INDEPENDENCE DAY
JULY 4, 2013
Variously known as the Fourth of July and Independence Day, July 4 th has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1942,
but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution (1775-1783). In
June 1776, representatives of the 13 colonies, then fighting in the revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare
their independence, and two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by
Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4 th has been celebrated as the birth of the American independence, with
typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

Dave’s Low Country Boil (recipe from allrecipes.com)
Ingredients
Famous in the Low Country of Georgia & South Carolina. This boil is done best on
an outdoor grill, but works on the stove too. It has sausage, shrimp, crab, potatoes &
corn for an all-in-one pot.
1-1/4 teaspoons seafood seasoning
3-4 ears corn on the cob
(such as Old Bay), to taste
(husks/silks removed)
2 pounds new potatoes
2 pounds whole crab, broken into pieces
16oz package cooked kielbasa sausage, 1-1/2 pounds fresh shrimp, peeled and
cut into 1 inch pieces
deveined
Directions
1.
2.
Heat a large pot of water over an outdoor cooker or medium-high heat indoors. Add Old Bay seasoning to taste, and
bring to a boil. Add potatoes, and sausage, and cook for about 10 minutes. Add the corn and crab; cook for another 5
minutes, then add shrimp, and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
Drain off the water and pour the contents out onto a table covered with newspaper. Grab a plate, napkins
and a refreshment and enjoy!!
Joke: What did big bucket say to the little
bucket?

to their collection— baby polar bears Luna &
Kali!
Fact: Three hundred American soldiers froze to
death in Buffalo during the War of 1812….victims
of poor planning & worse equipment. They were
buried in a meadow. In 1896 came a placement
of a bolder marking the spot. The mound can be
th
found on the 4 hole on the Delaware Park Golf
Course…next time you’re in the area pay your
respects!!
