NeoSoul, Funk & Blues
The Tarnations, the only NeoSoul and Blues Band out of Louisville Kentucky was
formed by some of the best and talented muscians the region has to offer. Our
mission is to entertain and wow our audience. We understand the difference
when playing a large festival versus smaller venues. With festivals and small
arenas we do our best to entertain and educate our audience by serving up a
menu of great and interesting material like no other band can. In smaller venues
we adjust our performance to fill the dance floor and their hearts and minds. They
come, they dance, they listen.......they smile! No matter what the occassion or the
venue, The Tarnations will make it a memorable event for everyone.
Tim Flowers – Guitar
It all started for Tim in the mid-70’s when one of his aunts took him to see Kiss in
concert. At that show, Ace Frehley made his guitar blow up, and fly. Tim was never the
same. From there, a friend in the school band showed him how to make a few chords and
off he went. With a style made up of every player from B.B. King and the Vaughan Bros.,
to Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, and Larry Carlton, the most important thing is the three “T’s,”
Tone, Timing, and Touch…
Tim has played guitar and sax for nearly 35 years, and has played and performed most
styles of popular music for numerous groups around the region. Favorites include, jazz,
R&B, soul, funk, older country, and of course, blues….
Wes Burgiss – Keyboards & Vocals
Influenced early on by blues artist such as Jimi Hendrix, the Allman Brothers, BB King
etc., Wes started playing keyboards in college. After college, while attending Art School
in Florida and playing in the music scene there, Wes eventually was asked to audition
for the Allman Brothers, and did... and it all went real well.... and that’s another story for
another day.
Wes has found a deep love for playing fusion, funk and jazz. After returning home he has
been in many top bands for years. He still loves to go back where it all began.... the blues.
Phil Phillips – Lead Vocals
Phil has been singing all of his life. Using every opportunity to sing he could, it started in
high school with the school choir. Before you know it he was part of the Louisville Youth
Choir, All State and the Kentucky Opera Association.
Phil earned a degree in Voice and Theatre Arts. During his college days he was in the well
known band, Counterpoint along with our drummer Rick Kays. Phil also was with the
Theatre Workshop of Louisville and the Homecoming Festival Theater Company. It’s safe
to say that Phil is very comfortable with the stage whether it’s acting or singing. Phil is a
big part of the Tarnation’s sound and loves burning up his golden microphone!
NeoSoul, Funk & Blues
Tom Walker – Bass & Vocals
Tom has been in bands since he was 14. The has logged over 5000 gigs spending many years on the road and in the
studio. He has opened for too many large name national acts to remember or name.and played in many notable groups.
Among them, co-founder & leader of The Names, Louisville’s most popular band in the 80’s. Tom was one of the founders & leader of Sharon and The Boogie Boys. He is an appreciator of all styles of music & his hobbies are gardening,
collecting books & guitars, travel & reading.
Rick Kays – Drums & Percussion
Rick has music in his blood. He is the son of local celebrity Jeanette Kays, of Walker and Kays and the Ladies for Liberty.
His grandfather was a trumpeteer for Dixie Land jazz bands in the early to mid 1900’s. Rick received his first drum set at
the tender age of five. During these formative years, he went under the tutelage of jazz great John Roy.
Rick’s early influences were The Beatles, Sergio Mendes, Herb Albert, and Black Sabbath which is why he has such a
unique style. He played in multiple bands until, at 18, he helped form Counterpoint, a group that made a huge impact in
the region. This band of brothers was made up of rock guitar, soulful singing, and a great rhythm section complete with
horns. After a short hiatus, Rick has returned to the Louisville music scene with a BANG!
