Hard to believe the winter months are going by and spring is literally just around the
corner, within a month. Wow. It hasn’t been too bad of a winter, once again. With the
spring months coming up that means getting out on the boats and doing some sailing
or boating.
Also, with spring comes our AGM, which is scheduled for Wednesday, April 27th,
2016. This year it will be held at the Acropolis Steak House in the Merecroft Village.
The cost will be $25 per person, and I need to have names by Friday, April 22nd. You
will have a great choice of entrees to choose from, as you will see from the menu
included with this report.(on page 7) You don’t have to decide until that night as to
your favourite dish. Here is the agenda for the evening:

SPRING 2016
We were unable to run a Spring course due to a lack of registrations but we did
have a very successful Member’ Night with Tim Hobbes from Redden Net. His
mastery of ropes and splicing was fun to watch and try. Coming up on Feb.25th
Kevin Van Cleemput, and his staff, are hosting a Diesel Maintenance evening at
their Altech Diesel shop. This is limited to 20 so please let me know you wish to
attend.
Volunteers from the Squadron will be onsite for the Ocean Pacific Marine Show on
April 16th. Drop by and say Hi!
Upcoming Member’s events include:
- April 7th - Chartwork and Navigation – review and practice – 1830 hrs -at the St.Peter’s Church Hall.
- May (exact date to be determined) round Quadra boat tour - more info to come
- May 20-23 - Long Weekend trip to Gorge Harbour – everyone welcome
-June 9th - Evening slide show – Lionel Botting – cruising Quadra and Cortes – at the St. Peter’s
Church Hall - everyone welcome
- July 8,9,10 - Flotilla Cruise- we are hoping to incorporate the April, May, and June Member’s sessions
into a group cruise to the Quadra/Cortes area. We hope to see Power and Sail boats as well as all
levels of experience.

Boating. Our next Bridge Meeting is Thursday ,March 3rd at St. Peter’s Church Hall – 1700 hours –

Ship Watching - Capt. Geoff
Or should it be Ship spotting? With its great views of the primary North South channel of the
Inside Passage, Campbell River gets to see lots of ships. Some are one time visitors from around
the world, but a large number are from several dozen companies and organizations that transit
the passage consistently. How can you tell
which companies or organization the ship
belongs to?
Many companies and organizations paint their
ships in distinctive colours. The Canadian
Coast Guard is one good example. Ship
Watchers should be aware that the US Coast
Guard uses a very similar paint scheme for
their icebreakers (Their Buoy Tenders have a
black hull and white superstructure, and their
Offshore Patrol Cutters have white hull and
white superstructure; both also sport a red
stripe.)
CCGC Point Race
Some shipping companies don’t use a distinctive colour scheme for their ships, but may instead
use logos or colour schemes on their funnels. An example of this are some of the cruise ship
lines. Norwegian Cruise Lines, Princess, Carnival and others use mostly white for their hulls and
superstructure, but Princess has what I believe is a woman’s head (a princess?) with long hair
streaming out from it, while Norwegian often has a blue funnel with a crest on it. Holland America
uses a white superstructure with a blue hull, much like the Alaskan State ferries use.
Tug companies also use their own colour
scheme. With their low freeboard and
generous fendering, usually the hull is
fairly nondescript, but the accommodation
is often painted in company colours.
Probably the most well known on the West
Coast is Seaspan, with their white over red
accommodation.
There are several large US tug companies,
who’s tugs are routinely seen towing barges
to and from Alaska. Western Towboats have
white over yellow accommodation with blue

funnels and trim. Foss tugs usually have a
green hull with white and green superstructure. Dunlap is similar to Seaspan’s white over red, but
rather than a black and red funnel, theirs is white with a black D.

Among our local tug companies are Jarl towing with white over brown accommodation, and
Gowlland towing with all white accommodation.
Ship watchers used to have to listen to the Marine channels, particularly the traffic channels if they
couldn’t get close enough to see the Ship’s name. Even if you could determine the company from
the colour scheme, there was no easy way to figure out which ship you were looking at, leaving us
to leaf through old copies of West Coast Mariner and the like for clues.
Now we have many tools at our disposal via the internet. Most companies have websites with
galleries of photos, so if you can determine the company from the colour scheme, you can usually
figure out which ship you are looking at. Using AIS (Automated Identification System) receivers
or websites allows you to see icons ,representing ships, superimposed over a chart or map in real
time. Depending on the site, clicking on or mousing over the ship icon will pop up the name and
destination. There is a link to one AIS site that you can view for free in the Ripple Rock website
link pages.

New Ferry Cable Regulations for the Baynes Sound Channel
With BC Ferries’ new cable ferry – the Baynes Sound Connector – coming into service, it is critical for
all marine traffic (either operating or transiting) to be aware of the Navigation Protection Act’s regulation
pertaining to crossing over a ferry cable:

when the Baynes Sound Connector is in transit.

When the lights are green, this means the cable ferry is securely docked at
either terminal and it is clear for boaters to cross the channel.

When the lights are red, do not cross the channel. This indicates that the cable
ferry is in transit, and the cables may not be fully submerged underwater.

in the area to be aware of the ferry cable regulations.
