Solutions to help your hoof trimming business succeed
Winter Sprays
Q. With
the cold
weather fast
approaching,
some dairy
producers will
be putting footbaths up for the
season and not running them
again until Spring. What does
this mean for the professional
hoof trimmer in the spring?
A. It means more warts,
treatments and wrapping.
Sprays are available that
would make it easy for your
dairies to spray their cattle
during the winter months to
help keep wart counts down.
Our Recommendations:
Quickhit FootBath
Concentrate
• Mix 13 gallons of water
with ½ gallon of QHFBC
and 10 lbs of copper
Quickhit Topical Spray
• No need to mix, just
spray to the point of
runoff twice daily for 4-5
days
Healmax Spray
• No need to mix, just
spray 3-5 sprays once or
twice either on the same
day or consecutive days
Double Action
• Mix 16.5 oz per gallon of
water and saturate feet
2x daily for 14 days
Rotational Zinc
• Mix 1 part of Rotational
Zinc to 3 parts water
Winter, Wraps & Warts…
In hard economic times, managing the details drive results.
By Dr. Andy Bohnhoff, ANIMART Professional Services Veterinarian
The brisk bite in the air is the annual introduction to the Fall
Season and most of you are coming into the slower period of
trimming. Over the upcoming months, focus will transition to
more blocking and wrapping to help animals recover from the
stress of the summer heat. In addition to using wraps in this
way, they are effective against hairy heel warts. In both cases,
wraps are an effective approach; however, there are some key factors to
cover with your producers to maximize their benefit.
Depending upon the specific hoof issue, it is important to remove wraps
from the cow’s foot rather than waiting for it to fall off. Most wraps need
to be removed in 3-5 days. Typically, producers should leave wraps on
for no longer than five days for an abscess. This is plenty of time for the
active ingredients on the wrap to penetrate the wound to facilitate the
healing process. To address a wart three days is ample, as typically they
will heal quickly with this type of direct application.
When wraps are left on for extended periods of time, they create more
problems than the intended solutions. Wraps can create physical damage
to the hoof. Over time, as the animal moves, the wrap will create friction
and cut into the lower leg and hoof. This cuts off blood supply, creates
swelling and causes an infection. Wraps may also restrict the flow of
blood to the laminae and papillae, which may cause them to die. This
dead tissue in turn causes swelling and pressure within the hoof wall
causing significant pain.
The best way to maximize wraps for abscesses or warts is by cutting
them off in a timely manner. However, many producers or farm hands
may be reluctant to remove them due to the time restraints, the risk of
getting kicked, and the overall difficulty of the process. To address these
concerns, we suggest you recommend to producers the Wrap Buster™.
This tool quickly and safely removes hoof wraps without having to bend
down or get too close to the cow. It has a double edged blade for cutting
from multiple angles and a blunt tip so it will slide between the hoof and
wrap without injury.
