Thank you to everyone who supported the
Walking School Bus and Fun Run this week. It
was great to see so many parents and kids
walking to school and then challenging
themselves with physical wellness goals during
the Fun Run. Kudos to Mr. Goss for the ideas
and organization!
As the month comes to a close we will shift our focus from physical
wellness to Social Wellness. Watch our newsletter and website for
updates about activities that will be facilitated by our Spirit Committee
and new 5th grade committee: Character Counts Ambassadors. The
Character Counts Ambassadors will work as a committee to promote
Character Counts all year long and reinforce lessons from our socialemotional instructional program, 2nd Step. These two committees will
continue to bring to Willowbrook a culture of caring and overall social
wellness.

This week:
The structural steel arrived and was set into place
and welded.
The "rain garden," was filled with stone.
Next week:
The upper deck for the roof will arrive, be set in place and welded.
The existing roof will be cut open to extend access to the elevator
shaft and new roofing will be installed.
Building will begin on the exterior masonry columns.
The framing of exterior and interior walls will begin.
The roughing in of the HVAC and plumbing will begin.
Speech-Language Therapy News...
This year all Kindergarten and 2nd grade students at Willowbrook will
be screened to determine if speech and/or language support is
warranted. The kindergarten screenings will take place in November;
and the 2nd grade screenings will take place in October. Also, in
October, all 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students, new to District 30
this fall will be screened.All screenings will be done during the school
day and the following areas will be addressed:
Comprehension and/or use of language
Articulation
Fluency of speech
Vocal quality
If there is a need for your child's skills to be further assessed or if it
would be beneficial for him or her to receive speech and/or language
services, you will be notified by one of the speech pathologists. If your
child is one who we would like to re-screen at a later date, we will let
you know via a letter. If you have any questions about the screenings
or if you have concerns about your child's communication skills,

The Fall Book Fair is coming!
This year's theme is Reading Oasis!
A cool Place to Discover Hot Books!
A new "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" book is coming
out in November, however, we can put in orders
now! Order forms are in the office and they will
also be available during the book fair. Below are
the times the book fair will be open. Each class will visit the book fair
during the school day to look around and have a chance to write down
a few books they would like to have at home. More info to come!
Book Fair dates and times:
Tuesday, October 1
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
3:10 to 4:00 p.m. - Special Person Event! Bring your special person to
look at books and enjoy a few treats.
6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday, October 2
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
Thursday, October 3
9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Time to Sign Up for Junior Great Books for Grades 3-5
The Junior Great Books is back!
We are excited to offer your child an opportunity to
explore a short story each week for 6 weeks
beginning after Winter Break. Similar to a book
club, each group of classmates will share their
thoughts and ideas regarding a story during their
lunch period once a week.
If interested, please fill out the registration form (link) and return it to
the school office.
Please submit the registration form located on the Willowbrook
website https://district30.wufoo.com/forms/willowbrook-juniorgreat-books/ and payment by Friday, October 11th.
The fee is $20.00 if you need to order the book and $5 if you
already own it. Please make check payable to Willowbrook
PTO.
If you are interested in becoming a parent volunteer, please
send an email to Arleta Thursby ([email protected]), as
soon as possible. Please include grade level you would be
interested in leading, days when you would be available during
the lunch/recess hour and whether you have had Junior Grade
Books training. The training for a parent volunteer is a
mandatory one day commitment with dates to be announced by
the Junior Great Books Foundation. We will need one leader for
every 6-8 students.
