From the Pastor
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Peter Tantillo as principal
of Queen of All Saints School, effective July 1, 2012. In doing so I am
confirming the support he received from the members of both the Principal
Search Team, which conducted the initial screening of over a dozen
candidates, and the Parish School Council who interviewed the finalists and
made their recommendations to me.
I am grateful to the members of the Search Team: Cathy Carroll, chair,
Chris Martin, vice-chair, Lynn Daly, Janeen Kroll, Diane Lynch, Neal McNamara and Ron Berger
for their thoughtful and thorough scrutiny of the applicants. I am also grateful to the members of
the Parish School Board: Chris Martin, president, Tim Lynch, vice-president, Karen Proesel,
secretary, Steve Besch, Mike Cavanaugh, Linda Hermann, Jeff Kirchner, Melissa McManamy,
Patti O’Donnell, Dave Peterson and Ron Vlasic for the careful seriousness with which they carried
out their important responsibilities.
Peter Tantillo graduated from Loyola University with a Bachelor of Science in
Mathematics. He earned a Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from Loyola
University as well. In addition he is currently a candidate for Doctor of Education in
Administration and Supervision at Loyola University.
Peter began his life-long commitment to Catholic education as a high school math teacher.
He has served as principal at four Catholic elementary schools. As principal of Our Lady of the
Wayside School in Arlington Heights he earned the National Blue Ribbon School Award in 1997.
As principal of St. Alphonsus Ligouri School in Prospect Heights he earned the National Blue
Ribbon School Award in 2004. He was elected by the principals of the Archdiocese of Chicago to
be president of the Archdiocesan Principals Association for a four year term.
In the Archdiocese of Chicago, Peter served as the Associate Superintendent of Schools for
Vicariate II from 1998-2002. On the national level, Peter served at the National Catholic
Educational Association as the Regional Representative for the Great Lakes States for two terms.
In addition he served as the Vice-President of the Department of Elementary Schools Executive
Committee and as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Catholic Educational
Association.
Peter has given presentations on a wide variety of topics at many diocesan and national
educational conferences throughout his distinguished career. He is also a certified catechist in the
Archdiocese of Chicago.
Peter lives with his wife, Marilyn, in Mount Prospect. They are active parishioners at St.
Raymond Penafort Parish. They are the proud parents of twin daughters. May God bless Peter’s
ministry as principal of Queen of All Saints School.

final prayer service celebrating a year of growth in the faith. During the service the catechists

All our students in the Pre Kindergarten and Kindergarten were awarded participation
certificates. Our Tuesday classes will meet for their last class this Tuesday, May 8th at the
regular time. Dismissal will take place in the Basilica after a closing prayer service.
We are now undertaking ongoing registration for the fall classes. Anyone needing
registration forms may call the RE Office (773-286-1939) during regular office hours. If you
are a new student please bring in all sacrament records at the time of registration and medical
information with you. Transfer students will be asked to produce transcripts from their
previous parish.
We are most grateful to all our volunteers particularly our catechists who gave of their
time to share their most treasured gifts, that is their faith. We are always looking for special

Vacation Bible School News.
Registration forms for Vacation Bible Camp went home this week. If you do not receive
a registration form for Promise Island, call the office to receive one. Camp begins June 18th
and runs through June 22nd. We are always looking for caring volunteers to help with the camp

The Basilica Pavilion
or
Ombrellino
The most notable sign of a basilica, major or minor, is the “canopeum”, or
“ombrellino”, or, as it is more properly called in English, the basilican pavilion.
Only churches of basilican rank are allowed to possess and display this Papal
emblem.
It is a large, ornamental umbrella, brilliant in color, very traditional in its form
of construction. By decree, its covering is made of alternating wide stripes of
scarlet and bright yellow silk, formerly the Papal colors, and each stripe ends in
a large scallop of the reverse color. As shown in the picture, the ombrellino
opens only to a half-open shape.
The use of the pavilion dates back to very early times, when it was a mark of
distinction for royal personages and prelates to have a canopy over the throne
they occupied in public, ceremonial functions. In town squares, market places,
and even palaces a “tent-like”, elaborate covering was employed to designate
the presence and authority of an emperor or prelate. Ancient monuments and
arches commemorating historic events often depict the king or lord under the
insignia of a pavilion.
During the Middle Ages, the Popes used a pavilion in solemn processions,
especially when they traveled from one basilica to another. The canopy was
carried by the clergy as they escorted the Pontiff through the streets of
Rome.
The pavilion of Queen of All Saints Basilica, designed and constructed in
Rome, stands fourteen feet tall, when elevated on its golden staff, surmounted
by a finial of the ball and cross. It has twelve silk stripes, six feet in length,
eighteen inches at the bottom, with each
stripe terminating in a scallop of
contrasting color and decorated with
ornamental braid.
On the yellow scallop which marks the
front of the pavilion, the coat of arms of
Pope John XXIII is embroidered. On the
red scallop on the opposite side, the
historic data is also embroidered in clear
lettering: “Queen of All Saints Basilica,
Chicago, Ecumenical Year: 1962.”

Paul Welcomes All
into Life with Christ

Celebrating Paul - 3rd in a series from Little Rock Scripture Study. The study groups, lead by Deacon
Mike Monnelly, are currently studying the Letters of Paul.
Paul probably never thought of himself as being a
convert to Christianity. Paul’s own words tell us he never
swerved in his zeal to serve the God of his Jewish forbears.
“(God), who from my mother’s womb had set me apart and
called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to
me, so that I might proclaim him to the Gentiles” (Galatians
1:15-16a).
If not a conversion, his encounter with the risen
Christ on the way to Damascus was an equally profound
calling. In the years to come, conversions would come to the
many Gentiles who would respond to Paul’s preaching. Paul’s
calling led him, a Jewish rabbi, to serve God in a radically
new way, proclaiming to non-Jews what God had done for
them in Jesus Christ.
Our New Testament would be almost unrecognizable
without his influence. Human history is radically different
because he answered his call. Yet Paul was neither the first
nor the only missionary to the Gentiles. In Acts, we read it
was Peter who first preached the Gospel to a Gentile, the
Roman centurion Cornelius (Acts 10:1-49). After his baptism
in Damascus, Paul visited “Arabia” (we don’t know exactly
where that was) and Jerusalem (Galatians 1:15-18). Paul
eventually went to Antioch, where there were already a
number of Gentile converts. In Antioch the followers of Jesus
were being called by a new name: “Christian” (Acts 11:20).
Long after Paul began his missionary work, he would
write the Christians of Rome, many of whom were Gentiles,
asking them if he might visit them for the very first time
(Romans 1:13). The Christian faith had spread to many places
in the Roman Empire and had been accepted by large numbers
of Gentiles without hearing anything from Paul, “the Apostle
to the Gentiles.”
Paul’s greatness lies in far more than his being unique
as a missionary to the Gentiles. Paul’s determination to be an
apostle for the Gentiles earned his enduring influence on the
Christian faith. For Gentiles to become followers of Jesus, a
conversion was truly required. Gentiles of the Roman Empire
were, for the most part, polytheists who worshipped idols and
the large pantheon of gods in Greek and Roman mythology.
The big question for many Jewish Christians was whether
faith in Jesus was enough to really include a Gentile in their
movement. They might be baptized, but shouldn’t the men
also be circumcised? After all, Jesus was a good Jew and he
had been circumcised just as Jewish law required (Luke 2:21).
Paul’s unshakeable faith in Jesus as the risen Messiah
(the Christ) made him equally certain the God of Israel was
now calling all humanity into a covenant forged on the cross.
This new relationship with God, along with the promise of
salvation and eternal life, are made available through Christ’s
suffering, death and resurrection. Nothing in Moses’ Law
could confer this gift — it came through faith in Christ alone.
Paul was certain that any suggestion that Gentiles
needed to adopt Jewish practices in order to become followers
of Jesus ultimately meant that there was an insufficiency in
Jesus’ death and resurrection. This was unthinkable to Paul.
For Paul, once the Messiah appeared, the Law became null
and void (Galatians 3:15-27). In the book of Acts we read that
Peter and Paul and a council of the apostles and elders in
Jerusalem all came to an agreement that the Gospel could be
preached to the Gentiles. If they avoided sexual relations
outside marriage and if they refused to eat meat either offered
to idols or killed in an offensive manner, they could be
baptized and enjoy full fellowship in the Christian assembly
(Acts 15:1-31).
It might seem that the matter was settled, but
opposition by both Jewish and Gentile Christians to Paul’s
radical dismissal of Mosaic Law would only increase
throughout his life. Perhaps in order to keep his Gospel
message as unsullied as possible, Paul determined to preach
only where no one else had (Romans 15:20-21), with the one
known exception of Rome. At least three different times, to
spread the Gospel where it had never before been heard, Paul
made arduous journeys through parts of Asia (modern Turkey)
and twice on to Europe (modern Greece and Italy).
A fourth journey took him as a prisoner of faith from
Jerusalem to Rome. It was his great desire to carry the Gospel
as far as distant Spain. Did he actually reach Spain? His
message has, in fact, gone throughout the world. Wherever
Gentiles proclaim the name of Christ, they remember St. Paul.

Queen of All Saints rejoices in the incorporation of new
members into the Body of Christ. The Sacrament of Baptism
for infants is celebrated on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th Sunday of each
month at 1:30 PM. Please come into the rectory to schedule
the baptism for your child. Prior to the baptism, the parents are
invited to attend a baptismal preparation session. If an adult or
a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should
be made with one of the priests.

wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a
Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints
Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic
Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints
Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage
in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the
parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of
marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before
the date for the marriage can be confirmed.
