Tecla’s K-9 Academy is a place
for all dogs, incorporating a full
curriculum of training programs
from basic through advanced
obedience, as well as activities such
as nosework, rally, agility and much
more. Tecla Walton views training
as a lifelong endeavor for a dog,
giving pets a purpose and a sense of
accomplishment that helps them to
live happy and vital lives.
We’ve all heard tales of dogs so
troubled they seemingly can’t be
socialized. Most of these dogs are
given up on and euthanized. Tecla
Walton doesn’t believe in giving up
on dogs. As a dog trainer for over 12
years, she has seen dogs so bad they
would attack their own reflection.
She’s seen distraught owners turn
to her after being kicked out of other
daycare facilities or coming to Tecla
in a last-ditch effort to help their pet.
No matter how bad the reactivity of
a dog, she believes each dog deserves
the opportunity to be rehabilitated.

“Don’t Be Offended—I’m A Skeptic…”
One of the most common
comments an animal communicator hears is “Don’t be
offended—I’m a skeptic. Prove
to me that this works.”
The reality is that we are each
in an on-going, deep relationship with our companion animals, and requiring “proof ”—
whatever that may be—is like
asking your significant other to prove that
he/she loves you.
The idea of telepathic communication
between ourselves and between species
is still hard for many of us to grasp. But
consider this: the capacity for telepathy
(defined as communication from one mind
to another by extrasensory means) is encoded in our DNA. When we were cave
people, we outwardly communicated with
a few hand signals and body language. We
had not developed the vocal structures
for speech. Yet we obviously had deep

Don’t underestimate your
companion animals. They have
their own thoughts and feelings
about their lives, their families,
and their life purposes. If we
don’t understand what they
are communicating to us, they
often “up the ante” by increasing undesirable behavior in an
effort to get us to hear them.
Animals respond first to our feelings,
then to the pictures of our thoughts (our
brains form mental images of our thoughts
before we speak them), and finally to the
words we choose.
If you are skeptical, discuss your concerns with your practitioner. Keeping it
private, and setting up a “test”, involves
strong emotion, and mental pictures of
withholding and blocking. Our animals,
in their loyalty to us, have been known
to withhold information or refuse to talk
about something that they perceive their
humans to not want known.

Renting with pets can be a very difficult situation. However, it does not have
to be. Jill Barsky has dedicated her life
to helping people find homes as well as
pets and people together find homes. If
you are a pet owner you need to realize
that you MUST be flexible in your living choices as we all have come to know
not every landlord allows pets and most
management companies of course have
size limits, breed restrictions, and restrictions on number of pets allowed which
always makes finding a place more difficult. The best advice Jill provides is to find a
place that allows your pet period! Do not assume if you “sneak” your
pet in and the landlord finds out they
will just say “OK.”
Day after day, week after week, month after month Jill receives the same phone call“My landlord just found out I have a pet
or pets and have to move immediately or
give up my pets.” Sadly, many of these pets
end up at the shelter and are euthanized
not because they are bad pets but, simply
because the shelters are so overcrowded.

Litter Box Problems

or have them put to sleep- inappropriate
house soiling.
If the problem arises in your household,
your cat should be checked out by your
veterinarian for a urinary tract infection.
Your veterinarian should run a urinalysis,
checking for blood and crystals in the urine.
In addition, an x-ray should be done of the
bladder to check for bladder stones. Many
cats with bladder stones have no blood in
their urine. If these tests come up negative,
then discuss various methods with your
veterinarian or animal behavior specialist
to stop the inappropriate house soiling.

Everybody is
familiar with the
idea of arranging for funerals or cemetery
choices before
the time that it is
needed. But what
is one to do with
the four-legged,
furry, or feathered members
of their family.
Some people say
they are closer to their pets than to other
people. Human parents have mentioned
that they are at peace, knowing their pets
that have been so important in their life
are taken care of. Pets can be buried in a
cemetery plot, or if cremation is desired,
cremated remains can be entombed in a
columbarium or buried in a cemetery lot.
Bronze memorials may be designed that
reflect this important connection, dates
of birth (or adoption) and death, and can
include pictures, or bronze representations
of specific pet breeds.
There are two cemeteries in Maryland,
Dulaney Valley in Towson, Maryland and
Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick,
where pets and their owners can be buried
together. Cremated remains can be comingled or mixed together before burial, or
entombment in a cremation niche.

Shih Tzu mix, who stole
hearts. Sammy’s owner
had to give him up and
Molly was from the Humane Society. But, both
were adopted into loving
families
Molly had been
abused. You could feel
almost every bone had
been broken. But, Molly
soon learned to love and
trust again. She loved to cuddle. When
her female human became ill and died,
Molly mourned her and found love from
the granddaughters who took over the job.
Arthritis did Sammy in and there was
little that could be done except to help
him cross the Rainbow
Bridge. Six months later
Molly joined Sammy. She
was in a playful mood that
night and in the morning
she was found curled up
in forever sleep. Molly
had found lots love.

Molly’s owners. It is

What to Look for In a Dog Daycare Facility
The answer is:
• The daycare program should be designed and overseen by a well-respected trainer.
• Staff consists of trainers or highly
experienced dog handlers who
continuously undergo professional
development.
• There are different areas for play based
on age and energy level.
• There is a training component offered
in the daycare program.
• Every detail of the program is one that
promotes safety and stability for your
dog.
• Program goals should include teaching
your dog good socialization skills.
Today’s lifestyle is busier than ever and it
seems as though the pace at which we race
through our lives is only increasing. Perhaps
one of the greatest casualties in this war we
run against time is our beloved family dog.
While we are busy working, running errands, and taking the kids to this dance class
or that soccer game, Rex is generally left at
home. And, when we finally do have time
for him we are in too much of a hurry to
teach him the things we need him to learn
or too tired to deal with his pent-up energy.
So what do we do? Enter the “doggy
daycare”. What a great idea! A place where
we can take Rex, Fifi, and Fido for the day.
A place where they can romp and play—
and come home TIRED!! However, not all
doggy daycares are created equally.
There is a huge debate regarding whether
or not group socialization is a good thing
for our dogs. The answer is that done correctly and thoughtfully, the doggy daycare
experience can be extremely beneficial. So
the question becomes, “What should we
look for when choosing a doggy daycare?”
• There should be an evaluation process
(it can be part of the first day or a
separate appointment).
• There is a stringent cleaning protocol
(anyone on staff should be able to tell
you how often and when the rooms,
kennel area, walk areas are sanitized).
• There is a requirement for proof of
vaccinations and fecal checks.
When you find a daycare that fulfills the
above criteria, your dog will experience
the benefits of proper socialization which
include confidence, stability, and improved
behavior at home as well as around other
dogs.

Importance of
Grooming
Much like the human hair, when a pet’s
coat isn’t properly and regularly groomed, it
can become damaged, cause skin irritation
and other discomforts such as overheating and parasites. Simply brushing your
pet on a regular basis helps prevent mats
from forming, helps spread out the oils
in the hair, which acts as a natural barrier
and lubricant for the hair and skin. It also
provides a soothing and bonding moment
between the owner and the pet.
Sometimes, though, a simple brushing
just won’t cut it. Perhaps your pet lost its
fight with the mud puddle or just couldn’t
say no to that lovely fragrance in the field.
Seasonal cuts, depending on your pet’s
breed may also be required. Whether it
is scissor trimming or a full shave down,
large breeds or heavy coated breeds would
certainly feel more comfortable not having to walk around with that heavy coat.
There are various types of shampoo and
coat treatments available for a DIY project
as well as many types of professional services for your convenience. In the event of

When boarding your dog,
it is critical that you and your
dog are prepared for the
stay. Always remember to
book your dates far enough
in advance, especially during peak season, to ensure
that you have boarding for
your dog.
Items to include on your
dog’s pack list:
Vaccination Certificate: Make sure that your dog is current
on his/her vaccinations. Since vaccines
required may vary by facility, call to confirm with your kennel in advance.
Food: Kennels may have food on hand,
but it is wise to bring your own food if it
is different than what the kennel provides.
Treats: Receiving his/her own treats
from a kennel caretaker may
help relax your dog and enable trust in a new caretaker.
Bedding and Toys:
Rules on bedding and toys
will vary by kennel, so check
when you book your dog’s
stay.
It can be helpful to do a
short trial boarding run if
your dog is boarding for the
first time. A trial run helps
your dog get used to the new environment and reassure him/her that you are
not abandoning them.

THE KEY TO FINDING
PET FRIENDLY HOUSING: 1. Don’t wait until last minute if this can be helped at all. 2. Be prepared to be open about your choices of location, types of
places, and amount of rent you can pay. 3. Look for individual owners rather than apartments because their
policy is their policy and exceptions are almost never made. 4. Unless you have another pet friendly place secured or your pets
have a safe, loving environment to be in temporarily (i.e. family,
friends, etc), don’t give your appropriate notice to your current
landlord unless you have actually signed another lease with a
new landlord. Yes, this may involve paying a month of double
rent, but it is something that may be necessary in order to keep
your pets. 5. Be honest about your pet/pets (breed, number of pets etc..) 6. ***With your potential landlord, do not sneak your pet in as you
“think” your landlord will never find out*** Furthermore, don’t
assume that if your landlord finds out, because you have
been living in the rental, the landlord will just say “OK”
Another great resource is a website called Foster a DC Pet—fosteradcpet.com. The website was created specifically for people who need
temporary housing for their pet during a transition phase in their life,
such as moving to a new house or apartment, military transfers, or even
medical issues like a hospital stay. Instead of being forced to surrender
the pet to a shelter, Foster a DC Pet allows for the community to come
together and find a temporary home for the animal.

for a Fine Art Portrait
The first challenge people face when
commissioning a pet portrait is simply
choosing suitable photographs. Our favorite photos might be over or under exposed,
slightly out of focus, or maybe the look on
the pet’s face is a little wrong or one ear is
cocked the wrong way.
This is why including extra photos with
your favorite pose helps the artist: a skilled
artist can overcome photographic challenges by using multiple shots of your pet
as references. It is therefore important to
voice what you think doesn’t look right in
the main photo.
The artist will also be able to create a
realistic collage of multiple pets based on
several individual photographs. In this case,
providing multiple photos of each pet is
advantageous, so the artist can work with
you to create the best combination.
The goal of the artist should always be
to create a portrait the captures the spirit
and life of your beloved pet. To that end
the artist should always share photos of the
portrait in progress, especially when working from several photographs to ensure
that the likeness of your pet(s) is captured
accurately.

PLAN AHEAD for a stress free move!
Become familiar with pet ordinances/
licensing in your new home & have all necessary vetting done in advance. This will
help if you need to use a professional pet
mover or kennel your pet temporarily. If you plan to rent, look for pet friendly rentals well in advance of your move.

Emergency Hospital?
Specialty and
emergency hospitals are available to provide
specific aspects
of your pets
care. These hospitals provide care at times when the family veterinarian is closed or when there
is need for specialized care. Specialists
provide advanced care for pets and work
in conjunction with your veterinarian.
Veterinary specialists have completed 3-4
years of advanced training in a particular
discipline (i.e. Internal Medicine, Surgery)
and have become board certified. When a
patient needs a complex surgery or has an
intricate medical problem, specialists help
provide the most detailed and complete
care for your pet. Specialists often work
with emergency veterinarians to provide
a hospital that is staffed 24 hours a day,
7 days a week. Emergency veterinarians
provide care during the hours your regular
veterinary hospital is closed. They provide
needed urgent services as well as work
closely with the specialists to help treat
patients that stay in the hospital. Specialty
and emergency hospitals are a cohesive part
of the veterinary health care team. Owners
consider their pet a part of the family and
these hospitals help make the best care
available when it is needed most.

What Does a Mobile
Vet See In a Day?
Aside from traffic congestion on the
Beltway, a mobile veterinarian can see a
wide array of cases, especially if they have
a fully equipped hospital on wheels.
A mobile veterinarian can give vaccines
and do wellness checks. Wellness exams
evaluate pets for dental disease, fleas, obesity, lyme disease, heart murmurs, etc. The
earlier a problem is caught, the better!
Multi-pet households and fractious animals
greatly benefit from this type of service, as
well as busy people!!!
Mobile veterinarians see sick animals that
need blood work to diagnose diseases like
kidney failure, diabetes and thyroid disease.
Some veterinarians can run this blood on
their truck while some send it out to the
laboratory for next day results. Some sick
animals also need radiographs and/or ultrasounds, which can be provided in a fully
equipped truck.
Mobile veterinarians can also do surgeries like spays & neuters, mass removals,
dental cleanings & extractions as well as
other more involved surgeries.
Finally, mobile veterinarians provide inhome euthanasia services, which make that
process less stressful and more peaceful to
both pet and owner.

Dental Care
Dental care is a critical component of
your dog or cat’s preventive health care program. If left untreated, dental disease can
lead to serious medical issues that threaten
your pet’s health, including liver and kidney
infections, and heart problems. Some studies estimate that more than 80% of dogs
and 70% of cats develop tooth and gum
disease by 3 years of age. Though preventable, periodontal disease is the most common clinical condition in cats and dogs.
Proper dental hygiene will not only prevent
dental and systemic disease, but also help
to minimize the lifetime cost of care for
your pet.
You can recognize the signs of poor
oral health in your cat or dog. If your pet
has persistent bad breath (one of the first
signs of dental disease), tartar or plaque
buildup, red and swollen gums, or pain or
bleeding when eating or when the mouth
or gums are touched, you should contact
a veterinarian who offers dental services.
Other signs of poor oral health include
pawing at the mouth, decreased appetite or
difficulty eating, and loose or missing teeth.
Good dental care includes a complete
oral exam followed by a thorough cleaning.
Dental cleanings include ultrasonic scaling
followed by polishing and a mouth rinse.
Regular checkups and regular cleanings can
greatly reduce dental-related health risks
while keeping your pet’s breath smelling

KCS—Caring for “Dry Eye”
Many pets have a condition called KCS
or “dry eye” and those with flatter faces
such as Pugs, Shih Tzu, Persians, and Himalayans are more at risk.
This is a chronic and
very serious condition as
it can lead to blindness if
left untreated. You may
see a lot of yellow or
sticky discharge on the
eyeball and eyelids that is
difficult to clean off and
comes back frequently.
The corneal surface becomes dull and dry and
then a dark pigment may
form that can lead to partial or total blindness. Visit your veterinarian if you
notice this condition occurring, follow the
treatment directions and be very diligent
with your home care.
To clean the eyes on a daily basis, use iLid
and Lash gel to soften the crusts around
the eye, which makes it very easy to re-
move. Look for any hairs protruding into
the eye. It is very important to keep hair
off of the corneas (surface of the eye). If
you cannot safely trim the
hair around the eyes, take
your pet to the groomer
or your veterinarian for
this task. If the condition
worsens, your vet may refer you to a Board Certified Ophthalmologist.
