Palma Sola Presbyterian Church
The Agape Connection
Dear Palma Solans!
Although I never did adjust to winters up north, I always loved that feeling that “fall is in the
air”! Falling leaves, crisp weather, blue skies, apples and pumpkins everywhere! Now fall doesn’t
feel quite the same here in Florida, but at least we get some much needed RELIEF from the
heat. RELIEF?
When you think about it, our faith provides us a great source of RELIEF all year long, not just
in the fall! We find
RELIEF
from earth-boundedness in WORSHIP as we open ourselves to
God’s loving, truthful, and wise Spirit. We find RELIEF from the world’s false values in
STUDY as we encounter the light of God’s life-giving Word in Jesus Christ and in Scripture.
We find RELIEF from isolation in FELLOWSHIP as we support, encourage and challenge one
another. We find RELIEF from self-absorption in SERVICE as we discover the joy of a
purposeful and Christ-patterned life.
I know that the RELIEF from the cares and strains of life that I find through my life in
community here at Palma Sola is one of the primary ways that I am
“ReNEWed by Christ’s Spirit”!
Join me in October to find RELIEF through weekly worship, study, fellowship, and service.
After Cori Rigney preaches on October 4, World Communion Sunday (with Lewis Trotter
returning in my absence to preside over communion), I will begin a series based on the first
half of our Mission Statement: “ReNEWed by Christ’s Spirit”!
Sunday, 10/11: “ReNEWed in Spirit”: Psalm 51
Sunday, 10/18: “ReNEWed in Mind”: Romans 12
Sunday, 10/25: “ReNEWed in Strength”: Isaiah 40
Sunday, 11/1: “ReNEWed in Concern” (Part 1): Philippians 4
Sunday, 11/8: “ReNEWed in Concern” (Part 2): 2 Corinthians 8
Finding
RELIEF & ReNEWal
through God’s love and yours,

Workbook (recommended): $20.00
“The POWER of FORGIVENESS”
SUNDAYS, 10:10 a.m.: 11/15 & 11/20
Continue to probe the mysterious power of forgiveness with this two-session documentary

In response to feedback from a sermon entitled “Faith & Doubt,” Pastor Indy will present
biblical teachings on sincere faith questions raised by Palma Sola members!

10/7-14: Is Jesus unique? Does the New Testament teach that he is the only way to salvation? If so,
how? How do we as Presbyterians understand the place of other religions?

10/21-28: What is the relationship between human suffering and the goodness of God?
Between
human free-will and the sovereignty and providence of God?



11/11: How does the Bible describe human nature? Why is there so much division and hate in the

gospel music of The Wares Creek Boys.
Founded in the early 1980’s, and consisting of
four men, this local band has entertained the

share with their audiences a multitude of musical
talents, harmonizing gospel songs in a barbershop quartet style.

they perform many old familiar songs.

Mr. Harley
The story of the Pied Piper entrancing the
children of Hamelin has lasted for centuries.
Now, a new Pied Piper is making his way across
America, only he’s using his powers for good.
His name is Mr. Harley, and for the past nine
years his music and concerts have made children
of all ages very happy.
Mr. Harley leads a secret life as Harley Smith, a
mild-mannered jazz/rock drummer of the music
scene in Maine. But as Mr. Harley, he brings a
lively guitar, a pile of songs, and a fender-wide
grin to the stage, where his sheer exuberance
energizes and delights crowds of all shapes and
sizes.
A Mr. Harley audience is not a timid one. Any
inhibitions are magically wiped away, and it isn’t
long before kids (and even a few grown-ups) are
hopping like frogs, wriggling like snakes, and
roaring like tigers.
Parents, Grandparents and children of all ages are
invited to this exciting program!

Magic
of
Manatee
A Sweet Adeline Chorus
The Sweet Adeline Chorus is more than just an a
cappella ensemble. Winner of the Audience
Choice Award at the Sweet Adelines International
Regional
Competition,
these
ladies
join
together to bring exceptional entertainment to
audiences around the area.
Experience their diverse repertoire as they
harmonize familiar tunes in four-part a cappella
harmony. In addition to rich harmonies, Magic of
Manatee will wow you with their showmanship
through fun costumes and creative choreography.
An offering will be collected toward the Concert
Series. Plan to attend a reception in Fellowship
Hall afterwards hosted by Palma Sola Presbyterian.
Palma Sola Presbyterian Church thanks you!
It is only through the generosity of people who love and support music that the church is able to provide the
quality of performances which benefit both our church and the greater Bradenton community.

Property and Grounds Report
A work day is planned this fall; please plan on attending. Stay tuned; we will be sending out an email blast with the details.
Van installed a new dishwasher in the kitchen. The old one broke down and was leaking water.
New signs have been purchased and installed - east entrance door: staff, south side: delivery sign, and office room #1: Youth and Family Directors.
We worked with FPL and Verizon in eliminating sales tax on the monthly bills, a savings of approximately $50.00 per month.
Preschool has finished with its remodeling. They collaborated with the contractor to work after the school was closed each day to complete the task under
contract. The work is now complete and it looks great!

We are working with the music director to move him and his items into the original music office. The Youth Director, Family Life Director and Cory Rigney will
share office space in room #1. A desk area will also exist in the music directors’ office.

On Thursday morning 8/27/15 we experienced a major electrical surge that knocked out the electricity (for a very short time), the internet and our in-house
network router. The router was damaged beyond repair. We purchased a new router and had Verizon reboot the phone line. Interestingly, the new router works about
40% faster than the old one which was at least 14 years old!
The Icemaker got hit by lightning as well. Van replaced the cord that was damaged and all seem well with the machine. We were fortunate that more damage was not
done!





We have many projects planned for the rest of 2015 going into 2016 and we need your help! If you see anything that needs our attention, please let us
know.
Thanks and God bless our beautiful Church,

Mission Matters
It’s hard to believe that autumn has arrived already, although it is hard to notice in Florida – no change of fall leaves or
cooler weather. But how nice it is in the winter when up north they are buried in two feet of snow! Palma Sola’s fall season
got off to a great start with a successful Rally Day. We hope it inspired you to take part in one of the following
“Opportunities for Mission” available at this time of year:
STAND DOWN MANATEE COUNTY – Annual one day event to provide services for the homeless in
Manatee County, including homeless veterans and their families.
BE A PAL! - Sponsored by United Way of Manatee County. Volunteer to read to kindergarten students
one hour/week to attain reading level skills by third grade.
AGAPE FLIGHTS - Thanksgiving meal project for missionaries.
Please refer to the trifold brochures for details on the above projects and sign-up to volunteer.
It is also time to donate the following items for the Anchor House Ditty Bag Program at Port Manatee: shampoo/
conditioner, disposable razors, toothbrush and toothpaste, combs, tissue packets, fingernail clippers, soap, deodorant,
aftershave, hand lotion, white tube socks, note pads, pens and pencils. Sample sizes of the personal items are extremely
good. We did a great job collecting for this mission project last fall. There will be collection boxes in the Narthex and in
Fellowship Hall.
Thank you to those who volunteered with the Angel Tree and Adopt-A-Family registration program for the Salvation
Army in September. It’s a good example of being “Released for Christ’s Service”.
We received thank you notes from Hope Seeds, Cedarkirk and the Food Bank of Manatee County for our donations to
their organizations.
Our missionaries in Haiti, the Segaar-King family, have special prayer requests: A safe trip to Dominican Republic for
several World-Missions-Haiti staff members who will receive training in a youth ministry technique called Impact Clubs;
for Fevrier Cherubin, a key Haitian staff member who was nearly electrocuted when he plugged his laptop in, throwing him
to the ground, pulling his shoulder out of joint and fracturing his collarbone; for the CRC of Haiti as they try to restart the
ministry with the administration of the denomination, for restarting church construction projects in several areas and for
safety during the second round of elections on 10/25 as they decide the presidency and the final form of parliament. They
give thanks for: safety during Tropical Storm Erika; a good start to the school year for their children and safety during first
round of parliamentary elections.
The Nortons, along with another family, have finally moved onto the property for Project for Hope! There’s a lot to be
done. Currently they have workers putting up a security fence around the property, working on an abandoned well for
water, wiring for internet, and installing water lines and a drain for a washer/dryer. They have to walk two houses down to
use a community kitchen. And we think we have problems!! They have praises for: Finally taking possession of the
Project for Hope property; Lacy’s safe trip back to Liberty University and celebration of Molly’s 9th birthday. They have
prayer requests for: Funds for fixing property and projects for Project of Hope; extra funds for their family house and
volunteers to come help them prepare this property to be used by God in a mighty way! What faith and trust they must
have in the Lord!
Pocket Change - August: $83.98.
1st Sunday Collection - August: $146.66 to Salvation Army.
1st Sunday Collection - September: $111.00 to Stillpoint House of Prayer.
Jesus Jars - September: $139.27. A check for $682.14 was sent to F.E.L.T. which was an
accumulation for the past several months.
Palma Sola is blessed to be starting off the fall season with so many opportunities to serve the community with exciting
ministry projects. We hope one of them will appeal to you. Colossians 3:23 states, “Whatever you do, work at it with all
your heart, as working for the Lord, not for man”.
