Is Dual Credit
the Right Choice for Me?
Expectations for College
What is expected of college
students varies greatly from
what is expected of high school
students.




Students who take dual credit
courses are beginning their
college career.
Students and parents should discuss
the level of commitment needed in
regards to their high school course
load and extra-curricular activities.

This is a serious commitment and
should only be entered into by
those who are ready to be
committed to college-level work.
Must exhibit maturity and social
behavior necessary to be enrolled in
a college level course

Remember!!! Dual credit classes
become part of your permanent
college transcript and impact
eligibility for financial aid and
scholarships!
Dual Credit students will be
academically challenged in a
college setting. Courses are
rigorous.
Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting
8
How Does it Work?
• Students typically take two courses in the
fall, and two in the spring term.
– Special approval is needed to take more than
two dual credit courses per term.
• Dual credit grades become part of the
student’s high school and college
permanent academic records
– High School Transcript
• A grade of “C” or better is required to receive
high school credit.
– College Transcript
• Students can graduate from high school with
up to 24+ hours of college credit. More hours
can be earned by taking summer courses.
Students enjoy the convenience
of taking SJC dual credit courses
within their high school daytime
schedule.
Dual Credit - Student and Parent Interest Meeting

Types of Dual Credit Courses
ACADEMIC

Courses (Texas Core Curriculum)
typically transfer to four-year
colleges and universities.
• Core courses meet the general education
or free elective requirements of an
undergraduate degree program

Students taking these courses
often plan to pursue a four-year
degree after high school
graduation.
Course offerings vary by high school.
Each ISD determines the course options available for
their students to earn college credit.
WORKFORCE
(CAREER & TECHNICAL)
 Courses may or may not transfer to
four-year colleges and universities.
 Students taking these courses often
plan to enroll in a certificate or twoyear degree program.
 Helps students become employable
upon high school graduation.
Workforce Programs: Process Technology
(PTAC), Instrumentation, Child Development,
Cosmetology, and Welding.

FERPA
(Family Education Rights and Privacy Act)
What is FERPA?
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
(FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the
privacy of a students educational records.
The law applies to all schools that receive
funds under an applicable program of the U.S.
Department of Education.
– When a student turns 18 years old,
or enrolls in an institution of higher
learning at any age, all rights
afforded to you as a parent under
FERPA transfer to the student.
– As college students, dual credit
participants are protected by FERPA
law and their information cannot be
disclosed.
However, there are options for
students who would like their
parents to receive this information.
– A student may log in to their student
account at any time to show the
record of grades to a parent.

Academic Freedom
ACADEMIC FREEDOM is
practiced at all San Jacinto
Colleges.
•
•
•
Some of the topics covered in college
courses may be controversial.
College is a time for students to
critically analyze information
gathered through K-12 courses and
confront questions without easy
answers.
College instructors will teach the
same course material regardless if it
is a dual credit course or has dual
credit students in the course.
Academic Freedom allows
faculty and students to pursue
whatever inquiry they feel is
important and to speak about it
in the classroom without fear
of censorship.
• Understand that within a college environment,
students may encounter adult language and
images, different philosophical viewpoints and
belief systems.
• Understand that appropriate and essential
discipline specific terminology, concepts and
principles are utilized as needed in the
classroom setting.

San Jacinto College (SJC) academic calendar starts and
ends on different dates than high school calendars.
You are required to attend SJC courses even if your
high school is not in session for a particular day.

taught by college approved instructors, students who
require accommodations may contact the SJC
Disability Services Counselor on campus for
assistance. 281-998-6150 ext. 3444

Students can apply for accommodations at any point
in the semester, but we strongly encourage students
