Letter from Board President
Curtis Landherr
Dear Friends,
I am honored to be serving my fifth
year on the Board of Directors of the
Ronald McDonald House Charities
of Kansas City, and my first year as
President after taking over from Diane
Gallagher at the beginning of 2014. On
behalf of our entire Board of Directors,
our exceptional team of talented and
committed staff and volunteers,
and the families we serve each day and
night, thank you so much for your continued support.
Your gifts of time, talent and treasure are greatly
appreciated and valued. We absolutely could not do
what we do without you.
On any given night, 67 families find themselves in
one of our homes. Not only are they facing the burden
of childhood illness and often frightened by the prospects
of what they’re going through, but they are also
trying to maintain some semblance of family order
and trying to do so without incurring too much of a
financial burden. That’s where we (and you) come in.
Our core mission of doing what we can to help reduce
the burden of childhood illness on children and their
families is brilliant in its simplicity and in its power.
In moments of great stress, our ability to provide
simple gifts like a healthy, home-cooked meal in a
loving environment, a warm bed and a hot shower
are priceless gifts to our families. We know that
because they tell us so time and again.
2013 was a very successful year for the Charity, but
the demand for families needing our services
continued to grow. We turned away over 1,000 families
due to the space constraints at our houses, which is
why we embarked on a capital campaign to build a
third Ronald McDonald House in Kansas City.
No families should have the added
stress of finding a place to stay while
they are dealing with childhood illness.
When we are needed, we want to be
there - every time.
When the new house opens at the end
of 2014, we will be able to serve 20
more families each night. Please know
that while we are focused as a Board
to help make this dream a reality on
time and on budget, we’re also focused
on ensuring that our teams have the resources they
need to maintain our two current Houses and Family
Room.
On behalf of all of our Board members and our families,

try to make families’ lives a little bit better during

When doctors told us Reese had leukemia, we were devastated. And
it only got worse when we learned she would also need a bone marrow
transplant as a result of high-risk chemotherapy. But whether she
was going through pre-transplant chemo or receiving outpatient care
for the transplant itself, I knew we had a place to call home in Ronald
McDonald House Charities of Kansas City. Having a place to stay
and meals provided eliminated so many worries.
It’s been a difficult and emotional journey for us, but Ronald McDonald House has given Reese
and our whole family everything from a place to stay, to pet therapy and live music, to the comfort
of a caring, friendly staff. We have always felt cared for and supported by all RMHC-KC has to
offer and couldn’t be more thankful for everything they’ve done for us.
