BEACHES QUICK GUIDE
Sarasota Bay
QUICK POINT NATURE PRESERVE
On the extreme southern end
of Longboat Key, Quick Point offers a scenic bay beach and excellent bird watching in two lagoon
environments. A short nature trail
takes you through mangroves.
TURTLE BEACH PARK
This multi-faceted, small
beach also offers a canoe/
kayak launch (with great
bird watching and fishing
nearby), a playground
and campground.
Longboat Key
Lido Key
LIDO BEACH
Just a quick stroll in bedazzled
flip flops from chic St. Armands
Circle, Lido is known for its white
sands, jewel green waters and –
surprisingly – a swimming pool.
Siesta Key
SIESTA BEACH
Ahhh, the perfect, powdersoft sand (just one reason
Dr. Beach made this his
#1 pick nationwide in
2011). A great place to
walk, run, people-watch
or play beach volleyball.

the glorious Gulf.
NOKOMIS BEACH
Scenic boardwalks cross over
the dunes at this pretty Gulffront county park. Across the
street, you may fish or launch
a boat in the Intracoastal.
CASPERSEN

Dune formations,
small sand “cliffs”
that offer morning

good snorkeling
highlight this pristine setting. Hunt for
shells and prehistoric

VENICE BEACH
A 1950s-era concession

golden age of postcard perfect Florida travel. The beach
here is still just as beautiful.
BLIND PASS BEACH
With nature trails, excellent
fishing, a canoe launch, playground, and access to both
the Gulf and Lemon Bay, it’s
surprising that this beach is
such a well-kept secret.

EXPERIENCES
Can’t-miss
uniquely
Sarasota
County
experiences
Ask a local why he or she first fell
in love with Sarasota, and you may
find that person waxing poetic. The
discussion might lean toward the
quiet beauty of the Myakka River
at sunrise… the incredible softness
of Siesta’s sands... the sweet
and heady fragrance of orange
blossoms… the unbelievable variety
of wildlife and nature experiences
here… or the vibrant arts, culture
and culinary scene that makes
up both our largest city and our
charming small towns. This is
truly a special place, where both
the simplest of pleasures – and
the most sophisticated – can be
treasured with family and friends.
The pages of this visitor’s guide –
along with our official website,
www.sarasotafl.org – will help
you explore some of the places
and ways it’s so easy to fall in love
with Sarasota. A few ideas to get
you started:
SIESTA BEACH Quite possibly
one of the world’s most satisfying
sandy experiences. This amazing
strand (named the #1 beach in the
nation by Dr. Beach in 2011)
is the place to people-watch, play
volleyball, relax in calm Gulf waters,
or walk for miles. The sand is as
white and soft as talcum powder.
WATERFRONT DINING
From flip-flop-casual
to special-occasionwonderful, a meal by the
water has never tasted
or looked so good. Try
the Old Salty Dog or
Phillippi Creek Village
Restaurant and Oyster
Bar for fish-shack fare,
go resort-casual at the
Crow’s Nest or Turtles, or
plan a special dinner out
at Ophelia’s on the Bay.
MOTE AQUARIUM
Pet a stingray, get
acquainted with an
anemone, meet a manatee:
This aquarium carves out its
own niche among marine
attractions by mixing hightouch creature encounters
with hi-tech attractions,
such as the Immersion
Cinema. There’s something
here for kids of all sizes and
ages, including an awesome
shark tank.
ST. ARMANDS CIRCLE Sure, it’s a little bit
fancy, but it’s all in fun. After a lazy day at
the beach, come dine al fresco and watch
the world stroll by, window shop at classy
boutiques, eat ice cream under the shade
of a palm tree or dance the salsa at night.
T H E O F F I C I A L S A R A S O TA C O U N T Y V I S I T O R S G U I D E
MYAKKA CANOPY WALKWAY
When you want to see the world in a
whole new way, there’s no reason it
can’t be from the top. Nature lovers
should head straight to Myakka River
State Park’s canopy walkway, one of
only about a dozen in the world
open to the public – the view
from the 74-foot observation
tower is spectacular.
WATER FUN However
you do it, make a plan
to see Sarasota waterside. Hop on a Jet Ski
or Waverunner to zip
through the waves, rent
a pontoon boat for a
floating good time, glide
through the bay on a
sunset sailing
cruise,
or go islandtropical
aboard the
LeBarge
cruise.
SARASOTA’S BAYFRONT Peruse
charter and sightseeing boat options;
dine waterfront at landmark Marina Jack
or tiki-casual O’Leary’s; ramble around
Island Park with your partner or your
pooch; admire public art; play in the
kiddie fountain… it’s all open-air
sunshiny goodness.
WARM MINERAL SPRINGS Soak away
your cares at the world’s largest warm
mineral springs in North Port. Boasting
87-degree water, this natural spring
pumps out nine million gallons of mineralrich water each day, meaning that it’s
completely refreshed for swimmers
every two hours. A spa and
health-focused café on-site
add to the mix.
PINECRAFT AMISH COMMUNITY Sarasota has its own sunny version
of Lancaster, Pa. Hankering for some shoofly (or strawberry or
rhubarb) pie? Head to the Pinecraft neighborhood, where you’ll find
Amish restaurants, small, tidy homes and members of the Amish and
Mennonite community in traditional clothing riding large-wheeled
tricycles. The Saturday farmers market offers produce and crafts.
TOPS FOR KIDS
GLORIOUS GARDENS The kids will love hand-feeding flamingos, posing
with tropical birds, and the entertaining bird and animal shows at Sarasota
Jungle Gardens. Imaginative kids love the whimsical Sarasota Children’s
Garden with its secret garden, maze and tree fort. And beautiful
Selby Gardens offers a butterfly garden, banyan grove and koi
pond, plus plenty of room for little ones to stretch their legs.
G.WIZ Play “Mindball” with a friend and see
who can control mind over matter; get a
close-up look at Madagascar hissing
cockroaches and native snakes;
make a bolt of lightning appear
in the Plasma Ball. Learning and
entertainment all rolled into one
experience… it’s a parent’s dream.
WEDDINGS BY THE SEA A gentle
breeze, the murmur of the surf…
and a backdrop almost as beautiful
as the bride. Say “I do” as the
sun sets in the Gulf or host your
ceremony at one of our lovely
museums or gardens for a day that’s
as memorable as anything you’ve
dreamed of.
LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS (OH
MY!) Rescued exotic animals – including rare
white tigers – are the attraction at Big Cat Habitat
and Gulf Coast Sanctuary. Kids and parents can tour
the facility (which is typically open on weekends) and
watch brief demonstrations with the animals.

on attractions and businesses mentioned in this story.

NATURE
Sarasotas Splendor
Tiny, violet-hued coquinas ride in on a wave to bury themselves in Siesta’s silky sands …
a doe and her fawn rest in the shade of a pine-and-palmetto hammock at
Myakka River State Park … bottlenose dolphins fish in the surf near the
Venice Inlet … a flock of ibis soars in a cloudless sky …
the Sarasota area is full of Mother Nature’s miracles.
Come experience them for yourself.
A
s we walked the curve of the
riverbank at Jelks Preserve in
Venice, a friend said something
I’ve not forgotten.
“Stop,” he said. “Be still. If you
look and listen, there’s a whole
world around us.”
In a few moments, the natural
world that had been on the edge
of my consciousness came alive:
A tree frog’s musical call. The
iridescent glimmer of a dragonfly’s wings in dappled sunlight.
The deeply earthy scent of the
riverbank. A flutter of scrub jay
wings in palmetto fronds. Black ants
marching past, an army on a quest
to a destination I knew not of.
I’ve paddled, hiked and explored
nature all over the Sarasota area,
in every season. I know how
peaceful, even soul-soothing, a
day in her outdoors can be. Yet
even I had forgotten something
important: Stop. Be still. Look
and listen.
In today’s busy world, we sometimes
forget to slow down and celebrate
the wonder of nature that once
came to us so easily as children.
With her beautiful landscapes and
amazing outdoor experiences, the
Sarasota area is the perfect place
to remember.

‘GATOR WATCH
“Watch where you
put your paddle!”
my canoeing companion said. On that
day, the Myakka Lake
tributary seemed like
a Tarzan movie cometo-life, complete with
croc look-alikes. Any
day of the year, from
a canoe or kayak,
or from the park’s
observation areas,
you will see ‘gators in
Myakka River State
Park. Also try: Oscar
Scherer State Park in
Osprey; the Myakka
River near Snook
Haven in Venice.
PADDLER’S
PARADISE
Bring your own
kayak or canoe, or
rent one from a local
outfitter, but don’t
miss the chance to
explore Lido Key’s
mangrove tunnels.
Even in daylight, this
canopy of “walking
trees” (accessed from
the launch at South
Lido Nature Park)
feels mysterious, but
friends tell me that a
full moon paddle here
can be “awesomely
spooky.” As you
paddle, you may see
tiny mangrove crabs,
yellow-crowned night
herons, dolphins
and even manatees.
Other good spots:
Myakka River State
Park; Oscar Scherer
State Park; and Snook
Haven (boat concessions are available in
all locations).

GREAT HIKES
Head to the Crowley
Museum and Nature
Center where nature
trails traverse pine
flatwoods, oak hammocks, swamp and
marsh – and a newly
renovated, half-mile
boardwalk leads to
an observation tower.
Or try Myakka River
State Park’s Mossy
Hammock Trail which
offers shade on much
of its 2.2-mile path;
the park’s Nature
Trail, near the famed
Canopy Walkway, is
quiet and scenic. For
a walk near water, try
the Jelks Preserve
along the Myakka River in Venice or Oscar
Scherer State Park’s
South Creek trail.

FLIPPER AND
FRIENDS
Keep your eyes
peeled for wildlife!
One memorable
Fourth of July, I saw
a dolphin and her
calf play in Sarasota
Bay while fireworks
colored the sky. At
an Osprey marina, I
witnessed the birth of
a manatee calf. You
may spot dolphins
and manatees right
from our beaches
(and sea turtle nests
in summer, too) – or
head to the Venice
and Nokomis jetties,
where dolphins are
seen every day.

FAVE FISHIN’ HOLES
If pescephile were
a word, my father
would be it. No one
loves to catch (or
eat) finned creatures
more than he, and
the Sarasota area is
deservedly one of his
favorite places to wet
a line. Dad’s mostloved saltwater fishin’
holes: the Intracoastal
Waterway across
from Nokomis Beach
(at 4 a.m., of course);
underneath the Blackburn Point Bridge in
Osprey; beneath the
Ringling Bridge in
Sarasota; and South
Lido Park for wade
fishing. In freshwater,
the branches of the
Myakka River, leading
out to Charlotte Harbor, fit the bill. Dad’s
big splash each year?
An offshore charter

NATURE TOURS
If you’ve ever wondered what lies
beneath the water’s
surface, Sarasota Bay
Explorers at Mote
Aquarium can help
with answers. Biologist-narrated Sea Life
Encounter and Nature
Safari cruises explore
our marine environments, giving kids of
all ages an up-close
look at puffer fish,
stone crabs, sea horses, sand dollars and
more. Oscar Scherer
State Park, Myakka
River State Park and
Crowley Museum
and Nature Center
also offer interpretive
programs year ‘round
(check out Crowley’s
new Children’s Discovery Path with five
interactive stations,
including a zipline).

BIRD’S-EYE
Every traveling
avian enthusiast
should have a birding buddy; consider
Owen Comora yours.
This long-time birder
offers up his favorite local spots: the
Celery Fields for
roseate spoonbills and
black-bellied whistling
ducks; Pinecraft Park
year ‘round for wrens
and anhingas (seasonally for warblers and
other migrating birds);
Oscar Scherer State
Park for endangered
scrub jays; North Lido
Beach and Siesta
Beach for shorebirds.
Or take a birding boat
tour and get close-up
photos at local rookery islands. Check out
www.sarasotaaudubon.
org for more.
COOL CAMPSITES
Why not set up camp
just a hop, skip and a
jump from the beach?
Turtle Beach Campground’s sites (part
of Sarasota County’s
Turtle Beach Park)
can accommodate
RVs up to about 32
feet or tents. Canoes
and kayaks are OK,
but no motorboats or
pets, please. Campers cross over a small
dune system to the
Gulf, and fishing, a
canoe launch, picnic shelters, grills, a
playground, volleyball, and horseshoe
pits are nearby. Other
options: Myakka River
State Park’s cabins;
Oscar Scherer State
Park’s creekside sites;
Sun-n-Fun full-service
camping resort.

DINING
Food is both art and fun
in the Sarasota area
George Bernard Shaw once said that there is no love more sincere than
the love of food. There’s much to adore in the Sarasota area, where
restaurants ranging from ultra-sophisticated to toes–in–the–sand–casual
grace the culinary scene.
AWARD-WINNERS. When everything has to be just right,
Michael’s on East in Sarasota’s Midtown Plaza and Vernona
at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota, fit the bill. Michael’s received
its 20th consecutive AAA Four Diamond Award in 2010, one
of only two restaurants in Florida to receive that honor. Find
locally grown cuisine at the Mobil Four Star Vernona, which
was recently named “Best Overall Restaurant in Florida” by
Florida International magazine. The Bijou Café, a Europeaninfluenced café in downtown Sarasota, has earned accolades
from Bon Appetit and Gourmet magazines. And Longboat
Key’s Euphemia Haye was named one of “America’s Top
200 Most Romantic Restaurants.” It doesn’t get any fresher
than our award-winning farmers markets. In a 2011 poll of
America’s favorite markets, the North Port Farmers Market
came in first in the Boutique category, and the Venice
Farmers Market was second among Small Markets.
T H E O F F I C I A L S A R A S O TA C O U N T Y V I S I T O R S G U I D E
OLD–TIME FLORIDA. Snook
Haven, Venice. Folks come to
this rustic little oak-hammock
hideaway on the scenic Myakka
River for fried catfish, ‘gator bites
and other unpretentious fare,
along with live music daily. After
your meal, rent a canoe or kayak
or take a boat tour to see the river.
Dine here
MY OH MY, SAVE ROOM
FOR PIE. Troyer’s Dutch
Heritage and Yoder’s,
Sarasota. One would be
hard-pressed to say which of
these Sarasota-area Amish
institutions offers a better
sticks-to-your-ribs
meal. One thing is sure:
The pies are heaven-sent.
FARM FRESH. Fresh produce
and friendly faces are found at
farmers markets in downtown
Sarasota (one of Florida’s
oldest) and North Port (both
Saturday); at The Dome Flea
Market in Venice (Friday
through Sunday); and at
Siesta Key Village (Sunday).
Jessica’s Organic Farm is
another great option for
veggie lovers.
OVER-THE-TOP ENDINGS.
The Haye Loft at Euphemia
Haye, Longboat Key. Bananas
Foster, Cherries Jubilee,
Crêpes Suzette … could an
evening end more deliciously
than this? Sweets-lovers flock
here for the decadent pies,
cakes and pastries, too.
HEALTH NUT. Café Evergreen
at Warm Mineral Springs
focuses on good-for-youfoods such as salads, wraps
and whole-grain dishes –
and even offers an organic
microbrew. In Sarasota, also
worthy of note is the cheerful
Simon’s Coffee House, with
fresh ingredients and delicious
breads, and newcomer Veg
with both vegetarian and
seafood dishes.
GOING GLUTEN-FREE.
If gluten is a concern, try
Cosimo’s Brick Oven in
Sarasota, or Vertoris Pizza
House in Bradenton. The
Island Gluten Free Bakery,
near Sarasota’s Stickney Point
Bridge, is a great option too.
LATE NIGHT. Munchies 4:20 Café.
This culinary ode to excess was
featured on Man v. Food (host
Adam Richman called the wings
a “fiery inferno”). If you dare, try
the “Fat Sandy” sandwich (two
cheeseburgers, mac ‘n’ cheese,
chicken fingers, onion rings and
other stuff sure to require medical
intervention). Polish it off with a
fried Twinkie. Open 4:20 p.m.
to 4:20 a.m.
BUNGALOW BEAUTIES. Charming
settings add to delightful dining:
In Sarasota, try The Breakfast
House for fantastic food in a Key
West setting or Owen’s Fish Camp
for rustic dining in historic Burns
Court. Luna, in charming downtown
Venice, has great pizza and
enormous pasta dishes. Or enjoy
a relaxing meal under the shade
of the big oak at Café de la Bay
in Englewood.
’50s DRIVE-IN. The Hob
Nob, Sarasota. This icon
on the north side of town
has been serving up the
classics – burgers, hot
dogs, fries, onion rings,
shakes and floats – since
1957. Outdoor seating at
breakfast and lunch.
BEACH BAR. The Daiquiri Deck and S.K.O.B.,
Siesta Village. Suit required (bathing suit, that is).
Technicalities aside (they aren’t actually on the sand),
these two little open-air joints are quintessential beach
bar: totally laid-back, lots of seafood, plenty of peoplewatching. S.K.O.B. has live tunes; Daiquiri Deck has
outrageous drink choices.

ARCHITECTURE
Structurally speaking, our area is
best known for the
minimalistic, modern
buildings known as
the Sarasota School
of Architecture,
designed from 1940
to 1970. Now, fans of
building design can
explore this and two
other architectural
eras on a self-guided tour. Visitors can
also stroll charming
1920s-era Venezia Park in Venice
where most homes
are in the Mediterranean Revival style.
For information and
brochures, stop in at
the Visitors Center
at 701 N. Tamiami Trl.
in Sarasota.
La Musica brings outstanding international chamber musicians to Sarasota each April.
SARASOTA OPERA
Critics say the acoustics are superb at the
opera’s 1926 art deco theater in downtown
Sarasota, which recently completed a $20
million renovation. Besides the comfort of its
ornate surroundings, Sarasota Opera prides
itself on offering both familiar and lesserknown works to welcome both novices and
opera aficionados.

FESTIVALS
From celebrations
of culture such as
Sarasota’s Greek
Glendi and Venice’s
Italian Feast & Carnival (both in February) to celebritywatching at the
Sarasota Film Festival (April), to music
festivals ranging
from jazz (February/
March) to chamber
music (April) to the
blues (November),
this area finds a
way to host a good
party. Join us!
ART WALKS
Head to downtown Sarasota for two chances
to mingle, browse, dine and shop: Palm Avenue’s First Friday celebration offers all this
plus live performances from 6 – 9 p.m.; Towles
Court opens up its galleries and working artists’ studios from 6 – 10 p.m. on the third Friday
of every month. Nearby, in Bradenton, check
out Village of the Arts’ ArtWalk, held the first
Friday of each month.
Please see our Attractions section, which begins on
page 20, for art & culture listings related to this story.
MUSIC
Music lovers find
much that delights,
including performances from classical
to pops by the Venice
Symphony and the
Sarasota Orchestra. The 130-voice
Key Chorale offers
concerts October
through April. The
Artist Series of
Sarasota hosts international musicians
from October through
May. And for three
weeks each June, the
world’s best young
musicians converge
here for the Sarasota
Music Festival with its
classes, lectures and
concerts (many open
to the public).
SARASOTA BALLET
Everything is beautiful at the Gulf Coast’s
professional ballet company. The company is thriving under director Iain Webb,
performing classics and debuting modern
works. 2011-2012 season highlights: George
Balanchine's "Diamonds" and "My Way,"
featuring Twyla Tharp's Nine Sinatra Songs.

SPORTS
THE SPORTING LIFE
has never been so much fun
Whether you want to cheer during a chukker, ride
a wave, show up for dawn patrol at a local golf
course or just enjoy America’s favorite pastime,
the Sarasota area is sporting good fun.
T H E O F F I C I A L S A R A S O TA C O U N T Y V I S I T O R S G U I D E
HEY, BATTER BATTER!
Baltimore Orioles fans
have some rejoicing to
do: Now they can watch
their favorite team’s
spring training games
in one of the most
beautiful cities in the
South (and in a brandnew stadium)! It’s a great
and inexpensive way to
entertain the family.
VIEWS FROM ON HIGH
Get a bird’s-eye view
of the area’s sugar-white
sands and sparkling seas
(perhaps even a pod of
dolphins) while soaring
on a parasailing adventure.
Stay dry while launching
from and landing on the
stern of the boat, or opt
for a refreshing dip in
the Gulf of Mexico.
CALM SURF Well, no,
it’s not Hawaii 5-0.
In fact, our calm Gulf
waters mean that this
is a super place to skim
board (local beach
shops offer boards if
you didn’t bring your
own). Watch the surf
line, take a few running
steps with your board,
throw it down, and ride!
GREAT GOLF No matter
whether you spend most
of your game in a bunker,
or are ready to play
with the pros, Sarasota
offers some exceptional
courses at terrific values.
Try Bobby Jones (a 1927
Donald Ross design),
a standout municipal
course among scores of
great golfing options.
POLO! The sport
typically has a certain
“entertainment for the
elite” aura, but not here
in Sarasota. Tickets are
just $10 for the Sunday
matches (late December
through mid-April) in
Lakewood Ranch. Tailgating
is encouraged and kids and
dogs (the latter on leash)
are welcome.
ROW YOUR BOAT or
watch someone else row
hers. Even if you’ve never
sat in a rowing shell, it’s
fun to watch a regatta at
Nathan Benderson Park
off University Parkway,
which is slated to become
a world-class rowing
facility. A boathouse,
canoe rentals and biking/
hiking paths are planned.
BEST PLACES TO CYCLE,
WALK OR RUN Ride,
rollerblade or stroll the
Legacy Trail, a rails-to-trails
project connecting Venice
and Sarasota. Exclusive
Casey and Manasota keys
are popular for water
vistas and tony mansions.
In Sarasota, see city views
and sailboats from the
stunning Ringling Bridge.
The whole family can rent
bikes and explore Myakka
River State Park.
TENNIS, ANYONE?
All-inclusive tennis
resorts, public courts
in city parks and
everything in between
– tennis is a year-round
sport here. Get intensive
instruction from a pro,
or just hit a few easy
balls before a dip in the
pool. Every April, watch
the pros compete in the
Sarasota Open, held
at the Longboat Key
Club & Resort.
