President’s Message
Newsletter Issue 1, 2014
By the time you receive this
newsletter we will be well
into our spring activities. I
wanted to update all of you
on the issues your OA board
have been involved in since
our annual meeting in Austin.
There are a number of critical
areas we have been concerned with, as I know
have also been a great concern to all of our owners.
We continue to be actively involved in ongoing
discussions regarding the branding issue with KOA.
While they have made a number of changes to their
original criteria, there are still a number of questions
ongoing with the branding issues. This was a major
point of discussion with Inc. at our winter board
meeting. It has also been considerable discussion
among our board during the two teleconferences we
have had since the start of the year. The key areas
being the marketing plan for the distinctive brands,
the continued marketing and representation for
non-branded franchises, and OA representation on
the brand segment development groups to ensure
continued input.
There are several other areas we feel are major
priorities that Inc. should be working on, and I
would like to mention them to you. The first is on
the redesign of Kampsight. I have impressed upon
Inc., with the complete support of your OA board
the importance of fixing this problem quickly and
correctly. Many on our board members, as many
of you, are concerned that this redesign be done
quickly. In addition, we would like to see a number
of additional services that can be made available
to Kampsight which require a major reworking of
the program. KOA is mid stream in developing a
strategic plan for the next generation of Kampsight. I
can tell you that the OA board and the new Franchise
2
Advisory Committee both stressed to KOA the
importance of this project and that the redevelopment of
a Kampsight Committee is needed item for future input
from the users perspective.
The OA would also like to see a continued expansion
of international marketing, which we feel will result in
gaining many new campers that we may not currently
be reaching, especially in the Deluxe Cabin arena. KOA
will be attending both POW WOW and Rendezvous
Canada this spring , which deals with the International
Travel Market and Resellers etc. The OA will be
following up on this platform as the season progresses.
We also made note of the fact that the Marketing and
Operations Partners have been combined into one
committee. I personally attended the first FAC meeting
in Billings and was pleased by the groups participation
and involvement. The new FAC came up with some
great ideas and suggestions to improve this format, and
as the OA has two dedicated seats at the table, we will
continue to monitor this format to see its effectiveness
as things progress.
Some of the other areas the OA is continually working
on are:
1. VKR sales and the you- the OA is working with
KOA to improve the campgrounds potential for
renewal sales and new sales through program(s)
review and discussion. I am very pleased with
KOAs initiatives in this area so far, more to come
2. Credit Card Processing - as you know KOA
has conducted an audit and is reevaluating the
rates you are charged for credit card processing.
Unfortunately in this area , the Canadian KOA’s
are not able to be included, so the OA is closely
monitoring the issue as well.

Marketing Efforts
An inventory of the Illinois trifold brochures indicates that we are close to the end and will need to print more. It
was decided to stay with the trifold as the space is needed to list all parks. As the RV shows start in January it was
decided to have the new trifold available at the fall meeting. Joe and Thomas agreed to rework the design to add
some color and new pictures once proofs are ready all parks will have the opportunity to correct any information on
their park. All cost will be shared equally and all parks concurred.
Illinois Owners Web Page was discussed and the page was pulled up on screen for review. One question asked was
how much traffic went through that page. Thomas did not have an answer but said he would try to find out and report
back in the fall.
Constant contacts discussion and demonstration by Thomas will be put off until fall meeting.
KOA camping shows.
Reviewed show results and discussion of future shows. Rosemont, Quad Cities and Peoria all seemed to have
attendance increases. Request of actual numbers produced rather dubious numbers but it was clear the numbers
are up. John noted that Peoria did not distribute a contract at the end of the show and there is speculation that the
Peoria and Springfield shows may not be around next year. As the Springfield show is this weekend March 28-30,
Springfield, Casey and Benton will advise in the fall as to the results and our need to continue the show.
There was discussion of two new shows, Belville and Rockford, and whether we should consider doing those
shows. It was decided to wait until this fall to evaluate adding one or both shows and dropping any show. Thomas
& Sylvia did participate in the Rockford show at their expense this year and thought the show was productive and
growing. Walt and Stan will check into the Belville show and report back in the fall.
OA report from Joe
Joe gave us an OA report as he is our area rep on the board. Joe said that KOA has informed the OA that kampsight
will not see any major changes soon. The big problem is cost but KOA will need to do something before long
because they are running out of programmers for their antiquated system. More promises missed (so much for Good
to Great at KOA, Inc.). OA also asked KOA to be more diligent in making new and existing parks adhere to the
system standards. Joe said he thinks the real issue is that KOA does not want to reduce numbers and thus reduce
revenues. Joe also stated the new gift card program is delayed and pointed a finger at Kampsight for the delay (fancy
that, Kampsight is the bottle neck).

Owners News
Presentation by BDC Steve Albrecht
Steve Albrecht gave the group news of what is new at KOA. He stated the new VKR rates will go into effect on May
4th with an increase to $27. KOA has agreed to give $1 of the increase to Care Camps and is hoping that owners
will also consent to giving $1 of the increase to Care Camps. He said current system stats show that reservations,
registrations, camper nights and dollars are all up at this time for 2014. Right now all indicators point to a good
year with potential growth of 2 to 4%. Steve said 126 parks are now branded or in the process. He reported that
no major upgrades are planned for Kampsight. He said we will be switching to a new credit card provider and that
the change should have been done by now but has been delayed after KOA Inc. found out that their new provider,
Bank of America does not provide services in Canada. Wow talk to a vendor without making sure they can provide
the complete product, way to go. Gift cards are also delayed and there does not appear to be an expected go date.
Steve next provided a presentation on “Cabins Dollars and Cents” This presentation took about 2.5 hours. Steve
addressed the growth in cabin revenues verses camping cabins, RV and tent sites. Steve brought up a spread sheet
tool available on ekamp that allows the owner to input financial information to determine need and pay back
of investing in additional deluxe cabins. The group took time to work through a hypothetical example change
parameters to see what the various out comes might be. A significant amount of time was spent discussing linens
and should parks provide linens as part of the standard service of renting a cabin. Some owners were concerned we
are becoming hotel businesses and moving away from our traditional core business of serving the camping public.
Steve pointed out that at this time we are addressing the need of those that wish to camp and recreate in a nontraditional way and that linens would open the opportunity for owners to attract ever more of the non-traditional
camping public. Much of the discussion on linens focused on the cost of providing the service, infrastructure or
non-availability of service providers to provide linens. It was clear that most of the owners were not excited about
moving to linens as a standard service.
The presentation was well received and Steve was thanked for attending the meeting.
Lunch
Park Tour of Rock Island KOA was not conducted because of our ever lingering winter. The morning of the
meeting Rock Island received an inch of snow, the wind was blowing at 15-20 MPH and temperatures were in the
20s. With time limited and poor weather conditions the tour was dropped.
Thanks for attending and participating.
Adjourn 3:00pm
January/Februay/March 2014
Bed bugs were next discussed by the group with Dave leading the discussion. He reported on the bug heater that
was purchased with group funds last fall. Because of the winter he was not able to run the heater until this spring
and was in the process of running the heater in the infested cabin. He said the heater was maintaining a temperature
of 150 in the cabin and he planned to allow it to run for several days. He would than test for the presents of bugs
in the cabin and re-treat if needed. He would next proceed to treat as a preventative measure his remaining cabins.
Dave explained that the use of the heater was very simple and that he did need to acquire electrical cords to make
all connections. Once he has the total cost the group will reimburse for the cost, the cords will travel with the heater.
It was decided that the heater would next go to Chicago, Lena, Rock Island and Kankakee. At the fall meeting if
not before the heater would move to the southern parks. This schedule is subject to change should any park have
a need to treat an infestation. It was also noted that the heater not only kills bed bugs but bugs of all sorts without
the risk of pesticides.

Africa 2014 | Rain Harvest Project
by Mike Kuper
Pictured here are Amy, Tony and daughter Hailey Raposo (Barrie KOA) Cathy and Jeff Stovold (Toronto North
KOA) Kristie and Michael Kuper (Thunder Bay KOA) along with 17 others. Together they went on a mission
to MCF in Kenya Africa. The main purpose for this trip was to help catch rain water from the
they put the word out to form a mission group to go to MCF in Kenya to help with the manufacture, teaching
and installing of the gutters. The ladies came along with their talents, some singing and dancing with the children,
and others teaching in the classrooms! Together they helped sort out donations that we had brought over. They
also did some mending and worked miracles, adding ribbons & bows to clothing that the children wear to church.
The team also funded 2 dinners for the children. The first at MCF approximately 500 children at Ndalani and
the second about 500 children at the Yatta location. Not only funded but together with the children we helped
prepare it! We peeled about 200 lbs of potatoes and spent the day making chapoti which is (flour, salt, water)
somewhat like a pancake, cooked over small coal burners. We also served beef (meat is not often served), rice and
juice. What an experience! The joy to serve the special dinner, and also to share in the meal, it was delicious!!!
We were all truly blessed to be included in the Rain Harvest Project!

roofs of their buildings by installing gutters. Not only the team working together finishing the buildings but more
importantly teaching the Kenyans how to make and install the gutters. We managed to complete 14 buildings
of the 40 or so that they already have. The team left confidently knowing that the they will be able to finish the
job. With the gutter equipment & the knowledge, the MCF men they taught will be able to continue projects
in the villages and bring in income. Charles Mully (Founder of MCF) works at making MCF self sustaining,
this project is an example and will continue to help MCF thrive. It all began a couple of years ago when a few
of us went over as ambassadors. Our group leaders Vicki and John Buchner own a manufacturing plant that
produces aluminum products such as soffit, fascia, gutter material. John had a vision and saw the need. Charles
Mully and John spoke and were excited at the prospect that together we could help catch the rain water off their
buildings! Water is a very precious commodity in Africa. Since that meeting the Buchner’s acquired, through
their own business, and along with their suppliers a gutter machine, tools and enough material to install at least
a mile of gutter. Early into 2013

Tidbits
As I sit here waiting for the thermometer finally to hit double digits and dreaming of the day
when the polar ice cap recedes from Pennsylvania a few rambling thoughts worth sharing
came to me.
I remembered Windows XP support will end in April of this year. No support-No security. I
went to the Microsoft website and downloaded the Windows Upgrade assistant. It checked
my computers to see if they were compatible with an upgrade to Windows 7 or 8. They were
not. I ordered new computers. I went with Windows 7 and found all of my documents and
programs seamlessly transferred and work just fine.
I came across an article in the digital edition of Pest Control Technology (www.pctonline.com) magazine on bed
bug treatments. There are some fairly new insecticides out there. Transport, Tandem and Temprid are dual mode
products designed to help reduce issues with treating insecticide (pyrethroids) resistant critters. Another product
is Phantom. Phantom is in a class all by itself and does not repel critters like pyrethoids may. Here’s my disclaimer:
Read and follow the label.
This brings me another tidbit. I’m an information junkie. Always browsing for new information, from trusted sources,
that I can take back to the business. The HotelResources.com site has several free newsletters you can subscribe
to including the Daily Hotel Industry News and Hospitality Trends. The Hotel Law Blog is another site that can be
subscribed to. I subscribe to the American Hotel and Lodging Association’s (AHLA) Lodging Magazine. There is a
print version and a weekly email. Next is the Convenience Store news. This covers food trends, consumer trends,
hardware, software and more. Another source is through Stagnito Media (http://www.stagnitomedia.com/). Here
you can find the Convenience Store News and it’s related print/digital editions.
Okay, maybe I have too much time on my hands. I do believe that in every one of these, and others I read, I have gained
insight and useful information for myself and my business. After 20 years in the industry it is clear camping as we
know it is in constant change. 20 years ago I don’t remember 50 amp rigs or slide outs (tip outs on park models, yes).
Looking for campground specific site, check out rvdailyreport.com and www.woodallscm.com. They are industry
related new aggregators with continuous updated daily. www.rv-pro.com/news is another source for up to date
industry related news.
After 20 years of trying various ways of communicating around the campground we broke down and put in an FCC
licensed radio system. Our problem is the campground covers 50 acres over a hill. It is narrow and deep. The office
sits at the top of the hill, in the middle of the property. The front fishing pond sits 50 feet lower than the office. The
wastewater plant sits out back and is 100 feet below the office and through the woods. There were always dead
spots no matter what radios we used. I filled out the FCC paperwork. It wasn’t as bad as I thought. There is a lot of
helpful information out there and various FCC calculators for some of the technical questions. The paperwork was
submitted to a third party who assigns a frequency. Then the paperwork goes off to the FCC. I went from vhf, which
works well in open ground, to uhf which has greater building penetration. I also added a repeater at the office.
Now we full communication throughout the campground. No dead spots. I chose ICOM portable radios. They were
cheaper than previous non-licensed radios. The ICOM I selected have a speaker output of 800 mw. That’s roughly
60% louder than standard radio outputs. Since we use a lot of workampers, and many of them are older, getting
radios that they may hear better was a plus. There are a lot of options. For repeaters, you can get a full power
repeater of 45 watts or more. There are also lower power, less expensive options. Ritron makes 2-5 watt repeaters
for smaller areas. Just getting an FCC licensed system allows you to use 5 watt radios instead of 2 watt non-licensed
radios. No repeaters needed. There are so many options and the prices have dropped over the years that if you need
to improve your communications there’s something out there to help.
As the population widens we have started using 2 x 12 boards for the seats on our picnic tables. Nuff said.
January/Februay/March 2014
As the glacier recede I have begun to see the aftermath of winter. The number of limbs and trees laying on the
ground is staggering. As you do the same, don’t forget to look up. I see nearly as many broken limbs and tree tops
hung up in the trees. Widowmakers they’re called. They can drop at any time.
Respectfully, Karl Schmidt

or business-to-business marketers, the sales cycle has grown
increasingly complex in the last decade. No longer is it possible
to simply invest in predictable marketing channels, such as direct mail,
trade shows, and trade magazines, and then count on receiving calls
from prospects.
Today, prospects spend a considerable amount of their time online:
Americans are now spending nearly 20 hours each week on the Internet,
across more than 644 million websites.1 They are heavily influenced by
sources including online reviews, personal recommendations, and social
content. They are also influenced by display and search advertising
campaigns that appear on the sites they visit. This gives them access to
more information about potential business solutions than ever before.
Accordingly, such prospects are spending more time conducting
independent research and carefully evaluating information internally
before reaching out to a solutions provider. According to a BtoB Magazine/
Bizo survey, 43% of respondents said their organizations’ sales cycles had
lengthened within the past three years.2 Forrester Research notes that
today prospects are
thirds to 90% of the way
through their buying
journey before contacting
a vendor.3 Essentially, the
marketing funnel is now
controlled by the buyer.
According to Forrester Research, a B2B buyer’s journey is often
ninety percent over before sales is contacted.

Because prospects aren’t likely to reach out to your organization
immediately, it’s important to use a full-funnel marketing approach to
reach out to target prospects through multiple digital marketing touch
points, both early in the buying process and at every stage thereafter.
Your competitors are already making such efforts to engage prospects
and capture leads early in the process—and if you haven’t developed
your own strategy, your target prospects are unlikely to reach out to your
organization. Marketers can no longer take a passive approach, assuming
that prospects will respond to their outreach programs; they must now
develop a comprehensive approach to reaching prospects and engaging
them throughout the entire marketing funnel in order to complete
a conversion.
What are the levels of the
marketing funnel?
T
he concept of the “marketing funnel” provides a helpful framework
for B2B marketers to understand each stage of a prospect’s decision-
making progress and to guide them in developing marketing programs
that are appropriate for every stage. In today’s age of advanced marketing
technologies and rapidly evolving best practices and strategies, marketers
are in a strong position to cost-effectively reach their target audiences at
every stage of the funnel.
At the top of the funnel, marketers should focus on building awareness
and recall of their company and products among prospects who are
currently unfamiliar with their brand. The goal is to convey what your
company does, why your products are unique, and why prospects should
care about your company.
In the mid-funnel, your goal is to educate and influence prospects after they
are aware of your brand, but before they are necessarily ready to engage
with a sales representative or share their contact information. Your mission
is to give them the tools and resources to educate themselves about your
solution and how it can assist them, using specific calls-to-action that will
help them find the most relevant information.
26
Owners News
At the bottom of the funnel, your goal is to convert prospects into leads
and paying customers, enlisting them to sign up for newsletters or product
trials or to purchase your solution. By building awareness and nurturing your
prospects earlier in the buying process, at this point, you are likely to have a
group of highly targeted prospects ready to convert—but they may need a
few more reminders to nudge them into action.

Targeting the full funnel
n planning a comprehensive marketing strategy, marketers must employ
a diverse set of programs that impact the entire funnel. Full-funnel
marketing is focused on understanding the key objectives you need to hit
at each stage of the funnel, pinning down the right metrics to measure
progress against those objectives, and then deploying the most effective
programs to achieve them.
Marketers who employ a diverse set of strategies to reach prospects
across the entire funnel are likely to achieve the greatest success. And, it’s
important to understand the specific roles various programs and channels
can play in achieving that end goal. For example, online display advertising
should not be considered as a “top-funnel only” strategy; it has proven
remarkably effective when used in comprehensive programs that reach
every stage of the marketing funnel. In a recent comScore study, researchers
found that prospects who viewed search marketing ads for a company were
82% more likely to buy the product in question than if they received no
exposure. However, when the search ads were paired with display ads, the

researchers saw a 119% lift in sales 4 for this mid-funnel marketing strategy.

Campfire
Banana Splits
Ingredients:
6 large bananas, unpeeled, stems removed
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 package miniature marshmallows
Directions:
Preheat the grill for high heat.
Spray 4 sheets of aluminum foil, large enough to wrap
bananas, with cooking spray.
Slice the peel of the banana from stem to bottom, while
slicing the banana inside lengthwise. The bananas can
be cut into slices instead if you like, (while still in the
peel) for easier handling later.
Carefully open the banana just wide enough to place
the chocolate chips and marshmallows inside the peel
with the banana. Stuff with as much of the chocolate
chips and marshmallows as desired.
Wrap the bananas with the aluminum foil and place
on the grill or directly in the coals of a fire. Leave in
long enough to melt the chips and the marshmallows,
about 5 minutes. Unwrap bananas, open the peels
wide, and eat with a spoon.

Foil Packs
Ingredients:
Original recipe makes 4 packets
1 lb. skinless boneless chicken breast meat cubed
2 onions, diced
1 (8 ounce) package sliced fresh mushrooms
1 yellow bell pepper, seeded and sliced into strips
1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced into strips
4 cloves garlic, sliced
4 small potatoes, cubed
1/4 cup olive oil
1 lemon, juiced
Directions:
In a large bowl, or a large zip-top bag, combine the
chicken, onion, mushrooms, yellow pepper, red pepper,
garlic, and potatoes. Pour in the olive oil and lemon juice,
then mix well.
Evenly divide the mixture between 4 large sheets of
aluminum foil. Top each with another sheet of foil, and roll
up the edges tightly. Wrap each packet again, securely in
another sheet of foil to double wrap.
Cook in the hot coals of a campfire until the chicken is
opaque and the potatoes are tender, around 40 minutes.
