GENERAL
FINE ART
On behalf of the board, staff, faculty and members of Hui No‘eau
Visual Arts Center, it is a delight to welcome you to the 21st annual
Art Affair auction and benefit, Camelot at Kaluanui: A Feast of Art &
Merriment.
Since its inception in 1934, Hui No‘eau has aimed to ensure that access
to the visual arts is part of everyday life on Maui. With the mission of
unlocking creativity through exceptional visual arts education, we truly
believe that art has the power to improve individuals, our community and
our future.
Tonight we gather in support of future artists, leaders and thinkers as we
“Raise our Paddles” for Hui youth programs. Designed to offer highquality visual arts education and cultural enrichment to every interested
child on Maui regardless of their socioeconomic background or artistic
aptitude, Hui youth programs provide the tools, mentors, and space to
spark the creativity of Maui’s young artists. Through sequential-based
workshops, artist residencies, field trips, collegiate portfolio reviews,
exhibition opportunities and more, our goal is to increase accessibility
and participation in arts education and reinforce the positive impact
of the visual arts on the social, cultural, and economic wellbeing of our
community.
We wish to express our deepest appreciation to all of you for joining us
tonight, and to the individuals and local businesses that generously gave
their time, energy and donations to this event. We hope you will enjoy
this incredible evening as we come together to celebrate Maui’s arts
community!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
RECOGNITION AWARD
Stephen Freedman adds, “Years of professional and personal friendship have
presented a man I have come to know, an arts educator of incredible power and
vision, belied by humility and a subtle, terrifying wit. The words ‘community’ and
‘art’ are linked by Hui No‘eau and Darrell Orwig, inspiring a generation of our
island art appreciators to step up and participate in establishing a unified vision for
this aesthetic melting pot community, which mirrors so clearly our emerging global
community. Thanks to you both.”
“This is sort of overwhelming,” remarked Darrell in response to being named as this
years Angel recipient, “I am stupefied and amazed. In the 37 years that I have been
here, the Hui has become such an integral part of the community. In the beginning,
we were a volunteer recreational center – volunteers turned the horse stables into
ceramics studios, the basement and dairy into a photography lab; everybody pitched
in to make this place work. Today, the Hui is a bastion of artistic integrity in terms
of the quality of what is offered and presented – accessible to all from small kids to
elders. It’s a place where opportunity thrives. This is the place for Maui to find out
what to do with creativity. I’m just happy to be a part of it”
We’re happy you’re a part of it, too, Darrell. Thank you for all that you do.

Maizie, it is with great delight that we present you with this award. Your generosity
and steadfast support have made a significant impact on this historic organization.
Mahalo nui loa for your commitment to the Hui and for your significant contributions
to the advancement of the arts on Maui.
“Everybody loves this guy for sure — he’s a fighter; he never gives up on getting
a job done; he just has this zest for life,” remarks Jan Kasprzycki while warmly
remembering his wild and crazy friend who convinced him to climb one of the
property’s Norfolk Island Pines almost 40 years ago during a storm that “must have
been blowing 50 - 60 knots. We climbed so high that the diameter was only about
10 inches around, and we were frantically swaying 20 feet in either direction!”
PACKAGES
“In late 2004, Maizie called me and said, ‘Kaluanui has been sold, we have to do
something’,” recalls Hui Vice President John Hoxie, Jr., “We did do something and
Maizie served as Honorary Chair of the successful ‘Save the Hui, Buy Kaluanui’
campaign. Thanks, Maizie.”
Darrell and his wife Mary (the Hui’s loving
CPA) began their Hui history as Kaluanui
caretakers and artists-in-residence, living in
the Hui’s Artist Cottage from 1976 - 1985,
during which time Darrell used the library (now
the Kaluanui History Room) as his painting
studio. From his retirement as Director of the
Schaefer International Gallery in 2005 through
present day, Darrell became an integral part
of the Hui’s exhibition program, acting as a
consultant, volunteering as a member of the exhibitions committee and rolling up
his sleeves alongside friends and fellow artist-volunteers Billy Welker, Rob Zaleski,
Jim Rhoades, Shane Robinson, Brian Miller, Rob Spencer and more to direct
installations in the Hui’s 8 annual rotating exhibitions. “These people just add so
much to Darrell’s utter love for the exhibition program,” says Mary.
POSTAGE STAMP ART
When asked to share some of her most vivid memories having grown up as part of
the Kaluanui home, Maizie responds, “It was amazing how the people of Maui and
beyond rallied to raise the $4 million (and a lot of good will) so Hui No‘eau could own
the whole property in 2005. The continuous care and maintenance of the house and
grounds over the years that preserve the architectural integrity of one of the fine old
historic homes on Maui (designed by Will Dickey) open to the public has been very
rewarding to witness. I remember seeing Johnny Baldwin running a small tractor on
the grounds in “hands on” work, grading the driveway to the parking lot. That is still
an important goal for Hui No‘eau: to maintain and expand without destroying. In the
early days of Hui No‘eau, my mother Frances Cameron, co-founder, enjoyed taking
life drawing classes at Kaluanui to continue her education in art. This is still a very
fond memory for me.”
Hui No‘eau’s Angel Award was established
to recognize outstanding artistic talent and
exceptional volunteer leadership contributing
to the advancement of the arts in our Maui
community. This year’s award is presented to the
one and only Darrell Orwig.
FINE ART
“The Hui means several things to Maizie, the most
important being Place, People and, of course, the
Art & Creativity,” writes Maizie’s daughter Claire
Sanford, “The Place has a deep connection to
Maizie’s childhood. Growing up next door, it is a
step back into her own past. The People include,
first and foremost, her beloved grandfather, Harry
Baldwin, and her grandmother, Ethel. And the
Art — to see Kaluanui’s spaces transformed into
galleries and classrooms while holding onto
the original grace is very important to her. I know that Maizie is incredibly happy
that this has become one of the legacies of what her grandparents built and what
her grandmother helped to start. And she has passed this love of Place, People and
Creativity onto me, her daughter. Kaluanui was at the center of so many amazing
gatherings over the decades and to see it become a place that now draws together
artists, art appreciators and those who just come to experience the beauty of the
property, is wonderful.”
ANGEL AWARD
GENERAL
The Board of Directors Recognition Award
was established to honor the extraordinary
contributions of individuals to Hui No‘eau Visual
Arts Center. This year’s award is presented to
Mary “Maizie” Sanford — a true champion of
Hui No‘eau.
