Café News – November 2013
Hi Everyone
I don’t know if I should be worried or not but we are about to start the
refurbishment of the bathroom. This will entail taking out of the current old
dilapidated bathroom furniture to be replaced with a brand new suite and
accompanying wall decor.
But it is not the cost I am worried about, although it is going to cost a small
fortune, it is something we have budgeted for and can readily afford. It is not even
the inconvenience of not having washing facilities or not having a place to poo.
This can be rectified with showers and baths down my mum’s house and a
portable camping toilet for when we get caught short. Alternatively I send my
family to her mum’s and I will have to make do with a trowel and loo paper, ready
for regular trips into the corner of the garden (I may also need an umbrella the
way the weather is now). It’s not even the hours spent choosing the new stuff,
trying to coordinate the colour of the floor tiles with the wall tiles and the wall
cabinets with the towels. Nor is it the hassle o returning the many samples of tiles
we have accumulated in the boot of my car and remembering which shop to return
them to.
It is not even the task of organising the various tradesmen and trying to make
sure the electrician is finished before plumber comes in. Then making sure the
plasterer comes immediately after the plumber’s first fix. And somewhere along
the line I am going to have to tile the whole thing whilst trying to find time to
write December’s newsletter.
Nope! It’s none of the above. All I am going to say is that last time I had a major
refurb in my house my beautiful baby boy Bilaal was born. GULP! Enough said!!

Dads & Lads
We decided to try having a healthy
theme one Friday evening to make a
change from selling sweets and so
squeezed fruit and vegetables and
served the juice. It was very popular
with (most!) of the children, but not so
with the adults. We had pizzas and
chips the following week to balance out
the system as most are not used to

processed. We’ll try this one evening a month hopefully and see if that works better.
Also I had these photos sent to us room the trip last month.
‘Police Academy’ day with Barton St Police Station
Thanks to Stacey Lee and the Barton St Police
Station for arranging the ‘Police Academy’ day for a
group of young people, who had a chance to spend
the day with the police team. The boys went about
in the police van and learnt/played with the CCTV
in the control room and had a tour of the Crown
Court and the peek inside the holding cells. They
then had a fascinating training session on how
forensics work and had a go themselves taking
fingerprints and footprints and after lunch at City Farm, a tour of ‘skillszone’ centre and
Police HQ.

Alongside was a team from BBC Points
West who were filming for a piece
about the Children in Need Appeal
which
will
hopefully
be
broadcast
sometime on November 13th. (Children
in Need supports projects like ours up
and down the country). So as well as
the possibility of becoming policemen,
the boys may also have got an insight
into Bolly/Lolly/Hollywood as the day
did
involve
quite
a
bit
of
‘lights/camera/action’ work in creating
the scene, (although the latter career choice is not one that we are particularly keen in
promoting). Watch out for the next one to be arranged in the New Year, (once PCSO
Stacey has recovered). The days are all part of a strategy devised between different
community groups and the Police to help young people in this area to widen their
experiences and improve their aspirations.

Older Girls Group (OGG)
Selected Saturdays - 2.00pm until 4.00pm
Ages 12 years plus
On 14th September we started back after a lengthy break with the Older
girls group with a ’Catch up & Enjoy Pizzas’ session. The girls that
attended this session were able to relax and chat with their friends
after their exams and holidays. The table tennis and pool tables
were out for them to enjoy and the girls also had an opportunity
to give their ideas and discuss what they would like to organize
for their future sessions.
We ended this session where we all
enjoyed and tucked into burgers and pizzas together.
On 21st September the Older girls group all met at Tenpin bowling
to enjoy the afternoon bowling with their friends. The girls had an
hour of fun bowling and then the other hour to catch up and chat.

Young Girls Activity Group
Selected Saturdays - 2.00pm until 4.00pm
Ages 8 – 13 years - Under 8’s MUST be accompanied by an adult
On 28th September we started back with the Younger girls group after a long break with
‘Fun & Games’.
Many games where organised for the session and we started with a
balloon game. The girls made up two teams then each team had a balloon which they
had to pass around the group (balloon under chin) without making it pop or drop - it
was loads of fun to see the girls screaming as the balloon flew everywhere besides them
trying so hard to pass to their neighbour. The next game was again in two teams where
they had to describe a picture and see if their team could draw it carefully, following
instructions on the whiteboard - again lots of fun seeing the end result to what the
original picture was.
To round off the afternoon we played our favourite pass the parcel and then ending with
a short snack time and time to cool down.
This was a very enjoyable and fun session
with the girls. Many thanks to our three older girls that helped out with this session
Zainab D, Zainab S and Farheen N, and all the volunteers who took time out to help in
this session.
On 5th October was one of the Younger
15 girls at a time. This also got booked
girl’s much-loved sessions - ‘Karting’ at

the local JDR.

youth club every Monday evening from 6pm till 8pm at Barton community centre as well
as a dance club on a Saturday from 2pm till 4pm at city works on Alfred St. We are also
