This store is under the direct management
of Sanrio, the company world famous for its

Junkudo Sendai Store
The Junkudo store, with its vast inventory of 500,000 books, is
Tohoku’s largest single store space. On the sixth floor, you will find
foreign books such as maps and guidebooks. Foreign magazines,
paperbacks, and Japanese texts are found on the seventh floor.
Desks and chairs are provided to make your visit comfortable and
relaxing. Coffee is available for a nominal charge.

Kenzo Paris, Sendai Shop
Kenzo, the most reputable Japanese fashion boutique in Paris, has
a shop in Sendai, where you will find all the special items for which

Ouchiya
Any woman would love to visit Ouchiya at least once. This is one
of the largest ladies’ lingerie stores in the Tohoku region, carrying
all the most famous domestic and foreign brand names along with

The famous Laox multimedia discount store is located just a

Fujisaki
The distinguished Fujisaki department store calls Sendai home.
This location actually consists of three buildings. In addition to the
eight story main building, you will find the Annex Omachi, featuring

makes Fujisaki a popular destination.

The Sendai location of world famous Yodobashi Camera, located

How amazing it is to find such a huge variety of household goods,

with a few choice souvenirs. Japanese folk crafts, kites, yo-yos,
masks and fans make perfect choices.

Forus
All the floors of this fashion building are filled with shops made
famous in the fashionable Tokyo districts of Harajuku, Aoyama, and
Shibuya, as well as the boutiques of top fashion designers such as
Issei Miyake, Kenzo, and Takeo Kikuchi. Bargain sales always draw
long lines, which start forming in the early hours of the morning.

S-Pal
Within Sendai Station, there is a fashion center lined with shops
bearing famous names, and on the basement floor is a dining plaza
offering Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisine, along with fast
food. Various local Sendai specialties are available, as well. The
second floor is connected directly to the ticket gates for JR lines,
while the third floor leads to the Shinkansen bullet trains.

Abbott’s Frozen Custard
Abbott’s is a well established ice cream shop in the U.S., and this is
the chain’s first shop in Japan. With Miyagi’s fresh milk and cream
as primary ingredients, its products are made without processed
milk and artificial colorings. The junior size sells for ¥200, and the
regular size starts at ¥300. This ice cream always tastes freshly
made!

Koban-Zushi
Great tasting sushi is, of course, a matter of the topping and rice
used. The popular Koban-Zushi restaurant uses only locally caught
fish, which are immediately placed over ice to maintain their
freshness. The rice, too, is particular to Miyagi. Prices are clearly
displayed, so you can eat without concern. The price of nigiri sushi
sets starts from ¥1,000, and the recommended course starts at
¥3,000.

Ajiyoshi
Ajiyoshi is a Chinese noodle restaurant popular for a delicious
flavor that is not too heavy. You can choose either extra thin or
thick noodles according to your taste. Chashu, sliced roast pork,
is also very popular. Prices start at ¥580. What’s more, from 4 - 9
p.m., Monday through Thursday, all dishes are served at ¥100 off
regular prices. At the Kokubuncho branch, customers who bring
this guidebook can receive a ¥100 discount anytime.

Tamzawa Sohonten
Tamazawa is a specialty store for lovers of wagashi, or Japanese
sweets. It serves various Japanese desserts, including anmitsu
(chilled sweet bean jam with fruit), a Japanese traditional treat, with
an assortment and menu that changes according to the season.
During lunchtime, Tamazawa even offers original box sets. Cream
anmitsu is ¥700.

Doutor Coffee Shop
This famous chain of coffee shops boasts 770 stores across
the country, including 16 in the Sendai area. At Doutor a cup of
delicious coffee is just ¥180. If you need to rest your feet after a
morning’s exploration, why not take a break here? Hot dogs start
at ¥190, sandwiches at ¥380.

Yukimura
This café, in addition to serving regular meals, offers the sweets
favored by women of Japan: oshiruko, zenzai, and mitsumame
with sweet beans. The menu features homestyle dishes such as a
domburi bowl of rice with toppings, Japanese style zosui risotto,
and kamameshi rice cooked in a pot with a variety of flavorful
ingredients. Prices for zenzai start at ¥500 and kamameshi at ¥780.

Unaki
Here is a restaurant that is really particular about eel dishes. In
order to bring out the best taste, eels are carefully broiled one by
one on a charcoal brazier. The store chooses only thick-bodied
eels, which are delicious. Prices range from an economical ¥1,050
to ¥3,000.

Sushikan
Sushikan is famous for fresh fish and reasonable prices. The sushi
is made by highly skilled sushi chefs right before your eyes, and of
course, it is delicious. The prices for nigiri start at ¥800, and course
sets from ¥2,200. All prices are readily displayed, so you can enjoy
your favorite selections without worrying.

Tomaruya
This much loved yakitori grilled chicken restaurant prepares fresh
chicken over a charcoal flame. Its specialty is a salty, tender
young chicken that is best eaten with the hands. Foreign visitors
are especially fond of the rustic, home cooked taste. Prices are
reasonable, too. Shinkoyaki (salt-grilled half chicken) is ¥1,100,
and yakitori goes for ¥160 and up per skewer.

Kirara-Zushi at Sendai Station
As the area’s most affordable kaitenzushi “conveyor belt” sushi
shop, Kirara-Zushi offers every topping one could desire, such as
sea-urchin roe, salmon roe, sweet shrimp, and more, at just ¥90
per dish. Also, try ramen Chinese noodles at ¥180, or a choice of
soba buckwheat or udon wheat noodles at ¥130 each. Don’t let
the low prices fool you, though. The taste and serving sizes are still
impressive. At Kirara-Zushi, you can eat as much as you wish and
cover the bill with ease!

Ramen-do Sendaikko
This Chinese noodle shop could not be more particular when it
comes to soup. In fact, a rich soy sauce taste is the house specialty.
It has many enthusiastic fans who cannot help savoring every last
drop of soup. The restaurant’s special Sendaikko ramen is ¥600,
and hikiniku (ground meat) ramen is ¥800.

Motown Café Sendai
Theme restaurants, a popular genre in the U.S., have made a name
for themselves in Japan, as well. At Motown Café Sendai, you will
find homestyle cooking and a feast of savory soul food, along with
your choice of drinks, all served up in a fun and funky atmosphere
with Motown music in the background. Live performances of the
café’s private artists are shown hourly from 6:30 p.m. daily, giving
the place a distinctively American atmosphere.

Sankichi
Oden, a Japanese stew with fishcake, vegetables, and other items,
is a traditional winter dish. Here at Sankichi, though, you can enjoy
it even in the summer. Up to thirty different ingredients are gently
simmered in a special soup stock, which is made of dried seaweed
and sardines from Aomori Prefecture. Prices start at ¥50 for each
ingredient. The restaurant also serves kiritampo (toasted sticks
of rice paste), a specialty of Akita Prefecture. For a real taste of
traditional Tohoku region, this place is the genuine article!

This shot bar is very much in the old American tradition, complete
with classical jazz for background music. Prices are reasonable
too, with whiskey starting at ¥250. Its customers are mainly office
workers in their forties. This little spot is also popular with Sendai’s
foreign residents.

Miyanobori
“Chanko” is a special dish originating in the time honored world of
the sumo. It’s made of vegetables, meat, fish and udon noodles,
and is a highly satisfying way to fulfill your nutritional needs. Prices
range from ¥2,500 upward per serving. The restaurant’s interior
is decorated with the handprints and pictures of famous sumo
wrestlers. It’s a fun way to get a taste of this fascinating culture.

Cake & Tea Kenzo
Cake & Tea Kenzo is one of Sendai’s best loved cake shops. In
addition to the to go option, you can enjoy delicious cakes inside
the shop. Kenzo’s popular cake set costs just ¥100 plus the price
of your favorite cake, and it comes with your choice of English tea
or fine coffee. There are two additional Kenzo stores in front of
Sendai Station and in Kokubun-cho.
