COPO Gen 6 Debuts
Drag-strip Camaro sports new trim,
at SEMA look; powerful engine options.
The COPO Camaro is officially back, and more stunning than ever. GM unveiled the newest
generation of the legendary, drag strip-only Chevrolet Camaro at the Specialty Equipment
Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, Nov. 2.
The newest COPO was built off the template of the all-new Gen 6 Camaro
that made its debut as the 2016 model-year Camaro this fall. This marks the fifth
consecutive year GM has produced a modern-era COPO Camaro. The specially
built, limited-production car has its roots in a special order Camaro GM produced
only once before its resurrection in 2012. That was in 1969, when GM built a
limited number of what came to be known as Central Office Production Order
high-performance Camaros.

Chevy and Chevy Performance
Make Impact at SEMA Show
For more than 100,000 automotive professionals, the annual
pilgrimage to Las Vegas served up the sights, sounds and sheer
excitement that drive a multi-billion-dollar industry.
Chevrolet booth visitors got a firsthand look at the full lineup of new models for
2016 including new looks and features for the agile 2016 Camaro, as well as a 2016
Silverado personalized by Realtree® and Bone Collector™ Michael Waddell.
For “cool factor,” look no further than the 2016 Chevy Camaro Krypton concept
vehicle. For a mere $80,000, you can apply this electroluminescent paint that, with
the flip of a switch, activates an illuminated graphic of Chevrolet bow ties on the
doors and fenders.
Chevy Performance wasted no time in making its mark with the announced
return of the legendary COPO Camaro program in 2016. True to its 1960s heritage,
the limited-production-run COPOs will
consist of just 69 vehicles. These racetrack-only powerhouses will once again
be sold through a lottery to some lucky
Camaro enthusiasts. Visit www.chevrolet.
com/performance/copocamaro/ for your
chance to purchase a 2016 COPO Camaro.

ATRA Gives GM
Great Exposure for

For the second year in a row, the ATRA Powertrain Expo
was held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The show
ran from Thursday, Oct. 29 through Sunday, Nov. 1.
GM booth at ATRA stayed busy.
The GM Transmission Team enjoyed a steady flow of visitors
throughout the show. Stacie Kraysovic, Product Manager Transmissions
and Advanced Technologies and crew saw transmission professional after

displays of a GM 8-speed transmission, 6-speeds and TEHCM modules.
Showgoers were able to meet engineers and other GM technical staff and
learn about the products and services that GM offers through its parts
dealer network.

GM Replacement Transmissions
Offer Value to Shops and Customers
One of the keys to selling highdollar parts like transmissions is
offering value.
Just ask Mitch Holmes, owner of Aroostook Auto Tech
in Houlton, Maine. During the winter months, his shop sees
a steady line of work vehicles from the area’s plowing and
timber businesses needing replacement 4-and 6-speed
transmissions. For him and his customers, using Genuine
GM Parts just make sense.
Holmes points out that GM transmissions arrive
tested and guaranteed. They carry a 3-year, 100,000-mile
warranty that covers both parts and labor on new and
remanufactured models.
“Getting the labor included is huge,” Holmes says.
“If something happens to that transmission, my time
is covered.” Just as nice, his GM Parts dealer can deliver
transmissions usually the same day, the next morning at

the latest.
Because they’re
built to factory
specifications, GM
transmissions are ready for trouble-free installations.
Should Holmes have any questions, he has quick
access to live technical help. One call to the GM Powertrain
Contact Center at 866-637-2787 puts him in contact
with GM professionals. The Center provides immediate
assistance with installation and parts information, along
with ordering assistance.
That adds even more convenience and savings—in time
and money—for shops and customers. Benefits like those
can lighten the load on the heaviest of repair jobs.

Prepare for Cold Weather
with Guaranteed, Cost-Cutting GM Transfer Cases
As temperatures drop across the
country, accumulations of mud,
ice and snow build. So do the lines
of customers needing replacement
transfer cases for hard-charging
pickups, SUVs and 4X4s.
They’re looking for quick service, affordable options
and durable parts to get them back on the road and trail
for the long term. Genuine GM Parts has them covered
on all three points.
Long-term reliability comes with the 3-year, 100,000mile warranty that covers both parts and labor on all GM
transfer cases. That includes new and cost-cutting GM
remanufactured versions.
The guarantee alone makes GM remans a serious
upgrade over rebuilt aftermarket options. GM has ramped
up the value even more. Aftermarket rebuilds typically
just swap out worn components with new ones. GM goes
several steps further. Its remans also receive a host of
other new components, updating them with the latest GM
Engineering enhancements for long life. Then, the reman
supplier machines the transfer cases to ensure that they
meet OE factory specifications.

Equal Parts Revolution and Evolution,
the Chevy 350 Engine Keeps Building its Legend
As 2015 comes to an end, some reflection
on automotive history is in order:
• Sixty years ago, GM turned the keys on a revolution
when it introduced the small block V8.
• A decade later, it fired the shot heard round the
automotive world when the 1967 Camaro roared
out of Detroit sporting its version of the small block,
the Chevy 350.
• Today, a legend remains alive and well as the 350
continues thrilling gear heads and picking up new fans.
Its enduring reliability and pliability found the 350
a home in numerous GM models over multiple eras. It
powered performance heavy vehicles like the Corvette,
Impala, El Camino, Chevelle and Nova. Showcasing its
versatility, the 350 then moved into large road cruising
Buick and Oldsmobile sedans, along with luxurious
Cadillacs. The reliable “little engine that could” even made
its way to full size vans and trucks, including the Hummer.
Rock solid engineering.
There’s plenty of reason to believe the future remains
bright for an engine forged during the birth of rock and roll
and built during the dawn of muscle. It all comes down to
rock solid engineering and adaptability.
During a 16-year run in production vehicles, the 350
continually evolved in power and refinement. Horsepower
more than doubled from 145hp-370hp. Fuel efficiency rose,
emissions dropped sharply and new technology was added,
though the fundamental design remained the same.

Duramax Line of Diesel Engines
Continues to Grow, Innovate
Repairers used to share a joke about the
most effective vehicle anti-theft device—
the word DIESEL stamped on the back.
Times certainly have changed. Today’s diesel engines are
quiet, clean and in demand. GM’s Duramax lineup has done
its part to change the diesel game with their trump card,
industry-leading innovation.
That will be on display when the newest Duramax diesel
ramps up the torque in the 2016 GMC Canyon and Chevy
Colorado. The Duramax 2.8 liter generates 369 lb-ft of peak
torque at 2,000 rpm, boosting tow ratings to over 7,500
pounds using a turbocharged four-cylinder platform. Yes, a
four-cylinder engine will be churning out those numbers.
Engineered for fit and reliability.
6.6L V8 Duramax LBZ
Production years: 2006–2007
Power: 360 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque
Standout feature: The LBZ quickly became a favorite for
tuners thanks to a stronger block and new piston design,
larger connecting rods and heads that could handle more
pressure.
6.6L V8 Duramax LMM
Production years: 2007–2010
Power: 365 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque
Standout feature: Duramax became significantly cleaner
to meet strict new federal emissions standards, while
also adding power.
Despite rugged Neanderthal-like power, Duramax
engines benefit from state-of-the-art technology and
fine tuning. The best way to swap out those power plants
or parts is from the local GM dealer, whose parts are
engineered for an easy fit and long term reliability.
That’s nothing new for Duramax. Here’s a look at 15
years’ worth of changes that rocked the diesel landscape.
6.6L V8 Duramax LML
6.6L V8 Duramax LB7
2.8L 4-Cylinder Duramax
Production years: 2001–2004
Power: 300 hp and 520 lb-ft torque
Standout feature: Received the “Best of What’s New
Award” from Popular Science magazine and chosen two
consecutive years by Ward’s magazine as one of the
“Ten Best Engines in the World.”
14
Dec 2015 – Jan 2016 ServiceInsights
Production years: 2011–present
Power: 397 hp and 765 lb-ft of torque
Standout feature: Engineers boosted horsepower,
added a whopping 105 lb.-ft. of torque, slashed
emissions further and enabled 20 percent biodiesel
mixtures.
Production years: Introduced 2016
Power: 188 hp and 369 lb-ft of peak torque
Standout feature: After five years of duty overseas,
the 2.8L comes to American shores to be showcased
in top selling mid-sized pickup trucks.

Air Shock/Strut
ReplacementTips
Tips
GM
Air Shock/Strut
Replacement
When servicing the air shocks/struts on 1995-2003 Oldsmobile Aurora; 1997-2005 Buick Park Avenue; and 2000-2005 Buick
LeSabre and Pontiac Bonneville models equipped with the automatic leveling system, there are several steps to take for correct
installation and a proper repair. The leveling system will add air pressure to the shocks to raise the vehicle up to a level ride height
under all types of load conditions. The system has a “no load” operating pressure of only 10-12 psi.
Verify Compressor Operation
Before replacing the air shocks/struts (P/N 504-165), verify
that the air compressor on the vehicle is cycling. The air
compressor must pressurize and maintain pressure in the load
leveling system.
Turn on the ignition and listen for the compressor to cycle. It
should cycle on approximately 30-45 seconds after the ignition
is turned on and then run for approximately 5-10 seconds to
pressurize the system. The compressor will only cycle at each

Test the System
After installation, testing the system is critical to ensuring
damper endurance and proper operation. The system must
maintain minimum operating pressure. Before test driving the
vehicle, perform the following procedure to check the system
for proper function:
• Start the engine and let it run for 1.5-3 minutes.
• The air compressor should cycle on and off within 3
minutes.
• If the compressor cycles on and off, add approximately 200
lbs. in the cargo compartment of the vehicle. It is necessary
to compress the vehicle suspension approximately one
inch to activate the compressor and level the vehicle. The
air compressor should cycle on to level the vehicle within
1.5–3 minutes.
• If the vehicle levels properly, proceed to test drive the
vehicle.
Replace the Air

Spring to Enhance
Performance
On GM vehicles
equipped with a

can be increased
by replacing the
spring in the air
compressor dryer. A

The new spring will increase the minimum operating pressure
of the leveling system to 25 psi. This is required for enhanced
operation of the replacement shocks/struts.

6-cylinder engines experiencing
a hard start or extended crank
condition, or black smoke from

are several basics tests to perform
during diagnosis.
First, verify fuel quality. Next,
perform a compression test. On V6
engines, there should be 150–185
psi average compression. No cylinder
should be less than 140 psi. On
4-cylinder engines, there should be
170–200 psi average compression.
No cylinder should read less than
100 psi. Also install a vacuum gauge
prior to a cold start and watch the
needle for signs of a sticking valve.
In addition, perform a fuel system
check. The following tests should be
done after an overnight cold soak.
Set up the vehicle with the CH48027 Digital Pressure Gauge or
equivalent and J-37287 Fuel Line
with Shut-Off Valve or equivalent.

Genuine GM Rewards for Maine
Shop Owners
An old saying declares that a happy spouse is
the key to a happy life. Genuine GM Rewards
and parts are helping this ring true for some
Maine shop owners.
Lori Holmes, co-owner with husband Mitch of Aroostook
Auto Tech in Houlton, Maine, recently treated herself to a
new iPad after redeeming her Rewards points. Mitch didn’t
mind being left out of the transaction. He’s basking in the
other benefits of doing business with GM Parts.
“They provide a 3-year, 100,000-mile warranty that
covers both parts and labor,” says Mitch. “That gives me a
tremendous amount of comfort.”
A big part of that comfort is the confidence that comes
with using parts that keep hardworking customers on the
job. Sitting in the midst of timber country and the Snow
Belt, Aroostook Auto Tech does big business replacing
pickup truck engines and transmissions used for hauling
and plowing.
Just last year, the season’s first storm dumped 18
inches of snow in the area. When Mitch pulled into work
the following morning, seven plows already were lined
up needing service. None could afford to be left waiting
around for repairs.
Quick Deliveries Get Customers Back
on the Road
For Mitch, that was no problem. “Our parts dealer is
120 miles away but can get us anything we need either
that day or by the next morning,” he says. “We always get
excellent service.”
The shop also gets tested and guaranteed parts it can
expect to hold up over the long haul. That fact led Mitch to
do a double take last winter when one of the seven plows
returned a week after a transmission job needing another.
He couldn’t accept parts failure. Some quick detective work
uncovered the true culprit—operator error.
The inexperienced, youthful driver was burning through
transmissions because he wasn’t plowing properly. Mitch

refused to let him leave the lot until he personally
conducted an impromptu training session to avert a third
preventable visit.
Typically, most Aroostook customers don’t require
quite that level of attention. Mitch says he simply covers
their service options and they usually opt for GM Parts.
“Customers appreciate the value,” he says.
Points Add Up Fast
The icing on the cake is the GM Rewards points adding
up with similar ease. Aroostook’s dealer rep even made
shopping more convenient by helping to set up the shop’s
account on the Genuine GM Rewards website. Lori says
redeeming points is a breeze.
She’s even considering letting Mitch in on the fun,
eventually. “I might let him pick something out—if I like it
too,” she says mischievously.
Since they’re both happy, that sounds like a solid plan.
