Lake County Paves the way for 20Court Sand Volleyball Complex
Opportunities to do Business with
Lake County Government
TAVARES – The Lake County Board of County
Commissioners approved an agreement on April 8 that would
allow The Florida Region of USA Volleyball to begin construction
on the Hickory Point Beach sand volleyball complex, set to open
the weekend of July 4.
The 20 sand volleyball courts will be built at the Hickory
Point Recreational Facility, located on the shores of Lake Harris
in Tavares, and will boast professional level net systems, lights,
permanent restrooms, an intercom system, web cams and 24
inches of top-grade sand.
“The Hickory Point Beach sand volleyball complex is
precisely the type of venue needed to improve Lake County’s
sports infrastructure and will have a significant positive impact on
the Lake County economy,” said Robert Chandler, Lake County
Economic Development & Tourism director.
The Lake County Board of County Commissioners
approved the $398,000 plan, which will be paid for in full by the
tourist development tax.
“A public/private partnership with Lake County is
pioneering in the sport of volleyball and will create a model for
other municipalities to follow across the US,” said Steve Bishop,
executive director for the Florida Region of USA Volleyball. “We
applaud the leadership of Lake County for sharing our vision and
we look forward to working closely with them to make Lake
County the home of beach volleyball in Florida.”
The construction of the new venue was made possible
through a partnership between the county, Florida Region of
USA Volleyball, Lake County Water Authority and the Lake
County Education Foundation, which is relocating their annual
Renaissance Faire from Hickory Point to a new venue. The plans
are pending a final vote by the Lake County Water Authority on a
lease agreement with the county.
The Florida Region of USA Volleyball is a 501c3 nonprofit that began operating in the 1960s to promote volleyball and
to create competitive playing opportunities for volleyball
enthusiasts of all ages throughout the state. The Florida Region
is one of 40 regional volleyball associations under the umbrella
of USA Volleyball and currently serves over 12,500 members.
For more information on the Florida Region, visit
www.FloridaVolleyball.org.
TAVARES – The Lake County Board of County
Commissioners (BCC) is always looking to spend taxpayers’
money wisely. One way this can be achieved is through the
competitive bidding process when it comes to purchasing goods
and services from vendors.
“Becoming a registered vendor is the best way a local
business can become aware of BCC bidding opportunities,” said
Barnett Schwartzman, Lake County Procurement manager.
By offering convenient and free online registration for
businesses owners interested in working with the county, the
county hopes to increase its base of competitive vendors willing
and able to provide a range of services.
Upon registration, businesses will automatically receive
an email notice when the county issues a formal solicitation for a
good or service that matches the commodity codes selected.
Potential vendors will then be directed to a website where they
can review and download a copy of the solicitation.
Lake County’s online vendor registration saves
business owners time spent constantly checking on the county’s
purchasing needs. Registration also helps ensure that as many
vendors as possible are given the opportunity to bid on projects.
To register as a potential vendor with the Lake County
BCC:
•
Log on to www.lakecountyfl.gov/procurement.
•
Click on “Register as a Vendor” in the left navigation panel
to be taken to the Vendor Registration Form.
•
Vendors should select all commodity codes that apply.
Businesses will only receive notices for solicitations that
match the specific codes selected. A vendor does not have to
register to participate in the county’s purchasing program. The
public may still view and download all the information included
on
the
county’s
procurement
website
at
www.lakecountyfl.gov/procurement.

TAVARES – The Florida Department of Health (DOH)
in Lake County, in a partnership with the Lake County Board of
County Commissioners (BCC), was part of a group of statewide
employees credited with saving government a total of $558
million.
Florida Lieutenant Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera
joined Florida TaxWatch in announcing the 2014 Prudential
Productivity Award winners at the Florida Capitol last week,
which included employees of the DOH in Lake County and the
BCC.
One program that received recognition is Lake’s online
septic system permitting initiative, the only of its kind in the state.
The County’s Growth Management Department webpage at
www.lakecountyfl.gov/departments/growth_management/building_services
was created to help streamline the permitting process by
assigning a Lake County planner to help residents file their
permits with the state. Thanks to this program, customers no
longer have to apply for a zoning or building permit with the
county and then file additional applications with the DOH.
“Allowing the permitting process to transition online in
its entirety for our residents and businesses was a crucial step in
our economic development efforts,” said Commissioner Sean
Parks. “The staff from the BCC and the Health Department
worked hand-in-hand to make the online permitting process work
smoothly, and we have received several calls from other
counties around the state inquiring as to how we made it work
between the two agencies.”
The Lake County honorees were Amye King, Elias
Christ, Diane Fox, Mike Cates, Anita Greiner, Erikk Ross,
Carmen Carroll and Skip Nemecek for their work on the septic
system and online permitting initiative.
The 26th annual awards honored 432 people and
teams of state employees for creating and implementing
innovative solutions and productivity improvements in cost
savings, cost avoidances, and increased revenue for state
government. Of the 432 award winners, 195 will receive cash or
plaques during the regional awards ceremonies this summer.
“Congratulations to a great group of county and state
government professionals working together,” said Paul D. Butler
Jr., Senior Public Health Service Manager for the DOH in Lake
County.
