MONSIGNOR’S SABBATICAL—PART IV
Modern Israel is a thriving, tense and deeply religious place. When one talks about Jerusalem all the above needs to
be underlined. Whenever in the Tantur program we had questions about the modern situation in that city and
country, we heard one word over and over again: complicated.
Take public transit for instance. Jerusalem has two main companies of buses: Arab and Israeli. Arab buses go to
some place (the old city and Arab East Jerusalem) and the Israeli buses go to Jewish West Jerusalem. They have
different fares and different rules.
The nearest grocery store to the place when I lived (the sprawling campus of Tantur) was in Bethlehem — yes that
Bethlehem! Bethlehem is right next to Jerusalem but is in a different country: Palestine. To get there I had to walk 10
minutes to the Israel check point and enter another large city (it’s no longer O Little Town of Bethlehem). In
Jerusalem the official language is Hebrew, while in Bethlehem it is Arabic.
Luckily when I got to the grocery store they took the Israeli shekel. After my purchase I had to go to the giant wall
that separates the two cities and go through the check point again. This time I had to go through a metal detector
and answer questions as to why I went to Bethlehem. There are guards all around with machine guns! Once past the
checkpoint I walked to Tantur — all for a tube of toothpaste! Complicated!!!
This tension was brought home to me one day in the Arab quarter of the Old City. I was walking in the crowded and
narrow streets filled with Arab men, women and children. Walking towards me in the middle of this colorful
Arabian tumult was a lone Jew dressed all in black. He was about 18. As he got to within a foot of me someone
behind him pushed him very hard hoping to know him down. Instead, he collided with me and angrily turned
around to fight. Everyone froze. Shopkeepers looked terrified. The Israeli soldiers all around the street lifted their
machine guns. I would love to report that I reacted in a Christian way and helped bring peace. Unfortunately, my
Brooklyn upbringing kicked in and, with clenched fists, I was ready to fight. Luckily some shopkeepers intervened
and spirited the offending Palestinian into a nearby shop. Things went back to normal as quickly as they erupted.
This was a small incident but it spoke so clearly of the amount of peace work that needs to be done in that holiest of
all cities.

My name is Francisco Javier Hernandez Anguiano. I was
born on September 16th in the city of Puebla, Mexico. I
lived my childhood in Atlixco, south of Puebla. My
parents, Rosalia and Manuel, always taught me humility
and the desire to overcome any obstacle in life. Their
teachings were very important to me growing up.
I am the fifth of six children, two sisters and three
brothers. In my family, love and respect towards one
another have always been very important parts of life.
My youth was the most beautiful and important stage of
my life. At a very young age, I met the one and only love
of my life, Juana, my wife with whom I live to this very
day. I thank God for having brought us together.
I was educated in a Catholic elementary school. It was a
very important period of my life because I learned about
God, and I learned how to live with God. I thank my
parents, family, and teachers who always advised and
guided me to serve and love God.
My higher education concluded in the trade school
Tecnológico – Industrial (Industrial Technology). I
graduated as a technician, a trade that allowed me to
work.
Arriving in this country, I always had to face many
obstacles. I had to go overcome them. I knew that
winning in life was not easy. I have always had
the inclination to help the needy. I could feel their many
spiritual needs. Upon learning about the diaconal
service, I felt a great inclination to be a part of
the evangelization. It is my desire to serve the
community.
Today I am filled with joy to know that I've been able to
achieve my dream of being an ordained Deacon to serve
my church with humility and patience for the Glory of
God.

LIFE IN THE TRINITY
The name of the Trinity is, without a doubt, the most
familiar sacred name to us. We speak it every time we
make the sign of the cross, and it forms the heart of our
Creed. Trinity Sunday is a good day, however, to stop
and reflect on the unique role of each of the three
persons we name so often in the Trinity and in our own
lives. When we celebrate the Eucharist on Sunday, we
come together as the Body of Christ through our
baptism, and through the power of the Holy Spirit we
offer the whole prayer of the Mass to God the Father.
This presence of the Trinity does not stop when we leave
church on Sunday. We are—always and everywhere—
members of the Body, and everything we do as members
of that Body is empowered by the Holy Spirit, all of it
offered to the glory of our loving Father.
Take a moment each day this week to reflect on how the
persons of the Trinity were present to you during the
day, and how other people came to see the presence of
the Trinity in your witness to the Good News.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The liturgy seems reluctant to return to Ordinary Time
from the joys of Easter, and so the festivities extend to
today’s celebration of the mystery of God’s relationship
to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Gospel today
centers the question of our relationship with God in the
struggle of Nathaniel to believe that it is possible to
experience “rebirth” in the Spirit. The answer of Jesus is
that God’s response to the messes of this world is the
mystery of saving love in Jesus Christ and the
outpouring of an empowering Spirit.
Western church architecture often tops a church
building with a spire, indicating humanity’s reach to a
transcendent God. The Eastern Church responds with
onion-shaped domes, indicating the Spirit’s being
poured down upon humanity precisely at this locale,
the gathering of the faithful for the Divine Liturgy. This
familiar design encodes a great mystery: here, at the
Lord’s table, we experience the outpouring of the Spirit
for the life of the world. Nathaniel came to Jesus by
night, since he was still working out the meaning of his
life. A life attuned to the inner life of the Trinity must
always be given to the light of day.

HOLY TRINITY
The Father is my trust, the Son is my refuge, the
Holy Spirit is my protection. O holy Trinity, glory to
Thee.
