2016 Spring Homes Tour
and Luncheon
“With more than a slight nod to the historical….”
Once again the CCDC invites everyone to share in the joy of helping a worthy cause while enjoying a delightful Sunday spring afternoon. Meander through a variety of charming and unique homes
ranging from the wonderfully historic to the very most up-to-date! Plan
to make a day of it as your ticket ($25) includes a delicious luncheon
served at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Served from
11:00–2:00, lunch will be catered by Andrew Merritt of Occasions
at Wedgefield. So spread the word, save the date, gather a carload of
friends or family, and get your tickets! (See back page.)
Because every single dollar goes into
the CCDC scholarship fund to provide top-notch, affordable pre-school
education for those
who need it, we
tremendously appreciate the support
of all our amazing
sponsors. So many
individuals,
area
businesses,
and
local organizations
have come forward
with financial sponsorships. A legion
of volunteers works
behind the scenes
for months planning
and organizing the
event and many help
on the day of the
tour, guaranteeing
that
everything
runs
smoothly.
Many thanks to
all our sponsors, volunteers, and the homeowners who so graciously
open their homes for all to enjoy!
Carpooling is encouraged and the homeowners especially appreciate
having the tour guests park as efficiently and considerately as they can.
And remember, it’s all about the children…and contributing to the
CCDC scholarship fund. The overwhelming research on the lifelong
benefits of a positive pre-school experience brings us right back around
to “a good beginning never ends.” See you May 1st!
CCDC Happenings
Hats Off to
Volunteers
April Is Child Abuse Prevention
Month
On Martin Luther
King Jr. Day, 15 Clemson University students
volunteered at CCDC
from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
They added more Tumble Safe mulch to the
Clemson University’s Silver Wings
playgrounds, and cleaned
group members spread tumble safe
classroom shelves, rugs
wood chip on the playground.
and cafeteria tables and
chairs.
Miss Clemson University Scholarship Pageant contestants
volunteered at CCDC several days in January, and donated
paper goods and other
supplies they collected.
The pageant is administered by CU Mortar
Board, whose members
volunteer every month at
CCDC.
The following community service groups also
come often to spread
Clemson University’s Gamma Sigma Sigma
mulch, care for infants,
Sorority members work on an art activity
read to children, do craft
with the three year olds.
activities, play outdoors
with children, cleanse
sleeping mats, classroom shelves, and toys, and do office work:
Clemson University’s Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Alpha
Kappa Psi Business Fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity,
Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority, and Silver Wings; and Daniel
High School’s Interact Club and Beta Club. In addition, CCDC
parents, individual area students, and community members devote countless hours to volunteer at the Center. We are grateful!
April is Child Abuse Prevention month.
Once again, the CCDC is partnering with
Pickens County First Steps and the Parenting
Place to become a “Pinwheel Garden”
site. Our children will plant 60 pinwheels
in the front yard the first week of April
to show our support for “Pinwheels for
Prevention.” The project raises awareness of
this important issue, spreads the word about
prevention work being done in our community, and promotes
the protective factors every family can adopt. Participating sites
will donate $1 for each pinwheel to help support the Pickens
County First Steps scholarship program.
CCDC Celebrates Dr. Seuss’s Birthday
Guest reader, Marian
Vischer, dressed as The
Cat In the Hat, prowled
in March 2 to read Dr.
Seuss books to our twoyear-old, three-year-old
and 4K classes in celebration of the author’s
birthday. Ms. Vischer,
from Pickens County
First Steps, also played
an Opposites game with
the children, brought
books she donated to our
library, and left craft materials for the teachers to
use in their classrooms.
CCDC Classrooms Introduce Zoo-phonics®
All classes will now be using the highly successful program, Zoo-phonics®, to teach
the alphabet and the sounds of all the letters. This program uses animals formed in
the shape of the lower case letters to help children associate the beginning sound of
an animal name they know with the shape of the letter making that sound. Fun-todo body movements reinforce the learning and serve as memory cues. The Center
purchased one Zoo-phonics® Teaching
Kit and we are extremely grateful to
Pickens County First Steps for providing
us with a lesson plan book, and
additional Zoo-phonics® cards and CDs
for every classroom.
Soon children and parents alike will
be bending and twisting to create all
the Zoo-phonics® creatures! Have fun
learning all 26 together!
A is for Allie the Alligator.
2
U is for Umber the Umbrella Bird.

A Grateful Parent Shares . . .
I want to thank all the staff of CCDC for consistently creating a safe, clean, caring, encouraging, education-based daycare. My
son has attended the two-year-old class for a full year. The teachers, Johanna and Jessica, have always shown compassion, patience
and respect for every child. The teachers and assistants provide a full report daily for each child: behavior, emotions, potty training
progress, eating habits, learning activities the child took an interest in, and achievements. The teachers encourage the children to
listen to their body and respect their needs. I’ve seen days when a toddler is tired before nap time and the teacher will set up the
child’s “napper” then and encourage the child to rest.
I would like to acknowledge all the support staff as well—the administrators, teacher assistants, custodial staff and volunteers.
Every employee demonstrates cheerfulness and sincere dedication to creating a healthy, happy and welcoming environment for each
child. I especially want to express my gratitude to Director Sharon Hwu for upholding impressively high standards for her staff and
the CCDC families. The appreciation, trust and value I feel in having my son attend CCDC is a direct result of Sharon’s caring
disposition and leadership skills. I can speak from experience and say with confidence that CCDC definitely goes the extra mile in
helping all the families that make up the CCDC community.
Warmly, Bonnie J. Johnson

Meet CCDC's new board members
To our outgoing board members, Ruth Andreason and Barbara Clark, we simply
cannot thank you enough for all your generous support of CCDC. For Barbara’s endless involvement with the Education Committee and the newsletter, chairing the 2014
Homes Tour and helping with this year’s tour; and for Ruth’s oversight of publicity,
volunteering in the infant room, opening her home for the Homes Tour, and marvelous
decorating talents, we are forever grateful. CCDC would not flourish as it does without
the support of amazing board members like these remarkable ladies!
Now, we extend a warm welcome to our new board members!
Patti Hunnicutt
Patti is a passionate advocate for early childhood education. As
an educator of 35 years, she made a special effort to understand
the effect of poverty on learning in order to support all students.
Patti holds degrees in Early Childhood Education, Elementary
Education, and is an Educational Specialist in Reading. For
the past 12 years she has served as a Literacy Specialist with the
S.C. Department of Education, training Literacy Coaches via
presentations and in classroom settings. She is a past board member of Pickens County
First Steps. As a recent retiree, Patti looks forward to continuing her work advocating
for the best interests of students in S.C.
Vince Jackson
Vince began his career teaching in the inner-city schools of
Atlanta, GA. By attending classes at Georgia Tech, he eventually
entered the home remodeling business, renovating older homes
in many in-town neighborhoods. He met his wife Debbie while
working on her home. They have two daughters who attended
public school at Clemson’s Calhoun Bridge Center when it was
part of Morrison Elementary School.
Vince is currently chair of the Greater Clemson Music Festival which brings
performers to our area for a week of entertainment each April. Proceeds from the
Festival benefit local charities. For more information visit www.clemsonmusicfest.org.
Jackie Malloy
Jackie is an assistant professor of teaching and learning at the
Eugene T. Moore School of Education at Clemson University,
where she teaches English language arts and social justice courses.
She received her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with an
emphasis on literacy from CU and her teaching certification at
the University of Pittsburgh. Jackie taught literacy and research
at George Mason University to Master’s level students and
provided coursework for Teach for America. She was a Speech/Language pathologist in
Pennsylvania and West Virginia and taught emergent literacy in a K-2 classroom at an
oral school for the deaf in Pittsburgh. She has also provided speech/language services
through the School District of Oconee County.
South Carolina First Steps 4K Program
CCDC will again participate in the SC First Steps Program for the
2016-2017 school year, providing a high-quality 4K curriculum as the
foundation for future learning. Children who get an early start tend
to be more successful all the way through school.
This six and a half hour daily 4K program is free to eligible children who: (1) reside in Oconee County; (2) qualify for free/reduced lunch or Medicaid;
and (3) will be four years old on or before September 1, 2016.
Before and after school care is provided for a small fee. Please share the word if you
know of any families that could benefit from this program.
Reminder: CCDC’s 4K program is also available for a fee to other four-year-olds.
