Springtime and new birth: just around the corner
Triumphant scenes at another successful Caythorpe Dash
Over one hundred and seventy people took part in the 4 th running of the Caythorpe Dash,
a Half Marathon, an event for teams of four (two men and two women) and individuals.
running through the Lincolnshire countryside. Starting at Caythorpe Playing Field, the
route went through Stubton, Gelston, Hough
-on-the-Hill and back into Caythorpe.
At the British Heart Foundation Tea Party from left:
Angela Turner, Sue Case and Deanna Hammond
The weather was very cold, temperature below freezing and, with the rain and snow we
had over the week, the course was very
muddy & slippery, especially over the
various wooden stiles the competitors had to
negotiate. However, after a few falls, cuts
and bruises, all the competitors successfully
finished the run. People ended the day with
a good hot shower and a scrumptious feast in
the Pavilion.

St Nicholas Church Normanton on Cliffe
St Nicholas Church has been in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, with local
key holders opening and locking the church daily. The church annual maintenance and
electricity is paid for by the Trust and local donations may help towards covering some
of the costs associated with this.
The Trust is aware that there has been a recent breakdown in local management and
would like to consult with local residents, the parish council and the PCC to develop a
more sustainable management plan at the church.
It is for this reason that I am writing to invite any interested parties to a meeting at the
church on Thursday 26th March, beginning at 6pm.

This referred to everyone coming along wearing something red for
fun and in doing so would be raising money to beat coronary heart
disease, this country’s biggest single cause of death. Everyone
made the effort and red tops, hats, scarves and shoes were in
abundance. The tables were filled with everyone chatting, eating
their cakes and enjoying their afternoon tea or coffee, there was a
lovely atmosphere.

fabulous cakes. We received more homemade cakes and over
twenty more raffle prizes were donated by supporters.

There was an opportunity to “Guess the Number of Feathers in a four foot Feather
Boa” for a £2 donation; Sue Deavin was the winner of the cash prize for being the closest to the correct answer of 784. The first prize in the raffle was won by Ellie Pocock
who will be enjoying Sunday Lunch for two at the Red Lion kindly donated by John
Cork. All of the cakes were either eaten during the afternoon or sold to take home,
leaving just the crumbs to sweep up!
Two raffle prizes are still unclaimed, they are pink ticket no: 68 and yellow ticket no
291.
We must not forget the help we gratefully received on the day from Angela Turner, Sue
Dix, Sue Deavin, Deanna Hammond, Tony Case and Carol and Nev Tointon without
which we would have struggled. Thank you very, very much everyone.

Caythorpe Short Mat Bowls Club
From: The Revd Alison Healy
On Tuesday 10th February at the AGM a new committee was elected consisting of
Chairman Ann Russell, Secretary Christine Clipsham, Joint Treasurers Robina Heald
and Carol Tointon and Committee Members Bob Sampson and Robin Dickinson.
It has been a very successful year for the club with six new members, bringing the total
membership to twenty-one. Each week around a dozen men and women meet to bowl
and some weeks there have been as many as sixteen or seventeen players.
This is a very friendly group and many social occasions are planned throughout the year:
10-pin bowling, meals out, games afternoons, parties etc. The club meets at Caythorpe
Village Hall on Tuesdays from 2-4p.m. Contact 01400 273090.
Caythorpe Village Hall Defibrillator
the things that we would rather were kept
hidden in the dark about ourselves and our
behaviour will be brought to the surface
and exposed to the light.
Can anyone provide information as to why this defibrillator was collected from the
site - but not used - and returned during late afternoon on Sunday 8th February?
The main issue is that once the machine is removed, whether it has been used or not, it
has to be checked to ensure it is in full working order and in a state of readiness for
future use.
If you have any information please ring Bob Greybrook on 01400 272611. All calls will
be treated with strict confidence. Thank you.

So here we are at the beginning of Lent preparing to
enter the wilderness with Jesus to deny ourselves and
take up prayer and considering others needs before our
own. Our prayer is that we will not be tempted beyond
our limits of endurance and our hope lies in the risen
Christ 40 days from now. It need not be a time of unremitting doom and gloom however and there seems little
point in ‘giving up’ things for Lent if it is done out of
superstition or concerns for our looks rather than our
innermost souls! The idea is that by engaging creatively
through the discipline of contemplation and prayer all

I am sure that for some of us this could be a
daunting thought…and yet others of you
might think that you cannot reconcile the
idea of a loving God with all the suffering
that there is in the world; and not least that
you cannot understand why God called
Jesus his ‘beloved’ and ‘Only Son’ would
then allow Him to die in agony on a cross.
It was a simply wonderful evening as I’m

The Valentine's Ball held at the Caythorpe & Frieston Village Hall on the 14th February,
was a resounding success with over eighty ball-goers all helping to swell the Arnhem

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT RESIDENTS ARE AWARE OF HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
ALWAYS DIAL 999 FIRST!
The operator will advise if there are first responders on duty, if not they will
advise of location of nearest defibrillator to you, and give the code for accessing the cabinet.
If possible ask someone – family or friend to fetch the defibrillator, you should
start and continue with CPR. Do not leave the patient alone
The defibrillator will automatically give clear and concise spoken instructions
as to how to use it
Continue with CPR and the defibrillator until such time as a paramedic arrives
and takes over
When treatment has finished the defibrillator must be returned to the cabinet
and the co-ordinator, whose telephone number is shown on the inside of the
cabinet door, must be advised that it has been used, this will enable to unit to
be restored to a state of readiness for future use.
This successful and popular event is in its 6th year, thanks
to the dedicated passion of organisers Doreen Taylor and
Iris Gerrard. Behind the scenes there is an army of
committed people whose help is invaluable. Adrienne
Guyer-Taylor volunteered her time and single-handedly
produced three superb courses for everyone's enjoyment. Peter Taylor & Helen Giddings worked tirelessly
furniture shifting, glass washing, clearing up, etcetera.
Thanks must also go to Mandy Binns and her team of PGL Staff who manned the bar
and served at table so splendidly along with all the other young folk who gave up their
time to help.
Many local businesses, pubs, restaurants, hair salons and beauty parlours donated
generous table and raffle prizes. Their support is greatly valued. Of course, those of
you took part made the whole event a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We look forward
to seeing all of you next year.

John Cork landlord of the Red Lion recently made presentations to the two local
organisations - £275 to the LIVES First Responder Group, this consisted of £200 from
the collection box on the bar and £75 from donations collected after the Boxing Day
walks organised by Pete Rushmere. The Community Heartbeat Project received £350
from John's monthly quiz night's entry fees and a donation from him.
A further donation to the Community Heartbeat Project was received from family and
friends of the late Geoff Baxter. Geoff was 89 years old, the youngest of five children.
He lived in Caythorpe until 2010 when he moved into a care home in Lincoln following
the death of his beloved wife Vera. In his younger days Geoff played football & cricket
for the village teams and also helped run weekly bingo sessions to raise funds for the
Village Hall. The message with the donation was that "money donated in Geoff's
memory should be given to a village project that benefits the community"

From: Archdeacon Brian Lucas CB
Sir - In the February 2015 edition of News
and Views, the Reverend Alison Healy
wrote of “problems which have beset the
[St Vincent’s] church for many years”. As
the last Rector of Caythorpe, before the
freehold title was suspended following my
retirement, I would like to set the record
straight by stating unequivocally that I
experienced only loyalty, kindness and
total support from people throughout the
village of Caythorpe and Frieston, as well
as from parishioners in Fulbeck, Carlton
Scroop and Normanton, from my appointment in March 1996 until I retired in
September 2003. The problems to which
she refers must be very recent.
Football:
In football we have recently played three games. The first game was against Our lady
(Sleaford) and we won 10-0 against them. Our second game was against Chestnut Street
we again won 9-0 and last but by no means least we played against Osbournby.
Unfortunately we lost 2-4 and even though we lost one game we still won two.
It was because of this friendship throughout the benefice that we remained here
after retirement, and we continue to thank
God for all the good people around us.
Written by Charlotte in Year 6
May I conclude by saying how pleased I
am that you have continued to produce the
parish magazine under the title, News and
Views, and that you have maintained and
enhanced the high standard to which we
have become accustomed.
It only takes
a few minutes to let
everyone know
everything about your
event.

I agreed with the Bishop of Lincoln to
accept the appointment for five years, but
stayed for nearly eight as the congregations
were such lively and good company. In
fact, the whole gamut of parish life was
good, and my wife and I had many memorable and vibrant experiences, ranging
from the joy of the Sung Eucharist on
Easter Day to a ‘Pub Night’, when Joy
accompanied the singing of old pub songs
after supper in the Village Hall. Many will
remember the variety of excellent guest
speakers from London at our annual St
Vincent’s Dinner, and our Harvest suppers
were not complete without David Theaker
leading us in the Lincolnshire Poacher!
I note with interest some comments the
Revd Healey made in the February
edition. I was not aware that there had
been problems at St Vincent's for many
years. I know both Brian Lucas and June
Freshney are much loved and much missed
with in our community and served us with
pride and dignity for many years.

Caythorpe Primary School
Inspire + Legacy tour
On Wednesday 4th February we received a special call from Sarah
Outen. When she called, we had an opportunity to ask her three
questions and get the answers. We found out that she is an explorer travelling around the
world using only human power. She has called her
journey ‘London 2 London: via the world’. When
we spoke to Sarah, she was in America and we
spoke to her on a satellite phone.
Two children from Marston school came and passed
on the legacy oar to us on which we wrote down a
little message of good luck for her and sent it to
another school to continue the messages of
encouragement. The oar will go to Sarah Outen
when she gets back from her incredible journey.
As part of the legacy tour, we also got given a bike
and we had the rest of 24 hours to pedal as many miles on the bike as we could. We
reached 65.5 miles and although we didn’t win, everybody enjoyed doing it and it was
very fun.
Caythorpe School’s Sporting News
Netball: On 2nd February we played a netball match against Helpringham - the score
was 6 all ,so it was an even game and everybody
enjoyed playing in it. We also had another netball
match on the 9th February which was against
Claypole. They won 10-6 but it was a fun game.
Our most recent fixture was a tournament on 11 th
February and we came 3rd place overall in our
league. We played extremely well and it was a
great team effort!
Volleyball: At the volleyball tournament we
played 4 games, winning 3 and losing 1 . It was a
well-played tournament and we did very well.
Zumba: On 2nd February some children from
Zumba club put together a routine and
performed it against five other schools at
Kesteven and Sleaford High School Select
Academy. We performed to ‘Price Tag’ by
Jessie J. We didn’t win but we all had fun.

Excellent Concert by the Hungate Singers
Caythorpe-Relief-in-Need
On Saturday 24th January some seventy people welcomed the return of the Hungate
Singers to St. Vincent’s Church. I am sure they all enjoyed the programme and the very
welcome soup and desert supper in the interval.
Charity No. 217632
Caythorpe-Relief-in-Need Charity was formed in the 1970’s as an amalgamation of
several small local charities. The earliest of these was a will of 1753.
The objective of the Charity as stated in the founding document is:… shall be to relieve either generally, or individually persons resident in the Parish of
Caythorpe who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress. Additionally the Trustees
may make grants of money and/or goods to organisations in the Parish of Caythorpe
which are involved in the education, support and welfare of individuals or groups within
the Parish of Caythorpe.
In exceptional cases, the Trustees may grant relief to persons otherwise eligible who are
resident immediately outside the Parish of Caythorpe.
The Charity has an annual income of about £175 so its resources are pretty limited. If
you are involved with a parish organisation, or are aware of anyone who might benefit
from a small grant, please contact one of the Trustees.
It was very gratifying to see so many there on such a miserable evening, and thanks to
them £291 was raised for Church funds. Our grateful thank go to them, the singers and
also all the people who contributed to the supper. (See photo on page 28 - Ed)

Parish Council News……March 2015
Parish Council elections……The Parish Council is coming to the end of its current
period of tenure which will see all members having to decide whether or not they wish to
stand for office again. We have eleven members of the Parish Council and if more than
that number wish to stand then an election, held on the same day as the General Election,
will be required. If there are eleven or less no election will need to take place. I would
like to thank all of my fellow Councillors for all their hard work and wish them well if
they decide to stand for again.
District Council elections…..In addition to the above District Councillor Bob Sampson
will also reach the end of his current period of tenure. The work that he has done in
supporting your Parish Council as well as acting on behalf of many of you as individuals
has been tremendous. We have very much valued his constant support which has made
our job so much easier. We wish him well in the forthcoming election as an Independent
candidate for the newly named ward of Loveden Heath.
Dog fouling….It has been brought to our attention that the incidence of dog fouling on
our pavements and footpaths has again reached an appalling level. All dog owners are
reminded that it is an offence to let their animal foul any public area. I am sure that it is a
small minority of dog owners who are responsible which can of course wrongly get all
dog owners a bad name. If you are able to supply any member of your Parish Council
with details of a dog fouling incident that you have witnessed then please do not hesitate
to do so.
Local Plan……SKDC are in the process of drawing up a new plan which will set out the
vision and objectives for the district, establish the amount and location for growth and
development and guide the form, scale and type of future development. A copy of the
draft plan is on the SKDC website and comments from individuals have to be submitted
no later than March 6th; we will be discussing it at our next meeting.
Forthcoming meeting ….The next and last meeting of your current Parish Council will
take place in the Village Hall on Wednesday 11th March. The meeting will commence at
7.15pm when residents are able to comment on and draw matters to the attention of the
meeting and then to stay and list to but not participate in the main meeting which will
commence shortly there after.

The playing fields are a valuable asset for the entire village
and for those who visit when participating in the various
sporting activities that are organised on a regular basis. The new path will increase the
numbers who are able to enjoy the facilities and it is part of an ongoing investment in the
property. Our thanks again to the Big Lottery Fund.

Fifteen ladies attended the inaugural meeting of the club and five sent their apologies.
As a group, the ladies decided they would like to meet twice a month on the 2nd and 4th
Thursday between 2.00 pm and 4.00 pm. Cost for each meeting will be £2 per person.
The first meeting will be on Thursday 12th March in the village hall lounge. The
theme will be " Show and Tell"; this will enable those very talented ladies to
demonstate and share their craft-making skills which will result in the new group
acquiring new talents. Do come along and join us.

CAYTHORPE & FRIESTON ALLOTMENTS
Although it has taken a long time, the Parish Council is pleased to announce that work
is soon to begin on the establishment of allotments on land adjacent to the burial ground
off Gorse Hill Lane in the village of Caythorpe. This has been made
possible following several years of commitment and financial backing
from Caythorpe & Frieston Parish Council, in conjunction with a
substantial grant from the ‘Big Lottery Fund’.
Also huge thanks have to be given to G R Ward & Co for their help in
preparing the land and general advice, and assistance in getting the site
ready for occupation. The first stage will involve the construction of a
widened access, car parking for up to six vehicles and fencing of the allotment area.
An ‘Allotment Association’ has now been formed which will manage the day to day
operation and administration of the site, complying with the terms of an agreement that
has been drawn up by the Parish Council.
There are still a few remaining plots available to residents of Caythorpe and Frieston
and consideration will be given to sub division of a plot. If you are interested in renting
an allotment further information and an Application Form can be obtained from the

Lincolnshire Energy Switch Scheme Nearly 5000 Lincolnshire households have
joined forces to get a better deal from energy suppliers making the County’s residents
one of the biggest groups to secure better electricity tariffs from the electrical energy
industry. To find out more about the scheme simply visit SKDC’s St Peter’s Hill
offices in Grantham with a copy of your latest electricity bill, or alternatively call the

Renewable Energy is currently a local topic on two fronts. Firstly, the Temple Hill
planning application Ref S13/2699 submitted by RWE proposed 5 wind turbines at
Temple Hill, (Hough Grange Farm), is due to go before the SKDC Development
Control Committee Tuesday 17th March 2015 in SKDC Council chamber, time to be
confirmed. Secondly, following the recent EnergieKontor public exhibition at Stubton
Village Hall concerning the proposed wind farm at Fulbeck Airfield, the latest
proposals has been revised to ten turbines each 110metres (361ft) high, with a blade
diameter of 92.5metres (303ft). They intend to submit their formal application within
4-6 weeks to SKDC. A survey is currently being conducted throughout all the nearby
parishes to establish the public reaction to this latest proposal. Please respond with
your views when you receive the leaflet with four straightforward questions.
School Transport Recently a public meeting was held in Claypole for parents to
discuss the Lincolnshire School Transport Policy Catchment Areas, which have
remained the same for 40 years without meaningful review. The aim is to make the
policy fairer and free school transport available to those pupils in rural areas outside
the present catchment area set out in the present policy. To register your support,
please consider signing the School Bus Petition http://

Caythorpe and District Garden Society
Our guest speaker in February talked not about a garden, but a great estate. Ray Biggs,
manager at Grimsthorpe Castle, used slides of historical plans and documents and
portraits of the family, who have owned the castle since Tudor times, to take us through
a thousand years of history of the site from its likely origins as the homestead of a Dane
named Grim.
In 1147 Vaudey Abbey was founded close to the site by Cistercian monks, who became
very rich from the wool trade. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII and its lands
became the property of the Willoughby family. The foundations of the building now lie
within a wood and only the fish ponds and deer park remain.
The abbey stones were used in the construction of a Tudor mansion, incorporating a
watchtower from earlier times. Over the centuries, as fashions changed, both the house
and grounds were remodelled on a grand scale several times, though there were periods
of neglect when the owners chose to live elsewhere.
After two world wars and the social changes they brought, the staff required to maintain
such a large estate were hard to find and more manageable formal gardens were
designed. The parkland is now a valuable refuge for native plants and animals, with
ancient oaks and several SSSI within its boundaries and both park and house are open to
the public from April to September.
Many thanks to Ray for his fascinating account of one of our local landmarks.
Our speaker for March will be Pam Tatam from Hall Farm Gardens, who will talk about
annual plants that ‘Live fast and Die Young’. Visitors (£3) and new members (£12) will
