“Another World may be Possible - but not without Another Economy! Thanks to
these smart and savvy organizers/activist/academics we now have a game plan for
moving our neighborhoods, country and our world forward towards economic justice. Iam impressed by the depth of their thinking, their honest approach to the pros and
cons of alternative economics, and their ability to place their ideas within the framework
of a holistic system - whether it is the one we now live in or the one we are working to
move towards.”

Most of all, it’s an invitation to become part of an adventurous, experimental, worldwide
movement to build a solidarity economy. As the book shows, the movement is already
underway - it just needs you to join it.

Solidarity Economy
Network Website:
www.ussen.org
Solidarity Economy: Building Alternatives for People and Planet is a collection of papers and reports from the U.S. Social Forum 2007. This collection of twentyseven short chapters provides a window into the incredibly diverse solidarity economy
organizing going on in the U.S., as well as providing examples from Canada and Peru.
Inside is the work of some noted progressive thinkers, including a debate between Michael Albert and David Schweickart, a short article on spirituality by David Korten, and
a piece describing the real world practices of the solidarity economy by Ethan Miller.
Other chapters include an explanation of the monetary system through a Mr. Potato Head
metaphor, the voices of young immigrant-rights activists from the U.S. Social Forum,
a nuts-and-bolts description of worker cooperative structure, and description of ethical
consumption practices ranging from socially-responsible investing to dumpster-diving.
The book begins by defining the solidarity economy through visions and practices, and
subsequent sections describe how to build the solidarity economy through social movements, socially-responsible businesses, public policy, and daily practice. The last section
documents the birth of U.S. Solidarity Economy Network at the U.S. Social Forum,
with summaries of the caucuses and key documents. Learn about the growth of this
new economy, pushing through the cracks of our dysfunctional economic practices and
institutions with the combined wisdom of decades of social movement organizing.

“An indispensable guide to--and report on---the fast developing social economy
and the people who are making it happen.”
-Gar Alperovitz
author of America Beyond Capitalism:
Reclaiming Our Wealth, Our Liberty and Our Democracy
“There are incredibly few serious and practical efforts in the world today to not just
bemoan, however insightfully, existing economic relations- but to instead indicate
what we want in their place by describing new economic relations with new values,
new logic, and new structures. Yet this shared enivisioning can alone provide inspiration, guidance, and hope alike. You can’t build the seeds of the future into the present if
you have no idea what those seeds are like. Solidarity economics is one of those forward
looking, inspiration generating efforts, planting seeds today but seeking tomorrow - and,
as such, it is well worth attention.”
-Michael Albert
author of Parecon: Life After Capitalism, founder of ZNet
