On the 26th of April, we broke a new record
in Canada at our nucleus farm
13 weaned per farrowed sow
at 20 days average weaning age
At the beginning of April we
reached 15.2 born alive at the nucleus
farm (pure-lines sows). The person in
charge of the farrowing barn was on
vacation and we were preparing a large
gilt order for a customer. So to utilize our
labor efficiently, we made the decision to
do very little fostering and to leave the
maximum piglets with their respective
mothers. Some sows weaned 15 pigs, no
nurse sows were used!
On this farm, the farrowing unit
is equipped with Gestal automatic feeders
that increase the average daily feed intake
per sow. In order for the best sows reach
100 kilos of weaned pig at 21 days of age,
you really need maximum feed intake to
maintain your productivity! With an

Sow identification
(utilizing the gestal feed system in conjunction
with an excellent lactation ration), we are able to
achieve these excellent numbers of piglets weaned
and litter weights . Note that we do not use any
top-dress for parity 1 sows!
