Welcome to Tania Pérez-Salas Compañia de Danza making
their Los Angeles debut. Tania has been heralded as the
leading voice in contemporary expression out of Mexico. While
the work is often visceral and provocative, it is also gritty and
sensual. There’s a simple surrealism which makes sense given
her influences include literature, film and visual arts. Through
significant international touring, Tania’s choreographic voice
has continued to leave an indelible and glorious impression
around the world and will undoubtedly do so among Los
Angeles audiences.

PROGRAMMING NOTE
Next month join us for a completely different dance experience in our Walt Disney
Concert Hall as we co-present Available Light with the LA Philharmonic, known as one
of America’s most seminal works created by the collective genius of Lucinda Childs,
John Adams and Frank Gehry. In July, we will conclude the season with BalletNOW, a
major venture artistically-led by Roberto Bolle and Herman Cornejo, both stars of the
beloved American Ballet Theatre. BalletNOW will celebrate some of the world’s most
acclaimed dancers from Europe and throughout Latin America with three distinct galalike programs that feature timeless classical works and inventive contemporary pieces
including many premieres and eighteen dancers from ten countries.
We’ve also announced next season which is one of reinvention, amazement and limitless
imagination. From Russia’s remarkable Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra to local favorite
Hubbard Street Dance Chicago partnering with The Second City and the hip hop infused
Compagnie Käfig from Brazil, to many more, we hope The Music Center is your home for
extraordinary dance experiences.
Whether it’s being immersed in Moves After Dark, our new site-specific series premiering
in July and featuring some of LA’s own great dance artists, or dancing under the stars on
our Plaza with our Dance Downtown series, a summer favorite for the past ten years, The
Music Center offers a spectrum of inspiring, engaging and exciting ways to be moved.

“We are so accustomed to controlling our emotions that we,
often times, reject what we feel. The mind can deny what the
body desires, and even what it needs, such as sex or sleep.
Modern life and current systems have trained us to work at
all costs. We have moved away from our raw nature and
have forgotten to trust our instincts, which cause us to lose
the communication between our mind and our body. In this
work, I attempt to listen from an alternative perspective, one
that is more connected to my own nature. I try to regain
the satisfaction and pleasure of some of my basic needs,
like sleeping and thus dreaming, and being attentive to the
messages my body has for my mind.”

“In this new work, I use my perspective as a Mexican
female artist to create images that illustrate male and
female gender roles in contemporary Mexican society
as perceived through the culture’s strong emphasis on
masculinity, a concept known as ‘machismo’.”

CDA Dance Salon
featuring Bonnie Homsey and Debra Levine
CDA member Susan Baumgarten, Bonnie Homsey
and CDA board member and host, Sue Tsao
CDA board member, Sue Tsao generously hosted an intimate Dance Salon with Bonnie
Homsey, former principal dancer with The Martha Graham Dance Company and Debra
Levine, acclaimed Los Angeles dance writer. Homsey reflected on her time as a Graham
dancer and Levine shared Graham’s early days in LA, and Graham's revolutionary
vision which spawned a new era in modern dance. Members enjoyed a conversation
about Graham’s legacy and lasting influence, participated in a demonstration of the
Graham technique, and were treated to visual accompaniments including
costumes and photographs by American photographer, Barbara Morgan.
