So you want a website...
Chameleon Graphics’ website development
service can do far more than just design you a
nice looking website. You decide what you want
your website to do and we’ll build it for you.
Our website development services include:
Ÿ
Simple brochure sites to present your
company’s products or services.
Ÿ
Secure e-commerce online stores which allow
your customers to buy your products directly
from your website.
Ÿ
Booking systems for hotel and hospitality
markets.
Ÿ
Blogging facilities to keep your clients
informed of all your latest developments. Or
gossip.
Ÿ
Animated galleries and albums to show off
your work, projects or products.
Ÿ
Content Management Systems which allow
you to fully edit all the material on your site.
Ÿ
Unlimited email accounts which can be linked
to your website and can be set up on your
pc, laptop, tablet or mobile phone.
Ÿ
Integrated media such as music or video.
Ÿ
Integrated social media pages (Facebook,
Twitter, etc) which we can help you create if
required.
Ÿ
Very competitive hosting rates.
Ÿ
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) to get your
website noticed on the internet.
Ÿ
One-to-one training is available, if needed, to
enable you to take over the running of your
website and take care of content updates
yourself.
Ÿ
Regular update schedules can be arranged
and paid by direct debit. We would then
update your site at regular intervals
whenever you need new content to be
added.
Ÿ
Slick, modern and professional looking
website designs!
The basics...
We aim to fulfill all your web requirements. Our
policy is to provide the highest quality service at
the most affordable price, tailored exactly to
your particular requirements.
All our website prices include domain name
registration, hosting for the life of the domain (2
years for .co.uk names and 1 year for .com
names) and free email accounts. The domain
name and hosting must then be renewed, which
costs £40 per year for .com or £40 for two years
for .co.uk. domains.
If you want to continue using your googlemail,
hotmail or yahoo email addresses, you can have
all mail from your domain (including those sent
through your web page contact form) forwarded
on to another email address.
Your own name can be used to register the
domain name if you wish, and the admin contact
for the domain name can be either yourself or
Chameleon Graphics. The domain name can be
transferred to another host at any time if you
wish, and if you already have a domain name, we
can transfer it to our host if required, which is
what we would recommend if we are building
your website. If you host your site elsewhere, we
cannot be responsible for any problems which
may arise with your host’s servers, i.e. you
would have to contact them, not us!
The back page of this brochure details the most
common types of websites we create. However,
since each site is developed individually to suit
your needs, there are many other options and
technologies available to achieve different types
of content for bespoke websites.
If required, we can arrange:
Ÿ
Logo design for your website / business.
Ÿ
Photography for your website.
Ÿ
Animated graphics such as Flash movies.
Ÿ
3D “virtual tours” of places to explore.
Any content of this sort would cost extra, the
amount depending on the nature and complexity
of your requirements. Pricing for a website which
includes content such as this (which you could
not normally supply) would be worked out on a
bespoke basis. If you want a basic brochure site,
we have a standard price for such a thing. If you
want 100 new photographs taken to put in your
gallery, or an animated banner, these are not
included in the basic price. Ideally, this would all
be discussed at your initial meeting with us.
What you need to do...
If you want a professionally designed website, there are some things you really need to know...
Don’t be tempted to let your friend, little brother, or your ten year old son design your website. It will
only result in frustration, anger and possible loss of hair. We’ve seen some very bad websites. Don’t
allow a business you have worked hard to establish to become ridiculed by an amateur web
presence. The standard excuse for this lapse of judgement, “I got it for nothing”, is usually muttered
in a rather embarrassed tone.
Come in and see us in our office. You can discuss your requirements with us in a relaxed and
confidential situation with a nice hot cuppa. We have many customers who have had websites
designed in the past by amateur geeks working from their bedroom. Inevitably, these people can’t be
relied on, located or even contacted if some important work needs to be done to the website in a
hurry. If your so-called web developer insists on having private business meetings in a supermarket
cafe, you know you’re asking for trouble.
Let us look after your site and hosting. If you buy your domain yourself and have it hosted
elsewhere, we cannot be responsible for maintaining the site; if your site goes down or is damaged
by hacking, you’d have to contact the hosting company, not us.
All the content for your website must be supplied by you. All text, pictures and other media should
be supplied as digital files. Our prices are good but they do not cover the time required to decipher
and typeset multiple pages of handwritten text. Photos and other images can be supplied by email or
on disc or memory stick. Do not EVER ask us to copy text or images from other people’s websites.
That’s called stealing. We don’t do theft.
Type up the text (or get someone else to!) content for your website on a word processor and put
down everything you want your visitors to know about your business. Too much information is better
than not enough. It can always be edited later. Don’t expect us to create reams of text about your
business. We have had customers tell us in the past: ”I thought you would write that for me.”
We at Chameleon Graphics are designers,
printers and signmakers. Contrary to the
beliefs of some, we are not builders,
electricians, joiners, plumbers, musicians,
lawyers, estate agents or deep sea divers. You
should know more about your business than
anyone, so you tell us what to include on your
website. If you want a novel published, you
wouldn’t ask your agent or editor to write it for
you. The same goes for a website.
Another “complaint” we have heard before is:
“You haven’t updated my website for a year!”
If you don’t have an update schedule, or you
haven’t actually given us any new content,
don’t expect us to just make stuff up to add to
your website whenever we have a spare half
hour (which we never have anyway!)
This is where using a Content Management
System becomes the best thing invented since
sliced bread. Although personally, I like crusty
loaves that you slice yourself, as you can make
the slices as massively thick as you want, but
that’s not really relevant here. The Content
Management System allows you to log into the
site (the back end we call it) and from there
you can use the System to Manage the
Content of the site yourself, hence the name.
Using this system, you can add new pages,
edit text, add photographs, and make many
other changes to your site. You can also create
new User Accounts to allow others to log in
and access these facilities. Or you may want
to have several contributors who can all post
new articles onto a site blog.
We much prefer our clients to do the content
updates themselves as we don’t really have
the time to keep dozens of other people’s
websites up to date. But if you insist on paying
us cold hard cash to update your site now and
again, well, okay then!
Another thing you can do with a Content
Management System is totally annihilate your
website, so you have to be careful! Different
levels of User Account access are available,
from enabling you to add text, pictures or new
pages to having complete control of every
aspect of the site’s design and underlying
code, which can be very dangerous!
What we need to do...
There would normally be three main stages to
the development of your new website:
1)
At the initial meeting with our web
developer, a job sheet would be filled out
and a design brief (based on the type of
site you require) agreed upon, together
with the price for the project. If you wish
to go ahead with the website, a minimum
deposit of 50% of the agreed price must
be paid in advance. Your domain name
would then be purchased (or transferred
to us if you have already bought one
elsewhere) and a hosting account set up
for your site. If you have seen some other
websites you particularly like, give us a
note of the addresses or show them to us.
It can be very helpful to know what sort of
look you would like for own site based on
other sites which you admire. Or indeed
let us see exactly what you don’t want to
your website to look like!
2)
Sample pages would then be created
before a second meeting to verify we are
heading in the right direction. This would
normally be a couple of weeks after the
first meeting. If this goes satisfactorily,
we would then agree on a time-scale for
the completion of the project and a date
sometime before this for a third meeting,
which again would normally be after
another couple of weeks. All content for
the website should ideally have been
supplied by this time, together with an
additional 25% of the agreed price. Basic
brochure sites would be done in half this
time and more complex sites may take a
bit longer, but the time it takes to
complete the website will depend entirely
on how quickly the content is supplied to
us! Don’t leave it until the last day before
we are due to meet up, then send us 20
pages of text and 100 photos and expect
the website to be finished the next day!
3)
A third meeting should see the project
nearing completion, although there would
almost certainly be some additions,
alterations and corrections to be made.
The remaining balance of 25% should
then be paid, and once any fine-tuning is
done, the site would go live.
