Welcome
school until they are five. Unfortunately
though, despite guidance from the
Department of Education (Summer-
born children: school admission - 26
July 2013, updated 7th May 2014), it is
At last it’s the summer and soon, whatever
the weather, there’s time for relaxation,
and to push thoughts of school away, and
even if you’re still working, life takes on a
less hectic routine.
I’ve read recently that children who are
young for their year typically do not do
as well at GCSEs and are less likely to
go to University (I do not have figures
to support this and I’m sure there are
plenty who do very well indeed despite
their birth month).
However, if you have a summer born baby
or toddler (April - August) and you feel that
he or she might struggle compared to
their older classmates if they go to school
when they’ve only just turned 4, you now
no longer have to enrol him or her into
reported that local councils and schools
are not always as accommodating as
they could be, and you might even feel
at risk of losing a place altogether at your
chosen school if you attempt to delay
entry. In addition, your child might have to
start off in Year 1 - thus missing an entire
year of education.
If you’re caught up in this dilemma
and would like to find out more about
the subject, or get help with your own
situation, there are websites, blogs and
even a Facebook page you can look at
online. Just enter ‘summer-born children’.
This issue is just bursting with things to
do so without any more from me - start
planning and booking now! Watch out for
the special offers for Salad Days readers
in two of the advertisements!
Have a fabulous summer!

Killing that mockingbird
From September 2014, the National Curriculum starts on its journey for a
pretty radical shake-up as the government seeks to increase the standards
our children achieve against the international market where countries such as
Finland, Hong Kong and Singapore are said to be leaving us behind. When it
was first presented last year, Prime Minister David Cameron said this “revolution
in education” is vital for the country’s economic prosperity.
The world keeps changing. According to a survey of 2,000 British children
and parents conducted by Nielsen Book last year, 50% of family households
now own at least one tablet, up from 24% the previous year. We should all
welcome and embrace the benefits of new technologies which offer so
much information, enjoyment and education, but according to the survey, the
presence of these gadgets in the home is indeed impacting the way children
are reading – for fun and for information. The good news is that 32% of children
still read books for pleasure on a daily basis, but the number of “non-readers”
is significantly increasing year on year. “What we’re seeing is that non-readers
have risen from 22% to 28% of all children,” said Nielsen Book, from their survey,
salad days
comparing 2013 to 2012. It’s not just reading that is suffering from the growth
in apps and YouTube use: activities including going out, hobbies and art are
also being dropped. The standout statistic for me is that Nielsen’s data shows
that among 11-17 year-olds, non-readers grew from 13% to 27% between
2012 and 2013. Wow.
Mindful of this, I was interested to see how some of the “old favourite” books
that our children are reading for their GCSE English are under review as per the
new curriculum. Simplistically, Mr Gove has suggested that children are simply
reading too few books. It’s 28 years since I took my O-level English and the texts
studied then: ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’, ‘Lord of the Flies’, ‘1984 and ‘Of Mice and
Men’ remain just as well used today (I’ve avoided using the word “popular”).
After 4 years running a tutoring business and having worked with over 900
students, there are some very consistent patterns for what we do. Part of our
service is to go and visit the children and talk about how they’re getting on,
how we can help and getting the necessary detail so that we can assign the
right kind of tutor to the family. Yes, the schools have the books and the lesson
plans, but I’ve always been surprised, and I think a little disappointed, by the
limited range of books being read in schools. Quite staggeringly, ‘Of Mice and
Men’ is being taught in 90% of English schools.
Absolutely I can appreciate why it’s so popular: it’s considered to be
both accessible (it’s only 6 chapters long) and thought provoking in the
characterisation and as such offers a good context for students to improve their
literacy skills, but I remain hopeful that alternative texts may better enthuse
today’s 15 and 16-year olds who could very well respond more positively to
something more of the day.
So, interesting times ahead. In a time where you may consider the premise of
reading being under attack, there are likely to be some
new things going on in the classroom and I
can’t help but hope it’ll all be for the better.

Animal Magic
by Jo Burch
Words in Walden Festival Director
In the last issue of Salad Days I promised
that I would review the crop of children’s
books being published to commemorate
the centenary of the outbreak of WW1.
However, most of the books I’ve spotted
aren’t out yet so I will delay that review
until they’re all available. Meanwhile I
have some fabulous alternative reading
material for you.
Apart from Watership Down and
Animal Farm I can’t think of many
other books for adults in which the
protagonists are not human. Yet a huge
proportion of children’s books bulge with
some of the most vivid animal characters
in literature. The glory of using animals
as central figures is that they are ‘clean’ they don’t have to trail the ambivalences
and contradictions, the shades of grey,
which human characters tend to need to
be believable. With animals at the centre
of their stories, authors can focus on
specific characteristics, themes or ideas
without getting distracted - and they can
send important messages about the
human condition. All the books in this
review have animals at their centre and
their authors make brilliant use of the
opportunities this offers.
Quentin Blake has been busy again, this
time working with author John Yeoman to
produce Up With Birds, a story which
provides a delightfully dotty explanation
as to why birds and not humans took to
the air (all except
the penguin, of
course, “who had
second thoughts
and went back
indoors”). It takes
frustration,
bicycles, balloons, the ingenious Mr Fflyte
and an over-excited sparrow.
The story describes how difficult life was in
the days when birds walked everywhere.
For example, “it took Mrs Fflyte hours to
run the vacuum cleaner over the carpets,
because she had to keep switching it off
to remove small birds from the nozzle.” Mr
Fflyte, who “fancied himself as something of
an inventor” comes up with a solution but
is overtaken by events.
This is probably a book to read to young
children as some of the vocabulary is
rather advanced - but both story and
illustrations are so full of irresistibly quirky
detail that no-one will mind reading it
again and again.
If Up With Birds follows in the footsteps
of the Just So stories, David Almond’s
highly imaginative graphic novel Mouse
Bird Snake Wolf is very much in the
tradition of the Aboriginal creation myths.
The gods, having made most of the
world, get lazy and don’t finish the job.
They lounge about, nibble cake and take
long naps in the clouds. Three children
decide that there are empty niches and
do some creating of their own while the
gods doze. Without too much difficulty
they make a mouse, a bird and a snake
but when they create a wolf they discover,
just as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice does,
salad days
that “This is a job for the gods! Not for silly
children like you!”.
Mouse
Bird
Snake Wolf is
a powerful book
with strong images
from
illustrator
Dave
McKean,
probably for the
8+ age group. It is
wonderfully thought
- and imagination
- provoking. What gaps in the animal
world can you think of? What are the
implications of adding a new creature into
an existing habitat? Which animals would
you prefer not to have been created?
Equally, it could lead to an exploration of
the Aboriginal creation myths or those of
other cultures - or act as an introduction
to the interaction of gods and men in the
Roman and Greek myths (and, for older
children it could lead to reading There is
No Dog by Meg Rosoff, which is a hugely
entertaining and clever imagining of what
the world might be like if it was presided
over by a god with all the attributes and
priorities of a teenage boy...). As always,
David Almond opens the door to a huge
new world.
I want to tell you about two books which
at the time of writing aren’t yet published
but whose advance reviews intrigued me.
Chicken Clicking by smash-hit duo
Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross is about the
perils of misusing the internet (the review
describes it as Little Red Riding Hood for the
internet age). A brilliant and much-needed
object lesson giving children an early
understanding of the need to keep safe
online - at an age when they won’t just
turn round and sneer at their apparently
over-protective parents.
The other sounds just gloriously
ridiculous. The Lazy Friend by Ronan
Badel is described as “a wordless picture
book proving that a sloth can do absolutely
nothing and still cause absolute mayhem.”
It conjures the most entertaining
possibilities in my mind and will, I think,
tickle the fancies of small children
usually accused of causing chaos for the
opposite reasons.
My final choice, The Hen Who
Dreamed She Could Fly by
Sun-Mi Hwang, is utterly beautiful,

description from one reviewer who says it
is “an anthem for freedom, individuality and
motherhood, love and longing”.
This small novel (134 pages) has already
captivated millions of readers in the
author’s native Korea. Sprout the hen is
the essence of what it is to be a mother.
Every mother should read her story. No
mother will ever forget it.
powerful and deeply moving. I read it
during a train journey and sat, to the
surprise of my fellow travellers, unable to
control the flow of tears down my cheeks.
Difficult to classify, other reviewers
have likened it to Charlotte’s Web,
Jonathan Livingstone Seagull and
Animal Farm. It combines fable, naturewriting and a meditation on humanity.
The book tells the story of a battery hen
called Sprout who glimpses a different
future for herself every morning through
the barn doors where she can see other
animals roaming free. She eventually
escapes into the wild in the hope of
fulfilling her dream to hatch an egg of
her own. At face value, which is probably
how children would read it, this is a
simple, lovely, moving story. Delve more
deeply and it is an intensely personal
meditation on living courageously
and facing mortality - I can’t better the

Budgeting for the summer holidays
A little planning can only add to the fun
of having the kids around for six weeks

“Summer Is Icumen In”
Well, if you say it often enough, one day it will be true and you’ll need your sun
defenses ready. As far as sunburn is concerned prevention is definitely better
than cure.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and needs special care during the
summer. Forecasters are predicting 120 days of hot sunshine, making it the longest
summer since 1910, so be sure you have a plentiful supply of essential protection
on hand.
Forever Living Products Aloe Sunscreen and Aloe Sunscreen Spray (both SPF 30) are
suitable for both adults and children and protect skin against the sun and wind as
well as nourishing and conditioning it. Its water resistant formula keeps you safe
for up to 40 minutes and also doubles up as an after sun lotion.
For those who want to get a head start on their holiday tan or simply wish to get a
good tan “look” without risking too much exposure to the sun, the Sunless Tanning
Lotion provides a streak free tan that won’t rub off onto clothes.
Finally, don’t forget Aloe Lips to soothe and moisturize dry lips and protect them
from the burning sun.

Summer sports injuries
Summer sports injuries - how to activiate
and accelerate recovery.
Whether we are regular fitness fanatics,
newcomers to sport, or just thinking about
adding exercise to our lives, summer weather
and the prospect of an exciting season of
sporting events should undoubtedly get us
reaching for our trainers and living in lycra!
Alongside the many health benefits of regular
sport and exercise there is always a risk of
injury - and it may surprise you to know that
many top athletes and sports stars opt for
homeopathic remedies to help them, both to
prevent injury and support recovery.
James Ellington, Team GB sprinter, is among
the ten million people using homeopathy in
the UK, and swears by its use saying that,
“Homeopathy offers me a positive and natural
way to treat sporting ailments … without any
residual effects on my performance.”
Like conventional treatments, homeopathic
remedies have anti-inflammatory and
analgesic capabilities, without the risks
of “doping”. Dr J.M. Ferer, doctor to the
French World Cup winning squad, makes
homeopathic remedies his treatment of choice,
simply asserting that, “Homeopathy can
provide a preventative and curative action,...
and speeds up recovery. I can use it on the
soccer field, within seconds of the trauma,
and note the results almost immediately”.
So if it’s good enough for the likes of Olympic
athletes such as James, tennis stars such as
Boris Becker, the 2014 German World Cup
Football Squad and David Beckham, it’s good
enough for us!
Here is a basic guide to possible remedy
options for the following injuries, and enjoy
a summer packed with sport. For more

Garden carnival!
Any sunny day this summer is the perfect day
for a garden carnival, but the trouble with
planning anything like this is that the weather
is likely to have its own ideas. Plan something
for a set date and it’s as likely as not to be
rained off. So a last minute scramble when
the forecast is good is probably going to be
key. To make that possible it helps to have
thought about it all before hand – have a
plan of action and everyone primed and
ready to go as that sun comes out. Practically
that means delegating duties, getting in
supplies and knowing where things like
old sheets can be found. It is hard work, but
fun, and you will make a magical day that
you children will remember forever.
There are five areas to think about and it
really helps if you can call on other adults to
be in charge of these.
Location and decoration
First off you need a biggish garden and loads
and loads of bunting. Hopefully someone
can provide the former and the latter can
be got online pretty cheaply (something to
buy in advance). If you think it’s going to go
on into the evening bring out the fairy lights
from Christmas.
Food and drink
Asking people to bring supplies really helps
spread the load rather than one person
providing everything. It also helps if people
bring their own chairs (and tables).
Music
An extension lead and a boogie box will do,
but you’ll need someone to make sure the
music keeps going.
Games
There are lots of games you can prepare in
advance for example:
•
Frisbee noughts and crosses. This uses
a shower curtain, tape, and frisbees to
throw into position.
•
Crate tug of war. You need two crates
and a rope. One child stands on
each crate holding the rope between
them, whoever pulls the other off the
crate wins.
•
There are lots of old favourites like sack
races, egg and spoon races, hoopla,
lucky dips and bobbing for apples.
Parlours
To get the real carnival feel you need booths
and parlours. These can be made by
attaching washing lines to trees and fences
and then hanging old sheets, curtains or
blankets over them. Try a tattoo parlour, face
painting, photo booth (with a few silly hats
and wigs) and fortune telling.
So announce that it’s going to happen and
ask for help, and then wait for that elusive,
sunny weekend day….

Summer Reading Challenge
‘Mythical Maze’ and ‘ImagiNation’
Essex Libraries Summer Reading Challenge ‘Mythical Maze’ will invite children to
venture into an intricate labyrinth where they will discover a series of mythological
creatures including the Yeti; a mermaid; a dragon; the Garuda Bird; Medusa and
a unicorn.
The activity this year has been designed by Sarah McIntyre, children’s book illustrator,
known for titles such as “There’s a shark in the bath”.
Children will be encouraged to read any six books of their choice to collect stickers
and a medal. In each library children will be able to hunt for the mythological
creatures, scan them on smart phones or other devices and then watch as the
characters come to life through augmented reality. ‘Mythical Maze’ is aimed at
children aged 3-12 with a special early years version for babies and toddlers.
For those aged 11 or about to start secondary school, there will be a special activity
called ‘ImagiNation’ which has been designed by a group of young people in the
region working with a local artist and will involve reading and arts activities.

The way, the truth
and the life
In the week that I am writing this, the
prescribed reading in churches all
over the world is the famous passage
so often read at funerals, John 14:ff. It
contains the beautiful and sonorous
imagery of Jesus going to “my father’s
house to prepare a room”. It also
contains Thomas’ incredulous reply
“How can we know the way if we do
not know where we are going” and
Jesus’ reply “I am the way, the truth
and the life”.
It seems to me that this is much
misunderstood. People imagine that
for Christians the whole point of the
observance and practice of the ‘religion’
is to secure a place in heaven . Jesus, in
this passage, refuses to give away any
details about what heaven might be, he
does not answer Thomas’s question, he
just addresses his doubt.
The reason is, from my perspective, that
the destination remains shrouded in
unknowing and that Jesus calls us just
to trust him and follow him. The whole
point of the observance becomes to
serve the purposes of love in this world
and not to concern ourselves with what
the reward might be but merely to trust
in the steadfastness of Jesus’ greater
love. Of course it must be so really… if
our service in this world were to earn a
reward in the next we would have sullied
the motive behind the purpose and
turned love back into selfishness.
This also helps us to make sense of the
apparent and much abused exclusivity
of Jesus saying that only he is the way,
the truth and the life. As Christians
we are called to follow, walk his way
and practice his truth but should our
following become a cause for pride or
condemnation of others then we have by
definition fallen off the way. Our reasons
for following and our certainty in the
hope must remain grounded in humility.

and flavours, which is
best? Don’t waste your
money on expensive
drinks, I’ve had great
results with the cheapest
supermarket brands.
It’s time to get messy! Here
is one you definitely don’t
want to do in your kitchen.
Make the most of the
summer and get outdoors.
You may have already seen
or heard about the Coke and
Mentos experiment. Basically
you drop some Mentos in a
bottle of Diet Coke and stand
well back as it makes a big
fizzy mess!
First, you need to know what is going on. Fizzy
drinks are just flavoured drinks that have a
whole load of carbon dioxide gas dissolved
into them. The gas stays trapped inside for as
long as the lid is screwed on tight, when you
take the lid off it will slowly come out as small
bubbles. This is what makes the drink ‘fizzy’.
If you’re a very patient person who really likes
watching bubbles, you could sit and watch
it for a couple of days while each bubble
gradually makes its way out. I’m guessing
that you would like something a bit more
dramatic! By dropping things into the bottle,
you can get all those bubbles to form at once
and rush out of the bottle in a big fountain.
The most famous example is the Mento
but it is not the only contender for best fizzproducer. You can try out other sweets, salt,
sugar, cake sprinkles…whatever you have
in the cupboard. Try different drink brands
Two very important things
that you need to know:
(1) This is an OUTDOOR
experiment!!! It makes
a big mess so make
sure it is on the grass or
somewhere that spillage
doesn’t matter.
(2) Only use sugar-free
drinks, they simply
work better (and don’t
leave a horrid sticky
mess that will attract every ant in the world
to your garden).
You might like to make a cardboard tube
‘launcher’ so you can drop several sweets in
at once. Be warned it ‘erupts’ pretty quickly
so stand back!
As always, chldren should be supervised
and do this outdoors.

Cinema of Childhood
The King of Masks (PG)
Films about childhood take us on fantastic
voyages: ‘E.T.’ is a magical bike ride, The Jungle
Book shows us the bare necessities, and
Miyazaki’s films are animated dreamscapes.
Beyond these classics, there’s a world of great
cinema about children which is hardly known,
but just as brilliant. Welcome to that world!
A beautiful and emotional
film about a child who
wants to be loved and an
old man who learns how to
open his heart. (China)
During August we will present four of the
best films about childhood – from Iran,
China, Sweden and America – as well as
Mark Cousins’ documentary ‘A Story of
Children and Film’ which features these and
many other wonderful films. Many have
rarely, if ever, been shown in UK cinemas.
This is your once-in-a-lifetime chance to
enjoy them. Feel young again; see the world
through the eyes of a child.

Although they are not predominantly aimed
at children, all the films are suitable for
youngsters and, in the words of one critic,
“if you know the right child, this is the right
film”. An enquiring child over eight should
enjoy any of the fiction films, and this could
be a wonderful voyage of discovery for the
whole family.
We have watched all four films and they have
made us laugh and cry and have touched us
– we thoroughly recommend stepping into
the world of childhood in August.

Photographing your baby 0-1
Hi everyone! I have been photographing
babies for many years and as my
own babies get older I sometimes find
myself wishing that I had been better at
documenting the various stages of their life
more consistently! I hope the following tips
for creating special memories of your babies
are helpful. Please do stop by my website
and say hello.
floor on a rug or blanket with elbows and
hands making a comfortable and supportive
triangle underneath his chest – snap away
and capture some great expressions. If your
baby does not go on his tummy much or
doesn’t really enjoy it, place him on his back
and photograph him from above and from
the side as he kicks his legs up and grabs
hold of his feet.
Newborn
The key to recording a baby’s first few weeks
of life is to keep it natural, simple and safe.
Wrap your baby in a receiving blanket and
lay him on a rug or folded blanket on the
floor near the window where daylight is
coming in but not direct sunlight. Make sure
your camera strap is around your neck or
wrist if you are shooting down and snap
away to get some either awake or asleep
shots. Zoom in close to capture any detail
that is special to you – a wisp of hair or tiny
toes – you know what I’m talking about!
6-8 months
If your baby can now sit for a good period of
time without support, this is a wonderful time
to capture his developing personality. Socksoff are a must to get those chubby feet and
hands in shot and you might get lucky and
be able to capture hands grabbing at feet so
be ready to zoom in for a close up.
3-4 months
This is a great time to capture shots of
baby with mum or dad or a grandparent
with baby held up at the shoulder, either
peeping over the shoulder with parent’s
back turned from the camera or from the
side so both baby and parent are side on to
the camera. Convert to black and white for
a timeless classic.
5 months
If your baby is now enjoying a bit of rolling
or tummy time, warm up the room and strip
him down to his nappy then lay him on the
1 year
The one year landmark photos will become
some of your most treasured as you look
back through your family photos. Including
something to mark the occasion like a
number one balloon or a cake with one
candle in the shot can help tell the story.
Don’t forget the obligatory cake around the
face shot or sit your baby on a washable
surface on the floor in just a nappy and go
for a full on cake smash.

Summer holiday camps at
The Little Gym where the
giggles and the growing
keep on going.
Are you looking for activities for your child
during the school holidays?
School breaks should be fun, with plenty
of opportunities for youngsters to let off
steam, continue to fuel their minds and
grow their imaginations – but keeping their
momentum going and juggling home and
work responsibilities can be difficult.
That’s why camps at The Little Gym®
Bishop’s Stortford are such a delight. They
give your child the chance to stay on their
developmental toes, keep in touch with
the friends they’ve made and have heaps
of FUN!
All of our camps follow exciting themes
which add a dash of imagination to their
play. Each 3 hour session camp is £25 for
members or £30 for non-members. There
is an option to purchase a block of 6 camps
for the price of 5.
Our expert instructors fill each session with
fitness and fun. Obstacle courses challenge
them. Arts and crafts engage them. And
group activities, snack time and special
events give them time to interact and
build their social skills – all in a safe, noncompetitive, nurturing environment.
pre-school 43
Book one session, a few days, or several
sessions. You can choose half days or go
for full days where you supply a packed
lunch for your child and we supervise. You
can book your child’s camp days to fit your
schedule. But they’re very popular, so call
early to reserve your child’s spot.

MamaBliss
MamaBliss is a Pregnancy Massage
service provided by Nicola. Having
experienced two pregnancies herself,
Nicola appreciates what a physically
and emotionally challenging time this
can be and wanted to utilise her skills to
help support other women through this

She is a qualified Pregnancy Massage
Practitioner and can help you to achieve
a sense of bliss through this wonderful
therapy.
The health benefits are
amazing and include soothing tension
and tightness in muscles, improvement
of swelling in ankles and legs, increased
blood circulation and oxygen to Mother
and baby, as well as relaxing Mother
and baby which increases personal wellbeing and helps to stabilise hormone
levels, which in turn helps you to sleep
better at night.
Nicola is mobile and can visit you at
your home. Treatments cost £30 for
a 1 hour massage and £20 for 30
minutes. She can be contacted on
