DNK hosted a hugely enjoyable prawn
evening at Scandinavian Kitchen in
Great Tichfield Street at the beginning
of July. This last get-together before
we broke up for the summer holidays
attracted nearly 30 guests, and there
was a excited buzz on the evening.
Scandinavian Kitchen had sourced some phnomenally good
prawns which they served with a choice of mayonnaise or their
own aioli, bread and lemon.
The prawn feast was the first of our new series of new
and different events which complement DNK’s successful
traditional annual events. The cost of the evening was only
£25, including a glass of bubbly, canapés, reker, bløtkake
(cream cake) and more, so we hope to be repeating the
success in the coming months.
Please join us on Facebook for updates about forthcoming
events https://www.facebook.com/pages/Den-Norske-KlubLondon/201035826605173

NORWAY’S GRIEF
After the dreadful events that took place
in Norway last July, the whole country has
been struggling to come to terms with the
terrible loss of life and property. The attacks
on 22 July against the Government buildings
in Oslo and the island of Utøya shocked
the people of Norway to the core, but the
public reaction to these hateful acts of
terror has been heart-warming. The tragedy
has pulled the people of Norway together
in an unexpected way and given rise to an
unprecedented show of national unity.
“Together we make an unbreakable
chain of solidarity, democracy,
safety and security. That is our
protection against violence.”
From the prime minister’s address in the
aftermath of the acts of terror.
A NATIONAL MEMORIAL
CEREMONY commemorating
the 77 victims of the 22nd
July terror attacks took place in Oslo on 21st
August. The ceremony saw performances from
some of Norway’s most prominent artists and
was attended by 6,000 guests, including Royalty
and national presidents as well as the prime
ministers of all five Nordic countries.

King Harald and the Prime Minister of Norway both gave
speeches. The King, looking clearly moved, told the audience, “As
a father, grandfather and husband, I can only imagine your pain.
As this country’s King, I feel with each and every one of you.”
NORWAY’S DIGNITY – By Geraint Vincent
First published on ITN News 27 July, 2011 I’ve always wanted to
come to Norway
Everyone always goes on about its beautiful landscape, and I know
its vast wealth makes it an affluent, optimistic society. But what I’ve
learnt in five days of covering its response to the terrifying violence
of Anders Behring Breivik, is what a brave country this is, and how
fiercely its people protect their values.
I arrived in Utøya the day after the massacre on the island. The
first survivor I managed to speak to was a 19 year old student
called Eric. He broke down as he recalled seeing his friends
shot dead in front of him. I tried to bring our interview to a
quick close, but he stopped me — there was something else he
wanted to say. We must not close ourselves down because of
this, he said, Norway must stay open, welcoming and outwardlooking. Even in the depth of his trauma, he was determined that
his country’s ideals should remain intact.
The very centre of Norway’s capital has become an
extraordinary place this week. In the square outside Oslo’s
cathedral, there is a huge garden of flowers sitting on the
flagstones. Every day, hundreds of thousands of Norwegians
have come here to honour the dead, but also to demonstrate
their solidarity. There are no histrionics, no theatrical displays of
grief. The people just stand together, holding their flowers in the
air, in a powerful rejection of Breivik’s brutality.
Norwegians have done this before. When the German army
occupied this country during the second world war, they were
met by what became known as the ‘ice front’. The population
refused to speak to them, they even avoided eye contact
with the invaders. This infuriated the Nazis. Pathetically, they
passed laws in an attempt to enforce conversation. In the face
of a previous incarnation of Breivik’s twisted ideology, it was
another brilliant victory for Norway’s people.
As I leave my hotel to begin my journey home, there are
Norwegian flags flying everywhere — much more than usual,
according to my taxi driver. In the aftermath of the most ghastly
atrocity, these people have managed to generate an atmosphere
of hope and togetherness. At the airport shops, I’ll be filling up
my basket with Gravlaks and Jarlsberg, but I’ll try to save room
in my hand luggage for some of Norway’s quiet dignity.

Summer is over (did it ever arrive?)
and time has come to clad your limbs
in warmer threads. Being in Britain,
this of course means tweeds, glorious
tweeds, a fabric of rich heritage, much
pride, and above all excellent qualities
and outstanding beauty of colours and
patterns.
Traditionally reserved for the gentry during outdoor pursuits like
hunting, fishing and walking, it is now a fashion item for the younger
generations as well as still going strong with the traditionalists.

Still woven by hand
both in Scotland and
Ireland, the most
famous is perhaps the
Harris Tweed, woven
by the islanders of the
Outer Hebrides. The
depth of colour in the
weave is astonishing,

the processes and
dyes used are purely
natural.

DNK Spring Golf for
18 Keen Golfers
Effingham Golf Club which has
been a members club since 1927.
The course was designed by the
renowned golf course architect
Harry S Colt, and the 6,500-yard
downland course is set on 264 acres
of chalk downs with a wealth of
mature trees, and exceptional views
of London and its surroundings.
The Georgian-style clubhouse is a listed building dating from
1770 and is full of charm, and the DNK members and guests were
served hot coffee and pastries in the bar before heading out to the
driving range or putting ground to test the form of the day.
The Surrey countryside was basking in the spring sunshine as
we teed off in groups of three or four and enjoyed the wellkept, open fairways – and thought we were having a good day
until we met the challenging greens! The starter had warned us
about the greens, and he certainly knew what he was talking
about. Not an easy golf day after all! We had lots of fun and
laughs though, and the scores reflected that we had all been
concentrating on the golf at times during the play.
From left: Albert Schjelderup, Jens A Wilhelmsen, Chris Gowan and
Bjørn Bakkerud.
Drinks were served outside in the sun afterwards, and we then
enjoyed a lovely three-course meal with prize presentation.
Congratulations to all who participated and to the lucky ones
who won either DNK silver, Nordea umbrellas or both. We all
agreed we would love to come back and play this delightful
course soon again.

GLAMOUR OF THE GODS
DNK September Ladies’ Luncheon
We had a very pleasant Ladies’
Luncheon at the National Portrait
Gallery. They currently have a great
exhibition called “Glamour of the
Gods – Hollywood portraits”. Five
enthusiastic ladies from DNK had
coffee and biscuits in the Portrait Café
in the basement of the gallery, before
we arrived at the exhibition.
All of us really liked the photographs. “Glamour of the Gods” is
a celebration of Hollywood portraits from the movie industry’s
“Golden age”, the period 1920-1960. From Greta Garbo and Cary
Grant to Audrey Hepburn and James Dean, many international
style icons are featured. We know that the photographs played
an important role in creating and marketing the stars.
The DNK ladies’ favourite was a picture of Liz Taylor – young
and attractive!
After the cultural part of the programme, we had an excellent
two-course lunch in the Portrait Restaurant. The restaurant has a
lovely view overlooking Trafalgar Square.
It’s still possible to visit the exhibition at the National Portrait
Gallery. It stays open until 23rd October. We really recommend it.

National and international taxation is
changing. Are you changing with it?
Having the right investment strategy in times of market turbulence is not always all it takes to preserve and
grow wealth. Have you ever considered that inadequate wealth planning, from a taxation point of view, could
result in you losing some, or even all, of the gains that you have earned from your investments? From a wealth
management perspective, proper planning requires knowledge and expertise in complex, international crossborder tax legislation, not only to be in line with current legislation, but also to avoid paying more than you
are obliged to. We have these competencies, and are considered the best among our Nordic and Baltic peers
for providing a service of this calibre for you.*
