BJP: BJP’s overconfidence and ‘India shining’ campaign was
its undoing in 2004. It again lost the plot in 2009 although it
had a cleaner image. Now it is hoping to be third time lucky.
Advani almost spoilt the party aided and abetted by Nitish
Kumar. Modi’s nomination has proved to be a right step. He
has drawn massive crowds to his rallies across the country with
his credible theme of development. Despite its poor presence in
Tamil Nadu and Kerala,
BJP was banking on a sweeping victory in North India. Their win
in recent state elections would have boosted their confidence
had it not been for the sudden rise of AAP in Delhi. If BJP now
wants to make it, it must mimic the ASAP’s stance in regard to the
corruption and criminal elements. It must assure the electorate
it will shun such elements and select competent candidates with
impeccable integrity for the Lok Sabha election. This is a tall
order. Voters will be convinced only if it also walks that talk.
Relying on dubious candidates on the excuse of their ‘winnability’
will ruin its prospects. It must concede that AAP has redefined
AAP: The sudden entry of AAP in the national scene has taken
all the political parties by surprise. AAP’s original plan was only
to make other political parties behave and eliminate corrupt
and criminal politics. By its Delhi triumph it has already largely
achieved this objective. Congress and BJP are beginning
to respond. But success seems to be going to AAP’s head.
Already it is taking a few false steps. Instead of consolidating its
gains by delivering clean governance in Delhi and becoming a
role model for other state Governments, it has suddenly become
power crazy and wants to capture the Lok Sabha and other
states going to poll shortly. It has embarked on a hectic member
acquisition drive nationally, as if there is no tomorrow. This will
bring in a lot of opportunistic individuals and pollute the party.
It will also split the votes of well-intentioned voters and bring
political instability. AAP’s aim should be to put up credible
candidates only against corrupt and criminal candidates of other
parties and encourage honest candidates irrespective of party
affiliations. That way it will transform itself as the collective
conscience of the electorate. This will automatically enhance
its standing as an agent of change. This is what it must do if it
has the national interest in mind. The country needs a decisive
strong government sensitive to the national needs.
That in short sums up the present political
situation 4 months before the Lok Sabha
elections. Let us see

Congress: UPA I and UPA II led by Congress have been mired
in big ticket corruption and loot. It is payback time now. As the
leading member of the coalition Congress will have to bear the
consequences. It is unlikely that it will win more than 50 seats. It
cannot dream of cobble up and heading a ruling coalition once
again. UPA III is a non-starter. At best Congress will be a small
player giving inside or outside support to the Government. At
worst it will sit in the opposition. It should be happy if some of
its leading lights do not go to prison for corruption. Dynastic
politics is now passé. Unfortunately Congress is fixated on the
idea Rahul Gandhi becoming the PM.
It does have other competent leaders, but they have developed
weak knees due to decades of kneeling and cannot even
stand up. They are also burdened with acts of omission and
commission committed by them for their own benefit and at the
bidding of the High Command. The best of them are wanting
in terms of intellectual integrity, even if they have been clean
financially. The safest strategy for the party would be to admit
their mistakes and make a solemn promise that they would not
repeat them. If they make an honest admission, the party will
have a chance to make it when elections are held again after a
few years. An innings in opposition will do it a world of good.

The ensuing elections to the Lok Sabha, one of the
following parties will dominate or make the real
difference. Together they have marginalised other
parties. In the alphabetical order they are AAP, BJP and
Congress. All the three should plan their strategies realistically.
Let us analyse their respective situations in the reverse
alphabetical order.

which is much more than
enough for Ajith fans to watch the
movie atleast twice on the first

but other songs in the movie
were pretty average. Hopefully,
Ajith’s screen presence in other
songs adds value to the music.
Currently, there are only 2

than this in Tamil Cinema. It
is as bigger as India vs Pakistan competing against each other in World Cup Match.
But, the good thing here is, both can win the battle. After several years, Vijay & Ajith
movies releases on the same day. Both actor fans want their hero movie to not only
succeed at the box office, but also get more collections than the competitor. Fans of the
actors will watch the movie without any doubt, but the common audience will be quite
selective and may prefer the movie, which has good word of mouth. If both the movies
had been released separately (solo release), it would have got much more collections
without any doubt. Adding to it, Maheshbabu’s One & Ramcharan’s Yevadu too will

make the clash even bigger in overseas market. It is a big festive season with almost
10 days vacation. Nowadays, if the movie runs for 10 days, it will gain atleast twice the
budget (based on number of shows). Hence, both the producers want their movie to
be released on the same day and didn’t bother about the clash between the titans.
Ajith is acting in rural based movie after long time. Indeed, leading heroes of Tamil
Cinema have not recently acted in Rural based movies. Ajith has recently acted only
in movies with Anti–Hero subjects. Brother Sentiment Commercial Action movies
are very common in Tamil Cinema in 90’S. But, Ajith is doing this kind of role for the
first time and hence, it has created good expectation among his fans. This is second
movie for director Siruthai Siva. His first movie was a Telugu Remake - Siruthai.
Second Movie for any director / actor is the most important one and he is very
lucky to have Ajith playing the lead role in his second movie. Let us see whether he
manages to give a movie which will satisfy Ajith Fans & Common Man in this review.
Story: First Half – How love blossoms between Ajith and Tamanna?
Second Half – How Ajith safeguards Tamanna’s family?
Ajith – Ajith's intro was simple, but will be loved by his fans. Intro Song was better
than Arrambam as it was well choreographed. Recent Ajith movies didn't give
him much opportunity to perform in various scenes & were one dimensional.
In this movie, Ajith gets Mass Scenes, utter best Punch dialogues & most
importantly, perform in romance & sentiment oriented scenes after long time. Ajith

Tamanna – She makes a comeback to Tamil Cinema after Venghai, which got
released in 2011. Usually, in big heroes movies, Heroine will be used as Glamour
doll, dancing for 2 duet songs and have 3- 4 scenes going behind the hero.
The whole movie revolves around her character and she completely fits the role
Santhanam – The only person who can tease Ajith and can receive applause from Ajith
fans. He has more screen presence in the first half, with his best comedy timing dialogues.

Director Siruthai Siva has given yet another Commercial Sentiment Action Movie to Tamil
Cinema, but manages to make it a hit by mixing the right ingredients - Comedy, Romance,
Sentiment, Action, Mass Scenes and Punch Dialogues. He will be called as ‘Veeram’ Siva
from now on. There is lit bit of Telugu f lavour in the movie without any doubt.

Arnab!
For long I have been following TV debates at night.
My favourite has been the 9 PM debates on Times
Now. Arnab Goswami and his team of dedicated
investigators unearthed and exposed the CWG scam
and became popular. The channel’s investigative work
made it a trendsetter in no holds barred visual journalism.
The sensational coverage drew the ire of Parliament and
PM was forced to appoint the Shunglu Committee, which
indicted Sheila Dixit, the Delhi CM and others. (It is another
matter that the Channel did not follow it up.) Arnab did
not look back and his news hour programme became a
hit. Other channels followed suit, but seemed to lack the
incisive skill of Times Now.
F
Gradually however News hour degenerated to a logjam
between the Congress and the BJP. Whenever Congress
was cornered for its corruption, instead of owning up its
culpability, it tried to wriggle out by pointing out some
irregularities in the earlier NDA regime. Arnab also
actively encouraged this and the debates became a puerile
exercise. As they say in Hindi, it was only ‘tu-tu-main main’
or finger pointing ad-nauseum. There was no takeaway
except heightened bitterness.
The audience interest dipped. Then one fine evening it
dawned on Arnab that he had to end this stalemate. He
decided to assume a more aggressive role for himself.
A neutral watcher began to feel that Arnab was becoming
increasingly irritable and intolerant, more interested in
listening to his own voice than those of his guests. Of
course he would never countenance a counter question
or challenge from any participants. If anybody questioned
his motive or ethics he showed hypersensitivity instead
of facing criticism squarely. In Defence debates involving
Pakistan he would invite the same insulting Pakistani
guests and offer a platform to them to utter their inanities
and to freely throw abuses at Indians and the Indian armed
forces. Although Arnab still came off as a well-informed
and well-prepared moderator, his negative qualities
have been his undoing. In between the deliberations, a
cult promotion was introduced, by such ads as “I have a
question for you, Arnab” and “the nation wants to know”
suggesting that Arnab was a know-all and Times Now
represented the whole country.
The immediate provocation for this article has been 2 News
hour episodes last week. One involved the grand overseas
junket of UP MLAs and an extravagant entertainment by
film personalities at a prohibitive costs at a time attended by
the UP CM and a large entourage at a time when refugees
were shivering in the cold at relief camps in Muzzafarnagar
barely 100 km away. The topic was important. BJP fielded
their spokesperson, Ms. Lalita Kumaramangalam.
The soft-spoken participant completely agreed with
Arnab that the events were most inappropriate and that
the overseas junket costing crores of rupees should have
Just a couple of days later the discussion was on the latest
case of alleged improper behaviour by a Supreme Court
judge towards an intern in 2011. Arnab castigated the Apex
court for deciding not to order an enquiry suo moto unlike
in the case of Justice Ganguly. He insisted that the Court
must review its position. How could the court act differently
in this case, thundered Arnab, with barbs bordering on
ridicule. Although a lawyer participant Mr.Hegde kept
calming and cautioning him against his contemptuous
fulminations, he went on and on.
Only towards the end of the debate when another lady
lawyer was allowed to speak, she made the most sober
remark that Supreme Court was the best judge of every
case and that everyone should accept its ruling gracefully
in this case in the same way as in the previous case. Only
then Arnab relented with soft closing comments. His earlier
remarks treating the belated allegations as truth shocked
the viewers.
It is time for newscasters to learn that it is dangerous for
messengers to become the message. They too have a
special power to inf luence people and must
use it judiciously and with utmost restraint.

Big Data Analytics – The Next Big Thing
Around 7 billion shares are traded every day on the US stock markets, Walmart
collects 2.5 petabytes of data from customer transactions every hour. 10,000 credit
card transactions are made every second. As recently as in 2000, less than 25% of the
information available in the world was digital, the rest was on paper, film, cassettes,
etc. Today, it is estimated that about 1300 exabytes of information exists in the world
and only 2% is non-digital and 90% is unstructured!
Google processes more than 24 petabytes of data every day. Facebook, that did not
even exist 10 years ago, today puts up over 10 million photographs every hour. About
an hour of video is uploaded on YouTube every second, about 3 billion ‘like’ buttons
are pushed every day on Facebook, and there are more than 400 million tweets per
day. About 2.5 exabytes of data is getting created every day and that number is
doubling every month. All this is leading to an explosion of data which has led to the
creation of the world of analytics.
Analytics is one of the best career options today and those who invest in it will be on
the fast track to success. And the best time is NOW.
A career in Analytics requires knowledge and skills from an extremely diverse set
of fields: maths, stats, economics, econometrics, IT, marketing, finance, HR, domain
knowledge and of course a set of software tools. This means that while almost anyone
with an interest in numbers can get in, everyone needs some training.
There are a few good training programs available today on Analytics from the IIMs
and some other business schools as well as from NIIT which has recently launched a
program that has been designed to create complete analytics professionals.
According to the Harvard Business Review, the Data Scientist is the ‘Sexiest Job of the
21st Century’.

extending the elementary courtesy due to her. Instead of
appreciating the helpful stance taken by her, he castigated
her on a similar overseas jaunt of Karnataka MLAs last year
and the reinduction of Yedurappa into BJP, which seemed
totally irrelevant to the topic under debate. The poor lady
was unable to get even a couple of words across. He

she was not one. He treated her so roughly that I felt the
owners of the channel must review his wild performance

Giving up the facade of moderator/facilitator, he donned
the role of an active participant/provocateur. The aim was
to pick on one vulnerable participant and confront him
aggressively. Even if he attempted a feeble defence, he was
silenced by unleashing on him, other hostile participants.
His explanation would be interrupted and curtailed by
asking another participant to intervene against him.

Of Marriage and Assumptions!
So there I was newly married and dreaming
about potential articles (here, one is not to
assume that I was
only dreaming about
articles).
Probable

...well you get the
gist. Every possible
clichéd generalization

I had lines rehearsed to spout out at him; lines to

his socks, eyes my numerous footwear which are
on the verge of tumbling out of the shoe-rack. A
smart woman knows when not to comment!
Make no mistake; my man is not without his quirks.
Case in point, he searches high and low for a so

N
It is important to fine tune an individual’s attitude towards
accepting change, learn new things and to diligently and
responsibly deal with different situations at work. Soft skills
accompany hard skills that help you excel in your work.
For a long time, the importance of soft skills was undervalued.
Most companies assumed that people with good hard
skills would also be good at soft skills. While interviewing,
HR teams often only looked for hard skills. Not anymore!
Employers want people who know how to handle themselves
at work, how to relate to customers and colleagues.
However, when colleagues and friends, both men
and women share ‘spouse stories’ and laugh over
them, I am on the lower rug. My stories are just not
atrocious enough you see! I only get an amused
pat on my head for my stories. The women do not
shake their heads and say “Men!” And the men do
not start beating their chests and defending their
sex, which is the kind of reaction, I would have
loved my stories to elicit.
So you see, not only has my husband downright
check-mated me during gossip times, he has
also ensured that my articles are on the verge of
extinction. What is a girl to do?!
How about you dear readers? Made any silly,
quirky assumptions about marriage and found
yourself to be pleasantly surprised?

Research suggests that hard skills contribute a mere 15% to
one’s success, compared to 85% that comprises soft skills.
•
Accountability: Take ownership of your work. This will
increase the dependability factor.
Why soft skills matter?
1. No more can you land your dream job just by obtaining
a graduate or post graduate degree. When you're seeking
employment, your employer looks at your soft skills with the
same importance as your hard skills.
•
Interpersonal skills: Enjoy better relationships at work
by developing your interpersonal skills.
•
Adaptability: Be open to change. Change is constant
and inevitable. Therefore, it's important to have
a good attitude while accepting the unexpected.
•
Negotiation skills: Improve your negotiation skills.
These skills are important in many jobs, especially
areas such as marketing, sales, customer care and also
valuable in everyday life.
•
Teamwork: Teamwork involves working confidently
within a group and demonstrating cooperation,
coordination and responsibility.
•
Integrity: Having good personal reputation, work ethics
and doing everything it takes to get the job done.
•
Conf lict management: As working within groups can
give rise to conf licts you must have the skill to seek
resolution in a positive way.
•
Positive Attitude: It is very important to cultivate
a positive attitude at work. Be optimistic, encouraging.
A positive environment creates a productive
environment.
2. Companies seek candidates with both types of skills while
considering promotions or allotting new projects. Nowadays, we often come across the term “Soft
Skills”. Soft Skills are so immensely important.
“Soft skills are your communication skills, attitude,
leadership and ability to adapt well”. Hard skills are
on the other hand is your education, experience and level of

However, before you shake me till my teeth rattle
and lecture me on the sanctity of marriage, let me
clarify. All I’m saying is that marriage is a hotspot
for articles. Haven’t column writers in newspapers
and magazines been surviving for years on that
singular topic? Therefore, I am not to be blamed
for such callous assumptions!
However, imagine to my disappointment when my
husband, far from making a fool out of himself in
the kitchen seemed to be taking to it like kids and
video games. You don’t have to teach a kid to play a
video game, you see. They just know! Try giving
them a tip on how to win one of those games; they
will roll their eyes and teach you a thing or two!
So, my husband instead of amusing me with silly
questions like “Babe, do I have to use a cooker
to boil eggs”, makes perfectly concentric dosas
and does the ‘toss & catch’ with his eyes closed.
Okay, I exaggerate, but the point being he makes
perfectly good dosas and gives me no chance
to laugh my head off at amoeba shaped ones.
Hmmmppp!

article.
Let me ask you a question:
When you are hunting for a home loan or want to buy a
product, whom would you prefer to interact with? A sales
executive who is pleasant and takes time to answer your
questions; or the one who treats you like you are just another
customer he has to respond to? I am sure you will prefer to
interact with the first executive. So, what you have actually
done is, you selected the one with better soft skills over the
other executive.
It is the soft skills that matter!!
As a candidate, while your technical skills may get you
noticed or shortlisted for an interview, it is your people
skills that gets you the job! Even after you get your job, your
work ethics, your attitude, your communication skills, your
emotional intelligence and a whole host of other personal
attributes are the soft skills that brings you success.
Do you have the soft Skills Gap?
It's important for you to recognize the important
role soft skills play. So you must work on developing
them within yourself.
These days’ companies are placing a high emphasis on
soft skills. They now realize just how important and well
connected they are to a company's success. Remember, no
one likes a sour lemon without some added sugar :-)
Some of the important points to develop are:
•
Communication Skills: The ability to
communicate effectively is important in your
personal and professional life. Good communication
skills enable you to get ahead in life. The ability to
listen is equally important while communicating.
Take out time and get yourself trained on the above important
soft skills as these skills can help you excel!

Wash the Chicken and cut it into small cubes. Slit the red chilli. Chop the onion, garlic and ginger

•
Put the vessel on fire and add oil. Fry the curry leaves and fennel.
•
Add onion, chopped ginger and garlic and sauté well.

Add chicken and freshly chopped chilli.

Leave it for 3 to 4 minutes and add a pinch of salt, pepper and coriander powder.

Add 1 glass of coconut milk and heat it until it becomes dry.

Serve hot with Chappathi or Pulao.
After we placed order for the soup, we were served our amuse-bouche,
which was a pear soaked in something and though it could not create space
in our not-very-empty stomachs, it was nice. The tortilla soup wasn't the best
soup in the world, but it was nice and I wish there was more crisp tortillas
inside it. Once the soup was done, we were presented with a nice palate
cleanser - a raspberry sorbet. We decided to order one starter and one main
course, so we got a funny

like booondooohoo or
something. The waiter
himself mentioned it as
the 'kebab with many

a signature dish, so we
went with it, along with
a grilled sear-fish and
loved them both. The
kebab was almost like

the lamb was f lavoured

The service was outstanding to say the least. It was attentive without being

of the best services that I have received in a 5 star hotel. After we were done
