tournament was held on a stunningly beautiful
day in the Mohave Desert. The festivities started with a
Marine cadet color guard from the Marine Junior ROTC at
the Basic High School, Henderson, NV. This nationally recognized JROTC program has produced United States close
order drill champions for 18 out of the last 20 years. The
program is led by Lt. Col. Mike Viers.
The format for the golf was a scramble that insured a
lively, entertaining event. For the second year in a row, the
winning foursome was Andy and Marlene Wheeler, Jerry
Kring and John Herndon.
After a delicious lunch, directed by John Herndon of the
SouthShore Club, Vern Jennings and Mike Tobey acted as
MCs. Guests were introduced and the winners of the raffles
and auctions were named.
A special guest this year was Ed Boran, the President of
MC-LEF, who gave an inspirational talk about the history,
purpose and achievements of the Foundation. His words

and the following couples; Crouch, Jennings, Reif, St Clair
and Sierk.
The MC-LEF wishes to thank the committee of Mike and
Judy Tobey, Vern Jennings, Judy Crouch and Jim Sierk for
their hard work and dedication.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT...
The Marine Corps-Law Enforcemant Foundation is thankful for your
committment and support of its mission.
In this world where economic changes challenge us daily, we
need your help more than ever.
The greatest gift we can offer these children is to ensure that
their parents’ dreams of providing higher education are met.
Your contributions benefit the children of our Country’s heroes, like Sgt. William Pascal, USMC. His sons, Willliam Jr.
and Reese each received a $30,000 educational scholarship to honor their father for his service and dedication.

Basilone Parade
is Borough’s Pride
September 22, 2013 marked the
32nd annual John Basilone Memorial
Parade in Raritan, New Jersey where
the Marine Gunnery Sergeant grew up.
Basilone who was born in Buffalo, NY
was awarded the Congressional Medal
of Honor for his bravery while fighting
the Japanese on Guadalcanal in 1942.
He later returned to battle and was
killed at Iwo Jima in 1945 and was
awarded The Navy Cross.
Prior to the parade on Saturday
evening the 21st of September, a commemorative concert was held at the
Raritan Valley Community College.
Music normally is provided by the
Quantico Marine Band but they were
unable to travel to Raritan due to
sequestration policies. John Nobile's
Summer Swing Orchestra played an
excellent program with many patriotic
songs and ending with a salute to US
forces and God Bless America.
For the Sunday parade over eight
thousand people lined the streets of
Raritan to show their patriotism and to
honor their hometown hero. The two
hour long parade had over 150 groups
that marched in the celebration, including 20 bands, military vehicles, veteran and military organizations and
many more.

support for the
weekend events

Local newspapers headlined the
parade as "HONORING ONE
MARINE, CELEBRATING ALL
TROOPS." An observer at the parade
Don Hagen of nearby Flemington said,
"As well as honoring John Basilone
which is really what this is all about, it
gives the opportunity for the people
here to not only honor his memory but
to recognize today's service of the
youth. This is the most inspiring day in
the life of a Marine----past or present."
Hagen served as a Marine Corporal in
the early 1950s.
After the parade at the sight of the
John Basilone statue, the military guest
of honor and guest speaker Major
General Charles "Mark" Gurganus,
deputy commanding general of the
Marine Corps Combat Development
Command called Basilone "a great
American hero" and said it was
impressive that the town continued to
honor his memory. It is communities
like this that represent the very essence
of what it means to be an American, to
be patriots and also to be proud of our
heritage and this is exactly what
Gunnery Sergeant Basilone gave his
life for." General Gurganus speech
brought the crowd to a standing ovation. The ceremony ended with the traditional wreath laying at the foot of the
Basilone statue.
Prior to the concert, this beautiful little
princess, 6 year Joanna Riddell requested
to be photographed with Military Guest of
Honor, Major General Mark Gurganus.
Judging from the smiles they were both
pleased for the photo opportunity.

THE MARINE
TO BENEFIT
CORPS-LAW ENFORCEMENT FOUNDATION
The 2nd Annual Brescome Barton, Inc. Charity
Golf Outing took place on a glorious Fall day at
the beautiful New Haven Country Club in
Hamden, Connecticut. This year’s event was a
huge success. 120 golfers enjoyed some excellent
rounds of golf, awesome BBQ lunch followed by
a jovial cocktail reception and delicious dinner.
As is always the case with the Brescome folks,
high spirits and goodwill was the theme of the
day. Gene Sepe, CEO and President of Brescome
Barton, led his “troops” to another great charity
event.
Leslie (l.) and Gene (R.) Sepe, President and CEO of
Pete Haas, Sue Boulhosa, Leslie Sepe and
Brescome Barton, Inc.
Diane Vezza all arrived early at the Club to help
the Brescome team setup and handle registration. Each golfer received a nicely packed “goody bag” at registration. Brescome generously enlisted a rep from Cross Pen who arranged to have each golfer leave his
or her signature on a piece of paper which was later inscribed on a Cross Tech 3 pen.
They are quite elegant pens. After registration, the golfers enjoyed a BBQ lunch from 11am-12noon and
then all assembled for a 12:15pm shotgun start. The New Haven Marine Reserve provided a Color Guard
to launch the event lending a gracious reminder of why everyone was there. The weather early in the day
did not look great but as luck would have it the sun broke through and the day turned glorious. Brescome
provided many great raffle and auction prizes. The event culminated in a delicious buffet meal in the club
house. Chairman of the Board, Jim Kallstrom spoke eloquently at the event and helped relay to the attendees what MC-LEF is and what it does. Foundation incoming President, Ed Boran attended and chatted
with many of the attendees.
We are extremely grateful to Mr. Gene Sepe, Mrs. Leslie Sepe, Mrs. Lisa Lockton, Mr. Larry Kochiss,
and Ms. Mia Ginter for their tremendously hard work in making this event a huge success. The event
brought in over $60,000.00 to the Foundation. We look forward to a long standing relationship with the
good folks of Brescome Barton, Inc. Worldwide Wines.

should be; first class.
The oldest Marine present, Sergeant Jim Salerno,
was given the first piece of cake off the sword of
Major Benbow. Sergeant Salerno, promptly passed
the cake over to Corporal Dan Bourk, the youngest
Marine present. This action signified the oldest passing his knowledge onto the youngest. That knowl-
edge, in this case, was Jim Salerno`s service with
Carlson`s Raiders throughout the Guadalcanal cam-
paign and his superb actions at Iwo Jima, for which
he was awarded the Silver Star Medal.

Nicholas Hardwick – NFL
BYRON “WHIZZER” WHITE
AWARD FINALIST
By Eric A. Torykian
The NFL Players Association annually recognizes players who go above and beyond to perform community service in their team cities and hometowns. San Diego
Chargers Pro Bowl center Nicholas Hardwick became a
Byron “Whizzer” White Award Finalist. For this achievement, Nick received $5,000 to be named to a charity of his
choice. Nick selected the Marine Corps – Law
Enforcement Foundation.
The award was established by the professional football
players of America to acknowledge a debt of gratitude to
one of their own, Supreme Court Justice Byron Raymond
“Whizzer” White—scholar, athlete, patriot, humanitarian
and public servant. The NFLPA presents this prestigious
annual award to the player that is just as dedicated off the
field as he is on the field.
During annual NFLPA locker room meetings, players
selected teammates to receive NFLPA PULSE Awards for
their outstanding work in the community. These winners
were invited to submit applications for the Byron
“Whizzer” White Award and received monetary donations
for their foundations or a charity of their choice.
Nick is one of five finalists who received $5,000 charity donations. One will be named the 2014 Byron
“Whizzer” White Award winner and receive an additional
$100,000 for his charity. The 2014 winner will be named
at the Super Bowl.
Nick has been an ardent MC-LEF supporter for seven
years. He continues to assist the mission by attending
scholarship presentations and mentoring children of the
fallen. MC-LEF is extremely appreciative of Nick’s dedication and generous support.

LYNN ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL MCJROTC CADET
STAFF NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICER (SNCO) CREED
I am a Cadet Staff Noncommissioned Officer (SNCO) in
the Lynn English High School Marine Corps Junior (ROTC).
As such, I am a member of the most unique group of students in high school. I am bound by duty to my school, the
city of Lynn, and my fellow cadets to execute the demands
of my position to and beyond what I believe to be the limits
of my capabilities.
I realize I am the mainstay of the Lynn English
MCJROTC discipline, and I carry myself with military grace,
unbowed by the weight of command, unflinching in the execution of lawful orders, and unswerving in my dedication to
the most complete success of my assigned mission.
Both my professional and personal demeanor shall be
such that I may take pride if my juniors emulate me, and
knowing perfection to lie beyond the grasp of any mortal
hand, I shall yet strive to attain perfection that I may ever be
aware of my needs and capabilities to improve myself. I shall
be fair in my personal relations, just in the enforcement of
discipline, true to myself and fellow cadets, and equitable in
my dealing with every cadet.

Dear Colonel Fitzgerald,
I hope this letter finds you in good spirits. Us old Marines need
to stay strong to help the young of America and I can only send
you my thanks for all that you do for me, the cadets of Lynn
English High School Marine Corps Junior ROTC. With your help
and support, whether it is through a telephone call, a visit to the
school, or making a contribution to the Lynn English High School
Marine Corps Junior ROTC; all I can do is to say “thank you” over
and over.
I have asked the girls to write to organizations and individuals
that could possbly help us go to the 2014 National High School
Drill Team Championship again this year. You and the Marine
Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation have come to be dear to the
hearts of the cadets of the program and again all they can send is
“thank you.” It makes them try harder when they go to the drill
team championships.
You and the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation just
need to tell us what you would like us to do for the foundation and
we will acomplish the mission. You are in our thoughts and
prayers, God bless you.
Very respectfully,

A POEM
WORTH READING
He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.
And 'tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Joe has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Veteran died today.
He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Veteran died today.
When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.
Papers tell of their life stories
From the time
that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?
The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.
Page 36
While the ordinary Veteran,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.
It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.
Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever-waffling stand?
Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.
He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.
For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Veteran's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A VETERAN DIED TODAY."

Philadelphia MC-LEF Gala
by Mike Wallace
On October 26, 2013, the Philadelphia MC-LEF dinner committee held
their 9th Annual Gala at the Crystal tea room in Center City Philadelphia
with over 500 guests in attendance. The night was an outstanding success for
those who attended and more importantly financially for our foundation and
the kids. It started with the now traditional walk from the Marriot Hotel to
the Gala escorted by the Philadelphia Police Drum and Bugle Band and led
by our Medal of Honor Guests, Sgt Major Carlton Kent and the widows of
two decased marines, Lynsay Fox and Jennifer Dunkley, the wives of Sgt.
Bradley M. Fox and Sgt Allen Dunckley, both of who gave the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf.
In attendance were a number of both active and retired military personnel,
including LtGen Ron Coleman, USMC (Ret), LtGen Richard Kramlick,
Ed Wilbraham, Esquire, preUSMC (Ret), BGen Matt Clavy, Col Lou Piantadosi, Col Matt Nation, Capt

The Semper Fidelis Award was given to Edward Wilbraham,

MC-LEF Gala who traced his heritage back to one of the original
members of the first two battalions inducted into the Marine Corps
in 1775. Followed by the Eagle Globe and Anchor Award to John

with a large crowd and other competing forces you could hear a pin
drop during his remarks. The Sgt Major spoke about the sacrifices of
the men and women of our armed forces and made specific reference
to three young marines who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country, giving chapter and verse of their military actions, citing names,
dates, and places from memory. The Sgt Major spoke with deep
knowledge and affection about the work done by the Marine CorpsLaw Enforcement Foundation and how much marines know and
appreciate that the foundation will be there in their absence to help
their families.
The Sgt Major was ecstatic to be made an Honorary Philadelphia
Homicide Detective and receive the first gold replica of Jack
Cummings’ Homicide badge to honor his presence and support for
our Gala.
The night continued with a spirited and profitable live auction to
go with our Silent Auction. Another salute to Mike Thornton, MOH,
for donating many of the one of a kind military items from his personal collection.
Our support from the Medal of Honor recipients has existed from
our very beginning in Philadelphia and has been the most important
reason for our success.
In attendance were the widows of
two former marines who were killed in
performance of their duties. Lynsay
Fox, wife of Sgt Bradley Fox, leaving
two children and Jennifer Dunckley,
wife of Sgt Allen Dunckley, leaving
two children also. Each of the children
was a recipient of Marine Corps-Law
